    It's interesting to watch Gene Siskel's reaction. He went from good-natured amusement to polite disagreement to genuine stunned disbelief that Roger Ebert didn't like this movie and refused to even discuss it.

    Brain Candy is one of the greatest dystopian dark comedies of all time (along with Brazil). This is one of the most epic arguments I've ever seen between Bert and Ernie. And Siskel was right this time.

    Despite all the hate it got from Eberts, I'm with Siskel, RIP bro, even though I'm biased to my favorite comedy troupe which taught how to be a comedian at a young age. If you understand all the social norms and political issues ushered out, you do have a gem here to make people laugh. A bit of education is required but if can get pass that then every "kid's" acting range, not even getting to shrewdly pulled stage sets and flawlessly crossdressing expertise applied, should come in one form or another for comical study as pave way as a foundation for comedians of the future. WKUK did this very well. It's just another page from out of Monty Python is what KITH is.

  • @jasonmccrank4981
    @jasonmccrank4981 3 роки тому +12

    The Kids themselves aren't very big fans of the movie - they were fighting a lot during the writing and production - but I think that it's hilarious.
    I wish that they hadn't broken up around this time. They're the true heir apparents to Monty Python. The fans need another movie.

      They both had the occasional off review, and I think a lot of the time they probably exaggerated their displeasure to play off the other. In this one, I think Ebert is hamming it up just to make sparks. The main shtick of this show was the interplay between them, and it would be boring for them to agree too much. They were just as much a part of Hollywood as their subjects, an entertainment product after all.

    I've realized that Ebert needs to be force-fed emotions in his movies. He doesn't experience things like horror, humor, or sadness unless the characters are experiencing it on screen. It's perfectly expected that he wouldn't "get" this movie, as it mashes the absurd together with the mundane, to the point where moments of sanity are perceived as insane.

    Brain Candy is another one to add to the long list of dumb films that were still somehow too intelligent for Roger Ebert to understand.
    It's a funny, well-made film, but obviously it's not fucking high-brow satire or anything. It's campy by design, that's the point, and yet somehow ol' Ebert still misses it entirely.

    Don't get me wrong, I love The Kids in the Hall. I've watched all seasons twice, I watched their tour DVD from 2002 and even watched "Death Comes to Town" (bizarre, but enjoyable). I think they're absolutely fantastic in their humor but the movie was just dull. Extremely dull and not funny at all. I wouldn't say so. He liked Superbad, The 40 Year-Old Virgin, and added Groundhog Day to his "Great Movies" collection.

    I thought Kids in the hall was the funniest show I have ever seen, and brain candy was the funniest movie ever. Maybe because these are my type of humor.

    From the clips it looks like I'd have to side with Ebert this time: "My sense of humor was STARVING for a laugh!"

    I wonder if Ebert ever got around to watching it again.

    It is entirely appropriate that this film made the two.most famous film critics of all time go to war.

    This is typical of Ebert, always seeking what he perceived as hip and trashing everything else. Kids in the Hall were genius, and this film was their best work..

    Loved Ebert most of the time but about 1/5 movies or so I completely disagreed with him. This is one such case. The movie did have some dead spots here and there but the central idea was a wonderful satire on the drug companies. Id give it 2.4 stars out of 4. A solid effort with some funny scenes.

    But I can't blame Ebert, it's a cult film. It appeals to a very specific sense of humour. I'm actually surprised Siskel got the joke. Great movie, but I don't resent anybody for not.
