Progressives Rehabilitating Kamala's HORRIBLE Record (w/ Alec Karakatsanis)

  • Civil rights attorney, former public defender, and founder of Civil Rights Corps joins Bad Faith to discuss his new article which exposes the massive disinformation campaign around police body cameras which has led liberals to embrace surveillance technology as a progressive reform. He explains the evidence which exposes the true purpose of body cameras, and addresses whether the recent on-camera murder of Sonya Massey complicates the argument. He then takes on a new trend rehabilitating Kamala Harris's criminal justice record now that she's the presumptive nominee. Were claims about her record overblown in 2020? Or is she, in fact, a cop?

Great show ! Alec is on point. After a thirty year career in law enforcement at the state and federal level, everyday was a battle to retain my humanity for myself and various communities I worked in against my law enforcement colleagues and the overall criminal justice system. The reforms posed by government officials are surface- with no intention of actually changing anything! It is exhausting!

I agree, but I couldn't help but wonder why the people with the special interests in Congress fought so hard to keep the toothless bill from getting passed. They really seemed to downplay qualified immunity being a factor. Why not implement these policies if the police state is in agreement? They'd make more money and we'd be locked up more often. A win win for them.

A politician’s talk when they are running for election is no guarantee they’ll walk their talk once elected. Therefore one can only judge a candidate by their past record of use or abuse of elective power. IMO Kamala’s appalling record as Attorney General of California is relevant. The problem is, Trump can’t run against her right wing record because it’s his as well. Only third party Jill Stein could expose Kamala. But DNC won’t allow Stein into a public debate.

@@Hemingway-dq4fx Here, specifically, it’s the reality that voting third party doesn’t chasten the party from which it drains votes. It reliably opens the door to the worse alternative.
Maybe one day the electoral margins will be thick enough or the Left organized enough to produce a Democratic candidate who has been consistently responsive to progressive concerns. The project merits the effort. But right now neither is the case and we will have dirty hands no matter what. For most of our lives and the foreseeable future, Presidential elections are mitigatory, not proactive.
Bri’s arguments don’t do much more than point out that this is a terrible system. We know that already. When it comes to strategy, she seems to think that doomed moral stands aren’t harmful just because they’re right. It doesn't matter how frequently police are given psychological tests if the tests are so ineffective that they let an officer like this through the process of becoming a police officer.
It seems there are some police officers who totally lose it when a black woman (or man) doesn't obey their every command in the exact way that they expect.
How can a written test weed this out? There needs to be live-in-person training (without live bullets) where police candidates like this can be rejected based on what happens to them physiologically and how they react when they are in these situations.
Having a gun doesn't give anyone magical powers to control the actions of people especially people who might be mentally ill.

    This guy is soooooo right.
If gun & police violence is one of your concerns I really can't recommend Malcolm gladwell's six-part series on gun violence in America (don't get me wrong, Gladwell can be nauseating on a number of subjects as a liberal's liberal BUT despite his many glaring and brutal blind spots. I do actually genuinely believe he cares about people and this subject specifically. One of the episodes was dedicated to the fact that the declining murder rate is not so much a result of declining murders but rather a consequence of doctor's who've treated an explosion of gunshot victims over the last 20 years getting significantly better at saving people's lives. Also, having better equipment and even better locations to deal with gunshot violence. As the fact that level 1 trauma centers (Gladwell also explains what these are and their complete total relevance and tragedy of the American Healthcare system but I digress. LOL )are being finally built in underserved areas despite the. not making them enough money but were forced to due to the mass rates of murder in the inner city and how that resulted in that decline of murder victims but NOT SHOOTINGS. How the economics and geography of these city murders and how these hospitals and The systems in place to treat them is super relative to this specific conversation and more importantly the outcomes that can be used to argue a point one way or another, as this amazing guest has pointed out.
I would love to see them work together on something to be honest, gladwell irritates the s*** out of me sometimes BUT honestly, he really does bring in some really important and relevant points if you can get past some of his boomer liberal crap. (YET!!!!! I've recently discovered audiobooks as I sit in traffic constantly and I can't recommend his book, David and Goliath enough. It's a wonderful examination of how we are not as powerless as we think, an examination of our education system, most importantly how we ORGANIZE and honestly, it really made me think of BJG!!! I'm an extremely pessimistic person and neither she nor he is. So I try to do the best I can to listen to something that is realistically helpful for our ability to be able to get out of bed in the morning LOL!)
    Anywhooo
I don't hate the player, I really fucking HATE the game and the people who profit from it OR EVEN WORSE, DON'T GIVE A S*** BECAUSE IT DOESN'T AFFECT THEIR LIVES OR THE PEOPLE THEY LOVE.
Such a great episode and so timely considering Kamala is going to be the Margaret Thatcher of political police oriented violence against black, Brown, unions, environmentalist and or anyone who the establishment feels is making them just an even tiny little bit less rich. The powers that be will 110% say, "we elected a black woman president so all of this violence is completely justified."
Voting third party has never been more important than now as they've chosen their identity politics Avatar who I am afraid will Usher in the most violent repression of the Left we have seen in a generation. If we can siphon off enough votes to ensure that Trump is elected, everybody will have to cancel brunch and actually address our slide towards actual fascism.
THE SYSTEM WORKS, let's stop f****** supporting it. Vote third party.

These imposters always change their names wherever they go. In Eastern Europe, they were known as the Name-Stealers.
Now, they’re trying to steal Palestinian lands, culture, food, and even their organs and skin. Look it up. Israel has the biggest skin bank which shows that they’re NOT native to the land due to them having high skin cancer. Now they’re going after indigenous Palestinian vital organs.

A very good conversation about body cams, ‘community policing’ and police propaganda. However, I still don’t have any grasp of Harris’s stance on Israel/Palestine. It’s a vague notion in the media depending on what an organization wants you to believe - whatever the real truth is. I do believe we will be learning what that truth is - there’s too many of us out here who can’t vote for someone not on the right side of history. It’s a serious matter of conscience for too many.

This email quote below written by JD Vance is not only a good example what we were led to believe was the purpose of body cameras, but also where JD Vance stands in comparison to Kamala who is pushing her prosecutor past :
"I love the body camera movement, and anything that puts cops back in the mindset of service and protection instead of control and coercion," Vance wrote to Nelson in 2014, the Times reported. "I hate the police. Given the number of negative experiences I've had in the past few years, I can't imagine what a black guy goes through."

*1 of 2. This is how you should always vote:*
We must fully criticize and _always vote_ *against* (& less authoritarian than) both the Republican *and* Democratic Parties- including Kamala Harris, AOC, all of the squad, Bernie Sanders, Edward Markey, Mark Pocan, the justice democrats, & all other democrats. Vote in every single election- at all levels. And also _endorse or anti-endorse,_ in all elections you can, for outside your voting jurisdiction.
For _all_ public positions. And this same strategy applies against the same one or more party-monopolies in _all_ countries worldwide.
Real progressives will never be Democratic Members or Democratic loyalists. Never vote for _any_ Republican member or loyalist either.
If no candidates for a position fit that bill:
    -Where _write-ins_ are permissible, always write-in an anti-authoritarian person;
-Where write-ins aren’t permissible, always vote uncommitted or leave the ballot blank.
This will continuously reduce the power of _all_ authoritarian parties in the party monopolies: Until our task is complete.
Repeat strategy for all new authoritarian parties that emerge.

Fascinating and necessary conversation and of course more are needed, and not just on media but face to face. One thing: as a Latino who grew up in Chicago and lived 19 years in Colombia, who observed CBS news tell their story in the early 1970s on 6pm News about Vietnam I conclude that in modern societies elites and middle class groups want security and end up demanding violence against real or imagined enemies. I think and feel that majorities in the US do not know what was done in Vietnam. It is more a history of spectacle: the US suffered so much in Vietnam. Even progressives who express fair and needed outrage for Gaza must understand that we (humanity) have been living long timelines of capitalism/violence through the spectacle of violence, patriotic violence of course, so spectacle we see we consume, spectacle not reality, just reels and pictures, just denouncing, but not real, not felt in flesh and blood, not political action, so in the US - could also be Germany, UK, France...- people know that they do not want Lybia here, Vietnam here, Colombia here, Argentina here, so they can push the historical spectacle of US violence against other countries aside and choose the patriotic narrative, better law and order under Kamala than some terrible violence from the Right.
