    I just got one based on your video - thanks. I'm not a DSLR man or pro in any field but I love it. I do handycam / nature-cam stuff for a hobby. And when I get the chance I like to play guitar outdoors. This works well for my needs. I would say that the batteries thing is fine for my use. I do find the indicators run down quickly to begin with, but at the 3-4 bars mark seemed to go on for hours. Again, many thanks for posting the video.

    I've had this recorder for over two years and it is worth the money, if you need a basic recorder for basic shooting situations, this is good enough. The only thing is that you can't monitor the channels separately, you have to temporarily turn down the level on the channel you don't want to monitor. The only other workaround is to record one channel on L and the other on R, which causes more work in post.

    Can I use a passive lav mic connected to a stereo to mono 1/4 adapter going into one of the TRS/XLR jacks? The H4n Pro does not provide plug power on the XLR inputs. If I connect a single lav mic to the only 1/8" jack on the H4n Pro, the built in stereo mics are disabled. Last question: Does the DR-70d support recording all 4 sources into different wav files at the same time?

    Thanks for the informative video, any thoughts on doing one covering all of the DR-70Ds menu options and your opinions on each setting? One specific question is getting Dual-record to work with two mics (one being a 1/8 on-camera mic), any suggestions?

    • @DcSoundOp

      Hey Jeff, I think Sam Mallery pointed you in the right direction with his answer.Great question though, I'll quote Sam here for anyone else with the same question:
      "Hi Jeff. What you’re trying to do isn’t going to work. It states on Page 25 of the user manual that the Dual Recording feature only works when you’re recording a single stereo pair of channels. So, if you’re using Ext input 1/2 - that’s a stereo pair. If you try to add another channel, it won’t work." - www.sam-mallery.com/2015/09/tascam-dr-70d-review-how-its-useful-in-video-production/
      Thanks for the great comment! As for a video of all of the menu options... that would be quite a job! I'll keep that idea on the list though for a rainy day.

    Thank you for your guidance and love for making your videos. Few questions: How do I control the peak? What is the maximum peak so that distortion does not occur? If an actor needs to scream his lines for one scene, do you recommend using the limiter? And last but not least: I could set the year, but how about the date and month? Thank you so much.

    • @DcSoundOp
      @DcSoundOp  3 роки тому +1

      Thanks for the great questions. I tend not to record with limiters, but rather try to anticipate any screams that may happen and have the actor test prior to recording to know I'm safe. If you are having ongoing issues with dynamics and capturing a performance, you might consider going with a 32-bit floating point recorder like those from Sound Devices or like the Zoom F6 - You can read up about how those help with this issue here: www.sounddevices.com/32-bit-float-files-explained/
      For setting the date and month, you just need to push in on the DATA button after you set the year and you will be able to select those. You're looking for page 15 in the manual for the full instructions, but you were right next to it already. www.sounddevices.com/32-bit-float-files-explained/
      Thanks again for the questions & for watching!

    Hands down best review! I used mine yesterday on a shoot and was very happy. However, I can't figure out why there are 4 files for every clip, 2 of them being silent. • @DcSoundOp
      @DcSoundOp  7 років тому

      It sounds like you are trying to record two channels, but you have all four set to 'record' - I do briefly cover it in the video, and you just need to go into the settings for the two channels you don't need and set them to 'off' - let me know if this answers your question or if I've misunderstood what you're getting at. Thanks for watching, it's great to hear you found the video helpful!

    When I use my Panasonic handheld video camera HC-V770 with this Tascam DR-70D , if both are plugged into utility power instead of battery power, I get loud interference in my video recording on the memory card that is in the video camera. But if I unplug either unit and let one run off of battery, the sound in the video is crystal clear.
    Is this normal? is there something I can do to stop this in case my batteries are dead or I am making a long recording? On the audio only recording that is on the memory card in the Tascam DR-70D, the audio is fine, no issues or changes....
    Thank you for your feedback.

    Hi!
    Awesome video. As someone who is looking to purchase their first SR this is causing me a little bit of a headache haha. I was all set on the H5 or 6 and now came across this. As a matter of interest. Had you considered the H6 and if so what was your driver to lean towards the Tascam. They are pretty much the same sale price at the moment. Many thanks, Peter

    • @DcSoundOp
      @DcSoundOp  7 років тому

      Peter, thanks for the comment! I did consider the H6 for sure, and really only chose the Tascam for the form factor. The way it mounts and the way you connect to it, just work for my workflow and setup right now. I could honestly see myself buying a H6 in the future, as the options for swapping out the microphone elements and recording 6 tracks is VERY attractive for some projects.
      I don't think you'll go wrong with the H6 if that's what you've been looking at so far... the pack with the X/Y module, the dead cat & the shock mount for $389 looks like a great deal - amzn.to/2iFrug5 [use this affiliate link to help support the channel at no extra cost]

    Question for you as I'm just starting with the tascam dr 70 and have no sound background. I have a cardio Mic (Sennheiser MKE600) on chan1 and a lav on chan 2. Should I use phantom for my lav ? What should my gain be on each channel? Recording both in ext and interiors. Thank you for your answer

    • @DcSoundOp
      @DcSoundOp  7 років тому

      anne tzincoca Thanks for the question! I would imagine you do need phantom on the LAV, but you'll want to check your specific lav first to see if it needs it. I would start with the gain in the (mid) setting, which should be a good starting point for most professional mics in typical situations. Always aim to avoid clipping, you can always bring up the level later.

  • @zacgrimaldo

    What settings would I need to set to record from two different sources, like a boom mic and lav, and have them come out as two separate tracks of audio? Thanks in advance.

    • @DcSoundOp
      @DcSoundOp  7 років тому

      +Zac Grimaldo Zac, you'd want to make sure you have it set to mono recording. If you make a mistake and they come out as one stereo track, you can always separate them in editing. Feel free to shoot me an email if you need more details.

    Two questions:
    1. The system record the 4 audio separately, that means 4 audio tracks, or only one single audio?
    2. On the 60D there is the possibility, for each channel, to have two registrations, one normal and one with a reduced gain:is it possible here?

    • @DcSoundOp
      @DcSoundOp  3 роки тому +1

      Hi Simone - the DR-70 can record four separate tracks, but it does not have the feature for a safety track to be recorded automatically as you described. I'm not familiar with the current firmware though or any updates they have done recently, so it would be worth checking to see if they've changed anything since I did this video. Thanks!

    • @DcSoundOp

    Dunno if you still monitor this thread but does this unit have timecode at all. And I'd like to know a little more abut using the slate function. How does it work? Does it just blast a high pitch tone and the camera in built mics pick it up in proximity? Anyone can answer this. Thanks in advance.

    • @DcSoundOp
      @DcSoundOp  2 роки тому +1

      Hi John, thanks for the message. The DR-70d does not have any timecode abilities, you would want to look at the very similar DR-701d for that. The Slate function is just like you thought, it fires off a tone, but there isn't a speaker built in. You can use the DR-70's camera output to connect to your camera, or I've used headphones in the past to allow the camera's on-board mics to hear the slate. Not ideal, but manageable for small shoots these days.

When I transfer the wave files from the SD card to my computer, they play silent and do not appear to contain any waves, this happens regardless of whether I use a wave player or put them in the timeline of an sound editor. Yet, the files play inside the recorder. Please help. Thank you

      Wow, that’s a really unusual problem. I’ve never heard of anyone having this issue before, but out of curiosity, what version firmware are you running? It might also help to know what format you are recording in, what editors you’ve had this problem with, and if the files play in your computers file browser at all? If you have an example file, send it over to me @ dcsoundop@gmail.com and I’ll take a closer look.

    Good afternoon
    When I record with an external microphone, a DPA 4099B, there is a background noise, in the environment that is not removed.
    I have put the filter to remove that noise, but still continues.

    How can I solve that? Do you know?

      @DcSoundOp  5 років тому

      Hi Sebastian, I'm sorry I didn't see your comment sooner. I'm not sure what you are dealing with, have you identified where the noise is coming from? I'm interested to know what the noise is, what filter you tried. There isn't much in a simple recorder and DPA mic setup that will get rid of noise, they can only record what they hear in the environment.

      Hey, thanks for the questions! Off the top of my head, I'm not sure I've seen the WIDE option in place of PAN, but I'd be interested in knowing what you're looking at. Any chance you can snap a photo?
      My settings change from situation to situation, as yours likely will too. With the 875R, you'll probably want to turn on phantom power, set channel 1 to record, start with low gain and see where your signal lands. I'd typically set the high pass at 80 to start, and use the limiter if you're not sure you are completely safe with your levels staying consistent.
      If you have any specific questions, I'd be happy to help get your set-up.

Second, it is really hard to evaluate the issue this guy is claiming, when he isn't able to show the issue on camera. The one sequence he showed starting it up and the menu button not responding , was simply him not waiting for it to boot fully. This is a couple hundred dollar recorder, not a sound devices that boots instantly to previous settings. He could be having a real issue, but he hasn't done anything to convince me it's more than user error.

      so i just need to record and no post editing right, i just record and upload to youtube

    • @DcSoundOp
      @DcSoundOp  7 років тому

      That's going to depend so much on what you are recording... if it's something like spoken word, in a controlled environment, with minimal background noise, and you get the levels just absolutely spot on when you record, then yes it is possible.
      If you're working in less than ideal conditions then that, you'll often need to record a bit lower to leave headroom for any unexpected peaks to not clip and ruin your track. Then in post, you can safely bring the level up and do any other adjustments you may need.
      Going straight from recording to distribution would be a HUGE advantage, so I understand why you want to go that direction... but it's just not always possible.

    • @gabrielobrien21
      @gabrielobrien21 7 років тому

      If you're getting hiss it's because your gain is set much too high when recording. Recording at lower gain settings and raising the volume in post will greatly reduce this. I'm a video creator and a professional recording engineer. Feel free to hit me up about audio questions anytime.

      Gregors85 It sounds like you've got a few gain stage issues there. I use the DR-70 constantly & never have issues with level to the headphones or hiss on the line output.
      Without knowing what microphone you are using, and your settings from input to output... it's hard to say more, but you should be able to go step by step through the signal path and get better results with the proper settings for your purpose.

    how does this compare to the zoom h2n. Sound? Im looking to get this or the zoom

    • @DcSoundOp
      @DcSoundOp  7 років тому

      Hi, thanks for the question. I have only personally owned the Zoom H2 in the past, not the current H2N model, so I'd hesitate to make any comparisons on sound. I will say from a practical point of view, the H2 was a fantastic little recorder that I kept in my bag with me daily. The DR-70d has far more functionality, but is also larger and less convenient to always have with you.
      As always I think it's more a matter of which one fits your needs better. The difference in sound quality is likely negligible at this price, so I would look to which one fits your workflow at the moment.

      Thanks for the question. The R44 is very similar in specs & I doubt you would be able to tell the difference in sound quality in a blind a/b test. It has a bit more going for it on the back end with processing and featurs like the built-in de-esser, and some folks say the roland build quality is better than the Tascam units, but I think it's really going to come down to what fits your use best. Sorry I can't be more helpful.
