It's Howard Hawks' classic movie about pilots in South America. Jean Arthur and Cary Grant star as Americans, one a tourist and one an ex-pat, who witness the trials and risks of airline pilots delivering goods in hostile conditions. The movie has a smoky, snarky, romantic atmosphere reminiscent of Casablanca, and it was probably an inspiration for a great number of pilot and danger movies, including "Wages of Fear."
Why watch Only Angels Have Wings? This video reviews and analyzes the movie a little bit for you.

this movie is perfect. One of my favorites of all time. I love how Hawks can develop a lot of characters in a movie with less than 2 hours. The story is brilliant and i love all the characters
I agree -- really great. timeless, perhaps.
Thank you, Josh. I love this film.
you're welcome
Yes, absolutely one of the best. Thank you for giving the classic its due.
I really want to see this one. I love what Howard Hawks did with Bringing up Baby and His Girl Friday.
this one is sadder, though I think as I said, Grant is at peak snark.
@@LearningaboutMovies I love his use of dialogue and comedy. But I didn’t like the big sleep that much.
Ah, but that is Bogart.
@@OirichEntertainment ah cmon man how can you not like the big sleep? Try it again to see how you feel about it.
You forgot to mention Rita Hatworth!
thanks.
One of the airplane models from the movie, has survived, and was featured on "Antiques Roadshow"
no kidding? worth something?
@@LearningaboutMovies They said around $5000.
LITERALLY JUST FINISHED WATCHING THAT EPISODE OF ARS ..WHICH IS WHY IM HERE 😁
Great film! !939 was a banner year for Thomas Mitchell.
probably the greatest year for an actor ever.
@@LearningaboutMovies That is why I will being doing a special segment on The Golden Year on my page. It will segue-for pretty obvious reasons, into a section on politics.
A breakout role for Rita Hayworth!
Nice video. Jeff is really pushing it to help Dutchie out.
thank you.
This story was written about by Antoine de Saint,-Exupery in 1929.
THe nostalgic good-old-crew, those-days-are-long-gone atmosphere is unbeatable. I like this movie much more than Casablanca. No dis to Casablanca, personal taste.
it really does have similar vibes, doesn't it?
I love this movie, but can't compare to Casablanca.
@@judithmoore8692 I understand folks' appreciation of Casablanca, clearly an icon, once again, I do not try to present my taste as definitive opinion, it isn't.
It's got a great first 30 minutes but then it loses me. I dunno. The who's joe scene is spellbinding. Just never got around to liking cary grant in this. His girl friday and red river are my favourite hawks so far I think
totally reasonable.
Try this film again in a couple of months to see how like it
Why are these great old movies not made available? I can guess, something to do with the offerings emppty of story we're spoon-fed can't compete?
I was just on transatlantic flights on which there was a "classics" section with a couple dozen of these films, such as "The Desk Set."
I just wish that huge library was available on a routine basis. Possibly TCM, dunno, but not available in Europe. BTW, I forgot to say "Thanks for the post.". Thanks for the post, nice one.
you're welcome. I recommend the only way to do this: build your own library. Don't want the centralized tech companies owning and curating what's streaming.
@@LearningaboutMovies Your point is well taken, I will definiteltly take that under advisement. I'll be looking for a copy of "Only Angels have Wings" at my earliest. All best wishes to you and your family in this new year, mate. Hopefully things will better over the last couple.
