    Very good video and rundown of the system. Only thing that took me a sec was that it wouldn't playback the separate audio files (mono 1, mono 2) for the different inputs. I had to transfer it to my computer to confirm that it recorded separate tracks for each of my mic inputs (which it did). But great overview

    This really helped my decision about whether to purchase this Tascam DR-70d or the Zoom H6

    Great tutorial, thanks. If this was recorded thru the 70D you might want to reconsider using the limiter and low cut-off. Very bass heavy and what sounds like clipping in the audio of this video. Otherwise super helpful instructions.

    I love the specs, but I will probably buy the 60DMKII because the form factor looks more intentional mounted under the camera on a tripod. They both easily fit my needs, but I usually overbuy, but that stopped me this time.

    very informative. Thinking in buying one of these. I wonder why you say from 16 to 24 bit there is room ,? bits are just quality not db .

    • @DotDotMatrix
      @DotDotMatrix  2 роки тому +1

      With 24 bit there is more vertical resolution to boost the signal in editing without introducing artifacts or quantization noise...so there would be more room to alter the original audio which would probably involve boosting db, without the audio sounding processed... but any kind of effects (reverb, dereverb, denoise, de-esser) can benefit from more room to do calculations without having to round values.

    Can you use the 70D as an audio interface for Zoom and Teams type calls?

    • @DotDotMatrix
      @DotDotMatrix  9 місяців тому

      No, it doesn’t work as a computer audio I/O box…. I remember looking at some Zoom field recorders 4 years ago that could do that… and maybe newer Tascam field recorders can.

    OK...4 channel recorder: HOW DO YOU MONITOR 4 CHANNELS?!?!?! Quad headphones? Two pairs of head phones? are there two head phone jacks?
    I think I want to buy one. My DR-100 has always kind of sucked, and it only has two XLR Channels, & I am wanting more mics!
    I like the mini-component form factor!
    IMHO

    • @DotDotMatrix
      @DotDotMatrix  Рік тому +1

      When a channel is armed for recording it can be monitored (so 4 channels can be monitored at the same time). You can pan channels to the left and right if you want to hear how a stereo recording will sound, but if your playing back 4 mono recordings made at the same time you can only hear 1 at a time… You can record Stereo (like if your using AUX IN to record a stereo signal) and those 2 channels would be merged into 1 file… for stereo playback. Also you can do a 2MIX which just mixdowns all 4 channels into a stereo track… which is really only useful for pros who want to record something without having to take it into an editor.

    Which model is bang for the money If I want to do recording in a room?

    • @DotDotMatrix
      @DotDotMatrix  2 роки тому

      Pricing is very linear...It really has to do with how many tracks you think you'll need... $300 DR-70D is right in the middle... but most people might only need to record 1 or 2 tracks at a time... then it's better to compare the $200 DR-60D mkII to the NEWER $200 DR-40X (it's kind of a Zoom clone) 2 XLR tracks and 2 built in mic tracks WITH the ability use it as a usb audio interface for a computer in addition to being a field recorder (also like a Zoom)

    can you use an external TC generator on this?

    • @DotDotMatrix
      @DotDotMatrix  Рік тому

      I would say maybe/probably, but it’s not meant for it… that is a feature of the DR-701D (and other newer or more expensive products in their portables line.) Aside from there being no mention of it in the manual, and no TRS port…I looked up the Deity TC-1 and the way it sends time code to cameras with no TRS port is to use 1/8” audio jack and send SMTPE to the left audio channel and record audio though a mic built into the unit for the right… So the Deity audio is just for reference… If you were to give up 2 channels on the Tascam by plugging into EXT IN 1/2 you could get the same results, but you would only have 2 tracks for recording “real audio” with the mics you actually want to use… IT COULD WORK, but I’ve never done it before. So double check my theory before making a purchase.

      I’ve never had sync issues recording up to 40 minute takes at 48khz…I always do a clap on camera at start and don’t even think about clapping at the end of a take…even thought it would probably be a good habit to get into for long takes.

    • @DotDotMatrix

      You would have to say “clap on” [clap twice] then say “clap off” [clap twice again] and that way your clapper devices will resume normal function and your audio will have a sync reference.

      @@DotDotMatrix 😆 in all seriousness, have you ever recorded with just the internal mics? Like beyond the sample in this video. Reason I ask is because I’d like to do some ambient recording in various environments but don’t have any decent mics as of now. I realize I could get a hand held recorder that’s probably better suited for that, but some them don’t record line in that well. Thanks

    • @DotDotMatrix
      @DotDotMatrix  Рік тому +1

      The mics “work” if your casually trying to record stereo (or mono)…it’s definitely a clean sound and just using an all-in-one unit can be convenient sometimes. If you plan on getting better mics I would go with something like this that has expandability… Tascam DR-40X is similar (but is more like a Zoom copy). I’ve been meaning to try putting the entire Tascam in a zeppelin to see how it sounds recording outdoor ambient sounds, cause the last time I tried it I was getting too much wind hitting the mics. So “no” I don’t use the built in mics, but anything that would require open mics is what you would use them for… live music was definitely what Tascam had in mind when making it.

  • @U2WB

    I own one of these, and my one biggest disappointment is that the unit has no playback feature ! First time that I’ve ever owned a recording device which could not play back its own recordings !

    • @DotDotMatrix
      @DotDotMatrix  Рік тому +2

      Is it DR-70D or one of the cheaper ones…? When your on the main screen at the bottom it says TASCAM_#### (whatever number the filename is.) Pressing Play (to the left of the Record button) will play that file with audio out going to the Phones jack or Line Out. Stopping and pressing the Forward and Back buttons bellow Play will move between files stored on the SD Card to be able to play them. You CAN’T do multitrack, (playback 1 track while recording another) which might be an issue for people who want to have a mobile recording studio. And it DOESN’T have a built in speaker, but assuming you have headphones you can do playback on the unit.
