I''ll just say about "13 reasons why" - it had a tiny, but very vocal backlash - the majority of people thought it was exceptionally well done (including myself). For too long, depression and suicide have been ignored and swept under the carpet. The show did NOT glorify suicide by any means. The same type of people who thought it glorified suicide are the same type of people who think the Earth is flat, or Darwinian evolution is fake and believe in Biblical evolution.
I agree that awareness around mental health issues needs to increase. I think the show got people talking, but not in the way it could have been talked about or that was educational.
I stand by what I said, there were parts in the show that didn’t need to be included. They were graphic, triggering and too explicit for many people including myself. The suicide scene almost gives people instructions. I’m a huge advocate for mental health awareness/education but the show left me actually feeling sick.
Before you make a series/movie/sell a product or service you need to know who you are selling to. They knew their target audience would have primarily been 13-24 year olds. The younger end of that group don’t have the mental maturity for that content. I know it had ratings for 15+ and a content warning but we have to be realistic. These are the people who are accessing the show, they’re friends all talking about it.
Also, the storyline is about revenge and blame. Blaming suicide on other people doesn’t sit well with me.

@@laurenelloise Let's be realistic though Lauren - the dynamics of why man young people are taking their own lives are often hidden and swept under the carpet. Many youth are taking their own lives because of ongoing bullying, that the authorities are not even remotely interested in dealing with. I can imagine many younger people undergoing the same bullying that the main female character in the show went through.
The show copped a lot of hate and negativity from the US bible belt ('nuff said about those morons), but for the most part, many people, including Americans lauded the show. Was it graphical? Yes. I believe the intent was done to show the scene in question so that many youth saw how horrible it was - I did not find the show glorifying suicide etc. I found it very believable, very real, very person centred on what is a very difficult subject that is heavily ignored by the rest of society.
Suicide rates have massively increased over the past 50 years in all Western countries (across all age brackets), but in particular, youth suicide has massively risen. The topic MUST be discussed, and it must be openly, and frankly discussed amongst all avenues of society.
I was heavily bullied throughout my entire schooling, including by teachers. I had no one to help me. My parents didn't know how to deal with it, my friends didn't know what to do, teachers didn't care. I'm One of the lucky Ones, One of the survivors. I've had life long depression, at periods suicidal, I have a reasonably good grasp of the topic at hand.
