If you watch Teller's hands, you can see him manipulating the string with his fingers. As for when the string was attached, watch as he sets the ball down on the bench for the first time. All it takes is a little bit of tape and boom.
This is my absolute favourite trick of theirs. I love how hard it is to tell when and where teller is directing the string and how. Makes the ball seem truly alive
I don't know if the thread was directed by Teller or by Pen ... and i don't care because it was an exceptionally executed routine. Teller is an artist in simple and amazing mind-blowing tricks, even if they have to reveal the whole or part of their trick !!!
Timothy Avendt it's all Teller. The trick was developed 100 years ago by David Abbott. Teller said in an interview he worked on the trick for 6 years or something before he showed Penn. Penn originally hated the trick so they worked on it for another couple years. Penn still thinks it's too artsy which is why he clips the string and kicks the ball.
I heard on I THINK this American Life that Teller came up with this after reading a manuscript for magic by a magician that had been missing since the 40’s. Anyway, Penn hated the trick UNTIL he was able to tell it was done with string and cut the string at the end.
In each and every tv show they always add taped laughter. Try and watch something like Seinfeld without any sound but with text caption so you know what they say. It is not funny. The guy who plants it precisely timed and just the perfect version of the laughter should get an Emmy, not the actors.
@@Squiddy12 It's a magical stage illusion done with monofilament, which for some people including myself, find more inspiring and beautiful than watching tired old card tricks. You ignorant dipshit.
Had to go back a second time after realizing exactly who was controlling the thread.... The amount of time for practice needed to make the ball moving back and forth and seemingly jump must have been astronomical. I can see now how he was doing it, but to make it look that good he had to have been using most of his body to control that one string, that no one can even see... insane.
the original trick was made by someone else and was only the ball rolling and had the string tied to the magicians ear but teller made it his own by being the only magician to make it bounce like that and he still only uses 1 string. Others have tried to recreate tellers bouncing ball, poorly might i add, and they all needed multiple strings
It is really done with just one thread at least till 1:40. I can see how he manipulates it with his right hand, fingers and the shoulder and head(thread is connected behind right ear I would say). Its still very skilled and genius and so subtle
The greatest part about this trick is just how much Penn hates it. He’s never liked it even after Teller spent so much time perfecting it. The part at the end where he cuts the string was an expression of his hate for it.
Seriously, why does every P&T comment section have a solution to the trick involving magnets? We're literally told here how it's done. People give magnets way too much credit for what they can do.
People give electro-magnets with lot of precise control, tests and preparations way too little credit. Or better yet, people give way to little credit to how much illusionist can do with pre-prepared stage. This could have been done with electromagnets. Either laid tracks under stage or more easily done with circle of magnets centering ball and with increase of power pushing it upwards. You move that magnet circle below and ball on stage moves identicaly. You push power up, it can float in air. You push power up and immidietaly turn it off and it seems as if ball bounced. But I agree that this could also have been done with just string. It would be much more difficult and thus impressive but as rule of thumb, do not believe what illusionists is telling you. It may be truth, it may be distraction.
So the ball attached to the hoop at that angle... 100% electromagnets, right? You realize how fucking dumb an idea using magnets it? They do not have a linear power output, so you'd not see parabolic motion at all. Also, you realize how incredibly difficult it would be to coordinate that act? Either they have one of the most insanely powerful algorithms for motion tracking, or they are planning the act down to even the slightest motion and pause. Anyone thinking there are electromagnets needs to go an find someone with an electromagnet and see if you can hover a ball at all.
Quality: No matter which way they did it, that act definitely required immense planning to even the slightiest motion and pause. That has nothing to do with electromagnets. But other than that yes. Realize one thing: Every single movement and act of Teller could have been just choreography to already predetermined movement of that ball. If you have under stage several electromagnets asembled into large circle (lets say with half meter radius) on platform that is following programed path with preprogramed power outputs at correct times all you need to do is then train to do choreography according to that ball movement. And that is as feasible as dancing. As for ball attached to the hoop, you do realize that it was not attached right? That he was just balancing that ball there with external force be it string or el.magnets pushing it that way.. ANd since you seem to be quite skeptical, check this: ua-cam.com/video/xcfU8VN7vLo/v-deo.html Floating balls thanks to electromagnet. Put it on platform to be able to move it. Put into it program regulating power that goes through it over time. And you too can start training choreography for whichever trick you want to do with it
I was thinking it wasn't thread at all. I believe they used 2 magnets. One on pens finger (pinky) and the other within the hoop. when he put the balloon/ ball behind his back, he put the magnet in his back pocket. At the very end, nothing was cut, he just removed the magnet.
Watch at 3:00, when the ball jumps through the hoop it starts to roll backwards for a second because the thread hit the hoop, he then puts the hoop back over the ball before he picks it up because it has the thread around it, at the end the thread goes through the hoop then up to the rafters
Great control!!! Is it really done with thread? However it is done it would not be a easy to have that much control. He walked around with it sitting on the edge of the hoop and then it just fell off.
Just fucking WOW. I mean a magician that comes out, tells you how he's going to trick you and dupes you anyway with a flawless illusion. That is how it's done my friends.
Ar 2:00 when the ball moves towards him you can actually see the string and you also see his right hand move controlling the string even if the camera angle are selected to hide it, also hand movement when he release the ball from the ring. The backdrop need to be "busy" to not reveal the string too easy. So he is actually controlling the ball with only a string and he does it to perfection.
Ok so when teller places the ball he placed it on magicians wax with string and the left had was controlling it by pulling in the string at the beginning. Then it was connected to the bench. That’s why he could walk around.
It's his left hand you need to look at, he controls the movement of the ball with the piece of string acting as a pulley, but uses the ball and his other hand as the main distraction.
i was looking at his left hand all the time... its doing almost nothing and cant account for the big movements the ball does. i think the ball is controlled by Penn back stage and Teller is just doing a little dance with the ball.
+Raja Sharidan But it cannot be done with a thread of conversation as Teller does not talk. Ironic that he is called Teller but never tells us anything. I guess Penn just writes it all down.
He has a string hooked to a mechanism inside of his left sleeve that allows him to extend or shorten the string. He may have more than one string that he can attach and reattach at will. I am not sure if he unattaches/reattaches them from the ball or from his arm.
+weirdokiller123126 I don't think so, he can shorten and extend the string by pinching and by tangling the string around his body (hence all the piruets he makes to untangle and tangle it back)
Thorinbur I think he wraps is around himself like you describe too, if he is altering the length of the string just like that it is all the more impressive. But I still think he had a mechanism for changing the length.
They do individual tricks all the time in their Vegas show. Penn does an entire fire-eating bit one episode of FU. If they only did their big tag team tricks they would run out after a couple seasons.
You can see it parts that Teller has his pinky on the right hand bent. He tries to cover it. May have something to do with the trick, string up the arm maybe
Please note that Penn tells how the trick is done at the beginning and we STILL can't tell how the hell it's done. Now THAT'S TALENT!
If you watch Teller's hands, you can see him manipulating the string with his fingers. As for when the string was attached, watch as he sets the ball down on the bench for the first time. All it takes is a little bit of tape and boom.

They are very talented, I like their duo!
I read an interview with Teller where he said it took him 18 months to figure out how to do this.
Came here after listening to Teller explaining this on This American Life’s “Magic Trick” episode. It’s a brilliant!l trick!
I still find it hilarious that Penn hates this act so much! Such a great episode of TAL.
God damn, Teller is a legend.
I'd love to see him redo this exact trick with a thick string.
This is my absolute favourite trick of theirs. I love how hard it is to tell when and where teller is directing the string and how. Makes the ball seem truly alive

I am only here because of This American Life

It's all done by Teller.
i think teller is the only 'real' magician
it was directed by none. it was simply suspended directly above Teller and manipulated completely by him.
Kryztofer Huffstutler it can't be completely him. he barely moved while the ball moved 5 feet.
I love how Penn casually destroys the illusion. :D
It feels aggressive to me.
It was executed perfectly. Nothing but pure skill.
I want to take Penn and Teller in a time machine to a couple thousand years ago and just watch the chaos.
Teller is probably from a different dimension and has come to earth to show us his telepathic ways to save humanity.
I heard on I THINK this American Life that Teller came up with this after reading a manuscript for magic by a magician that had been missing since the 40’s. Anyway, Penn hated the trick UNTIL he was able to tell it was done with string and cut the string at the end.
Just listened to the episode and actually to this day Penn hates the trick haha

Love watching teller perform by himself... what a master
The lighting on the ball makes it look permanently angry...

FAKE! You can totally see the strings holding Teller up!
Mikey Mike Ofcourse it's fake. What do you expect? A living ball?
IM Cool, Mikey here is being sarcastic.
IM Cool reread that comment.
"the strings holding *Teller* up."
Mikey Mike what do you expect from magic? But can you do it?

While that is one way to perform this trick, they did in fact use string taped to the ball.

He told us how the trick is done and they still fooled us, only Pen and Teller can do that :P
Just done with a piece of thread, YEA RIGHT, magicians lie all the time, they said it, not me.
I finally figured out why Penn doesn't like this trick. It's...rather a bit self indulgent. But it's also AWESOME and hilarious, so...

did any else see penn grab tellers arm twice before cutting thread?
TwoGunToast yeah why did he do that?
I imagine the thread is wrapped around the ball and attached to each hand
I can’t believe how that trick was done.
Well the ball is filled with something other that air that's for sure.
JoRoWi83 nope.
the thread us held in his left and controlled through his right
Magnets in the stage floor, probably Penn
I don't understand how it can be taut at close distances and free at 10 yards away
Hard to believe Penn doesn't like this trick
Pay attention to his left hand at the middle of the performance
Don't care if it's just a thread, I know what he used.. hell they told us what he used... but i still don't know how he did it that was amazing!

Watch his left hand at the 1:00 minute mark. He is clearly seen reaching for the string.
