Your glee at seeing Anthony Stewart Head is delightful! Old time Doctor Who fans (like me) had a similar reaction to seeing the return of the lovely Elizabeth Sladen as Sarah Jane in this episode. If you do delve into Classic Who you should definitely check out some of Sarah's stories. Her episodes are part of one of the strongest runs of episodes in the entire series.
Thanks! It was amazing to see him in this ep. I'm really looking forward to seeing more of her in the spinoff and definitely some of the Classic Who episodes. Yay! :-)
@@Rudromukherjeenerv BBC iPlayer subtitles it as "man in the van", not "man in Havana". It may be a reference, but that is not the line as "officially" subtitled.
Sarah Jane is generally regarded as one of the best and most loved companions of the classic Doctor Who era. Smart and independent from the start (she wasi an investigative journalist in 1971 when there weren't that many female journalists around, and so was a great role model), she was always ready to challenge the Doctor and set him straight where needed, She had great chemistry with both the 3rd and 4th Doctors, and seamlessly picks that up again with the 10th, Seeing Elisabeth Sladen reprise her role (along with K9!) more than 30 years after leaving it was pure joy for old timers like me (and it must be said she looks just as gorgeous as she did back in the 1970s), The spin off Sarah Jane Adventures she starred in, while aimed at a younger audience, is great and well worth watching. Lis Sladen leads a great ensemble cast of young actors who put in stwllar performances. The show builds each season in quality and has real heart and great stories. Lis Sladen's death from cancer midway through season 5 in 2011 was such a tragedy, and she will be sadly missed, but warmly loved, by generations of kids and all Doctor Who fans.
That's a beautiful legacy to have! I'm looking forward to seeing more of her, and think it's great that she got to appear in the show in all its different eras. :-)
Sorry to be a wee bit nitpicky, but SJS joined in 1974 during Pertwee's final season. 1971 was Jo Grant (Katy Manning) and the villain was the Master played by the late Roger Delgado.
*Potential Spoilers for Classical Doctor Who* I mean, there have been others. Sara Kingdom (if you class her as one), Katarina, Tegan, Peri, Kamelion. Leela and Romana are probably dead too because they were on Gallifrey.
A great episode. Seeing Sarah Jane again was so brilliant, but it also created an interesting dynamic between her, the Doctor and Rose. Contrary to most people, I like all the Rose and Sarah Jane bickering, primarily because of where it ends up with both characters coming to an understanding and having mutual respect for one another. Many people criticise Rose's character in this episode and oversimplify her behavior and call her all sorts of names that I don't care to repeat. I think you were right that a lot of Rose and Sarah Jane's jealousy is due to them feeling like their experiences with the Doctor aren't unique to them and feeling threatened by another women's presence, But I think there's another dimension to Rose's jealousy that many people don't seem to get. Rose felt insecure, when she found out that Sarah and the Doctor were once as close as she and the Doctor are now and had all of these amazing adventures, yet despite all of that he just dropped her off and moved on and hardly ever mentions her now. Rose fears that's her future because if the Doctor can do that to Sarah, what's stopping him from doing the same to her? The Doctor's justifications about why he leaves his companions make sense, but are also really sad and highlight how tragic the Doctor's existence really is. He promises he won't ever leave Rose, but deep down he knows the day will come, when she's no longer by his side. A really interesting story that I never get tired off.
Well said. I agree completely, too many people just look at Rose and analyse her character shallowly. I've always loved her character not only because she's very relatable and realistic but also because despite being just a "working class shop girl" to most viewers, she's still clever with potential for greatness, which the Doctor clearly saw otherwise he wouldn't have asked her along. I loved her the most in season one because it showed early on what a deep thinker she was, for example, her comment about the Doctor seeing days that are dead and gone, as well as her sadness over everyone missing the earth's destruction. She's a well fleshed out character, and still to this day she is one of my most favourite characters from any tv show, movie or book.
I think you're right about Rose's behavior being motivated by insecurity as much as the jealousy. Great observation! Yes, this episode brings up so many facets of how the Doctor experiences life and sharing it with other people. Thank you for sharing those thoughts! :-)
@@asif6803 I wasn't being condescending. I was simply stating a fact that a lot of people hate on Rose in this episode and many even point to this specific episode as to why they don't like Rose. I agree that my points are obvious within the episode, which is why it frustrates me that so many people still seem to miss them somehow. Fair enough if you grasped the themes of the episodes too, but there's no need to accuse me of being condescending and acting like my commentary is profound. This must surely be one of the strangest interactions I've had on this site for a while....
For Sarah Jane's encounter with Mummies, watch 'Pyramids of Mars (1976), for the Loch Ness Monster, see 'Terror of the Zygons' (1975). Also highly recommend 'Genesis of the Daleks (1975), which is effectively the opening shot of the Time War.
Hear hear. Moreover - don't make us wait too long! There are currently so few Fourth Doctor/Sarah Jane reactions out there. :( A good place to do a classic reaction would be between series 2&3,imo.
Elisabeth Sladen first story was The Time Warrior with Jon Pertwee and stayed with Tom Baker from his first story as the fourth doctor Robot to her last The Hand of Fear. You also get a one off episode in the early 80s Story where Sarah Jane meets K9 its called A Girls best friend and then her last appearance was in the 20th Anniversary story The Five Doctors until Russell T Davis brought her back first in School Reunion and then her own show The Sarah Jane Adventures so she is an important character that both Russell and David were fans of when watching her onscreen as they grew up.
That must have been a wild experience for them, filming that episode. That's fantastic that they were able to bring her back and incorporate her in the story! I'm really looking forward to seeing more of her! :-)
"Physics! Physics! Physics! Physics! Physics! Physics! Physics! ....I hope you're getting all this down!" Because the Tardis translation circuit only translates words that people would know. And it'll replace unknow words with the most common word that people would know....so The Doctor has just told the kids a load of future science tech speak, and no one knows what he said.
12:04 Trivia: The 1970s production team referred to K9's ears as his "crisps", because they reminded them of potato crisps (or "chips" in the USA). Thanks for your lovely reaction to a lovely story :)
"You know what the most difficult thing was? Coping with what happens next. No, with what doesn’t happen next. You took me to the furthest reaches of the galaxy, you showed me supernovas, intergalactic battles and then you just dropped me back on Earth. How could anything compare to that?"
I'm loving your reactions! I don't know if anyone mentioned this in the comments but when "Sarah" & "Rose" are laughing their heads off (around 8:02 on the video), the makeup dept had drawn a funny mustache on David & he stood off camera, that's what "Rose" points to at one point.
Ahhhh I LOVED your reaction to seeing Anthony Head! I remember getting really excited too - he is SO wonderful in everything he does. 😊 I freaked out a bit when I realized he was one of the characters on 'Ted Lasso' & he's perfectly cast in that role too. Love love love him. 😍
Great reaction. This episode is a real love letter to Classic Who fans. You've now met, without doubt, the greatest companion of Doctor Who Classic & New - the marvelous Sarah-Jane Smith (played by the brilliant & late lamented Elisabeth Sladen)...and for a bonus you get another fantastic Classic era companion K-9 (voiced by the amazing John Leeson)...and you get the return of Mickey Smith...plus Anthony Stuart Head - so much brilliance in one episode. I love the joy in the Doctor's reaction when Sarah-Jane realises who he is (pretty sure that's Classic Who fan David Tennant fanboying over Liz Sladen - just like all of us classic fans when we first saw it!). Sarah Jane was a companion of the 3rd & 4th Doctor - she is in many outright classic Doctor Who stories - I personally would recommend watching what is the greatest of Doctor Who stories "Pyramids of Mars" (my personal favourite Who story ever). School Reunion a tremendous episode, witty, clever, nostalgic and emotional - I've said it before but it's some of the best of Who wrapped in one delicious morsel.
You're right, it was such a great episode! I love how David Tennant very convincingly played that he had a deep history with Sarah Jane, even though this was really his first time working with her. I'm really looking forward to seeing more of her (so sad to hear that she passed away!) :-(
OK so K-9 had a whole run, not just a story. Sarah Jane was the longest running female companion, yet at the time they didnt overlap, they fudged that at one point, but that's a long story. If you like Anthony Head, have you seen Jonathon Creek - The Wrestlers Tomb? Its the first episode of a UK show he was supposed to be in regularly, but got the job on Buffy right after, so he couldn't return. Its a really fun show.
Last season with Jon Pertwee and first two seasons with Tom Baker had Sarah Jane Smith as companion, back in the seventies. Two of the best classic doctor who stories (Genesis of the Daleks and Pyramids of Mars) had her in them. K9 was a bit later, in the late seventies, in some of the later Tom Baker seasons.
This is one of my very favorite episodes, largely due to the presence of Sarah Jane Smith, aka one of the most awesome companions ever. :) The goodbye gets me every time, especially since Elisabeth Sladen passed away in 2011. Fortunately, this was not her final appearance in the Whoniverse; if you get the chance, I highly recommend The Sarah Jane Adventures. As for Mickey, my opinion is that Rose doesn't deserve him. At the very least, she doesn't appreciate him as much as he deserves.
I agree, I don't think Rose fully appreciates Mickey, and hasn't earned the degree of loyalty that he gives her! He's a prince. I will most certainly check out the Sarah Jane Adventures! :-)
One of my favourite episodes. Sarah Jane is one of my all time favourite companions and characters. This was my first introduction to her and I grew to love her even more when her adventure continued in The Sarah Jane Adventures which was a great show. I absolutely loved it. I eventually saw some of her episodes in Classic Who. Still have more to watch which I haven’t seen yet but I’m saving them for later. I’m glad you enjoyed this. David Tennant was completely fanboying when meeting Elisabeth Sladen. The reaction when he first sees Sarah Jane is sublime. Love how Sarah Jane and Rose went from having a rivalry to eventually bonding over The Doctor, the relationship between the characters, Mickey had some great lines and banter too. Sarah Jane getting a proper goodbye with The Doctor is emotional too especially now that Elisabeth Sladen is sadly no longer with us. When she says “Everything has its time and everything ends.” Man that has so much meaning🙏🏾 Your reaction to seeing Anthony Head was great. I really need to watch Buffy someday. I saw odd glimpses of it years back but I never got the chance to properly see it. I’ve held off it for way too long now.
"The Time Warrior", in which Sarah Jane Smith made her first appearance, is notable for the introduction of the Sontarans. Also for one of several Dr Who/Star Wars links, with Jeremy Bulloch (Boba Fett in Star Wars) appearing in the story as a medieval archer.
@@FourthWallReactions Oh yes! But he's got a surprising range and no inhibitions when it comes to stage work (some Little Britain Life scenes are quite dirty). He'd also make a great Doctor! I think ASH auditioned for the role of the 8th Doctor in the TV movie of 1996. Paul McGann beat him to that part so he had to make do with playing some stuffy librarian in a teenage horror show.
What a fabulous reaction to a wonderful episode ... so many smiles with this story. After all my issues with season 1, this episode just nails the connection between Classic Who and New Who. As someone who started watching Who in the 70s when Sarah Jane was with the third Doctor, this episode is such a treat and represents the start of my love of New Who.
Thanks! :-) That must have been so great to see Sarah Jane on the new show - what a fantastic link between the classic and the current! I'm looking forward to seeing more of her.
Watching the Doctor meet SJS for the first time since the 70's show when I was a kid was so lovely. Brought back so many memories of watching it on a Saturday evening with first Jon Pertwee, then Tom Baker. A pure nostalgia blast!. RIP Elizabeth Sladen, you were our Sarah Jane!. BTW, can't wait for you to get to the 50th anniversary show...loads of nostalgia in that one!.
"Where are you from, the dark ages?" Sarah Jane's first adventure with the Doctor took place in the dark ages, and she said something very similar to an un-liberated woman of that time.
Haha. I like that you paused and had your freakout. :) Your Giles reaction was my Sarah Jane reaction. Sarah Jane was my first companion. To me the Fourth Doctor & Sarah are the definitive Doctor Who TARDIS Team. Although David and ..... another companion... probably have my favorite season... Aw, Lis and David still make me cry in those scenes together.
Heehee, I knew I couldn't concentrate without getting it out of my system first - lol! I thought The Doctor and Sarah Jane had a great chemistry, and Tennant was very convincing as having had a connection with her, even though it was a different actor before. Very emotional, and a great story!
He wrote the foreword for her autobiography and recorded it. You can just feel the wonderment. (Careful, if you choose to watch. There are some spoilers after 5:00. He mentions some things about his future companions on the series) : ua-cam.com/video/RUNDkw3KBVM/v-deo.html
"We're only like 10 minutes in and I'm very happy!" Sums up this brilliant episode very well for me!😂 Also, gosh I LOVE your fangirl squeeeeee when Anthony Stewart Head appears!😍 Always fun to see someone be passionate about Buffy! P.S.: Little heads up: (to get the references) _You wanna see_ especially the following Classic Who serials: Invasion of the Dinosaurs, Robot, Genesis of the Daleks, Terror of the Zygons, Pyramids of Mars & The Hand of Fear!
LOL - I really lost it when ASH strolled onto the screen! 😱 He is wonderful. I will add those Classic Who episodes to the list - can't wait to watch a few!
your squeal of utter delight when Anthony Head popped up was just brilliant. would have loved to hear you talk more about Buffy. It is one of my favorite shows as well
Thanks, and hello fellow Buffy fan! :-) I was trying so hard to keep my comments Who-centered; I was a little afraid if I started making Buffy comments, I'd never stop. LOL
I've been watching quite a few of your reactions now, and I love them! You have an impressive level of relevant pop-culture knowledge, a great eye for detail and a true appreciation for quality, which is rare. Anthony Stewart Head and David Tennant are my two favorite actors (and Doctor Who and Buffy are my two favorite shows), so this episode and video were a must-see - not to mention, your reaction in the beginning is VERY relatable. :)
Wow, thank you so much! :-) :-) You have great taste in shows! ;-) It's so much fun when you get your favorite actors in one show together - that scene between the two of them by the pool? So good! I'm loving all the DW/BTVS connections. Thanks so much for watching with me!
I heart Mickey so much. I echoed your Tony Head squee when I saw him (Noel Clarke) as the father at the beginning of Star Trek Into Darkness. Mickey was always one of my favorite characters and I was so glad he got a recurring role.
Youve got a lot to watch.. Sarah Jane Smith first met the Doctor (The third Doctor, Jon Pertwee) in "The time Warrior". She traveled with him then the Fourth Doctor (Tom Baker) until she left at the end of "The Hand Of Fear." K9 (mk1) was introduced later on in "The Invisible Enemy" but later decided to remain on gallifrey with Leela in "The Invasion of Time". K9 (mk2) was introduced in "The Ribos Operation" and travelled with the Doctor and his Time Lady assistant Romana until "Warrior's Gate". K9 (mk3) was a gift to Sarah Jane and was introduced in the pilot for a spinoff called "K9 and Company"...
Sarah Jane first appeared in Classic Who in a Third Doctor (Jon Pertwee) Episode called, 'The Time Warrior'. She remained right through the Third and well into the Fourth Doctor (Tom Baker) You would really like her.
Like many others, Sarah Jane with Three and Four were a big part of my childhood. So this was such a delight when it aired. Liz Sladen is fantastic, both here and in the old episodes.
Oh thank you so much! Yay, another Buffy fan! Solidarity :-) This was a great episode - I know I'm still just at the beginning of series 2 but I think it'll stay up there among the favorites, for sure.
Sarah Jane premiered in 1973 with the 3rd Doctor and left in 1976 with the 4th. Then returned again in classic who. K-9 premiered in 1978. Sarah and k-9 got together in 1981.
It was so wonderful that they could bring back Elizabeth Sladen as Sarah Jane. Having the same actor playing the same role decades later really gave a great continuity between the classic and new Who episodes. This is one of my favorites.
Agreed, that was a nice touch, and even though I haven't seen Classic Who, I think having seen her here will make watching her in Classic Who even more special. :-)
This is a good story, and interesting the way it looks back at classic Who and the way the style of the show has changed. The show used to be more just adventure-focused with less on the relationship between the main charcters, and companions (or assistants, as they really were referred to then) really did come and go in a much more casual manner than they do now. So it's fun that the writer took that and addressed it, in show as it were. I think David Tenant really was a bit of a fanboy with Elizabeth Sladen (Sarah Jane) and evidently loved working with her on this. Finally, I believe show runner Russell T Davies was influenced by Buffy in the way he approached Doctor Who, obviously in the character of Rose and in the way the show combines social and emotional issues with genre stories. And certainly there were lots of comparisons to Buffy, positive and negative, when series 1 was shown. So, yes, Anthony Head is a great guest star.
I agree, I think you can tell that David Tennant really enjoyed his scenes with her! I'm very interested to see some classic Who and be able to make some comparisons between then and now (or, a more recent 'then') I'm loving the Buffy connections. I can see some of the influences, particularly in the mix of humor with emotion. Great stuff!
1:42 So someone actually make a theory (or a joke) about this Where the Doctor said the word "Physics" in many different ways, since he's a gallifreyan. He maybe has different kind of words for the same meaning. But our human mind can't coop what the other terms is, so we can just understand the word "Physics" Oh my... the next episode. Can't wait!
That's a good theory. A bit like the sequence Steven Moffat wrote in _Coupling_. When Sally is remembering, the girls are admiring the spread at a buffet: "satay", "vol-au-vents", "quail's eggs", "smoked salmon", "crudités". When Patrick is remembering, he hears them all as "sausages", "sausages". (And on the flipside: Patrick remembers saying "BMW M3, midnight blue. Nought to 60 in 5 seconds, on to 100 in another 6. Sequential semi-automatic gearbox, traction control, and black leather seats."; Sally remembers hearing "Car."
Great reaction! Looking forward now to the next episode which is generally regarded as a modern day classic. So refreshing to see some great thoughts and new insights into the show - thank you!
Buffy the Vampire slayer was a HUGE nspiration for the format for this show in the first few seasons (: Russel T. Davies (headwriter who brought the show back and at the time your watching) love Buffy and found it revolutionary. Russel was ecstatic to have Anthony on the show lol. Rose & Mickey were definitely both feeling like second bananas & insecure in this episode. Rose realizes that the Doctor leaves people he loves behind, and Mickey realizes how under appreciated he is. Sarah Jane Smith is amazing. After this she got her own spin off show, and before that was a companion to the 3rd & 4th Doctor. Elizabeth Sladen was such a treasure but unfortunately lost her battle to cancer a few years ago. She was known as the quintessential Doctor Who girl (:
Oh, that's a shame about Elizabeth Sladen. It sounds like she had quite a legacy with Doctor Who - that's a great career to have. I love that there's such a deep Buffy connection to this show ;-)
Sarah Jane Smith (played by Elisabeth Sladen) is one of the most famous and beloved companions from the Classic Series. Sarah Jane was a companion to the Third and Fourth Doctors in the 1970s. K9 was a long time companion to the Fourth Doctor as well. When it came time to introduce a classic character to the new series, Sarah Jane was by a *wide* margin the obvious choice.
That's awesome that they brought her back. It seemed like a perfect time, too; series 1 might have been too early, but it seems just right, here. I'm looking forward to seeing more of Sarah Jane! :-)
Already on season 2 lol Im binging your reactions and watching with you! Your little edits you make throughout the videos must take time, (ie when you went back and looked for bad wolf mentions etc) and add an extra level to the videos :) Also all your little inputs from other shows, ie recognising the actors or references ie 'tiny balrogs' lol, love them!
FWIW, Season 12 -- Tom Baker's first -- was recently released on Blu-Ray. That's technically Lis Sladen's second season on the show, but it's Tom Baker's first, and its their relationship that people usually think of. One of the stories in this season is famous and frequently-enough repeated that it's one of the few specific story beats in the classic series that serves as direct backstory to some elements of the current show. Which isn't to say it's the best story ever, but it's one of those things where if you've ever seen just one classic Who story, odds are it's probably this one. This, or the Five Doctors.
I really enjoyed this reaction and your commentary at the end. That guy you like..Anthony..someone, he did a great job. I like his demeanor with that deep evily voice. I enjoy bad guys who have a head on their shoulders. I don't know, sometimes when watching this show you think you've got the Doctor's number on how he's going to react. He'll throw you some curve balls! For example, up to this point him and Rose have been like peas and carrots. Suddenly he's now giving her the cold shoulder without much of an explanation. The more friends that surround him the more detatched he starts to become. IMO he'll focus more on whatever threat/problem/puzzle is happening at the time. Also IMO, I think Sarah Jane's appearance sparked an epiphany in him. He's like 900 years old and Rose is 19 lmao. This isn't his first rodeo and the two are getting too close to each other. That's why he invited Mickey along with enthusiasm and that's why Rose is getting pissed off. They're not having their little personal "moments" together anymore and he's acting like she's barely there. If you react to classic who, that'll be pretty epic! At least cover some of the 4th's era and take it from there maybe. He's everyone's favorite. Man, when K-9 showed up in this episode you don't know how fan boy that brings us old schoolers back to. . . My older sister watched Dr Who in the early 80's. I was only 10. That show was something I could enjoy with my sister because I was old enough to enjoy the sci fi part but too young to really understand it. It was at the height of the 4th doctors term and she took me to Philly for a Dr. Who Convention. People had K9's that they actually built with R/C remotes and voice boxes. Everyone dressed up like the Doctor's old and current....ladies dressed up like the companions. There were stalls with so much Dr. Who merch that you couldn't find anywhere and Cannon that you've never heard of before. K9 was such a huge Dr Who staple of that time. Even having the same voice after all of these years! was very nastolgic.
That convention sounds like such a cool experience! Those are great observations about the Doctor. I'm really so glad that Mickey will be with them from now on and am excited to see how their dynamic is affected. I like what you said about the Doctor having had an epiphany - I can't wait to see where all this goes! I'm glad you enjoyed Anthony Stewart Head, too - he is a great actor! :-)
Interesting tidbit: when Buffy ended the BBC actually began talks with Joss Whedon and Anthony Head about producing a Giles spinoff, called 'Ripper'. They even got as far as a treatment and, I believe, a pilot script but licencing issues killed the project early on. A BBC Buffy spinoff. Could've been cool.
When it was announced in 2011 that Lis Sladen had suddenly died of cancer halfway through filming series 5 Of The Sarah Jane Adventures I was devastated. The Doctor Needed Sarah Jane!
The guy you like played uther pendragon, king Arthur's dad in the BBC series Merlin that started around the time of this series of dr who (in an attempt to replicate the popularity of the return of dr who to UK sat night tv)
The Sarah Jane Adventures starts from here it's about her adventures after she stops waiting for the doctor and finds her own life as she says to him at the end.
You better get used to seeing well known British actors in this show :) Only 9 seasons to go (about 80 episodes) and your all caught up :) Love your reaction
@@FourthWallReactions It was planned before this episode, rumors and all that, she is fan favorite like jack, may she RIP. Doctor who has 3 spinoffs: Torchwood (it's for adults), Sarah Jane adventures (Children but nonetheless brilliant), and Class (It's like teen wolf, only more doctor who... you must wait for this one until season 9). Each one is delicious piece of entertainment. But Torchwood is everyone's favorite. Mainly cuz of masterpiece of a season 3 (It is very powerful).
Sarah Jane is practically the only other companion that the Doctor was probably in love with. What did you think of Rose’s attitude to Sarah Jane? I thought she was a total cow and this episode brought her down to earth making her realise she’s not as special as she thinks she is.
I think Rose was quite rattled by Sarah Jane & let jealousy get the better of her. They were both a little catty to each other! Rose earned an eyeroll from me, for sure. ;-)
The episodes that had Sarah Jane in it wer in the classic Who era. Sarah Jane was on when Tom Baker, Doctor number 4, was on; and the episodes were only half an hour long. I really hope you are able to find it. I hope that helps a bit. :-)
Since you love Giles from Buffy so much, you might like the series, Merlin starring Colin Morgan as Merlin and Bradley James as King Arthur. It's another fantastic show I love and this actor who plays Giles is in it as Uther Pendragon, Arthur's father. He's one of the main characters. You should check it out. :)
@@FourthWallReactions Awesome! It's a really good show. I think you would really love it. I love the legends of King Arthur and Merlin, as well as Morgan Le Fay and this show only added to how much I loved them.
Giles going all Ripper in this episode....great reaction and loving your channel. Edit...i have to ask Bangel or Spuffy?.....to me there's Bangel and the wrong answer
Thanks so much! Ripper - how I miss him! I wish they had been able to go ahead with a Ripper spin-off...that would have been awesome. I have to say, Bangel. ;-) I'm with you!
I love the loch Ness monster one, it's in the first season of Tom baker who (One of the best seasons) the monster itself was a special effect of its time (not brilliant) but it had a great cast and story and introduced a great villans the zygons that you will see when you get to the dr who 50th anniversary special...
Sarah Jane is still one of my favourite companions of all time (Romana, and some future Nu Who are up there too) Feel so emotional watching it to this day (even though, I finished season 7 before watching Classic Who)
That's so great that they brought her back! I'm looking forward to watching her spinoff, and checking out some of her adventures in some Classic Who eps. :-)
When I first started watching Buffy, I recognized him from those coffee commercials. Heehee! I'd heard he was in Merlin, but I don't know about Little Britain. Anthony Head being in any show is enough for me to check it out, though. ;-)
I think this was the first of the Nu Who episodes that cemented the fact that this was a continuation of the Classic Series; before that it was open to interpretation, and I've always suspected that RTD wanted to keep his options open with Season 1 as to if it was a hard or soft reboot.
Christopher Eccleston was always the 9th Doctor, never the 1st. Not making too many direct references back to classic Who is just about making the new series more accessible IMO.
@@FourthWallReactions I think the idea was to get viewers interested, and then (if it succeded) to reintroduce Classic Who elements from Series 2 onward. (The assumption being that new fans would check out the Classic series anyway). Another reason was that it was felt that the Classic era had become too convoluted in terms of Gallifrey and all its politics; hence the concept of the Time War,which effectively created a blank slate and made everything much more accessible for new fans (or returning fans like me, who'd got a bit rusty!) Anyway (without giving spoilers) from this point on,expect more returning 'Classic things' on a regular basis. :)
Sarah Jane Smith is the best Companion IMO, She's in "Genesis of the Daleks" so you can get a feel for her if you watch that series of Classic Episodes. Smart Savvy Feminist, yeah she great. The Doctor does leave some companions but it's better than he alternative... Death by Alien. If your contract is up though, it's up, most people leave the show itself of their own volition though and have to get off the show somehow.
I'm looking forward to seeing more of Sarah Jane! Haha, yes, good point, at some point they do leave the show and if those are your choices...I'd prefer to be dumped by a Doctor than killed by an alien. LOL
Now I understand why you didn't include any Whedon shows in your poll. You probably saw them all already. I am also a Buffy fan, well anything Joss Whedon has made for TV,with Firefly/ Serenity being my favourite.
Yup, that's exactly it! I think the only things I missed were most of Dollhouse (I made it through half of the first season and kind of fell away from it) and Agents of Shield, which is on the poll. It's a shame there wasn't more Firefly - so much potential! :-(
@@FourthWallReactions I know this is an older comment, but I just stumbled across your channel today and have been bingeing these Doctor Who reactions. I just wanted to chime in and say that even if you don't react to it, you should go back and give Dollhouse a second chance. I think it was a show ahead of its time and in some ways is even more relevant today than it was then. I'll also say that a lot of people bailed around or before the middle of season 1. Because of that, Fox execs kind of gave up and stopped meddling and trying to make the show "work" and left Joss to his own devices. Not so coincidentally, that's when the show really began to take off and become an even better show. The first 5 episodes in particular (from what info we "outsiders' are privy to) are the ones that cater most heavily to the direction the network wanted the show to go in. (Though because it's a Joss Whedon show, all 5 do a s*** ton of world building and character development before he then hits you with the "real" stuff later!) Their input becomes somewhat less after that. Season 2 is all Joss. I recently went back to do a re-watch (it's been about 6 years since I've re-watched) and I was reminded about just how under--appreciated this show is. I understand not every show is to everyone's taste, but given the way you've reacted to this show and the shows and things you're a fan of outside of this show (going by either you "getting" references to them or by stating outright that you're a fan) I really do think Dollhouse is right up your alley. Unrelated, but may I also suggest you watch (whether you react or not) Dirk Gently's Holistic Detective Agency, American Gods (well, pretty much anything by Bryan Fuller, really) Chuck, Psych and Good Omens. I think you may enjoy them.
Hi, thanks for this comment! I'm sorry to get back to it so late - YT can be weird with notifications so sometimes I only see things when I scroll... I just might give "Dollhouse" another shot at some point. I've had a couple of people encourage me to hang in there through S1 in order to get to S2, which they say is great. I've heard that "Psych" is good, too. Oh, I loved "Chuck"! So hilarious! And I really enjoyed "American Gods" last season; I know S2 is on now but I missed the premiere so I'm waiting to binge. And I'm really looking forward to "Good Omens" - the cast looks amazing. You have good taste in shows. ;-) Thanks!
Very reminiscent of Sesskasays’ reaction to this episode. She also reacted loudly to the appearance of ASH & was also overjoyed at Mickey joining them onboard.
You should watch Merlin at some point got a lot of well known actors in that show also love your videos bin bin watching your Dr who ones the past couple days haha
So I’ve never seen Buffy nor do I know anything about it and by your reaction... I take it you would recommend it?😆 You’re watching my favorite show and I may end up watching yours!
Ah, well, I'll always recommend Buffy! ;-) It's not for everyone, but since you love Doctor Who I would say you're more likely to enjoy it than not. When I first started Doctor Who, I had a lot of people tell me to 'hang in there' past the 1st series, and I would echo that about Buffy - the first season they barely had a budget & the production values were clunky, but the writing and the characters were fantastic and you could tell that it would become Something. Definitely check it out! :-)
I would love to see you react to Outlander. It sucks you in just Doctor Who. Also Diana (the writer) thought up the story after watching the Classic Doctor Who episodes with Jamie McCrimmon.
Ooo, Outlander - so beautiful! I was following one reaction channel for that show but they had a lot of copyright issues :-( But yes, Outlander's a lovely show!
@@FourthWallReactions Bummer I guess that is why there are so few reaction channels for it. GrumpyOpinions is the one I have been watching but was hoping for a less grumpy opinion :P
Can I ask what you are watching this on? Because I do know there are some differences from the show as it aired on Netflix and through Amazon prime video though I won't go into them for spoiler reasons
Sure! I'm watching on Amazon Prime. I didn't know it had been on Netflix - I wish it still was because I like Netflix better. But I'm just glad that it's readily available, regardless of platform. I'm curious to know what the differences are, but at the same time I don't want to be spoiled... ;-)
@@FourthWallReactions I heard another Reactor state that he was annoyed with Amazon Prime's episode listing, because some stories are marked "Part One","Part Two" etc;which spoils the fact that there are cliffhanger endings.
@@FourthWallReactions Ok then, good to know. I won't say what the differences in content are, but I will give the warning that Amazon seems to have cut some stuff from some of the episodes. They are only small cuts, trimming a minute or two off thankfully but I do know one of the episodes which has a cut of a sadly good scene. Netflix seems to have done the same sadly :(
They're really inconsistent about that - I knew that 1x04 and 1x05 was a two-parter, but not 1x09 and 1x10. This series (2), they counted the Christmas special as the "first" episode and now every ep is numbered incorrectly. It's weird!
That's disappointing to hear! I don't like when things get chopped up on other platforms. I could get the DVDs from the library, but I'm afraid of having eps spoiled by the packaging and the menus. Can't seem to win!
It's been a year since you made this video but I don't see any evidence that you've watched any classic who. This is one of my favorite episodes but I've seen "Time Warrior", "Giant Robot", "The Hand of Fear" and "The Invisible Enemy" so I am familiar with the characters. One thing glossed over in this episode is Sarah's speech at the end of "The Hand of Fear" that she couldn't do this anymore and she was leaving. Yeah, she changed her mind when she found out the Doctor was headed to Gallifrey but she did say "Bye." He couldn't take her there and there was really no reason for her to believe he would come back for her. [I've most of the classic Who episodes - some of which no longer exist.]
I've considered that, yes. The number of episodes is a little intimidating ;-) and I would do reactions only for select episodes, but I've definitely thought about watching all of them, yes.
Really enjoying your reactions ) Seeing as you are such a buffy fan (same lol) If you don't know already you should check out after show reacts, shes reacting to buffy/angel every episode from the start for the first time, shes currently on 7th series of buffy 4th of angel. Been a lot of fun rewatching through her eyes ) ua-cam.com/channels/vE2ptzGJ8zGp5f0JvfJcMQ.html
Thanks so much! Oh, yes, I really like After Show Reactions - I am in awe of how many shows she is able to cover - lol! I'm also watching Liam Duke go through Buffy, too. Isn't it great to be able to rewatch favorite shows like this? :-)
@@FourthWallReactions Ops yes forgot to mention liam, watching him too! Also its not the number of shows thats important but the quality and you're doing great, keep up the good reactions!
I agree so much. The story plays second fiddle to the characters here and it's so nice seeing 5 of them (if you include K9) and their relationships together and I adore this episode for it. Sarah-Jane's return is brilliant.
Ah, yes, K9! K9 must be included - he was quite a soldier in this episode, and I love that the Doctor recreated him for Sarah Jane. A wonderful episode for all those relationships - so good!
‘Goodbye Doctor.’
“Goodbye, my Sarah Jane.” 💙
Your glee at seeing Anthony Stewart Head is delightful! Old time Doctor Who fans (like me) had a similar reaction to seeing the return of the lovely Elizabeth Sladen as Sarah Jane in this episode. If you do delve into Classic Who you should definitely check out some of Sarah's stories. Her episodes are part of one of the strongest runs of episodes in the entire series.
I know the feeling. When made a small appearance in the day of the doctor. got a standing ovation in the theater I went to see it.
Thanks! It was amazing to see him in this ep. I'm really looking forward to seeing more of her in the spinoff and definitely some of the Classic Who episodes. Yay! :-)
Doctor Four and Sarah Jane was always my favourite combination - up until the Doctor-Donna
To think she was in her 60s in The Sarah Jane Adventures …
Mickey: "Me? I'm their man in the van. I'm the technical support. I'm...oh my God, I'm the tin dog."
It's "Their man in Havana." A reference to the Graham Greene novel.
@@Rudromukherjeenerv you're absolutely right. Thank you for the correction.
Haha, poor Mickey! I'm so glad he finally got up the nerve to join the crew for real. Yay! :-)
@@Rudromukherjeenerv "Our man in Havana" -- which was made into an excellent Alec Guinness movie.
Smart and independent from the start (she wasi an investigative journalist in 1971 when there weren't that many female journalists around, and so was a great role model), she was always ready to challenge the Doctor and set him straight where needed, She had great chemistry with both the 3rd and 4th Doctors, and seamlessly picks that up again with the 10th, Seeing Elisabeth Sladen reprise her role (along with K9!) more than 30 years after leaving it was pure joy for old timers like me (and it must be said she looks just as gorgeous as she did back in the 1970s),
The spin off Sarah Jane Adventures she starred in, while aimed at a younger audience, is great and well worth watching.
Usually in classic Who, when the Doctor left his companions, he left them in a better position than when he found them. Except for poor Adric.
*Potential Spoilers for Classical Doctor Who*
I mean, there have been others. Sara Kingdom (if you class her as one), Katarina, Tegan, Peri, Kamelion. Leela and Romana are probably dead too because they were on Gallifrey.
ShawnDude82 Some would argue the latter point.
@@ajivins1 True
@@icechoc Okay, yea, ya got me there. But his track record is still good, more are alive than dead.
You seem to have forgotten Peri..
Perfectly put! People tend to use this episode to point out why they hate Rose.
It's odd that some people feel this way, when (had they been paying attention!) the Doctor gives a long and pointed speech on that very subject :)
A good place to do a classic reaction would be between series 2&3,imo.
Oh, thank you so much for this! I can't wait to see the Loch Ness Monster in particular - LOL! :-)
Thanks Ian! I'm looking forward to doing just that very soon. :-)
@@FourthWallReactions Please bear in mind that we're talking '1975 BBC low-budget' here :D
@@FourthWallReactions just remember, no CGI and a budget that would make Macgyver cringe. It's all about the story and the ambition in those days.
K-9 is more than just a metal dog, he's a faithful companion.
Awww, that's so cute! I love it! Thanks for watching with me! :-)
"You know what the most difficult thing was? Coping with what happens next. No, with what doesn’t happen next. You took me to the furthest reaches of the galaxy, you showed me supernovas, intergalactic battles and then you just dropped me back on Earth. How could anything compare to that?"
Beautiful!
Thanks so much! :-) Heehee - wouldn't it be great if someone had a photo of him doing that?
Ahhhh I LOVED your reaction to seeing Anthony Head! I remember getting really excited too - he is SO wonderful in everything he does. 😊 I freaked out a bit when I realized he was one of the characters on 'Ted Lasso' & he's perfectly cast in that role too. Love love love him. 😍
LOL - I really lost my damned mind! I should really watch Ted Lasso sometime, too. ❤️
Oh, cool! I hadn't heard of that show - I will have to check it out sometime! Thanks :-)
This is a great episode in so many ways. Great story, cast and dialogue. Great reaction from you too!
Agreed, a great episode! Thanks Simon! :-)
Thanks so much! I'm looking forward to checking out all of that. So much show to look forward to! :-)
When she says “Everything has its time and everything ends.” Man that has so much meaning🙏🏾
Your reaction to seeing Anthony Head was great.
I was wondering how you'd react to Tony Head. You didn't disappoint! 😂😂😂
I was so surprised! (Clearly - LOL!) Always great to see him, and so very unlike Giles!
I dont know if you know this, but Russell T Davies who designed the Who reboot says that he based Rose on Buffy. It all connects!
The episode rose also has more than a passing resemblance to "terror of the autons" (1971) that RTD saw as a kid
Continuation, not reboot.
Oh, wow, I knew he was a Buffy admirer but didn't know that about Rose! Fascinating!
"Where are you from, the dark ages?" Sarah Jane's first adventure with the Doctor took place in the dark ages, and she said something very similar to an un-liberated woman of that time.
Oh, that's funny! Good callback! :-)
He mentions some things about his future companions on the series) :

I will definitely check that out at some point. Thanks! :-)
"We're only like 10 minutes in and I'm very happy!" Sums up this brilliant episode very well for me!😂

0:33! Finally! A "Buffy" fan reacting to the appearance of, A.S.H.! "Blind Wave" and others didn't know him at all.
"Imagine watching that happening to someone you....." "What, Doctor?" Gaaaaaaaah!!!! Ten and Rose just kill me!
Oh, that moment... just say it, Doctor! LOL
I heart Mickey so much. I echoed your Tony Head squee when I saw him (Noel Clarke) as the father at the beginning of Star Trek Into Darkness. Mickey was always one of my favorite characters and I was so glad he got a recurring role.
Oh, Mickey, he's such a prince. I think I need to see more of Noel Clarke's work!
Thank you for this info! I definitely have a lot to watch, for sure! :-)
Sarah Jane first appeared in Classic Who in a Third Doctor (Jon Pertwee) Episode called, 'The Time Warrior'. She remained right through the Third and well into the Fourth Doctor (Tom Baker) You would really like her.
Thanks! I'm excited to see more of Sarah Jane in the classic era and her spinoff :-)
You will enjoy Sara Jane in Classic Who. Her job as a Journalist suited her perfectly.
Like many others, Sarah Jane with Three and Four were a big part of my childhood. So this was such a delight when it aired. Liz Sladen is fantastic, both here and in the old episodes.
That must have been amazing to see. I can't wait to see more of her in the classic era and her spinoff!
I really enjoy your reactions. This is one of my favorite episodes. The Sarah Jane reunion is very touching. Also, I'm a big Buffy fan, too.
What a great history to have with this show! To be on Classic Who, the continuation, and a spin-off...that's pretty cool!
So far you are the only reactor I've seen have the appropriate reaction to seeing Anthony Head. It's GILES!!!!!
Im only 1/2 way into the vid so i just wanted to make sure you know about classic who- and the fact Sarah was a companion in that era
Thank you! :-)
I'm very interested to see some classic Who and be able to make some comparisons between then and now (or, a more recent 'then')
I'm loving the Buffy connections. I can see some of the influences, particularly in the mix of humor with emotion. Great stuff!
1:42 So someone actually make a theory (or a joke) about this
Where the Doctor said the word "Physics" in many different ways, since he's a gallifreyan. He maybe has different kind of words for the same meaning.
But our human mind can't coop what the other terms is, so we can just understand the word "Physics"
Oh my... the next episode. Can't wait!
That's an interesting theory! That moment was so funny, especially the "I hope everyone's getting all this down" - LOL!
Sequential semi-automatic gearbox, traction control, and black leather seats."; Sally remembers hearing "Car."
my fav of this ep is sarah jane and rose laughing at the doctor when he walks in and he's like " stop it!"
LOL - that was hilarious! :-D
Great reaction! Looking forward now to the next episode which is generally regarded as a modern day classic. So refreshing to see some great thoughts and new insights into the show - thank you!
Thank you so much! It's so much fun to share these videos with you all. :-)
best reaction of yours thus far, love it
Aw, thank you! :-)
Buffy the Vampire slayer was a HUGE nspiration for the format for this show in the first few seasons (:
Russel T.
2:47 That is SO British humor! XD
Featuring Anthony Stewart Head as New Who's first great villain. I love this episode, and Mr. Finch is a huge part of that.
Ooo, yes, he was very intense. He certainly set a tone, didn't he?
Already on season 2 lol Im binging your reactions and watching with you! Your little edits you make throughout the videos must take time, (ie when you went back and looked for bad wolf mentions etc) and add an extra level to the videos :) Also all your little inputs from other shows, ie recognising the actors or references ie 'tiny balrogs' lol, love them!
Thanks so much! :-) I like adding a little something to the videos - makes them extra fun to edit. I'm glad you're enjoying them!
I too love Buffy. I re watched it with my mom last year, she really enjoyed it too.
Oh, okay, thank you for that info! There's so much Classic Who, it's very helpful to know. :-)
I think I remember that, and it would have been so awesome! More Ripper, please! ;-)
When it was announced in 2011 that Lis Sladen had suddenly died of cancer halfway through filming series 5 Of The Sarah Jane Adventures I was devastated. The Doctor Needed Sarah Jane!
That's so sad. :-( I'm glad that her work and memory lived on - I am looking forward to seeing more of her in the Sarah Jane Adventures!
The guy you like played uther pendragon, king Arthur's dad in the BBC series Merlin that started around the time of this series of dr who (in an attempt to replicate the popularity of the return of dr who to UK sat night tv)
Ah, thank you, I will have to check that out sometime!
The highlight is seeing your reaction to Giles!!So great!
I’m such a Buffy fan girl! 🤣
Have you met Miss Smith? She's my best friend
She's lovely! :-)
sarah jane (Elizabeth Sladen rip ) wonderful to see , fantastic as always
The Sarah Jane Adventures starts from here it's about her adventures after she stops waiting for the doctor and finds her own life as she says to him at the end.
I'm looking forward to seeing that!
You better get used to seeing well known British actors in this show :) Only 9 seasons to go (about 80 episodes) and your all caught up :) Love your reaction
Thanks Colin! :-) Yes, I always get excited to see favorite actors pop up - though this one was unusually intense. LOL!
Ms. Sladen, my first childhood crush!
My same reaction on Anthony when I first watched this episode as well. :)
Fantastic! :-) Anthony Head deserves it!
Your reaction to Tony was everything. Scandalous that this was his only appearance.
Haha, thanks! :-) That was so great to see him! Even though it was only one episode, I don't think I'll ever forget that performance.
Sarah Jane also has her own spinoff.
I'm looking forward to watching that! Was this episode the kickoff of that? Or does it happen later? Thanks jeck jeck! :-)
@@FourthWallReactions
It was planned before this episode, rumors and all that, she is fan favorite like jack, may she RIP.
Thanks Amy, it does help! :-)
yes, but they were chapters in multi chapter stories, not single chapters like we have now!
Thanks Heidi! I think I may just have to check that out when I get a chance. :-)
@@FourthWallReactions Awesome! It's a really good show. I think you would really love it. I love the legends of King Arthur and Merlin, as well as Morgan Le Fay and this show only added to how much I loved them.
And Colin Morgan appeared in the 10th doctor episode Midnight
@@merlinscat Yes he did. :)
Awesome, thank you! I'm very curious to see how they do the Loch Ness monster - heehee!
@@FourthWallReactions don't be too curious... it's shocking! 😖😖
Sarah Jane is still one of my favourite companions of all time (Romana, and some future Nu Who are up there too)
Feel so emotional watching it to this day (even though, I finished season 7 before watching Classic Who)
That's so great that they brought her back! I'm looking forward to watching her spinoff, and checking out some of her adventures in some Classic Who eps. :-)
Your doing a good job, you should have more subscribers.
Aw, thanks for that, Tim! I appreciate it! My relatively new channel is little and flies under the radar a bit. ;-)
YOu can tell a lot about people's television history by how (or whether) they recognize Anthony Head. Buffy? Little Britain? Merlin?
Oh, that's interesting! :-)
@@FourthWallReactions I think the idea was to get viewers interested, and then (if it succeded) to reintroduce Classic Who elements from Series 2 onward. (The assumption being that new fans would check out the Classic series anyway).
Another reason was that it was felt that the Classic era had become too convoluted in terms of Gallifrey and all its politics; hence the concept of the Time War,which effectively created a blank slate and made everything much more accessible for new fans (or returning fans like me, who'd got a bit rusty!)
Anyway (without giving spoilers) from this point on,expect more returning 'Classic things' on a regular basis. :)
“We . Are . In . A . Car.”
LOL!
LOL
@@FourthWallReactions Well you know my number one on my list of Companions now.
You have good taste in shows. ;-)
Thanks!
Terror of the Zygons, if you want to see a certain monster!
I don't know if this has been said but Sara-Jane is David tenets favorite. David wanted to meet her and be in an episode so bad this episode happened
More claws out in this than the last episode . . .
Very reminiscent of Sesskasays’ reaction to this episode. She also reacted loudly to the appearance of ASH & was also overjoyed at Mickey joining them onboard.
Ha, did she? I watch her videos and know she loves Buffy, too - at some point I will have to start watching the Doctor Who reactions, too! ;-)
Did you know the reason why Billie and Elisabeth were laughing when the David walked in was because he had a painted on
moustache?
LOL - great trivia! :-) :-) And genuine laughter!
First time I've seen you squee! Most viewers of classic Who were also squeeing, over Sarah Jane's return, of course, so it was that sort of episode.
Squees all around! LOL - it was all a lovely, unexpected surprise. :-)
You should watch Merlin at some point got a lot of well known actors in that show also love your videos bin bin watching your Dr who ones the past couple days haha
Thanks! I recently reacted to the pilot episode of “Merlin” on my Patreon :-)
The next episode is my favorite episode of Doctor Who.
The Girl in the Fireplace! :-)
Buffy fan? An intellectual 😉
Would be great to see reactions to a few classic Who episodes with Sarah Jane Smith
;-) I'm putting it on My List!
Love the outright fan-girling!
Lol - Thanks! I couldn't help myself. :-)
Have you considered going through Classic Who in order?
I've considered that, yes. The number of episodes is a little intimidating ;-) and I would do reactions only for select episodes, but I've definitely thought about watching all of them, yes.
also buffy is my favorite show i lost it when i saw giles
Yesss! I love that it was in a school setting, too. I swear, if they'd had him in a library... LOL
Hmmm....something tells me you should watch Merlin....plus its the 2nd best fantasy show to come from the UK :)
I definitely have to give that one a try. :-)
Really enjoying your reactions ) Seeing as you are such a buffy fan (same lol) If you don't know already you should check out after show reacts, shes reacting to buffy/angel every episode from the start for the first time, shes currently on 7th series of buffy 4th of angel. Been a lot of fun rewatching through her eyes )

Thanks! :-)
Now I want to see your reaction to season 2 of Torchwood...
Ah, Torchwood...I think season 1 isn't far away... ;-)
