The one time Himmel is at his darkest, emotionally, it is (so far) the only time his eyes are kept out of frame. That whole scene is an inversion of every other portrayal of Himmel, and packs a heck of a gut punch.
I wonder how long this must have haunted Himmel feeling responsibility and guilt for causing the village chief to die. Even when it wasn't him who killed the chief, I can still see someone like Himmel really struggling with that and suffering from a lot of guilt
@@logikx1325 And most probably it was the only time. After this harsh experience he must have trusted Frieren's judgement without any hesitation. He tried his best, failed, and then truly realized that she has 1000 years more experience with demons than him. Knowing Himmel, he must have scolded himself no end both for his own stupidity and mistrust of Frieren's knowledge.
Oh yeah.. that makes a LOT of sense with what happens next episode (I know they've watched past this but I'll keep it spoiler free for future viewers in case they follow along Ep by Ep)
Remember that Himmel was regularly checking up on Qual until close to his death. He appears to have been active after the party split, still huning monsters and demons.
Them demons was _scared_ to death of Himmel, even well in his old age. Also love "Throne Elf" for the name of that character. 😂 Let's be sure that name sticks around.
As well as elves, demons don't age or do it really slow, so they could not understand whether Himmel is old or not. But probably, they know that demons can outlive humans, so they just stick to waiting tactics.
16:43 I can't believe how both of you fall for the demon's speech 3 min after explaining that they will always trick you!! (but i did the same thing, that's why i love it :D)
Also, do you know why that demon child said, "Mommy, it hurts"? It's the cries of the child that demon ate. That demon child did not know what it meant but used it since it "imitates" speech. It got lucky. After saying it, Himmel hesitated. Then it was spared. It learned that the word, "Mommy" is a magic word that stops it from dying.
I thing i noticed, the Demons reaaaaaally feared Himmel specifically, they became really active after his dead, Heiter was alive for a while, Aizen is still alive and also Frieren, but Himmel was keeping them at bay truly
My favorite thing about the demons is that they genuinely don't care about the lies they tell. It's not like Lugner has made a study of human interpersonal dynamics and knows what a father means to a family, he just knows that this particular line of bullcrap is going to work, and so long as it works he Does Not Care Why.
We are not fairy Tale - Himmel addressing that Flamme is now such for all. That is how much time have passed. But they are not . They were real people and the statues are token of remembrance from Himmel to Frieren
Frieren is an elf and Elves have all the same feelings, emotions and social concepts that humans have. The only difference an Elf has from a human is their concept of time. To an elf 100 years is nothing but to a human it's a lifetime. Consider this, humans meet and marry creating a family usually during the first 2 to 3 decades of out lives. During that time frame we grow up, learn a skill to support ourselves and interact with our friends and family and our social circle, leading to us finding the person we wish to spend our time with and marry to create a family. The elves do the exact same thing but with a different time perception. The Elves in this setting are almost the same as the Elves in Tolkien's Lord of the Rings. They are practically immortal unless killed in battle and have perfect memories. That means that they do not perceive time in the same way a human does. For them learning a skill won't take a few years, an elf might spent a couple of centuries perfecting their art, but to them it would be the same thing a human did while going to college for 4 years. So, in comparison to the human example I mention above, an elf would grow up for about a century, learn a skill they are interested in for a couple of centuries, meet someone nice during that time and spent time with them for a couple more centuries and then get married. The same thing a human would do, but because of the different life expectancy and time perception, that leads to a dissonance and conflict between the races. We have seen this already with Fern. It's not that Frieren doesn't care for Fern or she doesn't understand her, it's simply the fact that Frieren can easily spent a decade in a village taking the sights and learning everything there is to know about the area and nothing of note would have happened in the world. Fern cannot do that. Also note that the comment Frieren did about Elves lacking reproductive urges and romantic feelings is also wrong, but I won't go into details here because you need to see a few more episodes for the information to make sense. Just know that that comment is wrong for now. So in conclusion the Elves are nothing like Demons. The Elves have all the feelings, emotions and social norms that humans have, the demons on the other hand are sociopaths, lacking any empathy and understanding of human morality. They are predators through and through. They are like a tiger that has stalked their prey and are ready to pounce. A tiger might learn to imitate the sound of it's prey to lure it in, but it doesn't understand nor does it care to understand it's prey. The Demons are the same, they want to conquer the town and prey on the humans. They learned the language in order to learn how to better lure their prey. They don't care to understand humans, Elves and dwarves in a deeper level, they only need to communicate to deceive their prey and avoid unnecessary conflict.
The only thing i would change is using the word Sociopathy for Demons....If a human was like they were it would be sociopathy but as is the point of this episode that state isnt a pathology it IS there normal nature not a pathology
"Where is the line drawn between demons and other races like Elves and dwarfs?" One "race" eats humans, and the others don't Also, yeah you could say demons and frieren are "similar," but the definitive difference is that frieren doesn't actively go around deceiving humans and ploting for their downfall
I _love_ the direction you're thinking regarding the parallels between Frieren and the Demons. Frieren's entire demeanor changes as soon as she talks to a demon, especially in the scenes where there are no humans around to watch their conversation. All emotion just goes out the window when neither party needs to perform for humans.
Demons are monsters meant to be destroyed, there is no value in letting them live. Also the scene where Stark asks Frieren what there destination is and she answers with "Heaven" while thinking of Himmel, "Himmel" translates to "Heaven" in german. Perfect scene
It's true that elves do not easily form bonds, but they can. It just takes them a while to get attached because they live so long. They have all the time in the world, after all. Frieren herself is a bit of an extreme case in this respect, even among elves, for reasons that will become clear in a few episodes. But Frieren is not emotionless. In fact, her entire story is her retracing her steps to better understand and deepen the bonds she at first neglected, applying the lessons from her previous party to her current one and vice versa, and growing as a person in the process. Meanwhile, demons just outright cannot feel. Their brains simply aren't wired to feel or understand more complex, human emotions. Thus, they cannot form bonds to begin with, nor understand why other humans get so angry when they kill one. This fundamental disconnect is why Frieren says talking to a demon is pointless. Even if they are serious about reaching an agreement through discussion, human feelings simply cannot ever reach them.

Frieren's words about elves makes me think they're like pandas. For people that wanted the show to have more than an arc. Here we go! This show goes back to showing how demons are just that. Demons. Lots of shows like to use them as a people we just don't understand and fear, but here, we see how much they just see humans as food and speech is just a way to trick humans. When I watched this episode for the first time, Frieren's brief blashback reminded me of Luke Skywalker's moment when he returns to find his home destroyed in Tatooine.
Monsters do not belong in the circle of life, nothing feeds on them. Demons are a type of monster that talks. The Qual is one of the first ones we met who specialize in piercing magic, Zoltrack. Frieren might be a little detached because humans don’t last, but not because she is incapable of feeling. She cried for Himmel, she wants to know humans better because she misses Him. Demons want to know humans better to deceive them. Frieren is just an introvert night owl that likes to take her time to live. (Also, I would say, Frieren is autistic, and unmasks most of the time.)
Even if she's not autistic, I'd argue that she's absolutely traumatized due to SPOILERS. Who knows how long it takes an Elf to get over something like that, especially when thrust into such a different world when so comparatively young.
If you ever feel like your job is impossible, you could be Fern trying to change the behavior of a 1000+ year old elf with nothing but positive reinforcement.
Unlike other animes, this really shows what demons like really are. There are no good demons. Some other kids were brainwashed by some animes that there are good demons. There is no such thing like that. Parents should be very careful unto their kids on what animes they should watch.
I hope you're able to watch this arc in one sitting so you get all of your questions answered without spoilers. When this was airing, I withheld watching it for Christmas vacation and was glad I did when this arc came around.
the names of the characters comes from german. lugner means liar, himmel means blue sky, eisen means iron, .... etc... and throne elf is (ı dont want to give you spoiler :D ) ı can say 10th episode is the best episode for me. you will understand when you see:D love you guys.
Qual is ALSO one of the Seven Sages of Destruction, he is just specifically the Sage of Corruption. Don't want to say more, but we do learn about the others in flashbacks etc. And another comes up in the manga after the anime.
@@MichaelRBrown-lh6kn ALSO Mr. Smartypants... this IS a massive spoiler in itself if that was true... but maybe you should go re-read... because up to chapter 130... no Qual is NOT
@@MichaelRBrown-lh6kn well, stating, that qual would be one of the sages of destruction, would be a spoiler for anime only watchers, therefore, if it was true, it would be a spoiler
The big thing to remember (21:50) he is not "THE HERO" yet, as they move from village to town to city nobody has heard of him or THEM yet. The flashbacks that we see are the party on their way to merc the Demon King. He is 'HIMmel the guy' for all (most) of the flashbacks we see. Looking back we know he's the Hero, but during their trek he has not yet achieved that acclaim.
This episode and the next two are important for setting down what demons are in the world of Frieren. This is something that too many don't (or refuse) to grasp, trying to claim that Frieren is "racists" against demons.... If you read the manga (which I recommend), in it past where the anime ends, we will meet two further VERY scary demons, who are scary because they are trying to understand humanity.... That's all I'll say.
in a few episodes most of it will be explained, but until then without spoiling anything: what if Frieren's opinion if not based on a trauma, but simply the truth and an objective description of demons.
just for information because german writing is a pain in other languags: the Ü Ä Ö letters, for example in Lügner, can correctly be written by useing the standard letter a o u and an e afterwards. so Lügner will correctly be Luegner or Übel will be Uebel. Most of the times translators work with just a o u but sometimes they wont correctly translate words
It's interesting to me how you keep assuming that the burning house with the swing was 400 years ago just because it was shown after she said that the last time she met a fellow elf was 400 years ago. Unless it says that memory was from 400 years ago, you shouldn't think that.
Himmel must have been an absolute unit. Not only do we see him precisely cut off the demon girl's arms and save the human girl in a literal blink of an eye, but also all the demons were laying low for as long as he was alive, even when he was old, and they only started acting up when he died. Himmel the Hero? More like Himmel the GOAT.
Lugner, literally translates to "Liar" in german. Linie is Line in german and Draht is Wire in german. Additionally, Qual is a very darkly associated word in german, meaning something akin to torture or great suffering. Most of the names in this world seems to have a specific meaning which matches as they are translated in german. Noticing a bit of a pattern here?
Loved the speculative commentary here, but suffice to say most of this will be clarified in future episodes so don't worry. I will note though that in this series humans, elves and dwarves are all lumped together as "humanity," and share much, including likely a common ancestry. Monsters on the other hand are a very different form of life, as you can see by what happens to their bodies upon death. As such, the human-like form and sapience demons developed happened for the sake of making them better at preying on humans, and they remain practically asocial and lacking certain emotions like empathy and guilt (since having those would interfere with preying on humans).
fun fact : himmel is a german word that can be translated as heaven. so frieren said he go to heaven can also be mean he go to himmel fun fact 2 : all the demon that was defeated but failed to get killed because they're running away is hiding themselves and only go on rampage after himmel die, that's how scary strong he is
29:50 this is not a spoiling spoiler i believe and you would benefit from this so i will comment this: yes we will find a more nuanced demon like you said but not this season, maybe on 2nd or 3rd season and it is the best arc imo. We will met One of the most well written character in the series as a demon and it is just amazing!
I'd rather you think of demons as monsters. Like a chimera, or a blood bear. They took on the figure of humanity (humans, elves, dwarves, etc.) to make them less of a target because of "evolution". They also took on the trait to "imitate" speech as the show says, to decive, not communicate. Like how a Mimic takes a form of a treasure chest to be less of a target and to imitate to decive. Demons in this world is not something Humanity will accept a thousand or two thousand years into the future like in our world. They are not a misunderstood race that we can be friends with after sometime. They eat humanity. Their evolution is something more tailored to hunting humanity, not be friends with. They may seem sentient, you can have a conversation. But their sentience is nothing more than grouping up, having a leader, and working together to kill and eat humanity. Reminds you of something? Like a pack of wolves to survive. Pity not the monsters, but their victims.
Looking forward to your reaction to Episode 10. All your theory crafting questions will be answered. Also the "seven sages" who worked under the Demon King were his top leaders, and the most powerful demons after the Demon King himself. That being said, demons are essentially all loners who only band together to hunt humans when directed to do so by a more powerful demon than them.
One of the most important concept in this anime is what our IRL science calls "Convergent Evolution". Demons and Humans/Elves may be the same in almost everything but Demons come from different ancestor. Like birds, bats and butterflies - All have evolved to have wings but they dont have the same ancestors with wings. I put humans and elves together because in this anime it seems like they are the same when characters mentions "humanity". Frieren Author winning again 😎
What a casual big ask, "What about a thousand?" And Himmels reason for wanting to have statues, madeto do what little he could as a mortal to still be there for Frieren, he is the perfect person.
Actually, right now they are not animals, they are sapient creatures, that's the difference. But it would be wrong to call them psychopaths either, they are another specie, so human rules don't apply to them. It seems humans were their favorite food prior the very beginning of demons civilization, and now humans are their geopolitical enemies. Also, demons have their own traditions and language, so they don't speak the same language as humans, as the results - miscommunication. Actually, the demon child tried really hard to accommodate, really sad that it didn't end well, in different circumstances it could work.
It's even more like a fairy tale if you translate the names from German... Cold and Distant had to make a new friend, Strong, to defeat the dragon, and continue their journey the talk with Heaven.
After that afterthought discussion you are in for a ride in the next couple episodes. Sorry to see this comment section is the worst for Frieren reaction I come across lately so much spoiling going on. Truly repulsive.
Demons are not like elves or dwarfs that consider to be part of humanity. Demons, just like what Frieren says, are kind of monsters that capable of speech. You will know the difference when they die.

Something interesting is that when Frieren talks about Himmel she looks at the sky and it's interesting because the name Himmel means "sky" 9:45
need more episodes now please i love how you guys analyse shows
Cant wait to see you guys react to 'throne elf' when they appear in the show.
The regret in Himmels "No" is stinging
このエピソードは哲学です。
お母さんと言えばみんな優しくしてくれる。
そんなセリフを子どもから聞きたくなかったが、これが世の中の真実です。
This reaction was a lot of fun, excited to see you move through this arc. It's an awesome ride
Eu simplesmente amo a conversa que eles tem no final do ep, sempre veem os pequenos detalhes dentro da historia. Parabéns pra vocês!
Draht means literally "wire" in German. Quite fitting for his fighting style using magical wire.
Luegner come up with the idea to use "father" while watching the family history depicted in Granat' pictures and paintings
the names of the characters comes from german. lugner means liar, himmel means blue sky, eisen means iron, .... etc... and throne elf is (ı dont want to give you spoiler :D )
ı can say 10th episode is the best episode for me. you will understand when you see:D
love you guys.
justice for throne elf 😂
Malice!! He said it!!!
In Frieren's world there are human, elves, dwarves and monsters....demons are just a kind of monster
can't wait for the next ep...
keep in mind... Qual a Sage of Corruption, Aura Sage od Destruction... easily getting confused of this but yes, there is a difference :D
Smartypants... this IS a massive spoiler in itself if that was true... but maybe you should go re-read... because up to chapter 130... no Qual is NOT
@@Odysee89 I have read up to Ch 130. And no spoiler given. I think too many people don't understand what spoilers are.
@@MichaelRBrown-lh6kn well, stating, that qual would be one of the sages of destruction, would be a spoiler for anime only watchers, therefore, if it was true, it would be a spoiler
@@Odysee89 NO.
What would be a spoiler is if I started talking about the other sages.
Which I didn't.
Learn what a spoiler is.
You guys have the best anime reactions I've seen so far. Keep it up ❤
The big thing to remember (21:50) he is not "THE HERO" yet, as they move from village to town to city nobody has heard of him or THEM yet.
Love yalls reaction, yall are so adorable
in a few episodes most of it will be explained, but until then without spoiling anything:
what if Frieren's opinion if not based on a trauma, but simply the truth and an objective description of demons.
Well put
love u guys reaction💙💙
Lugner means Liar in German
just for information because german writing is a pain in other languags:
the Ü Ä Ö letters, for example in Lügner, can correctly be written by useing the standard letter a o u and an e afterwards.
so Lügner will correctly be Luegner or Übel will be Uebel.
Most of the times translators work with just a o u but sometimes they wont correctly translate words
謝謝!
Thank you so much for supporting us :) !!
It says a lot how deceitful demons are that Lügner's name in German means liar....
Your comments on the elf on the throne are very amusing 😂
Lugner, literally translates to "Liar" in german.
Linie is Line in german and Draht is Wire in german.
Additionally, Qual is a very darkly associated word in german, meaning something akin to torture or great suffering. Most of the names in this world seems to have a specific meaning which matches as they are translated in german.
Noticing a bit of a pattern here?
Himmels relationship with flowers is really "something".
There are a lot of great parallels and contrasts between Frieren and Demons.
fun fact : himmel is a german word that can be translated as heaven. so frieren said he go to heaven can also be mean he go to himmel
fun fact 2 : all the demon that was defeated but failed to get killed because they're running away is hiding themselves and only go on rampage after himmel die, that's how scary strong he is
Thank you for sharing 😊
It shows how great the writing in this show, the demons also deceive you in his few words. 😅
You are gonna love the next couple episodes
"No malice" is an interesting observation. It's good to keep that in mind. Will it be confirmed or subverted?
29:50 this is not a spoiling spoiler i believe and you would benefit from this so i will comment this: yes we will find a more nuanced demon like you said but not this season, maybe on 2nd or 3rd season and it is the best arc imo. We will met One of the most well written character in the series as a demon and it is just amazing!
Great reaction/discussion.
The comment section is a bit too eager to let everyone know it knows things, though.
Ahora que veo esta video reacción mmm Himmel y Frieren lo habrán hecho pero lo dejaron pasar?
in case you're looking for it like i was, the ost when Fern talks very rudely to Stark is called, "Too Many Grimoires." 😌🥰
The concept of demon hasn't fully sink into him (☞゚ヮ゚)☞.
Frieren Author winning again 😎
... Mother again...
human mother, elven mother... ...😢
... just words for ....monsters ?!
Good reactions
9:50 Himmel means heaven in Germany.
DO YOU HAVE A PATREON??? TAKE MY MONEY!!!
please drop more of frieren episode...i'm begging youuuuuu
PLEASE WATCH 8, 9, 10 TOGETHER OR AT LEAST 8 AN 9!!!!!
waiting for more episodes
Ya'll're gonna flip over the next couple episodes.
Just keep in mind that episodes 8-10 aren't even the peak of Frieren. :)
please don't spoil. And yes, pointing out episodes is a type of spoiler
FLAM-MEH
What a casual big ask, "What about a thousand?" And Himmels reason for wanting to have statues, madeto do what little he could as a mortal to still be there for Frieren, he is the perfect person.
Demons are not psychopaths, they're just animals, they're not evil
They are more like viruses than like animals. Since they don’t belong in the food chain. Nothing feeds on demons, they just vanish.
@@alarichrul6639 and what are sapient creatures? Yeah, animals, checkmate atheists
from the humans pov
theyre definitly evil
check the german names of them^^
It's even more like a fairy tale if you translate the names from German...
Lugner is liar in a germany
Demons are not like elves or dwarfs that consider to be part of humanity. Demons, just like what Frieren says, are kind of monsters that capable of speech. You will know the difference when they die.
