Jake, you're a scholar who uses digital media to tell his story. I've never come across a video of yours that hasn't made me feel good, and your reverence and passion for vintage racing is 2nd to none. You're responsible for my current addiction to RBR and I don't even know how many other sim racing vices you'll lead me down or lead me tot return to
I could've watched that introduction forever - it was that good. It wasn't hairs-on-the-neck-standing-up, it was so much more than that. You could almost feel the approving roar of all those drivers of the past, who'd striven and striven, risked life and limb, and left absolutely everything out there on the track to scrape by with a point, or in most cases nothing at all for their Herculean efforts; all the people who worked tirelessly on these machines, tinkering and toiling away into the wee hours and beyond. Your respect for them will not have gone unnoticed.
"To see how fantastic it is, to be average." Made me giggle. The intro is amazing man, you have a great way to tell stories. And the mod, it looks like getting the driver back to work.
Gotta be one of the top 10 anime Intros, right there. The cinematic display of the 49, T81, T70, and 917 was immaculate. The moment the T70 peeks out from behind the 917 and flicks its headlights on.....GOD DAMN.
Dude, the cinematography in this video is insane. The storytelling, the presentation, the passion, its all incredible and conveyed so well. Great job on the video.
This is my favourite mod the RSS has ever done. I drove it at Brands Hatch with the new wet weather from the custom shaders patch and it's the most fun I've ever had in simracing.
Love your work Jake . I believe this car holds the F1 track record at the old Spa circuit , set by Chris Amon in the Team March works entry . And also won the Race of Champions at Silverstone with Amon leading Stewart home . The car was as good , out of the box , as it would ever be , and the way Mosley + co. ran the company was dubious to say the least. Selling cars to whomever had the money , therefore diluting the effort to develop the car . They had only 1 team car and shared all of Amon's development data with whomever bought a car , which upset Amon so much . He had taken a chance to join March , based on Mosley's guarantee that he was team's focus . And then they shafted him totally , firing him for asking where his pay was . Mosley didn't have the balls to do it face to face , he waited till Amon came home for the Tasman Series , and announced it in a newspaper release . Absolute coward . Like father , like son .... I have always wondered how this car might have developed if it had been given a fair shake . But it wasn't meant to be , just another failed project . I met Amon at Hampton Downs at an event celebrating his career .The 701 was there ( looked awful , had been a static display for many years ) , and the way he talked about it was nostalgic , no rancour or hate for Mosley , just disappointment about the lost opportunity . How would we be discussing this car's record if they had allowed the development to happen ? Keep pumping out these fascinating tales . They are what makes you different to all other sim commentators , no one else looks at sim racing in the same way , your love of what you're doing shines through and is infectious . Thanks for the ride !!
Excellent video. Jake, I truly marvel at your ability to recount such rich history while doing a more than credible job at driving, lap after entertaining lap.
The March 701 was a cool also-ran, but I would’ve gone with the Matra V-12 because o’ the noise! A big reason I love vintage and historic racing is because the “also-rans” sometimes finally get their chance to kick butt!
This was Jackie’s favourite track, with good reason. I saw this car race in 1970 on its maiden outing and RSS have done themselves proud. It is a pity the 701 was too heavy, but the likes of Stewart and Amon kept it close to the front throughout the season.
OMG. I just download the car (I already had several other RSS cars and they're all great). This car is soooo addictive - especially on the tracks from that era. The sound through my headset and the sensations through the wheel puts you in the car how you imagine it would be. I've now downloaded most of the tracks from 1970. It's very hard to stop doing laps in this car, "just one more". Österreichring is particularly good; Spa is just plain scary to contemplate they raced there.
Someone really oughta get you a deal to create series about historical race cars. I really enjoy the sim racing portion as well, don't get me wrong. You really have a talent though to tell captivating stories about the history of these cars and finding things that average fans like myself might not be aware of and make it gripping and something that I'm interested to learn more in.
Totally agree with your assessment Jacob. It flummoxes me as to how people can drive thousands worth of folding stuff and yet complain about the purchase cost of such an excellent mod for less than the price of what I've drunk and smoked while watching your fine race. Great video man. Cheers.
Stunning video, one of your best (which is saying a lot!) intros for me - real goosebumps stuff. And perfectly captures something I often find immersion breaking in games; a field made of the ‘superstars’ and not the grid fillers. The stars are only the stars if there’s a strong supporting cast and this era has the perfect blend of competitive cars available to privateers to create beautiful, varied and competitive grids - the Porsche 906s to balance out the Ford GTs and P4s, these Marches to back up the Lotus and the T70s to challenge the McLarens, Porsches and Ferraris. Like you, I like putting myself in the shoes of an upstart privateer. Unlike you, I can’t explain or showcase my feelings with stunningly well written and produced videos! Thanks
Even though I am rubbish at driving them your videos ALWAYS make me want to load up the sim be it AC, AMS2, RF2 or what not and drive the cars and historic motors you feature. And that is the best compliment I think I can give.
as someone who's new to ac, this is why i like these videos. not only do i learn about historic cars i didnt know about. but also about the dedicated people that recreate them for simracers
Man the 70s era is an era I know very little about. I started a mini 70s championship with a great skin pack against AI on AMS2 last night, and I love driving them chimney cars but agree that they seem too forgiving. The immersion is epic in VR. Just hope they give us some more 70s tracks and cars.
Brilliant as always Jake . I find AC has the best FFB of all the Sims by quite way . Added to that the thousands of great mods , but RSS 1970 is right up there . I wish you would do more AC videos , as i love your passion and presentation . You revere and champion other sims , i understand this . But more AC please . Have a look at Oesterreichring 1979 on AC with RSS 1979 . Also a vintage onboard video of Ayrton Senna on the same track , courtesy of UA-cam , its amazing . Keep up the amazing work .👍👏
Nice! I like your videos a lot. Congratulations! I miss good 70s prototypes in AC, like the late versions of the 312 PB, the Matras, the Alfas T33 until the v12s, the 936s, the A442s... they are just awesome.
Following you since that infamous Ferrari dismissal in Monza... (do you remember that? when you tried your luck with Axelson in the 1965 GPL season), I watched a video of you again from beginning to end, a pleasure that things in life didn't allow me to enjoy for a while. And I leave here completely ecstatic! The content you create is an incredible journey! I started being your fan more than a decade ago and I increasingly like you and what you make available on the internet. PS. Any chance you can try online racing on the GPL again? We are running the 1967 season, both in the oAo League and in the UK/GPL Brasil League. It would be an honor to have you on the grid!
I find amazing how it doesn't matter if the game has bad AI, almost inexistent singleplayer quality... but it's modding community will always take you back into this sim. I've played more than 2000 hours and I will always be grateful to this community for this wonderful experience. Also, thanks to you, this content you make is peak youtube
Personally I think if you get a well made mod and track AC’s AI is… well, average! Can give really good racing without the opposition feeling unrealistic and bonus points for the immersion level of real opposition liveries, names, helmets and respective strengths. This Kyalami has a superb AI file on Racedepartment which makes it a lot more fun.
What a great review. I was always a shit simracer and now I have a kid so I do exactly zero driving, but I bought this mod sight unseen when it came out and I know it's going to give me a lot of fun any year now, haha. Fantastic runthrough, this is literally the only simracing channel I can watch.
Best vid yet. Thanks for the time you take to put these together. Love the car, proper seat-of-the-pants driving and it goes great around the Sud und Nordschleife too.
Great job, again!! I have fired up AC in at least 3 years, maybe longer. Can Am cars I ran last at AC. I’d like to see someone make the indy cars of the 70’s and tracks. Most were ovals in that time frame. The different cars many were hand made (Foyt) and everyone looked different. Miss those years as now we get the cookie cutter cars @indy
Shade thrown on the Lola T70....it won races, including 24hrs Daytona! And that's just coupe form, as spider it won Can-Am series for Surtees... Great video, I really should get a new PC so I can play this stuff
What does the rain-switch do? ;-) But seriously: What a legendary driver-lineup March and it's customers had in 1970: Jackie Stewart, Chris Amon, Mario Andretti, Jo Siffert, Ronnie Peterson and François Cevert! It would be great to have a whole set of cars and tracks to recreate the 1970 season.
You missed some details...you can lift the driver visor, you can see fuel flow into the carbs, you can see suspension parts vibrating. 4 different aero packages, visual and functional. This mod proves there is a lot more capability with Assetto Corsa than we thought. Skins for all the teams in 1970 are on Race Department, including helmets.
We could all do with a modern day equivalent of the March 701 in today's F1 right now - it would be a hell of a lot more enjoyable, especially with the Ford Cosworth DFV V8 MEGAWEAPON soundtrack.
The sidepod aero was unproven back then, but these days it is acknowledged as the very first Ground Effect Formula 1 car ever built! They did tests with Mario Andretti without the sidepods and the car handled much worse! There is a German video from the magazine „Auto Motor & Sport“ where they talk about all the ground effect eras in F1 and there they talk about the 701 ground effect. Very interesting!
Once again - SO fun! Makes me think I should just forget all my dreams of owning a (real) great driving car and put my limited money into a simulator and some of these virtual classics.
Unpopular opinion: The V8 Cosworth DFV was the best sounding F1 engine of all time. Just raw naturally aspirated reliable power firing on all 8 cylinders. Yea, the later V12s and V10s sounded awesome, but the V8 DFV is by far the heartiest...
It's one of the best cars in sim racing, not just AC. Sounds are addictive. If March had just used side fences on the pods, they could have discovered ground effects 8 years before Chapman. Also, the AI racing with this mod is better than any Kumos car. Mods need more driver animations.
Doesn't it just figure that (in GPL, anyway) my favorite '67 F1 car is the T81 and my favorite '67 Sports Car is the T70MkIIIb? Haven't picked a favorite from the '66 Can Am set yet; it's LoPeN's current series, and I've tried the Olds-powered Genie Mk10, the small-block Chevy T70MkIIs, the Chaparral 2E, and the big-block Ford T70MkII -- may try one of the McLaren-Elvas at Road Atlanta this week.
Great video and awesome intro 😃 you could make a whole series of good not greats (or nearly greats). Got me thinking: 88 Leyton House March, first Jordans (more looks than performance), 88 F1 Ferrari, 2004 BAR, Lancia LC2, Metro 6R4. Though , now I've typed this, I realise you need a version in a sim. So that makes it a much bigger challenge. ☹️
The LC2 is in some ways rather memorable and because of its pedigree in relation to the 288 GTO and F40 not exactly anonymous - but the LC1 otoh would be a real treat. Or the Ford C100. My personal choice though: literally every group 5 car not named ‘935’…
If you search Kyalami 1967 (it’s not really 67 but that’s its name) you’ll find it. There’s a skin and AI file on RD to bring out its prettier and more competitive side.
Great video and story as usual! I'd be interested in knowing how you get the perfect (I'm guessing) NeckFX and right left glance settings used in the video. I've never gotten them to look so natural. Thanks
What I want to know is what that thing hanging off the back of the car is. The fuel tank? It looks like one of those large milk cans you can find around dairy farms.
I know you got caught up with the racing so didn't finish your thought, but yes, the Lotus 49 and other superfast cars aren't too fun to dance on a knife edge, but a safer, softer, more neutral car is masses of fun to chuck around.
Great video. Sounds very promising, but I’m not ready to pay for a sim and piece meal add on content that can’t replicate a full authentic grid. Pay a $4-$5 per car and by the time you’re done it’s more expensive than a full sim and you can’t be sure if it gets there and is worth it. We need a new full sim dedicated to the historic era out of the box
Can you imagine what would have been if they added end plates to those aero foil shaped fuel tanks? It would basically be the Lotus 78. As they were tho I doubt they were producing much downforce if any at all.
I have played GPL since it came out in 98 but not for the last few years. It looks stunning now. How could a system would I need to really do the modern updates justice?
@@larryhaines7109 ah right. I have AC on my PS4 but guess most sim racers use desktops or high end laptops. My acer was good in its day but feel i need an upgrade if I want to even tun the latest updates for GPL let alone AC. Our potatoes dont have enough chips. Lol
@@kuroneko9270 Thanks. I wont pretend to know what most of those terms mean. Still, i may just get a version of AC to see how it works. I have had to order a new copy of GPL. Mine has gone missing so when I get that I will reinstall everything and take it from there. I know a laptop us never going to be as good as a desktop but it is infinitely more practical for me.
Ok Jake i’m sold! It’s been like 3 years since i don’t fire up AC anymore but i’m giving this a try! Apart from buying the mod and performing a vanilla AC install, what else do i need? CSP patch and tracks from racedepartment? Thanks!
I've got two questions. 1 - does the original Kyalami circuit, with much narrower track width, exist in any sim? 2 - is the documentary you referred to called "One by One"?
@@GPLaps 'Champions Forever' is almost 'One by One'. The documentary was released three times with different titles and slightly modified content. 'One by one' was the first title in 1975 for the cinema release, then it was called 'The quick and the dead' for it's VHS release in the late 70's, and finally 'Champions Forever' for the DVD release.
Happy I found this on my front page. I just found my notifications turned off. WTF I was waiting for your HRRC race Aidan told me was coming I didn't turn notifications off. Fargin Icehole bastages youtube.

I've put in a lot of miles in with this mod since it's release and it's definitely in my top 3 mods for AC.

Looks great. I need to look into that. Thanks 😊
Great ! Thanks !
Jake, can you make a video showing what mods you installed in your RBR?
Hello gp laps. Wonderful video as always.
Make me wonder how racing in this time were.
Can you say which pp filter are you using?
Thanks
Please make this a series
Should make this a series
Is anyone else having an issue where the tire texture is not loading in-game? My tires are black cylinders.
Sugestions are welcome. Thanks guys.
I have played GPL since it came out in 98 but not for the last few years. It looks stunning now. How could a system would I need to really do the modern updates justice?
The sim in this video is not GPL, it is Assetto Corsa. But to answer your question, pretty sure the you can still run "modern" GPL on a potato.
Thanks!
In the intro what is the red car with the No.61 on it?
How does this compare to the 1970s F1 mod in rF2?
It is the ‘Nardi Bisiluro’

@@GPLaps Great thanks :)
Great video as usual! Is this the Race Department "Kyalami" download?
Is the "rain" switch flicked on when it rains?
Lotus Esprit at 1996 BPR GT1 comes to mind. The mod is not good, sadly.
Is that the fuel tank standing upright at the rear of the car 🤨
No, that's the oil tank (or churn). The fuel is stored much closer to the driver :) either side of him, in the sidepods and right behind the seat.
@@vrsimracer Thanks, that seems an awfully big oil tank!
I've got two questions.
1 - does the original Kyalami circuit, with much narrower track width, exist in any sim?
2 - is the documentary you referred to called "One by One"?
Not sure ive ever seen the early version anywhere, would be nice, especially for gpl! And the documentary is called ‘Champions Forever’

Do you race in VR or is this RealHeadMovement? If RHM, could you share your settings?
I used Trackir in this video
Are you using head tracking or a look-to-apex mod?
Can you do full distance A.I racing on Assetto Corsa?
Is this car great with clutch?
Wich screen recorder do you use
OBS!
What Track is That? Beautiful !!!!
Kyalami 1967 but there’s an AI file on RaceDepartment which is basically essential for good racing here
