      Javier Berjon Thank you. What kind of literature are you looking for - textbooks or other non fiction?
      Re your question - in practice, once we’ve unravelled the concept, it definite seems redundant. But considering how popular the term is, we risk confusing people if we discard or replace it. I think this understanding of Geopolitics is more at a specialist level, for making our analysis.

    Does the definition of Geopolitics encompass how physical space can effect political power? For instance would the statement: Russia has natural borders in the Ural Mountains, Carpathian Mountains, Atal Mountains, Sayan Mountains, and Stanovoy Range; be a Geopolitical analysis?

    • @Geopoliticus
      @Geopoliticus  5 років тому +1

      Athena Absolutely. When analysing physical space we are fundamentally looking at the ‘texture’ of elemental space, ie its degree of ruggedness or smoothness. Mountains in borderlands are highly rugged space, which makes them geostrategically very important. They are ‘natural’ borders because rugged space makes movement difficult, as opposed to smoother space. Consider how the geopolitical history of mountainous regions differs from the history of the steppes of the Eurasian heartland.
      The physical nature of space also determines the geoeconomic and geotechnical capacities of societies. That is, the nature of Terrain will determine what resources are available and what technologies are needed to extract them. The analysis of space, especially in terms of inter relationships as I mentioned, should be the first step in any geopolitical analysis.

    • @Geopoliticus
      @Geopoliticus  6 років тому +1

      Nader Nourbakhsh Thank you for your comment. Ultimately the human factor is the most important. If we reduce the component parts of this definition to their most basic level - the human factor is what we are really talking about.
      I would recommend this video: ua-cam.com/video/nbNxLeVmXqY/v-deo.html
      It requires patient viewing but I have addressed this.

      @nadernourbakhsh5580 6 років тому +1

      Thank you, below is a comment by Prof. Mirheydar: Dear sir, I appreciate your presentations about definition of the term geopolitics. However, my concern is this, if we put geographic space instead of physical space( what you call world) as the basis of your definition the problem is solved. For, as you know the geographic space is the result of human interaction with physical space and a very important factor in power distribution in the world. And, if we accept this,the prefix of geo stands for geography .

  • @raymungusray6664
    @raymungusray6664 4 роки тому +11

    I think what @Spencer Morgan was getting at is, you don't actually present any practical information to the audience. It feels like you are trying to present an over complicated theory based on loose definitions. Geopolitics does not really sit well as a theory considering it is a practice or an activity, basically it is a series of actions and behaviours by international actors, if you will. Additionally, you state definitions and force links or conclusions from them without actually presenting logical inferences. For example, your video states: "politics typically concerns itself with two questions: Power (and who gets to decide this) and Distribution (of who gets what, where, when and how)". This statement is broader than the sun. "Typically" is a subjective term and an awful one when used for defining something. Whose power do you mean? What kind of power? And distribution of what exactly? The power? Again what is this power? Resources? Money? Military strength? Energy? Magic?
    Geopolitics isn't really a study, as I said its more of a practice. The study of geopolitics is one thing and what geopolitics actually means is something quite different. Studying geopolitics is basically saying you study international relations (which is an independent field of study) of which geopolitics plays a big part but is not exclusive to.
    Personally, I think geopolitics is the behaviour and activity of the state and/or decision-maker (politicians) as dictated by the geography that said state or decision-maker controls or seeks to control.
    I wish you had added some practical examples which would have really improved your video. For example, the cause and effect of the Malacca Strait on Chinese energy dependence (i.e. the belt and road initiative). The enormity of the US inland river system and the effect it had on propelling the US economy ahead of Europe by an order of magnitude in a fraction of the original time. The overwhelming dependence on the Nile River by several North African countries, which is largely controlled by Egypt. The isolating effect the Zagros and Alborz Mountains have on the Iranian agriculture industry. Australia's dependence, as an island nation, on secure sea lines of communication. Other examples include the German Rhineland, the Eastern European Plateau, the three quarters of Russia which are virtually uninhabitable, the Suez canal, the Bosporus Strait, Crimea, etc. All of these geopolitical situations have at one time or another led states to go to war with, negotiate with, submit to, conquer or destroy each other. This is what I was getting at by wanting useful information; the knowledge that a state's geography, including all the resources it can control, can and ultimately will dictate a state's behaviour toward other states.
    I also agree with everyone else on UA-cam, you need a voice over. The only way I could watch your video, without being distracted by a speck of lint I found on my T-shirt, was to watch it at 1.75x speed. Speed that text up man! If I can't listen to it, can I at least read it at a speed relative to average human intelligence? Ditch or change the music. Good luck and peace out man.

    Well, no. Geopolitics is specifically the relationship of geography to politics. It's not just about power, but about how geographical location and resources contribute to political power. It originates with Halford Mackinder, Brit, and Nicholas Spykeman, American, who were influenced by Rudolf Kjellan, Swede, who was influenced by Friedrich Ratzel, German.

      Spencer Morgan What do Geo-graphy and politics mean though?

    • @spencermorgan675
      @spencermorgan675 5 років тому +1

      @@Geopoliticus You are pulling my leg, right? You are grabbing at straws if you sincerely believe that the etymology of words is the best way to understand the meaning of contemporary usage. Words originate and then develop and morph into other meanings than that from which they originate. For example, my kids say things are "awesome". The origin of that word is the same as "awful" so the first is some awe, while the second is full of awe? No, of course not. "Politics" originates with the Greek word for "City" or Polis. Does that mean that politics only concerns cities? Well, again, of course not. Seriously, if you're going to lecture about Geopolitics then set aside etymology and study Mackinder, Ratzel et al. Best wishes!

    • @Geopoliticus
      @Geopoliticus  5 років тому +2

      Spencer Morgan Well, in your first comment you mentioned: Geopolitics is about how geographical location and resources contribute to political power.
      If you want to criticise someone, you first have to engage with their argument - in totality. Don’t just throw a few names around.
      This comment now is for the benefit of all who are reading.
      Geopolitics is about ‘geographical location’ you said - and what is geographical location, how is it identified geographically: through our framework of ‘space and scale’.
      Geopolitics is about ‘political power’: what is political power? Since we are talking about Geopolitics in the context of the international system, we classified political power as : sovereignty, economics, technology and geostrategy.
      If we’re doing Political Science, which Geopolitics ultimately draws from, we’re absolutely committed to definitions (not etymologies).
      Again, if you want to find a problem with my argument, please go ahead. Vague claims to authority are futile.
