Tried using it 4 times and it instantly clogged my airbrush, I had no idea why. Didn't even realize it was a lacquer vs. acrylic, and definitely wasn't doing 1:1 (at least) thinning ratio.

Great video, thanks for taking the time. Very interesting about the rapid thinner for metallics, going to have to check this out, been using MLT for everything and I think this will help a lot for improving metallics. A few tips, a nappy (diaper) bin is great for disposal of kitchen roll / waste when spraying lacquers, they are designed to keep the smell of shit at bay so work well for keeping the smell of lacquer thinners contained. Lint free or low lint wipes for cleaning the airbrush bowl, it stops paper/dust particles being left in the bowl and coming through on the next spray session after a quick colour change, a lot of cleaning supply companies have these and are pretty cheap, they are also more of a cloth so have more "cut" for shifting stubborn bits of paint. Lincoln Wright does great videos on brush painting lacquers for MaK models, interesting stuff about reactivating lacquers with MLT, you should check it out.

I love these videos. You are doing a great service to the community. One thing I would say about brushing is you do want it to be thin but not as thin as air brushing and it is not a 'brushing' motion you want to use but rather a stippling motion and you don't want to re-break the surface by going over an area you just did. You can avoid all brush marks but the sheen will likely look a little different as the paint takes longer to settle. Same principals as you described with the metal. Lincoln Wright @ PaintOnPlastic has an awesome tutorial on hand brushing lacquers on his page. The dude is a hand painting god.

Wondering if it would react with it poorly? Being that the main use of Mr Color is airbrush, for some of the finer details I have hobby acrylic paints. Was wondering if I could still use my go-to paints for the finer details that I can't achieve with an airbrush.
Thanks for your tutorial. I am a novice on the airbrush, but using my Sparmax Max 3 (20 psi), and a 2/3 thinner (not self levelling though) 1/3 sail colour did a great job on the underside of my F2B wings. The upper side was the WNW PC10 mix in Tamiya acrylics, 50/50 thinner/paint, and again came out very well. And yes, regular hardware store lacquer thinner works very well as a cleaner. BTW, single use plastics are banned in most of Australia, so the source of testing spoons has dried up!

Super good video, thanks as always. Would you recommend their surface finisher line like the 1000, 1200, and 1500 or do you think you even need primers for normal gunpla plastic with lacquers?
Thanks for this. I've airbrushed acrylics for a while -am used to doing the drying technique, so useful to see how much you can load up lacquers. Haven't tried the Mr Hobby lacquers yet, but have used their aqueous line and it's very good

Barbatos...I am going to air brush a guitar (wood body) using Mr. Color number 57 metallic blue green. I would like to try painting with them on glass...and try to dilute them as much as possible to make the colors seethrough if possible. I don't know if it can be done, but on glass I just hope it will work
Hey I bought the mr. Color 108, 109 and 110 specifically asking for anything else I would need to brush the paint, and the store I was buying it from recommended me to buy the levelling thinner, I did this before watching this video, can I use the levelling thinner for brushing? Or should I buy the retarder? Or can I use the levelling thinner instead?
Ah my go to paint line. I struggled with airbrushing before I found Mr. Color. If only they weren’t sold out half the time everywhere! I snagged some of their anniversary colors from Spraygunner and am looking for a project to use them on.
I don't yet. If you thin the paint as I show here you shouldn't get orange peel as it's caused by the paint not being thinned enough plus low air pressure..A lacquer properly thinned should never orange peel. It's one of the reasons I love lacquers
@@barbatosrex9473 hi, I get a rough surface when I spray .. not every time but a high percent. Akan sprays better , but I’m open to suggestions on how to improve. It’s quite warm right now, would that affect the drying time and cause the roughness (orange peel )? Thanks
@@davidb-NZ try thinning the paint more and getting closer to the piece. You might want to lower the air pressure so you can get in closer. Go with a dusting coat first. Flash it dry then another dust coat. After that go for a wet coat or two. Don't flood it but it must be a wet coat at the end, spray it wet enough but not eso much as it runs.
Hey, i just started airbrushing using mr color paints. I have two issues im running into. Using a iwata eclipse, my gloss paints turn out semingloss or matte and my metal paints are grainy. What am i doing wrong?
Hi Mr. Barbatos, I am pretty new to this hobby and ordered myself a slew of supplies today. I haven't invested in an airbrush but bought some mr.color super metallics to paint fairly small pieces on a kit. I will be brushing by hand with Mr. Color's Rapid Thinner. In the video you suggested using the retarder instead. Will I have any issues if I mix rapid thinner with metallics to hand brush on plastic?
This must be the most informative video I have seen on the internet about mr color paints. Thanks! I have a question, flat or gloss?? Which one are the basic colors?
I'm new to Mr Color paint. Your video here is very helpful. I'm trying to understand how you determine whether a color is a high gloss like the red you have used here vs the semi gloss look of the yellow?
Unfortunately most of the popular colors are out of stock at spray gunner website and it’s very hard to find it at local stores Video is great. Thank you
Awesome review as always!!! They're a great durable line. Just note for brush painting you need the leveling thinner it makes a huge difference with brush strokes.

You'll be fine with the Leveling Thinner. It's thinner with retarder added to it so you're good to go 👍
@@barbatosrex9473 few, thank you, for a second I thought that I got scammed
Just ordered mine. I hope you're right. It sure does look and work good!
How do you clean your eye droppers? (thanks for the video by the way)
Ah my go to paint line. I struggled with airbrushing before I found Mr. Color. If only they weren’t sold out half the time everywhere! I snagged some of their anniversary colors from Spraygunner and am looking for a project to use them on.
Love the Anniversary colors. Awesome brand
Thanks for the video. Quick question. You paint the spoon red, all that layer of paints, and parts, all with 1 ml of mr color paint?
Yes
@@barbatosrex9473 awesome. i want to start paintbrush my model kit and your video is a great help
Thanks for the video. Do you have a video where you talk about avoiding “orange peel”, thanks
Great video! Thanks for sharing.
Hey, i just started airbrushing using mr color paints. I have two issues im running into. Using a iwata eclipse, my gloss paints turn out semingloss or matte and my metal paints are grainy. What am i doing wrong?
WHAT NUMBER IS THAT RED/PINK AND WHAT AR YOUR MEASURMENTS FOR THINNER/PAINT RATIO? TY
Hi Mr. Barbatos,
I am pretty new to this hobby and ordered myself a slew of supplies today.
Great stuff as always Rex!
This must be the most informative video I have seen on the internet about mr color paints. Thanks! I have a question, flat or gloss?? Which one are the basic colors?
Both are primary colors that just finished differently. Although some colors aren't available in Matte so you still have to top coat them in Matte
@@XNT-Shiyosa922X back in the day I would mix testors gloss black with flat black to make a beautiful matte black.
hi,,, can i use mr hobby Mr. color 47 is red, and Mr hobby aqueous color thinner 110 for dilute,,??? thanks and hi from panama,, 👋🏽🇵🇦😎👏🏽
No. You can use Mr Thinner for Aqueous but you can't use Aqueous thinner with Mr Color
@@barbatosrex9473 thanks 🙌🏽☺
very important to know that,,,
I'm new to Mr Color paint. Your video here is very helpful. I'm trying to understand how you determine whether a color is a high gloss like the red you have used here vs the semi gloss look of the yellow?
Do you use a mask when brushing lacquer paints?
What clear coat would you recommend for armor/tanks using these paints?
hi, so my question is, how can i paint over black? like black roll bar in an rc, i want it silver, how can i brush pain it?
Unfortunately most of the popular colors are out of stock at spray gunner website and it’s very hard to find it at local stores
Video is great. Thank you
Go to, gundampros.com and they have a ton of selection still. It’s a local hobby shop.
Awesome review as always!!! They're a great durable line. Just note for brush painting you need the leveling thinner it makes a huge difference with brush strokes.
You are correct, I do love their Leveling Thinner, it's one of my favorite products.
@@barbatosrex9473 are you going to test their mr. Metal series? The colored metallic set?
@@lifeinjersey9846 I did test the Mr. Metallic and Mr. Metallic 2 series. Is that what you're talking about? That line up is Gold, Silver, Iron and colors like that. If that's what you mean then I did post a video of them. Awesome colors too
@@barbatosrex9473 ah now I remembered the name. Mr Metallic Color GX it has a nice little range of various colored metallic like peach, red. Yellow green, violet. Deep blue etc
@@lifeinjersey9846 oh yes the GX line. I have them all and I'm planning a video on them too 👍
Rex’s I need your help! I seen a Revell battle ship New Jersey 1/350 model in a display case on vacation it had one of the best pint jobs I have ever seen. I ask what paint he use he said (Revell email color paints) it a enamel with other stuff mix in it but what ever I do to mix this paint for my sprayer I can NEVER get right 😡 Rex hopefully you can help me out with this problem because I would love to use it. Thanks for your show I have learn a lot stuff from you 👍🏻
Hey man I recently just got into using the Mr Color line of paints and I tried using it as brush painting so I tested it with the same retarder you used on a spoon with Vallejo primer and the paint started looking cracked can you help me with any tips?
So what is a good starter air brush and compressor combo I tried using your link but it wouldn't work for me just took me to their site.

Very helpfull your videos!! Congrats man!! May i ask for your advise?, i only had painted with tamiya acrylics, i use 1:1.2 pain/thinner ratio, mr surface 1000, dry for two days with a fan, here is over 30’C and i had problems with the scratch resistanse specially with the top coat clear, i would like to ask you for your help if the lacker paint are more resistanse and witch brand??
When painting mr color what size needle in your air brush.
The great thing about these is you use any needle size. Here unused a 0.3mm
@@barbatosrex9473 thank you
@barbatosrex9473 I'm using .3 and my gloss black keeps coming out semigloss or flat. Am I not doing it wet enough. In the video it looks like your pulling the trigger all the way back. Should I do heavier coats?
What primer do you recommend when using laquer?
Great video thanks.
You mentioned however that the Mr Color is laquer paints.
To my understanding they are acrylic solvent based.
Could you perhaps clarify this for me?
Great video and useful info. !!! Can I use this over silver or gold?
Yes, for sure
@@barbatosrex9473 Wow! Thank you so much for your answer!
Thanks for sharing again! Learned a lot from all your videos about paints! Which Air compressor are you using? No Name Brand Tooty NN-AG326? Can you please provide a list of Mr. Hobby Procon Boy airbrushes you use all the time? Thanks!
WHAT IS THE NUMBER ON THAT YELLOE I HAVE TO GET IT
Barbatos Rex: What airbrush do you recommend for model cars (1:20, 1:24). I am leaning towards your Mr. Hobby PS-290 but not sure. Thanks.
The 290 is great for scale autos. However keep in mind it goes thru a serious amount of paint in a short time. The fan cap is great for car kits too. But when shopping for a airbrush for scale cars always go with a needle size of at least 0.4mm
Also please use the link in my description for the airbrush 👍
@@barbatosrex9473 Thanks for the advice. I actually ended up ordering an Iwata LPH50 mini spray gun with 0.4mm nozzle.
Nice vid!!!!
Excellent demonstration! How do you dispose of the used solvents/thinners?
Pour it into a can of cat litter. Once absorbed you can toss it. I also use home oil change kits that are used for changing your car oil.
Love the video. Can the same brush paint technique you show be applied to metallic lacquer paint from mr hobby?
Yes, exactly the same 👍
