La Perla: Inside Puerto Rico's Most Notorious Neighborhood

- I decided to veer off of the beaten cobblestone paths of Old San Juan into the alleyways of Puerto Rico's most infamous shantytown. La Perla is only a steps away from the wealth and colonial beauty of San Juan but might as well be worlds away. Enjoy this trip around Puerto Rico and into the favela of La Perla.

I will fly back to PR and make yet another PR video in your honor.... Shall I make one or 2?
Toodles!
@@KeenanLambert198 make them, we’ll see if you don’t get your TV turned off. Your nothing but a culture culture bitch ass negro. Bet you don’t go to Chicago, Philadelphia, LA or other places with that bull shit confidence you talking with behind a keyboard.
@@KeenanLambert198 while your at it, SPIT ON YOUR MOTHERS GRAVE FOR ME…
The funny part about this is you're the one using unacceptable language and talking crazy. You are projecting my dear. My videos are filmed from a place of love and respect for all. That's why I have no problems in Chicago, LA, PHL when I have filmed there. Something about me or this channel triggers you. That's okay. Figure it out and fix it.
You are sick and you need to get better. I love you regardless.
Just came back from Puerto Rico and can not wait to go back! We visited old San Juan and were told not to go to la perla at night so you were spot on about it all. New subscriber here!
Thanks for this video, as a Puerto Rican I really enjoyed it. I have never been inside la Perla but I am from Bayamón and the things I’ve seen here makes me think this is the most dangerous city in PR.
It’s always the forgotten projects far out of sight from tourists, some areas are known for shooting at police and it has happened where they shoot at unfamiliar cars, mistaking them for enemies… lots of towns next to San Juan have this hood, I advice to avoid these areas at all costs.
I was just there this weekend and I walked all the streets with my little son and I didn’t feel any danger. Nothing but friendly people and just mind my business . Yes it had its flaws but I had fun and eat good food and listen to good merengue music! I definitely will go back !
Thank you for you input Carolina! Thank you for your words on your experience in La Perla… More ppl need to know! Bless✊🏾
Exactly I was there 2 days a go was very nice and quite nice people I feel safe 😊 Love it🥰
Un written rule… you don’t mess with the tourist unless they get out of hand but if you touch or harm tourist you will have every cop in the area looking for the perp and that disrupts “business”
As in anyplace, you have to know how to carry yourself. When you walk like you know you belong, no matter where it is, nothing should ever happen to you.
Thanks for sharing and loving to be a part of the Isla , I just came back from there for a weekend visit . love puerto rico home away from home

In 1985 I traveled to PR from NYC with my then wife and spent a couple of days in old San Juan.
We wanted to visit EL MORRO so we started walking and when saw what we thought was the entrance to EL MORRO it looked kind of scary which is weird coming from NYC so we asked this police officer instead before going in and I'll never forget his answer.
"If you go in there, you'll never come out alive".
Instead he told us how to get to our destination and to this day I thank him for it.
We did a tour and the driver took us through there. I felt safe and comfortable. ❤
I went to the Perla by accident with my wife and I immediately started sayin hi to everyone and that worked but it wasn’t night time
I love your voice ! Hostel seems really cool!
I do tooo 😂😁 it's very deep and pleasant
Thank you so much radical!!!!! The hostel life is a great social experiment… But this is probably my last time lol

I was born in PR in Rio Piedras San Juan I also lived in Bayamon and in Trujillo Alto when I was a kid ...the island is beautiful just dont get involve with drugs or sell drugs thinking you are a gansta . Young Boricuas thugs dont play in PR..

@@KeenanLambert198 will do, but first i must tap into the restrictions out there
La Perla is one of the most dangerous ,drug infested hood in the Metro Area and the fact that you are not allowed to film tells me things hasn't changed . As a Puertorrican who grow up right next to La Perla I would advice people not to venture down to La Perla specially after dark . Cops don't do it and neither should you !
Hi!
Historically, La Perla was that dangerous place you speak of. Due to the unification or "control" of the area now - I think its changed. Tourists are money & money unfortunately is power.
@@KeenanLambert198 La Perla doesn't need tourist 's money , kids in la Perla make in 12 hours what the average adult American makes in a 30 days , trust me .
Last year a tourist was killed and another beaten half dead just for taking pictures with their phones . La Perla is not a tourist destination where people go for the food , the museums , to buy a souvenir to bring home or to take a selfie to put it up on Instagram . it's a huge illicit drug open market .and you should be honest with people about that ..that's all I am saying !

Wasnt Daddy Yankee's Talento de Barrio filmed in La Perla?
@@CheckmateStallioN No it wasn't. Talento de Barrio was filmed at Gautier Benitez project in Caguas and some parts at Puerto Nuevo .
I love how he has gunshots playing as he’s walking into La Perla, but then right after says how friendly the people are and that the violence has been over blown. So why contribute to that stereotype by having third party gunshot audio playing? Literally just made himself part of the problem.
It’s a cinematic feature…. On this channel I play on common prejudices as a means to draw the viewer in and then show the “Real”… Not sure how that makes me the enemy but okay… Bless up

100% happy to hear this. I went back at night too… pure vibes…
Rafael Cordero y Molina and his sister Celestina Cordero where more than educators, they where ahead of their time. Their parents had been slaves yet they believed in the integration of all people regardless of the color of their skin, Cordero's school taught many important puertoricans including Roman Baldorioty de Castro, Alejandro Tapia and Jose Julian Acosta. Their respective schools where also essentially the first public schools in Puerto Rico as they did not charge nor where they linked to the church.
Absolutely.... 100% facts
I was in puerto rico November of 2023 for a week on my honeymoon. Medalla is very good. The food there is FANTASTIC. pina coladas are on point. All i drank there were medalla and pina coladas.
Started your first video about cuba last nite then subscribed been binge watching your videos all day. Good content and you mad funny! You definitely right about la perla went there 2 years ago and I was FaceTiming my boy when 4 dudes came outta of nowhere and said no cameras..but they were polite tho. We just visited La Perla today during our first time ever in PR from a cruise ship. Everyone was nice to us, we filmed with our GoPro and took lots of pics...1 local young man even took pics with us. Will definitely visit again, we had an amazing day and saw many beautiful places and ate the best food!

Yes!!!!!!!! I hope you head back ASAP!!!
The young boys from my city (Wilm, DE) got attacked in La perla on vacation .. pretty much for filming ..one of them murdered and founded burnt on a beach few days later .. think it was last year .. look it up .. be careful bro
This is true…. I heard about that story and it motivated me to go down into La Perla and see what it’s like for myself… Following the “Rules” seems to be the most important key in La Perla… It really felt more relaxed than any other hood I’ve ever been in…. I’m told that’s because “control” of the place is now under one group…. Thanks my brother
@@KeenanLambert198 right I respect it bro ! Thanks for the footage!

Guys were def standing around out there!
Great voice, "Locutor Keenan!"
Thank you and blessings to you family!
The worst time to wander in La Perla is in the night. Also Bayamon has a high crime rate index! But that's only when people go there and look for problems then they'll get what they look for, besides that nobody bothers you at all, like most places.. state clear from drama and you'll most likely be ok..
Exactly, Bayamón is my city and guarantee, this is not the place to walk with a camera UNLESS you know exactly what areas to avoid but it’s still at your own risk anywhere
I went to La Perla yes the drugs are there! Just like an urban city! If you are ok with living with that La Perla is gorgeous ok. Some people are comfortable in those environments not cause they are bad but because it teaches them how to be more aware and maneuver in dangerous areas without getting in any danger. You can get shot right in your bed right now at any time. Safety isn’t in police or from drug activity! It’s in your mindddddd!!!!!!
Just left PR and we (me and my boyfriend) got permission to drive through La Perla but was asked not to record or film . Craziest Shxt ever . Literally just landed . I’m glad I experienced it though and I was safe. . Do not think this is a game ‼️
My family from that varrio! 🇲🇽🇵🇷
Where’s the Tiano art? The real PR
The native piece you saw is in Estadio Miguel Fuentes Pinet in Loiza. Loiza was actually named after a native chiefwoman in PR. I love PR.... I hope they recover soon!
Being born and raised in Puerto Rico I see how dangerous things on the island have become over the years but that is not to say every place on the island is dangerous and should be avoided. I currently live in Florida and every time I go back to Puerto Rico to visit my family I ask my abuelo to take me to La Perla so I can take pictures but my mom refuses to let him take me. She keeps insisting that I will get killed and that La Perla is not what is used to be. I just want to visit the filiming areas and murals used when they filmed Despacito. My mom says the producers had to ask permission from the drug and gang cartels before being allowed to film the music video there. I have no clue if that is true but I see pictures online where tourists go and visit that area all the time and it looks safe enough to me.
DE DIOS NADIE SE BURLA,DECRETALO!!!
Loiza is worst bro and u went in if u wouldv gone deeper you woulde liked it have fun la perla isnt how it used to be there worst places that police really dont even pass by but as long as your humble and respect everybody will be good wt u much respect brother
I be at the basketball court a lot when I go no problems
Exactly!
His voice is so sexy! But bro....if you're being told not to be in the La Perla area, and not to film there....why in the hell are you doing it?!?! I know some people who went to La Perla. One made it out barely alive and one didn't. I'm planning a trip to Puerto Rico for the summer, and I'm not setting foot in that place!
I went down there to get some weed back in 2021, went down the hill road walked about 2 minutes and 20 young kids went up to me trying to sell me weed and I ended buying from the youngest kid maybe 12 years old. Got out safe and I’m a white american
What is the song at 6:00???
Hi Efrain,
There is no song at the 6 min mark… Did you mean a different time stamp?
Yes I meant that song around 8 something my fault it was the Bomba song
Saying Puerto Rico is not Caribbean enough is insane..
There many more neighborhoods in PR that are much bigger and are just as bad or worse , but yeah this one also..
I wanted to hit but my bro in-law wife she is an Afro PR. and she said not a good idea but when I come back I will go. It weird how we look down in to La Perla and Carmelo basketball court is next to it. They had a sign that says want drugs come to La Perla 😂😂😂
Next time the you're in Northeastern PR.... Give it a look, La Perla is a vibe! But they're rules to the thing, as you know....
