I was Mormon too, for 44 years. When I told my mom that I no longer believed, she disowned me. A year ago I got a letter in the mail from her telling me she never wants to see me again because I spoke publicly about my faith crisis. My child Re haven’t had grandparents for 5 years now because of this religion. David has written the song we all needed to hear, and Lupe is an example to parents everywhere or how to love without judgment and not let religion destroy relationships.
Exmormon here and we’ve been dealing with my in-laws being terrible about our family because of it. Solidarity, sis. ❤️ I’m sorry your family has had to go through such loss.
Okay I'm sorry that happened but that's not Church doctrine. People need to understand that what your mom did is the opposite of what the Church teaches. Do not equate the two things. They are not the same.
@@Lazerbadger2 While the above cases are on the extreme end, and don't represent every family situation, the Mormon church absolutely has a culture of shaming and othering those who won't get in line. A few conferences ago, Russel M Nelson said "There is no end to the adversary’s deceptions. Please be prepared. Never take counsel from those who do not believe." This is a shaming tactic. It's low-key shunning. He's urging members not listen to the ideas of those who leave. Imagine if you followed your honest conviction to leave the church, and your family no longer took your words or counsel seriously. It's dehumanizing and invalidating. The church absolutely teaches that those who leave are less than, dangerous, and deceptive.
The Christian faith is about a relationship with Jesus, He was about teaching & showing unconditional love.
Think Celestial. That comes DIRECTLY from the “prophet”. It ABDOLUTELY is taught from the leaders.

The unconditional love a parent has for their child is not a given in all families. David really stirred up the muck with some people and you can only feel sorry for them. It was a wonderful performance, from the fringe on the clothes, to the amazing background musicians to David's fantastic vocals, well done all involved, great work. Great Mom Lupe!
I was raised in a devout Mormon family and come from pioneer heritage, and it has been a journey deconstructing my prior held beliefs. This song has been a healing force in my process to becoming a better human being and father. The LDS church preaches conditional love, this is an example of unconditional love. Ex Mormon anthem!
I am a latter day saints and feel so much love from my Parents, Family, wife, and church members, and I know it is without conditions.

Exmormon here. Love the song and I wish my mother had a love as strong as David's. It's a shame what the LDS/ Mormon church does to families.
My mom left about a year after I did. My husband hasn’t been so lucky. We got written out of the will and basically downgraded to second class citizens in his family. They call us Lamen and Lemuel behind our backs. It’s absolutely awful that their religion teaches them to be horrible people.

If you don't know a single one in your family, then statistically they're in the closet, and it's because they haven't felt comfortable telling their truth because of the Mormon culture. In the lds church the truth is that FAMILIES ARE NOT FOREVER.

In my opinion, David’s Mom not only failed her son at the time she needed to be a lovingly stern mother but she failed Her God and Her Church Community as well. Very very sad.

Ex Mormon here and although i am not LGBTQ I've seen what happens, how bad things can get when somebody is disowned or put down by people who claim to love them all in the name of man made religious institutions. @@AQuinn-my3qt I can (sadly) not that happened to me, but uncle's were disowned as kids. Not for being LGBTQ. However, they were still kicked out by my grandmother just because she regarded her kids as nuisances. And regardless of the reason, I saw what being kicked out did to one of them. The other unfortunately died before I was born. But having seen what that can do to a person. I can honestly say there is no excuse for disowning your kids.

David Cook won the American idol competition. His biggest hit was Crush. He spent most of his life controlled by the Mormon Church which he now separated himself from. He is an amazing artist had recording contracts and was very successful internationally as well had many albums but the mormon church got in the way of his succes. I have been a fan for many years. ❤❤

I understood though. I was raised Catholic and didn't come out until I was 33.

They refuse to accept that he has as much right to whatever love, comfort and companionship he can find with another human being as anyone else. The LDS Church offers David two choices: Enter into a sham marriage with a woman he will never truly love in the way that she deserves to be loved (he's had three failed engagements) because it isn't in him to do that and it never will be, or live a life of solitude, for no reason other than that someone else doesn't approve of who and how he loves.
He once spoke in an interview of a conversation he had with one of the LDS Apostles (good luck getting that kind of connection if you're not an LDS celebrity, BTW) in which he was told at least three times that what he needed to do was to find a good Mormon girl and get married. David tried to tell the man that that wasn't a solution but he

The contestants this year are pretty religious, so all I could think about was how uncomfortable they must’ve felt when he was talking about leaving his faith because of how they treated him. Happy for him and good to see him again after all of these years.
