Ninh explains the Rules of Rugby Sevens. A variation of the Rules of Rugby Union.
This is becoming a popular sport in it's own right and quickly attracting a worldwide audience.
Please be sure to share this video and subscribe :)
Ninh Ly i'd like to see a rules of shinty explained. There really isn't a place to learn the rules easily. Have a nice day! :)
Good luck with that ... it's not played professionally and there's no usable footage out there to make a video about it. Might want to just Google it.
Can players playing for a nation in rugby union also play for the rugby sevens team of that nation?
In short: its rugby with 7 ppl per team playing for 7 minute halves (unless its the final) and you drop kick for a conversion
Look forward to the Rugby 9s rules.
Rugby Sevens was one of my favorite parts of the Olympics last year!
Yeah, it was one of the better sports in the Olympics for sure!
Yea not only was it the most entertaining sport there but what a great story with Fiji winning Gold for the country's first medal. It meant so much to the players and the country as a whole.
@@davidfox9947 David, I, too, enjoyed seeing Fiji win the gold - I'm now anticipating the next Olympic Summer Games in Tokyo, just to see Fiji defend their gold medal.
@@MegaJustGeorge Fiji wins
The level of fitness u need to play rugby sevens is actually unreal, great video Ninh, keep them coming!
Thanks man, yes - it's an incredible game that requires a huge level of stamina due to the wide open field. Thanks for your comment!
Can confirm, I've played and refereed in a few local sevens tournaments and it's amazing how much just one game can take out of you, especially when it's a high-scoring game!
@@TheOriginalStix I was just rewatching the Olympic 7s gold medal match (women’s) from 2016 between Australia and NZ (it’s official, that medal match has to have the record for most out lesbians competing in one match, I think the number is at 13 for both teams combined, you could make a full team based off that stat alone, lol). I don’t know if I care, as long as the Americans stop choking under pressure and actually give support and help to the American rugby team, maybe we could actually win a gold medal (I think the women did it twice in the 2000s but the men never have to My knowledge). I prefer the women’s game. The men are a lot quicker and faster paced but that’s about it. The women are bleeding and cut up. I saw that Olympic replay on TV, it was on the Olympic channel as a Olympic replay day, and I have to say the women’s was a lot more fun to watch than the guys even though I didn’t know half the rules. It’s quite funny that there was a part in the game at the end, right before the Ozzie’s scored their game-clinching try, and the Ozz tackled her and got the ball on a turnover, or whatever it’s called when they try to flick it to a teammate and the other team scoops it up, well it was just three passes before that score that the NZ tackled her real-life Ozz girlfriend and landed on top of her. You can see the one lady, the Ozz, got tackled, and then kinda push the NZ player off her in a playful kinda way.
@@TheOriginalStix Also, about those two being together, how tough is that being against your significant other and watch them cry because they lost the gold medal match to your team.
@@TheOriginalStix I’m actually just graduated from school, a little school in a 20,000 person town, but I watch and see the college rugby women’s team to at it in practices and man they look like they’re having a ton of fun, but I hope they can go further this year in the confernade than last year as 2020 was supposed to be their first year as a team and not a club, but it was cancelled so they couldn’t practice. It’s nice to see them out there practicing.
I was introduced to Rugby 🏉 in 2019. I spent 7 weeks in New Zealand working as a physio and fell in love with this sport esp. Rugby 7s. Cheers for making these videos. Very informative.
7s is a sideshow 15s is the real rugby
Great vid, Ninh! I played rugby union for a year and a half when I attended university in the States...we strictly played union during the season, but would usually have several players go to the annual Rugby 7s tournament in Las Vegas (it's held every February).
In my opinion, 7s is the perfect gateway sport for athletes who are interested in playing union. It still requires plenty of athleticism and discipline, but is simple enough to provide a way to become a fundamentally sound rugby player in union format.
Agreed! I think Sevens will bring a new audience and new players to the sport of Rugby in general, just like T20 did for Cricket. Good Sevens players probably have a decent Union future ahead of them. Cheers :)
Well done! Headed to my first Rugby Sevens tournament tomorrow and now feel I can follow the action with some level of understanding. Thanks much
Thanks for creating this video! Helpful to review, in advance of the 7s Olympic viewing coming up this week!
I have been shooting 7s this year with a local club and following college teams...the action in 7s is intense and exciting to watch! Thanks for putting these episodes out !
Cool, thanks man.

The tournament during the 2016 Rio Olympics was really good and entertaining. It had definately has caught my attention!
I think Rugby Sevens will catch on, and drum up more interest for Rugby Union in general. Rugby League have their own version (9's) but it's nowhere near as popular.
I actually look more foward to 7's than conventional rugby/league. it's more entertaining and NZ doesn't win all the time lol
Yeah I must admit, the HSBC World 7's is quite entertaining and matches are over in 15 minutes and you get to see several teams at once. What's there not to like?! Thanks for stopping by! :)
I went to the Adelaide Sevens every year, and had the time of my life for those very reasons. Getting to see an entire international tournament happen over a weekend is so cool, especially when the action on the field is always exciting.
Definitely ... I'm going to have to see a London 7's tournament or make an excuse to go to some exotic location just to watch this thing. Always see it on the TV, but never seen one in real life!
Ninh Ly I
USA
USA
I’m here so I can pretend to understand what’s going on when I watch the USA women team at the olympics tonight. (Ilona Maher I love you)
same 😭
@@ivettenabor6018 Sucks That we haven’t gotten over the semifinal slump since 2008 when we medaled. 2012 was very much the same thing and we thought bright things were ahead for us until one of the captains got hurt and it threw off the rest of the team and lineup. We normally are a favorite in the Worlds and Olympics, and for good reason, but just because we’re top 5 in the world doesn’t mean crap when we can’t even win an Olympic quarterfinals in 9 years. Going to be 10 years coming up this year.
I love your videos and choosing guiles theme as background music was perfect
This is a very good video primer on the sport of Sevens - and I shall remember these rules for quite some time.
Believe it or not, I've had an idea for a Sevens board game, and I shall research a bit more and even try to research some of the teams in Sevens - especially those clubs in the Kings of the Sevens series.
I thank you for this video, and I wish you only the best.
Thanks man, I appreciate your comments!
For the spectator one of the biggest advantages that 7's has over Union is that there's more competition between national sides. In the RWC it's almost always going to be NZ, South Africa (ehh...maybe), Australia, Argentina, and England to be favourites to win whereas in 7's NZ has stellar competition against countries like Fiji, Wales, Georgia and Kenya!
Agreed! It's less of a foregone conclusion in Sevens and any team can win on any given day. I watched Canada beat the Aussies and the USA beat New Zealand, so anything's possible in this game! Good points!
New Zealand would dominate 7s if the NZRU let its 15s players play.
NZRU mentality: All Blacks >>>>> Super Rugby >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> 7s.
The NZRU allows it. Liam messam (former sevens players) and SBW actually played in the team that represented NZ in the olympics. New Zealand lost by the way
Oi. Its going to be new zealand, new zealand, new zealand, or maayyybe new zealand
7s is worse pretty much the same sides win all the time 15s has more competition
Great job as always, Ninh! I've seen sevens on NBCSN from time to time.
Thanks Ron! It's a great sport to watch, and you can watch several teams in an afternoon so it's fast paced and you'll never get bored of it. I think it's the way forward for Rugby Union, just like T20 was to Cricket.
Just got back from rugby 7s in Vancouver it was awesome!!!
Yeah, it's pretty awesome. Glad you enjoyed it.
Never clicked on a video so fast, I love sevens (Also, points for Guile's Theme)!
Thanks Marc ... and Guile's new SFV theme is awesome!
Thank you!!!! Currently watching the rugby sevens and needed to know what the heck was going on!
Thanks man, glad this video helped!

I really badly want to play 7’s and the rules were very helpful. Thanks
Thank you for making this video. I had no idea if there were penalty goals in 7s, because I can honestly say I've never seen any.
It''s rare for sure, but you can score from them. thanks for the comments!
It should probably be taken completely out. It just kills the 7'sgame if a team wins by penalty goal.
As a American who's favorite sports are American Football and Hockey (ice) I got into Rugby a couple of years ago because of 7's now it's probably my next favorite sport League or Union.
Cool!
Thank you for makeing this video now I know how to play for these few games comeing up 😊👌
Awesome, thanks! Glad you found this video on Rugby Sevens useful!
I look forward to the Ninh explains Rugby League 9’s and Ninh explains Rugby League 7’s videos.
Interesting sport indeed. I definitely plan to watch a game or two!
Totally! Given that games last no longer than 15 minutes, it'd only take you half an hour to watch two!
Auckland 9s. Great video Ninh!
Maybe if there's more demand. And thanks! :)
yasssssss!!! I know the 7s rules already but this vid is soooo useful!!
Thanks Kalle, glad you find this useful.
How true, Kalle - this video by Ninh has inspired me to want to develop and offer for sale to the public a Sevens board game; admittedly, I may not be in the same league as some other game publishers, but at least I can give it a try.
Dude, is the background song a variation of "Guile's Theme" from Street Fighter II?
Hi Jacob. It IS Guile's theme from Street Fighter V!!! Awesome rendition of it too. Well spotted!
Awesome! Glad to see you making vids again, Ninh!
Yes, I'm glad to be back. Thanks again! :)
Ninh Ly nice vid
Thanks Josh :)
Cool video once again Ninh
Thanks Alex, still trying to crank them out.
Big list at the end was very handy - my 15s game tomorrow is likely to turn into sevens, and as a 40-year-old forward who's never played Sevens, this worries me
Wow!! I was hoping that you do a video on Rugby Sevens. Amazing as always. Fan from India..
Nived Palissery didnt know their were rugby fans in india
Rajiv Nanayakkara Its a growing sport here. Not very famous though.
Thanks Nived, sorry it's late, but I've got a whole bunch of ones to go through!
Hi Rajiv, not a famous sport in India by any means, but growing in popularity for sure.
totally agree!
Thank you this helped a lot
As a suggestion, maybe you can do one on rugby league nines.
I just started to watch rugby 7s this year and I can say I like it better then 15 aside. I really like how if you missed a tackle the guy will most luckily score instead of getting tackled in 15s.
Yes, I will agree in some part with that. It makes Union a faster flowing, higher scoring game, for sure. Thanks man.
Guile's theme does really go with everything.
Yes, it really does. It would go with pretty much all of my videos, so the theory does hold true! Thanks for stopping by! :)
Nice vid, keep it up!
Thanks man, much appreciated!
7’s is the highest form of rugby in Canada. The tourney in Vancouver is crazy
I can imagine.
Thanks my friend asked if I wanted to play rugby with a couple of people and didn't know the rules but know I can go play with them thanks
Great! Glad you like the video. Be sure to check out my videos on the other two forms of Rugby.
Ninh Ly ok I definitely will
Thank you for your help!
Thanks Ryan!
Check out my channel for more like this :)
Yay i love this game!!!
Me too ... it's awesome! :)
Great video! Do you think you could explain the rules to jai-alai?
If there's enough demand maybe. But truth be told, I don't even know how that's played.
Loved Sevens, Now do the nines, still waiting on MMA, Bowling, Dodgeball, and some paralympic sports such as Goalball, boccia, and Wheelchair Rugby
You'll be waiting a long while - I'm unfortunately not a machine.
After i saw this Video + Watching Nintendo Wii U Rio 2016 Rugby 7 Gameplay, i wish that another movie about Rugby could be made, this time Bowser as the Main Character, watching Invictus with Morgan Freeman & Matt Damon gives me those ideas, it looks awsome!.
I don't think I ever saw that one.
Hi ninh you can make a video about the floorball rules. thanks
Probably if I get more demand.
Can you do a difference between box and field lacrosse please
Didn't you just ask that on one of my other videos?
Both of my lacrosse videos aren't watched all that much, and I would assume that the differences would be obvious once you've watched both of those.
If I get more demand, I'll consider it, but I don't see it.
Hey Ninh for your next sport you should do 3x3 basketball it has a lot of major rule differences then its 5v5 counterpart.
Ummm, it's not really a sport I had in mind. You're the only one that's asked for it so far.
Besides, I have an even better one lined up in the future ... 20 of them in fact.
I thought it may be the right time to ask since the FIBA 3x3 world championship starts this month.
I get that. And yeah in hindsight, it'd be pretty cool to do a video about if there's enough demand for it.
The links to your recommended follow-up videos at the end of this video are not active links. Did you mean to do that?
You used to be able to create links via annotations. UA-cam have now scrapped annotations so they don't work anymore. You can still find those videos on my channel. Thanks.
Do you have to be in contact with a ball when you touch it to the ground after a try? It doesn't seem like it but I was wondering if something like a spike from american football would work to confirm a try.
Yes, you must place the ball on the ground with downward pressure as mentioned in the video.
You must be in full contact with the ball over the try line, and you cannot be out of bounds at any point.
You cannot spike the ball - this does not count.
Thanks for the clarification! Great video.
0:46 In American football, you do not need to touch the ball against the ground to score a touchdown (despite the name).
Question, if the teams are tied after Extra Time, is a penalty shootout applied?
Just a draw
Is that ryu's SF theme that I hear?
nice vid and playing the street fighter theme nice
Anytime, glad you like this video. And well spotted on the SFV themes!
Check out my channel for more like this :)
Just realized Guiles theme was being played
Maybe eventually you can explain rugby x and also 100 ball cricket.
Are those even things?
I saw them explained during the rugby and cricket world cups. You might hear more about rugby x if you keep watching the Rugby World Cup. Or see a brief preview here:

One other great thing about sevens… The fancy dress parties in the stands!
Not really an aspect of the game itself ... but kinda, yeah.
Isn't passing rules the same for 7s and union ? i.e. no forward passing only sideways and back ?
Yes, this was mentioned in the video. The games are identical except for a few rules.
@@NinhLyUK thanks .. I was just asking because the way it was explained in the video it was implying the no passing forward rule is only for rugby 7s
You should make a video on Auckland 9s
If I get enough demand, sure.
may I point out that in matches that are considered to be finals (cup final, bronze final etc) the game lasts 20 minutes instead of 14
May I point out that I'm aware of that, but this is a beginners video and doesn't include every nuance.
By doing so, would confuse a complete beginner who doesn't know what Rugby Sevens is.
Ninh Ly fair shout
crazy athletic ability
Totally agree. These guys are big ... and fast ... and agile ... and they can hit hard. Scary combination!
So do most sevens players start off playing union first? Or league or sevens?
Sevens is a variation of Rugby Union, so generally Union first. However, there are plenty of League converts as well as converts from other sports, such as 100m/200m sprinters.
Anyone play sevens thrive in both codes.
Ninh did u know there's a type of rugby league called nines? Maybe u could make a video about rugby league nines?
Yes, I'm fully aware of nines.
If I get time to make it I might.
If I don't, I won,'t.
you can throw the ball to the scrum only from the left side ?
The law states that 'The scrum half must throw in the ball from the side of the scrum first chosen' so I think that means that the scrum half must pick a side and keep throwing the ball from that side.
I think every scrum they can choose which side but they can't choose one side and then quickly swap to the other side......unlike 15's where they can only put it in from the left.
ok, came here after watching some Olympic rugby highlights. Why do some people run into the "end zone" and not immediately touch the ball down? It seems they run in the back and wait until someone is going to tackle them and then touch it down. Is that some sort of show boating? Do they get more points or something the longer they are there?
The conversion kick (the extra 2 points) will be on the same line as where the ball is touched down, generally you're going to want to touch down right behind the goal posts.
@@forestflood5338 ah, that now makes sense. Thanks much!
What @Forest Flood said.
Lacrosse came up with their own version of this called "Sixes" and its drastically different from 10v10 lacrosse
Hi can u make a video on the rules of croquet
If there's enough demand, but I don't see it. You're the only one that's asked for that.
Ninh Ly Ok fair enough
do the rules to mixed martial arts plz!
Maybe if there's enough demand.
I like rugby sevens because it’s more fun more space less players less time and I’m looking forward to it 😎
Sure.
Rugby sevens play with the Rugby Union and League ball it's okay?
Yes.
BGM is… Guiles theme in Street Fighters 2?!
Also, if an opposing player intercepts the ball but has a knock-on because of it, that's deemed as a deliberate knock-on. The player will be given an yellow card (the player sits out of play for 2 minutes)
I'm playing rugby sevens tomorrow with my friends only difference is, we play for 15 mins each half and a 5 min break half time, basically there's 16 of us we rotate each time to have 2 people who ref I had my turn to ref last time we played, I always play as either fly half or scrum half.
Interesting variation of the rules?! I know that in championship games the IRB may allow 10 minute halves but that's it. 15 minutes is way too long for a Sevens game.
Its just to make the game a little bit longer, we're only there just to have fun. not play professionally or competitively, and it a good cardio work out.
Nice
Thanks Steven!
I thought all forms of rugby do not allow forward passes?
What's the Time Duration ?
The amount of time of the contest.
Explain the rules of badminton
Already did.
It looks to me that the rule about who kicks the restart after the score differs among the three codes but no one can be bothered to explain.
I believe it only differs in Sevens.
Guile's Theme in the background :3
Well spotted! I think it's an awesome rendition! :)
I think we can officially say Guile's Theme goes with rugby!
Finally
These things take ages to make, I'm not joking!
Ninh Ly no I mean I finally a found a rugby 7s rule video
Oh right ... ummm, I must admit there's not that many around.
I think Rugby Nines is the best but there's no serious & consistent tournament for it
The lack of consistency is probably what brings Nines down. Otherwise, it's a totally watchable sport.
Subscribe & check out my channel for more like this :)
What does five subs with five interchanges mean?
5 subs - there are 5 people sat on the bench.
5 interchanges - you can swap players 5 times.
Oh you've already done it
You might want to check my other videos before you post comments for requests.
Do rules of Aukland Nines
Too many variations of the game.
I freaking love the sevens game, but the only thing I don't like is the 2 7 minute halves thing. I know why they do it, but I wish they would play 4 7 minute quarters instead. I love high scoring contests and with only 14 players on a pitch, there's plenty of offense, but I want more scoring and longer games.
The scoring is high enough anyway. Whilst I agree that games should be longer, realistically they came up with 'seven minutes' to keep games short and tournaments last a single day. It's mainly for TV and marketing purposes, not necessarily what's best for the game. Thanks bro!
It's the same as 15s except with backs pretty much. I've played 7s and 15s.
Basically, yes and with a few other nuances.
anyone else watching this because of ilona maher?
I was looking for this comment lmao
Lots.
0:46 I don't know why I have the sudden urge to play street fighter, for some strange reason.
Guile's theme goes with everything ...!
Converts do not need to be kicked from 20M out. They can be kicked from any distance as long as they're in line with where the try was grounded.
Yes.
Rugby sevens would make a *great* indoor sport. Think arena football, only it's rugby. That way you could have longer games in the same format.
Tackles would hurt though.
@@NinhLyUK That's a good point. I didn't think of that. And they can't really put pads on the floor.
What If You Score a Try on a Conversion?
Edit Oh Wait, I’ve Just Read it In The Thingy At 3:20 lol xD! #NeverCommentTooEarly
Yeah, never mind.
But for clarification, you cannot score a try from a conversion kick.
wonder how much tickets for a 14 minute game are.
That's the great thing about 7's - you don't just watch one game.
They're played in a tournament format, with matches played one after another so you could watch about at least 12 games of Rugby Sevens for the price of 1 ticket.
Ok
1:10 - onto the ground not the floor. Also 1:47.
Street fighter music lets go
There's not many SFV tracks I haven't used!
I thought you don’t drop goal in 7s.. the only way people get it would be a try and a conversion, no??
Apparently so.
Like your videos on sports but there is a mistake in both of your videos on Rugby Union and Rugby 7s. The conversion is not awarded 20 meters from the goal line but everywhere on the perpendicular line through the spot of try.
It's roughly at the 22, though it can be further away or closer than the 22. I often use the term 'the twenty' as that's what everyone calls the 22 on average.
imagine being benched in a 7 on 7 game, 14 mins go by fast.
Certainly does!
They usually play 3 or 4 matches in one day though so you get relatively decent game time even though you are on the bench
Do aukland 9's
Maybe if enough demand.
Ninh Ly Anyway great channel
Thanks! :)
What are 9s?
its rugby leagues answer to the sevens ,which i think is a yearly game , one or maybe two day tournament i think might be wrong ,only difference is NRLclubs compete in 9s and sevens rugby union ,is a world series game played all over the world with countries competing for the world series title on a yearly basis
Street fighter?
Yes, the Guile Theme from Street Fighter V
The three forces of rugby are sitting in peace and silence.
And Australians also make their 7-men rule, the AFLX.
Wrong sport. That's Aussie Rules, not Rugby.
this playing street fighter music?
Yes
10s?
I don't think there's a thing.
