Just ordered the mieke version of this lens and after seeing this I think I made the right decision. I don’t think the 7A is brighter as you mentioned a couple of times, it looked more like it was a lack of contrast and a bit washed out. The mieke had much nicer colours and more contrast.
7artisans seems to have more pixie-dust and unicorn stuff in it's insides. It is technically way worse than my Fuji XF 35mm f/1.4 if looking just pure performance, but still the images it produces have something special in them. It is cheap, extremely pleasant to use and focus, has great build quality (for the price), is really, really small and has a very pleasant look in it's images. And finally, I don't care much about the corners as they are oof anyways most of the time. Couldn't recommend it more. ;)
I was going to wait for this video before making my decision. But I went ahead and bought the 7Artisans. Have been using it for a month or so and I'm very happy with it. The images were clean and sharp. Assigning Focus Magnifier to C1 button helps a lot with focusing. Great in low light environment. Used it in a few b/w street photography sessions, very happy with the result. A previous video mentioned this lens has red flare. Using a hood pretty much solves the problem. Have not used any Meike lens before, but I would still recommend the 7Artisans.
Thanks for the great reviews! I’d love to see one comparing some of these inexpensive new production manual lenses vs vintage lenses, like the Canon FD series.
The 7Artisans lens is really softer overall. That portrait side by side really shows it's too soft (by my eyes at least). I think the Neewer is better.
Thanks for the comparison! I would also pick the 7 artisans also for that f1.2 aperture. The ability for the lens to capture more light is always welcomed when taking pictures in low light conditions.
Just got my Sony A6500 with the 18-105 lens. It seems like another expensive and addicting hobby of mine just like sim racing, PC building and gaming and motorsport.
Quite true. Though depends how much really you constantly spending on new gear or upgrades. PC building is only expensive initially when building a PC, and the specs are dependent to your needs and wants. After that, the spending is not that much unless you always spend on buying expensive new games or software way too often. Photography, you can start cheaper but the more you want to expand to Photography, the more expensive the gear you may have. Though eventually you may stop buying or slow down on buying a new gear.
great video, I bought the Neewer version of the lens way back when you first made a review for it and I am very happy with it, and I think that since the artisans lens just is not a killer over the Neewer, I'll just stick with the Neewer, "if it ain't broke don't fix it"..lol..and save the money....love your videos;;;;;
Nice review. 7artisans looks like a good option. I already have the Neewer though, so I'll keep it. Love the 25mm 7artisans lens. It's one of my favorites. I've been trying lots of vintage lenses, thanks to your review of the Helios a while back. :)
Kimberly M. Yes the Helios is great. I won mine from this channel so that makes it better too! I just have to get used to the switched aperture and focus rings.
Another great video, thanks for helping make my lens decisions easier for my A6300. Would you consider making a video on how you focus your videos and photo's with your sony alpha cameras. Keep up the really good content
I think I will keep my Meike 35mm. The bokeh is not much different. Yes more light. But the very annoying thing is smeared corner. If I crop the corner, it will be like 40mm or more. And with extra $60? I will live with Meike, even though it is less sharp than 7artisans in the center. Anyway thanks for this comparison. It holds me to buy the 7artisans 35mm 1.2. Have a nice day mate.
@@defitarossasandriananaseer4060 for now I keep my 7artisans 35mm f1.2 since it more compact and faster. Will sell my meike. And also 7artisans got more contrast and character than meike.
The Neewer lens looks like a normal apsc lens. Getting f1.7 35mm for like $70 is hard to beat and it works. But the 7artisans looked much better at 1.7, and it has that 1.2 there if you need it. It's like spinal tap, it can go to 11 when you need to. The corners thing is a little weird, but at 35mm you should have some room to crop anyway. Which makes me think this will be one helluva m4/3 lens. It solves all the problems in the corners and m4/3 cameras need more light.
A couple of days ago I ordered a bellows for my A6000 to play around with doing some macros. Waking up this morning I suddenly realized that I would need some sort of manual lens .... and I did not have one. so you just sold a 7artisans 35mm F1.2.
Hi Arthur, I really like your channel and content, keep up with the cheap lens review, not only the newer expensive glass. On this regard, very important tip: If you want to test sharpness, vignetting and others. Get a tripod and shoot some test charts instead. Although we appreciate the effort on making this shots, it's not going to show clearly anything if the shots are miss-focused, moving subjects or moving background. Thanks!
I buy the Meike (or Neewer) 35mm F/1.7, yes its budget friendly manual focus lens, good for portrait with smooth bokeh. But's it's a manual lens, not recomended for taking quick shot. Using the lens 3 times on vacation, and I'm sold it. Manual lens not for me. Using manual lens takes a time to focus, and my wife can't use this lens to take a pictures, all ended with blurry focus. I decided to buy Sony 35mm F/1.8 later, and I'm very satisfied with this lens, very quick focus and no need to rotate the ring for focusing. ;)
Great video - I leaning toward the 7Artisans for my Fuji setup, but I've also noticed there's a 35mm f2 coming soon from 7Artisans too - in Leica M mount, with a proper focus tab!
I wondered when you'd do these two! Great job as always, dude. I'd go with the 7artisans as well. Having the Sigma 30 and the Sony 35, I probably won't ever go after it, but I always love being knowledgeable about them...
Do you ever take calipers to actually measure the aperture? I ask because between 1:45-2:00 you show the aperture openings on both and the 7artisans is a claimed 1.2, but the aperture opening, despite being the same focal length, appears smaller. Furthermore, at 3:30 when you show the shots of the 7artisans at 1.2 and 1.7 side by side, the images look identical aside from a lack of sharpness on the 1.2. Curious if that 1.2 really measures at a 29mm opening to validate that 1.2 claim.
The aperture is measured from the front. You measure the opening of the aperture as how you see it from the front. Now look at both lenses from the front again (1:04), the 7artisans has clearly a much bigger opening so it has a lower aperture number. Nothing wrong there. The images at 3:30 look the same, but one is shot at 1/800s and one at 1/1000s so it is very clear that its letting more light in at f1.2. Nothing wrong there too.
MrPaulrt thanks for explaining. Why is 1.7 bigger from behind? Seems quite a bit bigger, does that mean it would fit on FF or atleast have less vignetting? Not that i have FF but it is interesting..
No comment on the swirly bokeh on the first image? Its an effect you get with some sought after CCTV lenses and some old old oldschool lenses from the past. It looks dreamy, but not something you want on all your photos.

I've been thinking to replace my cctv 35mm f1.6 lens with something better. This review is just what I need. Thanks.
Hi, Actually, looking at 7artisans - Sigma 30mm f2.8 is pretty close in price, has autofocus, no vignetting, and it's one of the sharpest lenses wide open. I would say I would recommend that more compared to the 7artisans. Meike is good if you are on a REALLY tight budget.
Sigma is on another league. It is autofocus, writes exif data, it's lighter (OK it's close at140 vs 150), has better colors, sharper across the frame even at 2.8, nearly no vignetting and chromatic aberrations and nearly no flaring.. Speed isn't everything (if you really need speed as well, save for the Sigma 1.4)
TechnologyMafia That is absolutely true, but my blind guess is, even if you stop these down to 2.8, Sigma would be sharper wide open. Also, having a fast lens is awesome, but having a shallow depth of field will mean, you will miss the focus a lot. Imagine you would use these for street photography - even for experienced people it can easily happen, that you miss focus 4 out of 10. Anyhow, I'm a huge fan, please continue what you are doing, it's extremely valuable. Cheers from Hungary

Hello, can you please make a comparison video of the Neewer f1.7 35mm lens with new sony 18-135 lens or with the 16-50 kit lens? Thank you for your nice videos, I am an avid follower of your videos. :)
I just got a neewer 85 1.8 for 7$ brand new I can't find any good review for it :( I use Sony apsc it's for Canon so I ordered an adapter I'll have to wait a few days for
do you think that those cheap prime lenses have better image quality than the 16-50mm kit lens? Does it worth or should I save to buy an expensive lens later?
TechnologyMafia actually I'm thinking to get a wide and a wide/normal lenses (something like 12mm and 25mm. Maybe only one or maybe both). What would you suggest for video? Your reviews for the Sony 16mm and 20mm didn't convince me much and the Sigma 19mm either because it's expensive for not being able to use its auto focus. Any chance to have a video comparing cheap lens with those Sony and Sigma on the next week? My girlfriend is going to the USA and it's very expensive to buy in Brazil. It's a good opportunity because my budget is low
Arthur R hi, I have a Sony a5000 primarily for my photography when fishing. I want a 35mm 1.8 lens to get the blurry background, but I won't be able to manually focus it when I'm holding a fish for instance so what would I need to do this the most cheap way? Would it be getting say a Nikon lens and s cheap adapter?
Hi technology mafia, I am recently using a6500. Since, your reviews are the best, I watched so far, do you think the Sony FE 85 mm 1.8 would be a good choice for a6500? I have noticed, that a school of thought believes that full frame lenses do not work it's best on a crop sensor body. What do you think???
Hi! I love your channel and always refer for your reviews and comparisons all the time. I was wondering if you ever considered doing a lens favorites for your different camera bodies? I have the a5100 that I use for vlogging and traveling with it because my lenses are much smaller for that and the a6300 as well that I use for higher quality video and pictures. I was looking for a better quality lens for the a5100, but I'm scared to make an investment on a more expensive lens for my a5100 and it not match up to the quality of the camera (if that makes sense). Is there a specific lens that you would recommend for the a5100 for portraits and vlogging purposes more than others? Thanks a ton!!!
Do you like to use manual assist, peaking level, and/or zebra stripes with manual focus lenses on your a6000? I don’t own a f/1.2 lens, so I’m not sure how accurate the focus needs to be for things like portraits when it’s wide open.
I use focus peaking and zoom in to focus. You do have to be very precise with F1.2 because the focal plane is very slim! Eyes in focus where as the nose will be out of focus, etc.
dude what just happend to sont on amazon?? i went to get the sigma 16 mm and its NOW $600 where i saved it and everywhere and the A6500 dropped to $1,298 !!!! this is crazy right after i got my camera....i need the sigma 16mm if you sell your lol $400
Hello technology mafia do you plan to review some not expensive telephoto lens in a range of 85-135 prime soon?? It would be super nice as Sony apsc line up lack of cheap lens in that range 😊👌
TechnologyMafia i do have the 55-210 and a 55 7artisans but nothing between so I took a look of lenses with adapters on the website of PhillipReeve.net there is some review for a7 fullframe like the Minolta 2.5 100md with adapters but on native E-mount it’s really the desert under 400 US dollars, I m still searching...😅

I just pulled the trigger on an A6000. Whats your favorite lens for shooting cars, and car assorted stuff?
18-105G if you can swing it. If not, the kit lens does fine at 16mm. If you are looking for amazing, try the Sigma 16mm or the Sony 35mm.
The 7artisans looks like industar 50-2 lens when mounted on the camera. It gives kind of vintage feels.

The Takumar is a 50mm, so that's something completely different.

I see the opposite, but I think it's just brightness.
do you think that those cheap prime lenses have better image quality than the 16-50mm kit lens? Does it worth or should I save to buy an expensive lens later?
Yes, the quality is better, but I would recommend saving up for a Sigma 30mm F1.4 or Sony SEL 35 F1.8.
Would it be getting say a Nikon lens and s cheap adapter?
if you can also try the fujian 35mm 1.6 v2 😫
Can i use these lens on a rebel T5i ? thanks for your time.
I think it will work well, I am thinking about picking that lens up next to try it out.
TechnologyMafia I am looking forward to your FE 85 mm f1.8 review. I am sure it will be very informative, as always!
TechnologyMafia you could compare it to Samyang/Rokinon 85
can you compare the Sony 30mm f3.5 Micro VS 7Artisan 35? Thanks!
Two very different lenses for different purposes, the Sony 30mm macro is sharper, has autofocus, and can get you some crazy close ups.
Hi, just a quick question, were all these pics taken using the focus peaking feature?
Yes, they were.
Which is better for action photography like jumping people
Distorted corners turn me off
I have got only 7artisans at my place, and the specs are totally the same as Neewer.
7artisans 55mm f1.4 please!!
aditya pratama That one is ordered and on the way!
TechnologyMafia aah, and samyang 85mm t1.5 mkii cine lens please 😁 thank you
Can't wait for the that review. I think only few people review it but nothing comprehensive.
Would like to see a comparison between 7artisans 55mm f1.4 and Sony 50mm f1.8 OSS. Thanks!
Is it only for apsc? Do I need to crop using it on the sony a 7s ii?
dude what just happend to sont on amazon?? i went to get the sigma 16 mm and its NOW $600 where i saved it and everywhere and the A6500 dropped to $1,298 !!!! this is crazy right after i got my camera....i need the sigma 16mm if you sell your lol $400
Blitzcreeg Media Did you try the B&H link? It is in stock for $450 last time I checked.
damn i cant type..i swear i speak proper english ahaha
Is it possible for you to review the rololight neo 2? Plzzzzzzzz
I will look into it!
thank you love your work
TechnologyMafia i trust u way more than Jason lanier
Not sure what you were looking at Neewer kecked the Artisan all over the park.
why does everyone pronounce neewer wrong? its nee wer not newer.
I think because Nee-wer sounds a bit dumber, same way when someone pronounces Zhiyun as zhee-yoon when it's Joo-wen
Finally!!!
Hello technology mafia do you plan to review some not expensive telephoto lens in a range of 85-135 prime soon?? It would be super nice as Sony apsc line up lack of cheap lens in that range 😊👌
Do you have any recommendations? There are almost no cheap E-mount lenses in that range.
