Moab got hit on Saturday night and it put down like 2.5 inches in 25 minutes. Flooded a big chunk of town.

As former AZ residents, we never tire of seeing the beauty and danger of the monsoon storms. If anyone is in the area, the washes along the Sonoran Desert Parkway in North Phoenix get wild! Enjoy the SW, Dr. Timmer!

This is my favorite time of the year - people don’t understand the amount of relief you can get from a monsoon storm when it’s 110 degrees out and the temp drops into the low 80’s high 70’s.

The wonderful thing about a good monsoon season is the greening of the desert. I just had a nice day drive in the mountains south of Tucson and it was dang near a lush jungle in comparison to the usual brown colors of the drier seasons. Sure, I had to deal with some rough (dried out) washes and some sand on the paved highways, but absolutely worth it.

Dang...That debris flow at 1.54 really shows how long it had been since rain last hit that area! Desert storms maybe crazy but I will take anything we can het right now and fingers crossed for good snowpack up in the Rockies this year and many more to come.

@@ReedTimmerWx Activity in the fore cast. Time of the year. This one was fast. Real fast. Couldn't believe how fast that water came up. Poor lady almost got swept away. She was stranded on the "jump" wall which is about 5' tall. Love your shows, keep them coming. I spent a few years in Illinois from '90- '96 and have been through 3 tornadoes. Plainfield was right next door. Actually Crest Hill was across the street. Fascinating weather.

Reed, I would love it if you could explain how the clouds actually hold the rain considering when you fly through a cloud it looks like a fog and not something you would think could hold rain since it is not dense enough or thick enough for my mind to understand how it is holding water.... it just doesn't look like it would/could. Thank you!

I miss the monsoon season we use to get here in SoCal. I've noticed since last decade there's been monster storm systems out in the Pacific where they flow freely with no anomalies but once it got close to southern California they either disintegrated or diverted around Baja and proceed normally across the rest of the nation. Rancher friends have noticed that too!

We have not seen a moonsoon season like this since about 2012. We have been under flash flood watches and advisories for about a week. This July beginning of August has been full of cloudy skies and high humidity as we are used to dry 105-120 degree weather. We are still looking at rain at least for another week here and we are loving it. Our storms pretty much happen at night and makes for great viewing especially if your in a strip hotel the views are amazing with all the lightning strikes.

Family + I got caught in a flash flood in Canyonlands NP, 1970s. We were amazed that 1' of water could carry 2' boulders ,iles down the paved road. We outran the flood, raced our car across a connecting hiway, jammed it up a hill where we pitched our tent and spent the night, water roaring below. Next morn had to clear the road of logs + boulders as we descended several miles to the main hiway. A lesson in erosion + the power of water!

So, what is the difference between excess rain water filling a gorge or wash, a flood going through, and a flash flood going through?
Except for the one with all the branches and limbes (which I'd call a flood), these all looked like just excess rain water. I didn't see anything I'd call "flash" flood.
    Please explain!
