I have been a P bass guy since I’ve been playing, switched to the Mustang this week and loving it
Tyler, you have the best reviews and you have no agenda either. Bravo..
Thank you for the support man, very kind! T
Both sound gorgeous and loved the Mustang with both pickups 100%
Love the Mustang! 🎸🙋💞
The difference is big when the plectrum is used, specially for the P pickup, I think. A lot of mais range is lost on the Mustang, more like a scooped sound, IMO. Awesome comparison!
Thank you, I agree, the mustang is not as midrangey as a P! T
Really nice comparison. I'm small (5'7") and the Mustang is VASTLY easier for me to play, especially down low on the neck while standing up.
All these amazing basses absolutely spoil us for choice.
Each instrument has strengths & weaknesses, and my job as a songwriter/bassist is to learn my options and deploy them to best fit the emotion of the track
I will say playing a Mustang makes me feel groovy and smooth as all hell just because I can get around it like a guitar neck
But the full-scale bass makes it easier to get a great tone, and the longer neck also feels easier to stay in tune since the strings are less slack
The Mustang sort of reminds me more of an Indie/Synthwave bass somehow
If you put a gun to my head right now, I'd say "full scale for recording most stuff, Mustang for playing live"
and I'd be totally happy, I think :)
I struggle with the long scale but I definitely have to say precision is more suitable for any kind of style... Impressive the difference using the pick
Thanks for the video. I just love the woody tone of mustang.
Good comparison. Very clear to hear what each bass is about. Thanks! ...I need both😀
Wanted a Mustang but I think the stock pickups were not quite "there." Routed for Aguilar P's and installed an Aguilar J. Transformed the sound.
Thanks for this Tyler. I wanted a bright bass that cuts through a synth mix. The Mustang fits the bill.
How’s it working out?
I'm very happy with it. The jazz bass pickup works very well mixed with the mustang one. The greasebucket circuit is more useful than I thought it would be too. There are a lot of tones in this bass. Very versatile. Came set up well, with possibly only a minor tweak needed to play perfectly that I haven't got around to. Looks great and sounds great too. No complaints really. I may go to heavier guage strings, though that's a personal taste thing.
@@shane9675 So good heck yea man. how’s that go again I always forget? The thicker the string the more tension there is right? I think more tension would be very important with short scale to get into more areas sonically.
It still sounds excellent as it is. I'm thinking simply along the lines of thicker strings more low end.
@@shane9675 yea that’s what I’m thinking too my bro, more tension for a tighter bottom end response
Fantastic video. Exactly what I needed. Appreciate it!!
Louie no problem! Thank you for watching, it’s much appreciated! T
The first 6 or 7 Gentle Giant albums were recorded with a Fender Music Master bass. A cheap, short scale student model. I think Free Hand is when Ray got the P-Bass.
Brilliant side by side !
Thank you! I try to have side-by side comparisons in all my videos
Another awesome video. Thanks!
Cool comparison! Mustang sounds boxy to me, though it does seem to cut nicely and could be what a given track needs. The Precision (with P pickup) provides more of the foundation I almost always go for.
Yeah there are some situations you would prefer that "boxy" sound in a mix, but that P definitely sounds more "professional"
Surprised how much I prefer the sound of the Mustang.
Precision all the way. In every configuration.
I’ve had both. I probably share the same stature as you. Not sure what it is. I prefer the chunkier neck of the p bass. Easier to me. Just my opinion.
5:40 - picking on P pickup, 100p tone
You're not correct: The Am. Performer P is also available with a rosewood fingerboard.
Sorry, you’re right - I meant to say in that colour! T
@@TylerSpicerpardon I'm no native speaker, that's why I might have misunderstood.
No you were right I definitely said it wrong in the video - my bad!
Great video!!!
Thank you for watching! T
Very useful.... I was mustang oriented now I' m no longer sure about it
Simple as it should be.. Two instruments, give the same settings and let them to talk
Was the Mustang, with the short scale, actually easier to play?
It can be, but depends on your style!
I play a Fender Mustang short scale, not sure if it's the same model as shown. I love it but the one problem I find is it's not as easy to sing and play bass, because it's not as forgiving as placing your fingers on the frets because they are closer together. I use 35's and it still sounds great. Never had any complaints about the sound, everyone is stoked when I play bass for them.
Which is your favourite? Mustang or Precision?
For me its the precision, maybe it is just the looks and the tone. But the mustangs are perfect for guitarists who doesn't want a huge bass .
Precision all the way.
Mustang but I play at home for my own enjoyment.
Which is your favourite Tyler?
Both, for different musical reasons...
I liked the Player Mustang from your earlier video best of all. Is that the grease bucket effect?
Aaand, what are your thoughts? A Player and upgrade the pickups, or a Performer and mod a bypass switch for the grease bucket? Is the American made and string through bridge worth the extra price?
American made isn’t worth the price if you’re gonna mod it.
@@CW0123 this was from a few months ago. Ended up going with the Squire CV, which has a string through bridge. Stuck some LeBella flatwounds on it.
I have an AP Mustang bass and I can't get a big fat time out of it and the output is really low as well. It doesn't sound like yours even with upgraded strings.
Mustang Fingers P bass with a pick
No doubt!!!!
This is the comment.
P bass has the authentic fat bass sound that the Mustang lacks. The mustangs sounds a little like the Mexican P bass.
Not really, Short scale bass has less upper armonics so they actually sound more fat BUT more focused, that means they have less punch and sustain, but they really sound big and fat.
@@LCA1985 I have heard something very similar to this but it’s kinda confusing because it’s actually the full scale that has clarity where it matters in terms of its shape sonically on the low to low mid. The mustang might have focus in terms of overtones or something but that doesn’t matter when the punch is inherently lacking I feel. I think it’s a mixture of the tension and the model, maybe a 32 inch might be the sweet spot
Hello!! Can u please tell me the weight of mustang bass?
All mustangs re lighter but vary. more around the 3.5-7 kg mark! T
..had a 71 Mustang, and 71 P bass. The P bass would eat the Mustang in terms of smooth roll off and playability. Granted, these are different beasts, but I'd still the P bass the edge.
Yea I wish that mustang had that full low end, because it’s so easy to play around that small fretboard. I honestly think there has to be a better short scale pj bass out there, schecter banshee maybe?
There's always pedals:)
This model of Mustang bass isn't a PJ, it's a PM. That's a real Mustang pickup in the neck. The Player series I have has a real PJ setup, and a three way toggle, not that messy tone/volume mixing malarkey. Slightly heavier strings so you don't strangle it, and you got a veritable power player. It's so dang fast Istanbul unreal, whether pick or fingerstyle.
Are the split pickups different or is it basically like how mustang guitar pickups are just strat pickups
Well clearly the mustang pickup is a lot smaller which means less winds
2:29
I think that because the Pbass has the maple fretboard it gave it a much brighter sound, where I prefer the rosewood’s sound.. The mustang actually sounded better to my ear in nearly every comparison but if the Pbass had a rosewood board there would be a tighter competition here...
Mustang looks and sounds more funny.
You have to compare the same fretboards configuration maple with maple and rosewood with rosewood in order to have a fair comparison.
Luis C.A. I would agree it makes a difference, but just doing the best with what I can get my hands on! T
@@TylerSpicer hahah indeed, not an easy job. Nice work btw keep on reviewing!
Well done. But...why avoid the open E?? Therein lies the Mustang's weenie low end authority.
I wouldn’t say the mustang is weenie down there. It has more sub than a P Bass in my experience, but is not as present in the low mid region - which is what gives the P bass a sound of thickness/fatness. T
P bass all day everyday......better tone.
I'm a P man 💪 T
No comparison the Precision smokes the Mustang hands down
Was 99% about to pull the trigger on the Mustang. This video has me thinking. The P sounded less aggressive, more 'grown up', but i'm a guitar player. I'm wondering if putting some flats on the Mustang would put it more in P territory? Thanks for taking the time to do this.
