  • Hey let's talk about good games for once. If it's a version of Resident Evil, it's probably gonna be a good game.
REmake Remake is on Steam here: store.steampowered.com/app/304...
And here's a .png of Wesker's face so you can stick it on pictures of athletes or make stickers out of it or something I dunno: imgur.com/OqXFSuy

Also check out the TOVG podcast, in which my friends and I pretend to talk about things that aren't Resident Evil: www.thatonevideogamer.com/tag/...

As a fun fact, the Lisa Trevor sideplot was apparently planned content for the original game that, for whatever reason, didn't make it in the first time. The REmake just provided the devs an opportunity to finally implement it. Cool stuff.

    • @edima

BrainScratch Commentaries the original subplot involved diary entries of her father George Trevor and his discoveries as he continued building the Spencer mansion. If I recall correctly, they removed the original texts because it revealed the games plot too early. Lisa Trevor's subplot in the REmake was a beautiful expansion to the original cut content. Pretty genius if you ask me.

That's what should be done in remake (even in remasters)
it's why i still hope (even tho i know it won't happen) that when Dark Souls 1 Remastered launches we will see an inclusion of the famous cut content (Oscar's ending...Shiva subquest...Little Beatrice...Kirk's plot with the fair lady...King JarHel of the New Londo ruins etc etc etc...sooo much stuff still partially hidden on the disk was cut from Dark Souls 1 to the point of it being an art crime)
It is something that ALL games of the serie have in common..Demon's souls had (LITERALLY) something like 15%/20% of the game cut out which is still hidden on the disk (the famous "6th archstone levels") fortunately various hackers managed to make the levels work, with all the (new) enemies, npcs, objects etc in their place (without AI mapping, pathfinding etc unfortunately)
Same fate for Dark souls 2,3 and Bloodborne...entire areas, bosses, enemies, npcs, weapons etc are still on the disks we bought but, unfortunately, were never completed/included

Those aspects are even better in the remake:
Better graphics, lisa Trevor, new areas in the game, less illumination then the original game, the mantion is bigger and looks MORE like a mantion, new monsters, better voices, better cinematics, the mantion is creepier, scarier monsters in general, the bosses are bigger and scarier, the crimson heads, different puzzles in the whole game, the game is harder then the original, etc ...
The remake is scarier And better then the original game in all senses existed

You're right about the cast. At the time, the studio just grabbed any native English speaker living in Japan because it was much cheaper than flying in actors to do the voice work and live-action sequences. But everyone was credited under a false name, I guess because they didn't want this tacked onto their resumes or something. Since then, everyone (excluding Jill) has been identified and appropriately credited elsewhere. There's been much debate on who was Jill, with rumors going around that it was Una Kavanagh, Michelle Yerger, Wendy Rice, etc, but to this day, the real identity of "Inezh" is still a mystery.

i avoided old survival horror games for basically my whole life because i heard everyone complaining about how "bad" and "outdated" the tank controls are. after finally giving silent hill and RE1 a shot, i really need to ask... what is the problem?
it took maybe 20 minutes at the very most to get accustomed to the controls and with the changing camera angles i wouldn't have them any other way. i'm absolutely in love with RE1 now, cheesy voice acting and all. i plan on giving the sequels and REmake a shot as soon as i have the chance. i can't believe i avoided these great games for almost 20 years because people were complaining about something that isn't a problem.

It's funny to me that people complain about tank controls but still praise Goldeneye lol. Which has way worse controls. Tank controls take like you said about 20 minutes to get used to. They make perfect sense. I think some people just don't want to learn and would rather complain because they see other people doing it. I mean just watch people speedrun the games and you can see that the controls can be mastered pretty easily with patience.

I bought a Gamecube for this title specifically. I was a huge RE fan and hold it as the standard of "If you're gonna do a Remake, do it like this. Make it the same, just enough- but add some elements so everyone gets something new."
Then Twin Snakes came out, which sounded like a good idea in theory.... but MGS2 controls in PSX era level design as well as impossible unnecessary action in EVERY cut scene turned that entry into a joke. Even by the standards of its own entries that aren't so damn self-serious.

GS XP -Superior visuals can definitely help to enhance the Atmosphere, but all the goodwill was tossed out of the window when every Character started to backflip from missiles during cutscenes.
-Adding MGS2's feature's was a neat concept, but leaving the core level design unaltered made the game a cakewalk. And it alse broke half the Boss fights. And saying "if you don't like the new features, than don't use them" is a shit excuse. You could play through the original Zelda without the sword, doesn't mean that the developers didn't want you to pick it up. Heck, the added controls were one of the main selling points of the remake, so if I shouldn't use them for the best experience, I might as well play the original at this point.
-Removal of character accent's might makes more sense but does not make up for phoned in voice acting from half the cast.
-The style of the new cutscenes fits the series NOW yes, but the game came out in 2003. Back then the series had still some dignity left. Note how in MGS2 Snake was dependent on Otacon flying him between Shells 1&2, and he couldn't just Ninja-jump between struts.

Capcom's unrealistically high expectations of sales and misunderstandings of the market was responsible for series' change of direction and its biggest miscomings.
Gamecube was a relatively new console with a limited user base. The user base for prior Resident Evil games were on the PSX. The game isn't going to sell like wildfire, but it had a mild success.
Then they spent an exorbitant amount of money of RE6, so they had unrealistically high sales expectations. Square Enix did the same thing with Tomb Raider at the time.
Both of those games sold really well, but the expectations were set so high. Resident Evil 6's budget was so mishandled. The game looked great graphically and had a great combat system. The problem was they wanted a really long series of campaigns that all seemed rush and weren't well designed. So much focus was put on claustrophobic spaces and poor action set pieces. Instead of two really well done campaigns, we got two at best mediocre campaigns, one bad campaign, and one campaign that makes you wonder why they included it.

Not to mention that Lisa Trevor can also kill you instantly at full health in her third encounter, if you are right next to the edge and she whacks you. There are other traps besides the boulders that technically can kill you instantly, if those count, and if the Tyrant grabs you, I think the only way to break free is to use a defense item or have Barry/Rebecca shoot it enough. I think you can also be instantly killed if you are carrying the fuel cell and a chimera grabs you from above.

    • @MrSociopath
      @MrSociopath 7 років тому +25

I think his comment wasn't that there weren't any other insta kills, just that there were no insta kills without warning. The boulders happen, but you're given the chance to run from them. Hunters can, but they also make that noise and obviously charge up, giving you a chance to dodge or shoot it, whereas the shark just kills you without any way to fight back or really know it's going to happen.
Fuck hunters though, I will always be salty about hunters.

    • @ruekurei88

"just that there were no insta kills without warning. "
His argument would fall apart there then wouldn't it, in regards to RE4. Unlike RE1 and 2 your movement isn't restricted and you have various defensive and evasive maneuvers at your disposal, like dodging, kneecapping enemies then going into roundhouse or suplex them, jumping out through windows etc. You can outrun the boulder, and it's easy to do.
As for the fish thing, I didn't even know that thing could one-shot you, I've finished RE4 like 8 or 10 times on PC and GC and never died to that thing. Does it insta kill you if you don't get to the boat fast enough when it swims after you? Because if so it's pretty easy to swim back to it.
I can't think of any parts in RE4 where I can say it was unfair or had cheap deaths, I guess when you face off against two of those blind claw dudes simultaneously on hard?

REmake is my favorite game of all time as well. This is like every single thought I've had about REmake's development, gameplay, and production down to a T, in video form. What an amazing fucking video. After broadcasting RE speedruns for two years on Twitch and heavily trying to pimp this game out to people, I was wondering if abso-fucking-lutely anyone else on this planet considered the idea that REmake flopped on GCN because the demographic and install base wasn't correct.
I'm glad that someone else does, gave it a lot of thought, and fought the good fight to show the pinnacle of classic RE and get people to see that the newer 'grindhouse' style isn't always better and meticulous pacing of the game is king. It's a game that you have to THINK to get through and will punish you and create all sorts of tension for fucking up. Down to the health, down to the instakills, down to the save system, everything.

Azelliz Remtora Nemesis is actually really good. Very underrated. Very streamlined and intentional gameplay wise.
It just comes off a bit less ambitious than RE2, probably had a smaller budget, which is why it doesn't get as much praise. Being at the tail end of the PS1 life cycle and coming out near the technologically more advanced RE code veronica also didn't help..

I'm glad George brought up the issue of the new control scheme. A lot of people think it's a godsend because they hate tank controls, but I feel that the modern day control scheme breaks the game.
This game was made on a 2002 engine and had enemy AI, camera angles, pacing, difficulty and level design that were built around the philosophy that the game was to be played only with tank controls. This is why most enemies are so slow and why most camera angles are so deliberately placed where they are. Having the ability to run free form just feels so completely incompatible with the very structure and methodology of this game. If you want to introduce a completely new control scheme but do nothing to change all the other elements whose framework was contingent upon the older controls, it just sells itself like a lazy cash cow attempt to market the game to a more casual audience who may have never played the "antiquated" horror games of the 20th century.
It's kinda like the complaint over the Metal Gear Solid Twin Snakes remake. They gave you first person view and some other new tech and it made the game too easy because level design from 1998 was not meant to accomodate it. The REmake Remaster free roaming controls do the same thing. They may make you feel better because you're more comfortable and don't have to learn something kinda tricky, but who plays horror to feel comfortable?

After being raised with tank controls its actually more natural than the camera based movement. Even RE4 with its tank controls felt very natural, and for example the part when you're in the grand cloister of the Palace surrounded by cultists was horrifying because you can't just duck and dodge. Putting "fluid controls" into a horror game feels very unnatural.

My intro to RE was RE2 on the N64, blew my 8 year old mind, so by the time RE1 Remake came out I knew I had to give it a go (I was team Nintendo back then so never had a way to play RE1 till the GC) and one of the first things that stuck out to me was that bodies of "dead" zombies were persistent after you left rooms. I was always a bit of a nerd about how game engines work and seeing the bodies remain when they were removed in RE2 was a pretty neat little feature, so I started clearing ALL the zombies as I went through, imagine the heart attack when three of them got up at once followed by the pure dread that washed over me when I realized what I had done by killing each zombie I came across, I'll never forget the run back to the nearest safe room

'Silent Hill 2' had amazing voice acting. It's cheesy a shit sometimes, but it's perfect for the characters in that game. James Sunderland's voice actor, for instance, sounds nervous, uncomfortable, and awkward. That's exactly what James is. Eddie sounds not-so-right-in-the-head and awkward as well because he's not right in the head, and he is awkward as well. The people that played them were not professional actors and I think it Konami was right to go with them for that reason. They come across as sounding like real, everyday people caught up in a very un-real circumstance. Which again, is what those characters are.
i'm talking the original voice actors, mind you, not the "Let's spruce it up so we can be bold!" re-records done for the HD collection version.

***** Yeah I'm still on the fence about Kojima taking over 'SH'. I think it's awesome people are stoked about 'SH' again, but I can't help but feel nervous about it because I just can't picture Kojima doing psychological horror. I haven't played P.T. yet mind you, so I could be wrong.
Now with that being said, I do get bothered when I hear people say "Kojima may be the one to save 'Silent Hill!'" because for me 'Silent Hill' is a series that's never really needed saving. Sales wise, yeah it could use a boost. But as far as good story and interesting characters and characterization, 'SH' has never had a dull moment. I really enjoyed 'Homecoming' for it's story but hated it's combat, I dug 'Downpour', and I loved the total re-work that was 'Shattered Memories'. I always dig treks in to the world of 'Silent Hill'. It's never faltered for me.

Is he counting Alien: Isolation and The Last of Us as either 'not triple A' or 'not survival horror'?
Because it seems like chasing AAA audiences is what caused the stagnation of high profile horror games in the first place. RE6 was considered a failure - or at least a disappointment - because it "only" sold several million copies, rather than doing COD numbers: the only numbers that would justify the hugely bloated budget and even more bloated design.
If big horror franchises are to make a renaissance, publishers need to respect that horror games will always be *somewhat* niche, at least in comparison to Call of Duty or Grand Theft Auto or Super Mario or whatever, and budget and market in accordance with this.

I know i'm late to the party but...:
I personally like to call SH2 voice acting as "Non-voice" acting, at least when it comes to James Sunderland. Guy Cihi accompanied his daughter to audition, and while on the waiting room he, on a whim, asked if he could perform for the part, and from 50 professionals English and Japanese VAs, Team Silent choose Guy Cihi (Note that Konami didn't held the auditions, the devs did)
What's more is that... James Sunderland is takes heavy influence from the real life person Guy Cihi. Guy apparently went trough a tumultuous marriage and divorce, and so he was keenly familiarized with what James is going trough... James Hair is based on the haircut Guy had when he auditioned for the part, and so were James clothing...
I do question certain moments like the "It's time to end this..." part, but i gaze over it knowing that when they were Mo-capping it, they also acted it out, and then went to the sound booth to record the lines, and the quality of the acting is all the more poignant when on the last few minutes, James is openning up and venting his feeling to Mary on her Death-Bed, and apparently when they acted this scene out, everyone on the set were crying, including Guy and Monica (an actual Professional Voice Actress who voiced Mary) and later after that she congratulated Guy saying "You're good, really good".
James Cihi and Guy Sunderland are kinda the same...

@@JoesGuy When this video was made, the RE series was in a weird spot. Coming off of some good spin-offs (Rev2), but with the mainline games ending on an off note. I will admit to never playing RE7, and Code Veronica, and the vast majority of the spin offs, but I would say I'm a fan of the franchise. From my experience, RE2make is a wonderful addition to the franchise. Due to both 2make and 7's financial success, the franchise seems to be in a good spot. And with 2 surpassing 7 in terms of sales, Capcom will likely continue to make games in the style of 2make. And yes, it's not the original RE, sorry that fixed camera survival horror is dead, welcome to 2019. REmake is a masterpiece, but it's time has passed.

One of the best games ever made. It is a masterpiece in the following levels: game design, game mechanics, level design, atmosphere, sound design, OST, horror element, storytelling, visual style. Gaming, as it is now, has forgotten some of the reasons why RE is so good. These mechanics need to come back in some form. I think that they still have a place in modern gaming. And I'm talking, mainly, about:
-Limited and consumable saves, which you can use ONLY at designated locations-This added so much to the horror element to the game, it can't be stressed enough. This, like many other mechanics in the game, linked the gameplay with the setting, in the way that not only do you feel scared of the spooky monsters and the mansion, but you also feel scared that you might lose a lot of progress if you screw up, which makes the feeling of fear much more REAL. It also adds an element of risk, in that if you screw up, you'll have to start from the last save, which could be a big chunk of lost time. Like in real life, if you do something in where you can't fail, it'll eventually feel boring and uninteresting, but if you engage in an activity where positive punishment is a possibility, well, you'll feel bad when you get punished, but when you become good enough that you learn not to get punished, you'll get a sweet rewarding feeling, and the activity will become more engaging and interesting as a result. The feeling of relief you get when you arrive at a save room after playing for half an hour without saving would not exist without this. There is no reward without risk. Dark Souls understood this very well, but most AAA games don't. They prioritize appeasing and stimulating the gamer at all moments (appealing to the R selected), rather than building an interesting framework of risk and reward, and PLAYER CHOICE, like the choice to defer gratification. "Should I save now, or should I carry this save ribbon and save at the next save room? I don't wanna use ribbons that I might need later". It creates a natural environment where the player needs to take very important decisions. Choice is what makes a game a game, after all. This also applies to some of the following points:
-Limited inventory space-This ties in to the choice thing I was talking about. It makes you take crucial decisions and it forces you to try to predict what you will need in the future. Do you need an extra space, or is that green herb worth taking? "Real Survival" mode takes this idea to the next level because you'll need to keep in mind WHERE you store your items, because they won't magically appear in every box you open later.
-Very limited ammunition-Same idea. "Oohhh, I really wanna blow this fucker's brains out, but I'm running out of ammo. Should I pop 'im, or should I try to pull an evasive move and then run past him?". In that case, for example, you'll have to decide between: Consume a bullet, or take the risk of getting close to the zombie and try to run past him without taking damage. Which one is more valuable: The bullet, or your safety? Player choice, risk evaluation, deferral of gratification, bla bla bla (By the way, I'm not an expert but this could teach kids how to make better real life decisions).
    - Unique, easy to learn, hard to master controls- Many people don't like tank controls, but I think RE wouldn't be RE without them. I think that making the movement easier and more fluid would have made the game less scary (not to mention that the change in camera angles would be more of a nuisance if the game had camera-oriented controls. REmaster gives you the option to play the game that way, but I still haven't tried it out. It feels like cheating to me). Having to turn like a tank makes you more vulnerable to enemies, so you have to plan out your movement more carefully.
-Pre-rendered backgrounds (and fixed camera angles)- Over-the-shoulder and first person cameras are fine, but fixed angles still offer some advantages (and also disadvantages, but that's not what I'm focusing on), like: - It gives the designer more artistic choice because he can decide how to present each area, like a movie. - It adds to the horror theme as well. It can make some things scarier. It can emphasize some elements of the level that otherwise wouldn't stand out, and it adds to the element of suspense as well because you never know what the next camera angle will uncover... -It also takes camera control out of the player's hands, so the player doesn't have to worry about where to place the camera. As for the pre-rendered backgrounds: You're not limited by the hardware rendering backgrounds that way, so the game can look even better and more detailed.
-Minimal amount of cutscenes and more figuring out the story by your own - Look at Dark Souls, and the myriad of videos on UA-cam explaining its lore to understand why this is an important point.
-Some other points I'm sure I forgot...
I wanna make it clear that I'm not saying that a game is worse for not having these elements, or anything like that. All I'm saying is that I feel like these elements have been forgotten for no good reason, and could be used in any modern game, not just horror.
    Let's #MakeGamingGreatAgain ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°)

About REVII i think that horror today means first person. I gladly accepted PT influence on the game if the survival element is present; less the walking dead and more silent hill 3 (you play with a teenager and not a police or military).
I would like to see a survival horror in which you play with an elderly person in their 60s, would be terrifying this lack of mobility (perhaps a grandparent trying to save the grandchildren of a Raccoon City like ).

14:30 where did they find them?
Due to a few elements such as (but not limited to)
    -Extremely low budget
    -Complete Japanese localization of production
    -Little knowledge of English language by producers and directors;
the actors/voice actors for the game were never interviewed never auditioned just scene in order to ensure they physically match the requirements... the first and lowest costing of them were found and literally sent from U.S. to Japan. I believe it was the actor for Wesker who was a friend of the lead movie segments director and as a favor to reduce costs even further, literally brought a few "new to the industry" & "low costing actors" to reduce costs... Also the clothing were all designed in-house.
-Sorry I can't link the source I read about this long ago.-
You have to keep in mind this was still 90s and even in U.S. the best of qualities would be semi laughable now. All Capcom's RE department could afford was cheap, low budget 80s quality movie segments with writing done by Japanese people who had very little understanding and command of English language to start with.
Actually almost half the dialogues were actually written by the actors, as the game creators were unable to translate their intended Japanese script to English (even that may have been laughable as we all know direct translations seldom succeed. So the voice actors took liberty of doing this after knowing the general outline of the games dialogues.
Love this game with its cheese!!!

    • @MartyMacFry
      @MartyMacFry 9 років тому

I agree. We need to modify the idea of "remakes". Instead of starting over go back to a crucial point and change one significant thing IE do not blow up the city. Kinda like how the Star Trek films deviate in their own timeline.

    • @giovannimazzi
      @giovannimazzi 9 років тому +3

Yes, however blowing up the city should still happen otherwise we can get a post-apocaliptic zombie story and there are just tons games like that. I meant like, not retcon the explosion of Raccoon City. Just tell other stories from before the explosion. Different people, from different backgrounds dealing with the situation.
I.E. An investigative journalist finally gets word from an inside-source of Umbrellas involvement on the whole disaster. But to get there and get the evidence he needs to nail Umbrella's coffin he has to go through the town dealing with threats as they come while also being forced to leave his family behind on a safe place. Or whilst he tries to find them in the midst of the mess. And then try to find a way out.
Just imagine dude, it could be awesome
But Really they should retcon wesker Neo-like Powers, those were just dumb as hell.
But to be honest, I admit I'd be just as happy with a REmake 2 & 3

Jim Mazzi I'm guessing you never heard of the Resident Evil Outbreak games on PS2, also called Biohazard Online in Japan. It's pretty much what you're describing, except it was meant to be an online cooperative series featuring multiple scenarios and a bevy of different characters. They can be played solo, but the CPU controlled partners have a tendency of wandering off, picking up the items YOU need, generally getting in the way or straight up killed. Still, worth checking out.

Amazing video, thank you. Remake is still far better looking than most games today and I yearn to see more art direction like this in games. Every shot / animated background is so beautifully crafted/framed. The use of contrast and lighting is unparalleled. You hit the nail on the head (for me) when you compared the slow pace of the exploratory nature to the other games - the soft sounds of footsteps and the rumble of thunder. It's about experiencing the mansion and the environment as much as anything. So atmospheric. I put it up there with Red Dead Redemption as one of my all time favourite games.

That last sentence times ten billion. You can't beat a passionate team when it comes to making a unified and enjoyable product. Look at the Majora's Mask rerelease for what not to do: it was probably touched by a million hands who are looking to it to sell systems, not be true to the art of the original, and as a result it feels metaphorically mixed and has slightly clunkier gameplay, even though it's almost exactly the same game.

Nathan Cassidy but it didnt improve much aside from the graphics, they also put more focus on story which doesnt make the story better than the past games since the writing was terrible, it felt more like Splinter Cell Conviction rather than Hitman, i could forgive that change if it was something different rather than slapping the name of a franchise on it, its not as bad as RE6 though

    • @NathanCassidy721
      @NathanCassidy721 9 років тому +1

Suwat Saksri But a sequel is not the same as a remake. I see where you're coming from and I can see where you are coming from, even though I have not played any of the others.
I am currently playing Absolution at the moment and am currently enjoying the game and I can see myself going out and trying Blood Money, which I have heard is one of the best. And I could see other people doing the same thing.
So one good thing one can say about remakes and sequels in a game series is that it brings them back into the public eye and makes people check out the past iterations.

2015 is not looking that great when my favorite game of the year so far is a $20 re-release of an already excellent game. Just looking at how The Order 1886 and Evolve turned out is making me neverous. Still have high hopes for MGSV, if it does actually get released this year.
I'm really happy to see the Remaster is selling well. I've done my part to support it by buying it on both Xbone and PS4. I hope Capcom actually listens to its fan base for once. That The Order 1886 is so limited could be seen from a mile away tbh. The little interactivity and the numerous quicktime events in the presentations they showed off. My hopes are high fpr MGSV too, but it'll probably be a hell of a lot different than its predecessors. I am also carefully optimistic for Final Fantasy XV for a change (even though I absolutely don't dig the boygroup characters), but it seems the series will be more than a set of corridors again.

fgdj2000 Yeah, I heard that the early demos looked highly scripted, but I was not expecting the game to only be about 5 hours. I liked the concept of The Order 1886, it's just too bad that most AAA developers get lazy these days and think all they need to do is pretty up the graphics and the game should sell fine.
Agreed about MGSV being different, but since it is a odd numbered MGS, my hopes are extremely high because odd number Metal Gears have usually been my favorite ones.
Well, I know a guy who got the demo for FFXV and he said its great, but I won't know until I get FF type 0 in March. lol, Final Corridor 13...
I also hope Ubisoft gives us one more awesome Blood Dragon spin off this year because Far Cry 4 got boring really fast. I feel very bored of their climb tower and do the same boring side quests over and over again. I really don't feel like buying Ubisoft games this year, especially after how broken they shipped their latest AC game.
Also, Resident Evil Revelations 2 might be good, starts tomorrow...

You know, watching and listening to this video, how you describe this game with the certain clips you showed and the music choices you made to play in the background, it really hit some notes inside me and how special the original Resident Evil was and always will be. A gem in the rough that sparked a franchise's beginning and how even the original still can live up against today's so-called Triple A titles like EA's Battlefield V, Activision's newer CODs and even the really good games like The Last of Us and even Alien: Isolation.
But its when Rebecca started playing Moonlight Sonata in a particular segment that really makes you feel thankful that RE1's remake came to be and how it should be the front of what a real remaster should be.

The atmosphere was great and I got a few good scares out of it and it always felt super rewarding to finally figure out a confusing puzzle. It was also quite cathartic to go back and just speed through everything as Jill on my second playthrough. (man Jill's ability to carry around more stuff is super useful). The visuals were also really spectacular. For an upscaled Gamecube game it looked absolutely superb.

I've recently bought REmake HD and finally played it, and I completely agree with you on your review.
The resource placement, the pacing of exploration, puzzles, combat / avoiding getting killed is absolutely perfect. On higher difficulties and challenge runs this game remains tense, full of atmosphere, great art direction and level design. The goofy dialogues aside, this game is perfect. I felt transported back into the Gamecube era in some way, because the game was just the right length and had the right sense of level progression and differing areas that you would expect. Metroid Prime is similar in ths regard, so I felt quite a bit nostalgic for a game I hadn't even played yet.

Yeah who the fuck thought it was a smart idea to ship RE-Remake with the gamecube? when RE-Remake was announced when I was a child, I was so excited, but I couldn't afford to buy a gamecube.

1:03 I don't really agree with your opinion but i can respect it. I always felt like Silent Hill had the gold award for atmosphere but Resident Evil had to have been the runner up. Again just what i think.

+Cozy Agreed as great as REmake is I personally think SH1-3 still had superior atmosphere on top of the other things.

@@LegionAdell Meh, Being spooky is not the same as being atmospheric. Silent Hill has better raw scares as he says and atmosphere, but it really doesn't hold a candle to REmake and the graphical power it was offered on the Gamecube is just simply better than the PS2's. Especially when it comes to the games' lighting and shadows.

@@tcrpgfan Disagree, Akria's sound design and the unique industral ambiance or subtle use of silence to feel the player with doubt or exacerbate its obscure abominations win out in the end for me. I think RE has better gun mechanics though. Still SH's first three games take and their take on psychological horror make them incomparable with RE imho. Graphic fidelity also doesn't make the horror intense for me nor do most of the monsters encounters if I'm being honest. Othetwise I wouldn't think REmake was scarier than Dead Space 3 for example but I do. Also Silent Hill's lighting is phenomenal I don't even know what you mean? They use very different techniques. Silent Hill just does it better for me sorry. REmake does a great job but I'm more impressed by SH3's 3D environments over REmakes pre-rendered ones when I play them at their highest fidelity. This is all without me taking the otherworld scenarios into account which completely fucks me up on a first playthrough.

@@LegionAdell Well dude, what I was talking about is that the GC was capable of insane shit when it came to its lighting effects. And I'm placing that on the system as a whole. Like when you could literally fire a beam in Metroid prime and if you were close enough, you could see Samus face reflect from the visor. And this was a first person game made in 2002. That's the kind of crazy lighting and shadow work that I was talking about. Sure some PS2 games had decent lighting effects (MGS2&3), but they tended to be the exception rather than the rule. Seriously do a side by side comparison and you'll see what I mean with RE and SH and that RE just has better lighting and shadows done since it was a console exclusive at the time and was touted as such, meaning it had access to or could more than adequately focus on the gamecube's architecture, SH just didn't have that. Also, say what you want about the 3D environs, but early-mid 2000s 3d environments tend to age worse as time goes on barring a few exceptions I'm including RE4 in this so it's not biased. Just look at Devil May Cry or Metal Gear Solid 2/

@@tcrpgfan If you have a video that compares and contrasts Silent Hill and REmakes lighting techniques then I'll gladly take a look at it. Otherwise I stand by my statement about them having very different techniques that accomplish different moods and that Silent Hill's works much better for me in what it sets out to accomplish. I'm not interested in turning this into a PS2 vs Gamecube debate because that's silly. Ones obviously stronger when you look at specs like the GC running 485 MHz of processing power in comparison to the PS2's nearly half, 295 and that's commendable all on its own. GC is probably my favorite Nintendo console I've ever owned since i don't own a Switch at the moment. Getting back on topic, I however lauded KCET with pushing the PS2 to its graphical limits with SH3 and think artistically it can rebel against even early PS3 titles. The PC version of this and SH2 really shows how much they were being held back by the system with such incredible facial animations. I wonder what a lot of these games would've come out like during that generation if they were Xbox exclusives since it had the highest processing capacity to both PS2 and Gamecube?

the only thing i dont like about the remakes is the lack of color. Resident evil is a rare example of how Horror themed games can use colors very well. Fortunatly the resident evil 2 remake retains the old color pallete. Cant wait for RE2 Remake.
