Siskel & Ebert Classics - Worst of 1990

- Gene and Roger's Ten "Worst" of 1990. As usual, these are not necessarily "THE worst", but are the top 10 disappointments/flops in terms of major star, major studio releases from the year. From my own tape archive! As a reminder, if you're looking for the latest home video reviews -- from Blu-Rays of classic catalog titles to the latest releases -- be sure to check out my own review site at www.andyfilm.com
"A teenage Heidi is shipped off to a cruel Italian orphanage--Gene, stop laughing." I miss these two!
That made me laugh. 😄 I wasn't alive during most of their lifetime but thanks to UA-cam I'm catching glimpses of these two greats and really enjoying their take on movies!
"Fortunately, Charlie Sheen comes to her rescue!" - talk about a laugh line 😂
*On the bright side of things, 'Ghost Dad' is no longer the worst thing Bill Cosby has ever done...*
Haaaaa, cheers
Lol
That was gold
Pill Cosby
Yeah, those Jello commercials were the worst
It interesting that in 1990 that they were complaining about sequels and reboots. That’s almost all we get now.
“Fortunately Charlie Sheen comes to her rescue”
That poor girl.
I'm not a skier, but that had to be a visual effect in the clip.

Roger's rant about Eddie Murphy was downright prophetic.
He was replaced by Martin Lawrence, who was replaced by Chris Rock, who was replaced by Kevin Hart.
Took awhile, though. Things didn't blow up until 2002.
@@gamesthatiplay9083 where's Chris Tucker in there?
@@refinedsugar Chris Tucker made himself too rare to be in there and that was by design. In his entire film career(31 years), he's only been in 13 films(and a couple television movies). That's FAR less than even Chris Rock.
Eddie Murphy was never that funny.
I don't think I took Siskel and Ebert for granted the first time around, but watching this reminded me there are no replacements today for intelligent professionals like they were. Thank-you so much for this post! They were as great as I remembered them to be.
Let’s not forget the fine quality of movies back then. They’d have nothing to do today.
@@chop3625 You talk about fine quality of movies while watching a video on awful movies from that time you're romanticizing lol
They were replaced by imaginary movie critics invented by movie studios to have quotes on posters. Then in the 00s, one of them admit, oh yeah that movie critic doesn't actually exist, that's why he doesn't review anyone else's film.
@@cchavezjr7 This collection of bad movies is maybe 10% of movies that year, come on
@@RogueReplicant You're looking back with rose tinted glasses. There were great movies but there was a ton of crap also. Yes, this collection is a small % but my reply was also a joke, you didn't catch the "lol" at the end? It's ironic to be saying how good movies are in a video about the bad ones. You must be great at parties.
Siskel laughing while Ebert was describing that laughably bad plot synopsis for "Courage Mountain" is hilarious.
There's a movie I never knew existed lol
@@refinedsugar only knew about it from a trsiler at the start of a second-hanf VHS tape
“If a movie is going to be bad and if it’s going to be wholesome too….Then it’s really going too far.” Touché.

If these two were still alive, they would be panning just about everything that's coming out of Hollywood today
And, rightfully so.
And twould be *glorious*
I think it’s the same thing now as it was back then. There are the shallow, popcorn movies for people who don’t want to think too deep and then there are the deep, Oscar worthy films that nobody wants/cares/knows about. The Whale is an amazing movie that had me crying and it just came out….but yeah, most people would rather watch Top Gun.
They would need a 2hr time slot to cover all the garbage Hollywood spits out.
Especially movies by Will Ferrell and all the SNL alums
These guys left us way too early. We should still be watching them Sunday nights around dinner time after an afternoon of football.
Yep! Especially after the Pittsburgh Steelers won a game!🤪😜🤪!!!
(Sorry...I couldn't help myself. I'm a huge Pittsburgh Steelers fan.
Try not to hold it against me...)
I'm British I never saw these guys till recently, and was impressed by Thier professional, low key approach, watching then makes me sad , knowing we will never see people, that well infomred and competent on TV anymore, you have to watch UA-cam for decent commentary
Part of the problem is Gene died and eventually Roger left as his health declined... and the replacement people weren't anywhere as entertaining. So eventually the show ended and Ebert said he felt the whole syndicated reviews show idea was over and the internet is the way now.
The words "an equally wasted nick nolte" would definitely mean something else in a few years.
They're too hard on Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. It may not be the style of children's movie they're used to, but it did a good job of creating the kind of movie its target audience wanted to see. As part of that target audience when it premiered, I can say that it had just as much magic and excitement as a Disney or Pixar movie. I still have my grade 3 art assignment that I made about TMNT!
13:47 Children will have trouble accepting talking turtles that eat pizza.
That's a horrible take.
How much money was made by slapping a green Turtles logo on merchandise?
The actual film challenged what people at the time thought of as a "children's movie."
People now may not be aware that the darker tone of the film caused a massive backlash amongst parents. But the film proved that children are perfectly capable of accepting understanding and appreciating more complex storytelling.
Great movie, now a classic, so what did they know!?!
It was, and is, a GREAT movie.
Nah. TMNT is a crummy movie.
@@terrelgeer7298 I bet you loved the Michael Bay films, and I guarantee you clap and cheer at Marvel movies.
Siskel and Ebert are the "Waldorf & Statler" of Movie Critics. Always entertaining to watch.
Yes.
Siskel: That movie was revolting.
Ebert: So was the audience after they saw what they paid to see it.
@@JanetDax 😂
They remind me of Adam and Jamie
Yup.
Siskel: "Child Play 2...........Who was this _trash_ made for?" 🤣
Me. 🤣 🤣
I'm sure Eddie Murphy took their advice and made nothing but smart script picks in the 90s. 🤣
And look where he ended up. He completely flushed his integrity down the toilet for money. He’s shameless.
Well, I can see why Romero would want to remake Night of the Living Dead, given that he lost the rights to the original and doesn't make a dime from it (it is public domain). That's one scenario that makes sense to me for remakes.
He didn't remake it
Tom Savini remade it
Romero didn't direct but he was involved with it
The Tom Savini _Night of the Living Dead_ remake is actually really good. Not 'better', but solid.
TMNT was amazing as a kid and at 40 I still watch it occasionally
My sister turned 40 last year, and my brother turns 40 this year. He got an autograph from one of the turtles.
"Regular or menthol?"

@@DragonTVSJC holy crap, I didn't realize it was sam rockwell! That is amazing... It's been so long. as a kid that scene was badass to me haha
It's one of the best comic book movies ever made. Being on any worst list is just ridiculous.
It's sometimes more fun to watch these guys rate bad movies than it is good ones.
Their reviews are funnier than the actual movies
The "Worst Of" episodes have more views on here than the "Best Of" episodes, which is odd to me.
the "worst" was my favorite show of the year..
Except when they attack a good but not great movie. I liked their shows that they disagreed on a particular movie and got hot about it. Star Wars was one of these. Close Encounters was another. I thought both of these films were great Raiders Of The Lost Ark was another one they disagreed on. Of course this was in their early shows in the 70s ..
Yup.
$7 a ticket??? Oh! The Outrage!
4:22 Siskel says Cosby should "give up control".
That advice is horrifically applicable to his personal life too.
Child's Play 2 is my favorite in the franchise, and I enjoy every entry.
Dabney was typically funny in Short Time, though I remember having the deepest nap of my life during Sibling Rivalry.
14:14 "Gene, stop laughing" that cracked me up :-)
Me too! Even when they agreed it was hilarious!
The description of their viewing of Nutcracker Prince was similarly hilarious.
"You still got the price tag on ya! (yow!) Don't you know who I am? (yow yow!) I wrote the book! (yow yow yow!)" 🤣😂🤣
7 bucks a ticket?
The Good Ol' Days! Now, they're twice the price!
That’s what I say 😃
Keep up the great work w/the uploads. Always grateful.
my pleasure :) appreciate the kind words.
@@andyfilm5785 You're welcome
@No One It really is
I was waiting for Mori's Day to call Prince a "jive turkey".
Wow that music! Brought me back to my childhood tv room and watching this with my parents. Wow, didnt expect a time travel.
The foresight on Eddie Murphy's career was pretty spot on.
Maybe he had a contract with Paramount, so only could do movies they offered him?
Since March 25, 1981, he had a contract with the studio for the first time, so only
he could do a few projects they offered him, including the 48 Hours/Beverly Hills Cop
franchises, Trading Places, Coming to America, Coming 2 America, The Golden Child
and Dreamgirls, the 2006 musical adaptation which earned his only Oscar nomination
in 2007.
About Bill Cosby, Siskel says "Give up control". Oh Gene, you were so right.
I couldn't agree with you more, Gene.
Way back in early 1990 I had such high hopes for "RoboCop 2" and was extremely disappointed after seeing it on the big screen.
Gene SIskel observed that movie year 1990 was dominated by marketing, which for him explained the box office totals of "Bird on a Wire", "Another 48 Hrs." and "Robocop 2" (all of which he panned), as well as the $40 million campaign of the film "Dick Tracy" that included a tie-in with McDonald's restaurants. He had a low opinion of a report in _Advertising Age_ that suggested that advertising executives were being recruited to run the major studios, lamenting, "Does the product they're selling matter anymore? Cigars, cigarettes, movie?". He also quoted Barry Levinson, "a successful commercial director", as observing that "the 30-second TV spot is ruining the business. If the studios can't see a way to sell a story in a 30-second TV ad, they won't make it into a movie".
A positive that he noted in 1990 was in the romantic movie category, where films such as "Ghost" and "Pretty Woman" were favorites of critics and audiences alike. Gene observed that this was because "audiences are always in the mood for a good love story. They're just hard to write. You have to love both men _and_ women, and most screenwriters are ignorant of women."
The big business report of 1990 was another positive for Gene, who reported that the acquisiton of MCA (parent of Universal Studios) by Matsushita Electrical Industrial Co., Ltd. of Japan may cure Hollywood's "terrible phobia for technological change" by ensuring that "technological innovation will be corporate policy"; he also chastised those critical of the purchase of "a[n American] company named Universal" by a Japanese firm.
For "Pretty Woman" and "the more daring" "Internal Affairs", Gene singled out Richard Gere as the "Comeback [Actor] of the Year". Gene also named Goldie Hawn (for "Bird on a Wire") and Gene Wilder (for "Funny About Love", one of the films panned in this video), as the "Tired Acts" of 1990.
Gene said that the trigonometry sequence from "Lambada" was the silliest scene of 1990.
"Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles" (which is discussed briefly, and which Roger went easy on in this video), "Home Alone" and "Total Recall" were in Gene's "You Liked It, I Didn't" category for 1990.
(SOURCE: Chicago Tribune, December 23, 1990)
[See the comment section of andyfilm's upload of S&E's "Best of 1990" for films Gene liked in 1990, both as runners-up to his top ten and as films he personally enjoyed.]
Thanks for the info.
They didn’t like Home Alone? TMNT was great for kids
@@sahej6939 Their review of "Home Alone" was negative, but it was "Two Stars" negative, rather than the "One-and-One-Half-to-Zero" stars negative that typified their worst-of lists.
Gene didn’t like Total Recall?!? Geez terrible critical error
The Night of the Living Dead remake was badass. I love how Tom Savini turned Barbara into Ellen Ripley.
And then J Michael Stracynzki turned her into a god-like telepath
Short Time may not have been a great movie, but it had one of the best car chase scenes ever. Even more impressive considering it was a low budget comedy and not a high budget action movie.
I live "Short Time."
And you're right, it does have one of the best car chases EVER! 💃
I just watched it on UA-cam and you're right
It was a good comedy movie, and yes, the car chase scene was worth the price of admission alone. They got that one wrong.
One of the best of 90
Short Time was the one movie in this list S&E got wrong. It was a pretty funny movie, and not all that bad.
We just lost Kristie Alley. RIP Kristie.

"Short Time" had one of the greatest car chases of all time in it. And all practical effects and real stunt work.
used to come on HBO all the time back then loved it, I was only 10 then but hay
I saw it on cable a year later, liked it and watch it every few years. "What kind of cop-killer are you?"
"I love you Bert Simpson."
These guys are absolutely right about remakes and sequels. Sometimes it’s better to leave it alone
The problem with that statement is that it isn't wrong. The problem with that statement is that there have been good sequels and remakes before, but every hollywood executive took it for wrong lessons and just said 'let em make cash' for no reason.
I guess Gene must have had tremendous respect for Keanu Reeves... passing on Speed 2!
Man, was Roger prescient about Eddie Murphy's career... it was already in free fall by 1990 as I recall

They'd probably be reading about him in those papers they're reading in the intro, lol
Same with Charlie Sheen, and how “Courage mountain” was somehow the thing he was most embarrassed about.

A lot of people did, just didn't say anything
@@fixxxer3456 certainly plenty of people in Cosby’s inner circle had to have known about it but I doubt that either Siskel or Ebert was aware of it, even for all the insider knowledge that both of them had regarding the industry
Funny how most of these have been totally forgotten, although Robocop 2 is kinda underrated. And, of course, TMNT is an all-time classic and they just can't appreciate true art. 😁
(Also, Shrek was the best thing to happen to Eddie Murphy since "Raw," as this illustrates.)
Plus the first TMNT movie is pretty close to the comic book, the only thing director Steve Barron changed was the ending.
I hate the word "underrated;" it's totally overused on UA-cam comments.

So sad seeing Kirstie Allie after just losing her!💔💔😇😇 godbless and test her soul!
She was a well known nut.
There was something funny about _Sibling Rivalry_ where both main characters think they killed the guy in bed. I think it also had Carrie Fisher in it as the overbearing sister-in-law, that she finally tells off. Maybe it has its problems because I don't remember the full plot just now.
Its amazing they did a worst of 1990 episode and somehow did NOT mention Bonfire of the Vanities.
Bonfire of the Vanities came out late in December that year. Very possible they hadn't seen it yet.
14:14 Gene, stop laughing!
How can he NOT?!!
Another 48 Hrs. was reportedly recut a week or so before it opened because Paramount wanted to get as many showings out of it as they could because Total Recall was a big hit that summer. Brion James, may he rest in peace, who played the villain Kehoe/Iceman said they cut a lot of his scenes as well as Frank McRae who appears only in background scenes. They even cut why they called it Another 48 Hrs. and it was because Jack Cates (Nick Nolte) had 48 hours before his hearing. This along with the Coming to America lawsuit showing Paramount tried to cheat Eddie Murphy out of residuals soured his relationship with Paramount for many years.

Definitely don't want to go on $2 day, if they do another one of those in 2023.
I thought Another 48 Hours was pretty fun. And it's the only movie of the 90s where the characters are shown to reload guns.

"This is my happening and it freaks me out!"
Ebert dated Oprah once. He had to remind her, when he was a guest on her talk show. She says she doesn't remember 🙃
The Night of the Living Dead remake was made solely for money and I have no problem with that. Due to some error, the original was released without a copyright. He did the remake to recoup money lost by the original investors. And it's a good remake with a good slight twist ending. And it gave Tom Savini who was supposed to do the effects for the original, but was drafted for Nam, a chance to work his magic.
I totally forgot about Graffiti Bridge and how terrible it was, weird how Prince got a pass for that turd.
I think because it wasn’t as hyped as Purple Rain (which succeeded) or Under The Cherry Moon (which bombed), it just slid off the radar quickly.
Shutup Merkin
I think because Prince completely rebounded the very next year with the Diamonds & Pearls album, but his career was always very up and down since Purple Rain. Prince’s music was always so adventurous and infectious and his skill as a musician was so strong ultimately that the public overlooked his career lows. His movie prospects definitely ended after Graffiti Bridge though.
These two men are truly legendary. Taught me a lot on appreciation and criticism of movies. Their commentary on sequels and remakes was ahead of its time with the way things are now.
Critics cant do, so they criticize.
Cringey existence imo
They were spot on with the direction Eddie Murphys career was going
I disagree about Tom Savini’s Night of the Living Dead. It’s under-appreciated.

Night of the Living Dead was rad. Tom Savini directing. Great location. And Barbara turns into a badass.
I wonder if Siskel & Ebert actually watched the remake of The Night of the Living Dead. The remakes story had many changes which worked well.
Yes, they reviewed it, why wouldn't they actually watched it ?
Cosby: A man who can do no wrong on television, nothing right in movies, and anything he wants with an unconscious date.
Funny that they're criticizing an Eddie Murphy sequel in 1990....Roger was totally right about his future roles. "Norbit" comes to mind. I won't even mention "Pluto Nash!"
“Who was this trash made for?…and why would you want to sit next to them in a movie theatre?”….great quip from Gene and applicable to almost every mindless unoriginal movie made today.

Child's Play 2 is fantastic, specifically the the last act in the factory.
I like to make queso for that big Childs Play 2 finale :]
Yeah, Siskel always had a stupid boner for "children in peril". He even hated Aliens for the exact same reason
Better than 3, shame they never reviewed it.
I loved TMNT when it came out. Yes, it's dumb, but it was fun.
Which movie would you least want to watch again? What a great question
First off, anything Prince does is purple. Purple meaning perfect. ** I don't know about anyone else, but now I MUST see Robocop 2.
