- K1P1 Rib Stitch for Beginners. Use k1p1 in Hats and Scarves. It's a common stitch pattern used in all sorts of knitting projects. This video assumes you can already do a Cast On, Knit Stitch and a Purl Stitch. If you are unsure about those knitting stitches, please check below for links to tutorials showing only those steps. Begin with the knitted Cast On and then right into the Knit stitch. Practice just the casting on and knitting parts first and then when you feel confident, move on to purl stitch.

Oh good!! I'm so glad it was helpful! If you get confused again, run the video while you're knitting. I go slower and knit several rows so you can knit with me and the get the hang of it!
@@PattymacMakes Patty you said to Knit the knit stitches and Purl the Purl stitches. However, I could be so confused. You ended the row with a Purl. Turned your work and started with a knit. 😮. Mind Blown. You knitted a Purl stitch.... No?
I'm doing this currently and I'm not getting ribbing. I'm getting like a seed stitch. I could pull my hair out. It's almost 3am. Any thoughts to straighten me out?? Much appreciated 👍
I’ve made two scarves with basic knit stitch and I have been trying to find videos where it explains these stitches together, and yours is by far the best I’ve found. Some people work so fast and don’t explain well. This was just what I needed. Now I can start making my scarf 🧣😊
I'm so happy to hear this was helpful for you!!! I was frustrated with the same issues as you describe when I was learning. So I made these tutorials in the same way as when I teach in person. I do have other basic stitches in the tutorials so you might want to take a look. Seed stitch is very pretty pattern for a scarf and it will lay flat like garter stitch does. if you knit in ribbing it will scrunch up so keep that in mind.

Thank you for this. I was working on an afghan square that uses K1 P1 for the border, and it looked all wrong. I felt so defeated and stupid. After ten rows of horrible, ugly stitches I ripped the whole thing apart and searched for answers. In none of the videos that I used to teach myself had anyone specified that the yarn is passed OVER the needle when you switch stitches. I was passing it under. THANK YOU for clarifying this problem for me!
I'm really happy it was explained in a way that made sense for you Melly! Please never feel stupid about this. We all learn differently and sometimes finding the right combination of words and pictures that help us understand can be hard to find. Always remember the yarn is behind the work for knit stitches and in the front for purl stitches.
I kept passing the yarn under too for the knit stitch and video definitely cleared it up!

So nice to show the basics. So helpful, and you have a great teaching style. I"ve made a few Items: hats, and a scarf, etc. and did a few things in my teens. Every time I pick it up, I love it, but now even more, as I've taken to the "Norwegian style" of knitting/purling, and wow, it's so easy, and I don't have to move my yarn forward and back., and there's less movement. My old hands appreciate it. lol. Took some time to learn how to hold the needles and yarn, and use the needle size for guage, and there's no tension needed. There's a place for everything. Thank you so much Lynn! The yarn is Thick and Quick from Lion Brand. My favorite craft store brand and line. My friend has been knitting Norweigan as well and loves it. To be honest, I don't knit all that much anymore, so I still do plain old English throwing and it's fine for what little bit I do. I do mostly sewing and quilting at this stage, though I do still enjoy a little knitting here and there. I've got a hat on the needles I need to get finished. I have to find my stitch markers to do the crown decreasing so that's held me up. I can't remember where I put them. 😂I appreciate the kind comment and I'm really happy you enjoy my contribution to the wacky world of youtube.

I would suggest turning the music down in future as it does kind of mess with my concentration - but otherwise I did just fine with this. I needed to know how to do a k1p1 on DPNs and I was able to follow with no trouble, given I already know how to knit and purl - just needed help knowing how to swap between the two.
Thanks for the feedback, Cara. DPNS are generally for knitting in the round, and this is a flat knitting project. I use those needles in my demos because they are short and I need short needles to position the work flat on a table for the camera. I don't have a tutorial for knitting in the round with dpns, because I don't use them, personally. I prefer magic loop for my in-the-round projects. I'm glad this was helpful for you! I don't know what to say about the music. Some people like it and some don't. I'm trying to do something different from everyone else with my channel, so I use upbeat music to differentiate. Otherwise, I'm just doing the same thing that's already on here on a 100 other channels. Does that make sense? We are supposed to be different and unique to stand out, so I do a lot of my videos without talking and more music. It would be a really dry video for me to show knitting with no music bed behind it. Nobody would watch 5 minutes of just knitting and no other sound.

I was getting the front to back yarn turn all wrong and I cannot even explain what was happening 😂 I just knew it was very VERY wrong 😂
Oh Sandra!! I completely understand!! I was also really confused until I started saying yarn in front and yarn in back. Once you do it a few times you get the hang of it! Have fun and good luck!
This looks easy then when I do it I get muddled 😅
It just takes time to get used to doing it! This is why I recommend using that grey super bulky yarn to learn with. You can see your work easily and the size is easier to handle. Once it clicks, you'll be able to do it without even thinking!

Do you end with P1 or K1? Or does it matter?
I generally end with a Purl, but if you are grafting knitted fabric together, you might want to go with a knit stitch to make the grafting easier.
i wasnt moving the yarn to the front and back. messed up my projects real bad and didnt know why
I hope this helps!!! Yes that yarn in front for purl and yarn in back for knit is often glossed over. If you say it to yourself as you knit a sample, it will really help!!
Whenever I try to k1p1, I keep ending up with some weird stitches 😭 Yes, I bring the yarn in front and then in back and I still end up with weird stitches 😭 Is tension the problem or the size of the needles?
There's no way of answering that question without seeing the work, unfortunately. Are you changing the way you insert the working needle, the needle in your right hand in the loop? It's more than just bringing yarn front to back. It's also the way the working needle is inserted into the loop. Also...it's how you are looping the working yarn. The yarn has to be looped in correct direction around the working needle. You can slow down the speed of the video and match what you're doing exactly. I hope that helps!!! Once you get it, you get it, so don't give up!

Ugh, I just did it correctly, I think I wasn't holding the working yarn correctly when I was doing the knit stitch, I was holding it more down than up, if that makes sense. I was inserting the working needle properly, so that could be the only problem. Oh well, I did it, thank you so much for your help 😁
@@KS-pi6ef OK!!! It's hard to really know when I can't see it, but those are usually the things that mess people up. Use the slower motion feature if you need it and stop and go back as needed. Once you get it, the muscle memory is there and you won't need the tutorial anymore!! I'm glad it seems to have helped.
Ugh wish I found this video before I started attempting K1 P1… wasted hours cus I had to redo the whole thing anyways. Knitting is hard
I totally gets better!! Once you develop the muscle memory for the stitches, you'll find it much easier. And to be honest, I messed up stuff for hours and hours learning how to do it. That's just part of the learning process.
Why didn’t you slip the first or last stitch to prevent curling edges? What do you do when edges curl?
This was just to show k1p1 not slip stitches. It would still curl because that's just the nature of this stitch pattern. Garter will lay perfectly flat, but until you soak and block a rib stitch on the flat knit, it's going to curl. I do have scarves in thin k1p1 and they are beautiful once I wet block them. Pretty new to knitting! I’m working on a pattern right now that has k1 p1 for 10cm and says to end on the WS. Which side would be the wrong side when watching this? Thank you for any help!
The even number rows would be the WS or wrong side row. It is a little tricky to keep track of it, because the pattern looks the same on both sides. You can put a stitch marker on the Right Side or RS to help you keep track of which is which. I'm counting my cast on as row 1 and it's the RS row. I hope that makes sense!

Do you have a clip on how to wave in the first free yarn ? Am been knitting a hat, I wave in my other free loose yarn but I don’t know how to have a neat finsh at the prim of the hat? On purl 1 knit one on the prim, don’t know how to wave in loose end to get near finsh and hide the yarn ?

How is this for beginners? It doesn't explain what to do at all, it just does it really fast.
James, it is 1x1 ribbing for beginners, but it assumes you have some skills already. Please refer to the detailed information and links in the description bar. If you need to start at the very beginning, there are other videos and suggestions there. I'm sorry if this feels over whelming to you, but there is no way each technique video can cover every single thing every single time. And it clearly states you need to already understand knitting and purling before going with this. I hope that helps.
This "how to" isn't very good if your a beginner. It doesn't start from the beginning and it doesn't it doesn't end with a hat. The background music is distracting.
There are a ton of other tutorials in the library, so you should start at the beginning if this is too advanced for you. If you had taken the time to read the description, you would see I even give you the links to the more beginner level techniques as well as a collection of free patterns to practice everything. Frankly, if you are too lazy to even read the description, then knitting is probably not a good choice of hobby for you. It requires thoughtfulness and effort. I'm not sure you understand those concepts.
This is designed to be for someone looking specifically for this stitch tutorial, and nothing more. Frankly, it's filmed so I can link my own patterns to it, and people have a reference if needed. Surprising as it is, I didn't create this tutorial just for you.
There is nothing here to indicate it ends with a hat. If this feels too hard for you, then I would suggest you not even consider a hat at this point, unless you do a knit flat and seam hat. There are tons and tons of other tutorials and channels on youtube. I invite you to find one you like, and skip leaving unhelpful, critical remarks on FREE CONTENT that people spend hours and hours to make. If you don't like the music, then turn off your sound. Or go to a different channel with a different style. There are plenty to choose from. If I sound mean or curt, then I apologize. But if you are going to leave thoughtless, insensitive comments on MY channel on videos I work super hard to create, then I'm going to tell you exactly what I think of your comment. I see too much of this on youtube. People do this work for free and invest a LOT of money and time in getting it set up. I hope you will think twice before leaving such a crappy remark on someone else's video.
It was exactly what it said on the tin :) I came to look at k1, P1 and this was spot on!
She said in the video that if you dont know the stitches use links to other videos to learn those first. And it doesn't say anything about a hat just a specific stitch.
