- In this episode of #ThePrintUninterrupted, Tata Chair for Strategic Affairs and a senior fellow at the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace, Ashley J. Tellis tells Senior Consulting Editor Jyoti Malhotra that while India-US relations are on the rise, why India is unlikely to offer military support to the US military agendas or part ways with Russia and why US needs to understand India's strategic concerns better and seek a partnership.

Thank you Mr. Telles for clarifying the misconstrued inferences that interviewer Jyoti made from the title of the article. I am glad that India will stand her grounds and US will understand the constraints. India has its identity just as so many other countries do.
Jyoti conducts the interview as if she prepared only reading the title of issues she wanted to touch or worse someone else gave her the list of question.
The interviewer framed the questions so stupidly
Amazing clarity of thought Mr Ashley Tellis, I am impressed. He knows realities of India and expectations of US . He understands India is necessary for US interest in Asia to counter China despite having slightly different interests of both countries. He is clear that India is diversifying in defence equipment but can’t leave Russian equipment due to its scale of deployment.👍
@tytxlx6503It's not completely pointless. For newbies and for a layman, these kind of discussions does give some input as to what's actually happening.
But I have no hope from some of the journalists of Print who carry on their legacy rNDTV brand of Journalism.
India is a poor country. It does not have the capability to face China for a foreseeable 15:03 future. So India is buying time and playing with both Russia and USA to keep China at bay.
Dr. Tellis is brilliant in his foresight. Understands India’s position and forewarns his own Government on the Whys and Wherefores of India’s position; which he finds eminently understandable.
JM views and her attempting to put words into his mouth and corner him in some hypothetical situations just shows her political bias.
Kind of getting tired of hearing her. Few interviews and she asks some really ridiculous things just to get words out of people to make her interview more spicy. Sad journalism.
@@KaranBali108She is too naive to understand flawed methodology of these index which places Srilanka Bd pak in better position. She is behaving like that foolish girl of Kerala files who is ready to accept every thing imposed rather than understsnding reality .
Tellis is pro-china
The ultimate objective of the US is to finally have India on its side if not a full fledged ally in it's struggle for dominance with China.. or else it would have never considered to transfer critical state of the art technologies like jet engines and so on.. US knows quite well that India regards China as an eternal enemy hence the right candidate for it's machinations against China... they have a clear road map in this regard.
India is no more than a roll of toilet paper for USA. USA will use India to destroy both China's and India's economy. USA competition nahi mangta.
This was a wonderful interview with Dr Tellis, who knows what he is talking about , Jyoti. I must congratulate you. But I wonder two things
1. Why do you interrupt your guest so much
2. Why do you bring issues which have no relevance to the discussions ,for example
a. The wrestlers stir in Delhi
b. You, with all confidence, give a figure of Indian causalities in Galwan but mention only four casualties on Chinese side, even though, several global independent researchers confirmed that they had about 40 dead. Why not mention this, for the sake of record
I always sense that you never miss an opportunity to needle India, perhaps, to keep your bosses happy
She is super incompetent and unprofessional for such an experienced journalist
Yea.who trusts Chinese numbers except the media. I saw even international media buying it. Either all these all have a lot of love for communists or got bribed.
What gets repeated from the mic becomes original source for factchecking. Basically inbreeding ecosystem of communists and islamists.
He is repeatedly saying that India is taking very strong and respectable positions in relationship with US. But she keeps on insisting that US should not respect India and giving tips on how they should corner Modi during US visit 😢😢
JM is incorrigible and very biased. Totally Unprofessional
This aunty is well know for her anti India anti Modi stand
I wonder what does Jyothi has on Shekhar that he keeps her around employed.
@@PanakaluPoonakam Yup...there are also many bright and competent journos (from what I have seen in other content from print)

As usual - good old Jyoti still asking stupid questions of Ashley Tellis.
I smiled when I saw the title with words 'bad bet on India'. Very cunning choice of words by the publisher. Because there is no way Ashley would ever advocate making a bad bet 😊👍
Jyoti was expecting the guest to jump at the questions and bring about a negative response from the US guest against India. But unfortunately she didn’t get him to bite. Better luck next time Joyti. Maybe try and change your own view and that might help you “cautiously” line up better questions.
So true she tried her best 😅

Brilliant discussion with Dr Tellis - he understands both the country's think-tanks perfectly. It is clear why India cannot be an ally with the US, as it cannot support all the adventures US does around the world excepting China. If US needs allies, India too needs allies. Taiwan is an important question, India cannot hide from that. Of course becoming an enemy of China is going to be very dangerous. IMO India must do everything it can to neutralize Chinese interference in South Asia.
India is no more than a roll of toilet paper for USA. USA will use India to destroy both China's and India's economy. USA competition nahi mangta.
This interview exposes Jyoti's credentials as a strategic analyst.
In what ways

Jyothi as usual acting as the Fifth column. "We know that 4 chinese died in Galwan"......that's Chinese BS. Indian estimate and ample evidence of the 'grave markings' show that at least 40 Chinese had died.
The print is funded by George Soros..
Yes that was utterly embarrassing. You take the Indian stance as an Indian rep talking to an outsider. No matter which party. I hate Khalistanis so much but I'll be damned if someone says one bad word about Sikhs in Canada.
@@dharmani_youtube I appreciate.. but no point in diverting the topic. it doesn't matter at this point. I also believe that many more china died.
Very pragmatic views from Ashley Tellis. At the same it is better Jyoti avoids few questions related to democracy. I feel some of the questions related to this are rather silly.
1. He. He.. Jyoti gives it away when she asks what is operational collaboration!!! Or Will Biden ask Modi if we are allies or not?!!! or every time Jyoti says - it is no brainer....!!! But that is Jyoti we know! 2. Ashley is absolutely right in what he has stated in his article, however it was titled. But it makes a lot of sense for US to partner with India closely and hope that something happens by which India joins USA operationally!! Other way of putting it is this - India needs USA for defense equipment and technology to take on China on the land border as well in IOR region. But India will actively collaborate with USA in Indo Pacific but not for land border row. Also, India will not go against Russia, at least in foreseeable future or US adventures in Middle East or Central Asia!! 3. But one thing USA should appreciate and which Ashley does not talk about is this- India's rise is not going to threaten anyone, including USA. It will in fact, complement every country and support economic growth all around. 4. To summarize, this episode by Jyoti is a classic example of how not to ask questions on geostrategic issues and how to precisely formulate right answers to the wrong (or stupid!!!) questions asked!!! In particular, the last question asked by Jyoti was disastrous! Where is no space for dissent when any one can protest and make a nuisance of themselves for months together?
+1 for points 4 and 5.
Mr. Ashley is extremely informed and answers question with a lot of details and clarity.
Should be interviewed more often while explaining US policy on other nations too.

Ms. Jyoti you have headlined your article in the digital print version as “will India abandon…..and become a camp follower”. I feel it is a demeaning heading far from truth. You know it. Then why?

Awesome. Absolutely, India is in a difficult situation - as primary focus is on growth & development pulling its citizens from poverty. And protect its territory, engage in conflicts only if it must.
We need a talk between Ashley and Jaishankar - it will be epic especially if its an issue they disagree on
Fantastic sharing of views and providing clarity on US administration ambiguity of dealing with India at some level. It would great to have one CTC on this by Shekhar Gupta on Indian thinking👍🏻
This interview clarified many of my doubts. Thank you
Informative talk, enlightened with the shared facts. Enjoyed watching it.
Dear lady please understand that the world has changed
India's relations with Russia will help the US and the West as India can act as a conduit and this will leave the door open for discussions with the Russians.
Mr. Tellis is so erudite, so incisive, and with such a great command of the English language that he has made this conversation so riveting for me. Thank you sir.
Exactly and yet JM can make the whole conversation slightly confusing

Thanks Dr Ashley Tellis for your deep understanding of, in a way, India's psyche built on the cultural foundations of millennia, and American expectations as a polar power of democratic institutions . The day USA takes a clear stand on Pakistan & Kashmir (non-ambiguous), you’ll see a totally different India. Currently, the majority of population who has read history books (and not those morally insinuating sanctimonious social media posts) will tend to have soft corner for the Russians & will remain cautious of Americans and their agenda.
Crux: Take a clear stand on Kashmir and take all the love of Indians.
US already has a clear stand on Kashmir. If you are expecting US to officially accept POK to belongs to India, then its a different story.
What clear stand on Kashmir? It is disputed territory, as India wants. What stands on Pakistan? What Pakistan has to do with USA-India relationship? Those who read history are tilted towards USA not Russia.
The govts stand is absolutely clear What further clarity do you want?
soft spot for Russia and Putin? such people have a sycophantic attitude to a foreign power and a foreign leader. I think it's very unhealthy, I have never seen this in any other nationality. I am British and many British people accept the alliance with United States, but I have never met anyone who expresses a sycophantic and undying loyalty to an American president.
Russia will lose, just like they lost the cold war, things are not going very well in Ukraine, even though their brutality is a Stalin like level. Anyone with any kind of moral compass, would support Putin, supporting such a evil man is bad karma for individual.
@@vinay7397 I condemned the war and Putin from the beginning. Having said that British should be th last to talk about morals and Karma.

Great discussion Mr Trellis is bang on & didn’t let the journalist pointed question rattle
Where can i find the opening intro music.
To be an enemy of USA is dangerous
To be a freind of USA is perilous.
Henry Kissinger.
If the US eventually appreciates that while India gravitates toward US India would make its own space, would the same apply to the transatlantic relationships that they would differ with the US on the China challenge ? Does the US need to go to the drawing board and reassess what it must expect of every new & old partnership in a globalised world?
Most of them are members of NATO. They have no choice but to join the kinetic action should there be one
This is the Gist of India 🇮🇳 USA 🇺🇸 'friendship'
No Manilal, India is still trying stay independent, but if China does attack you then your going see America and India get closer.
Good analysis, same question for Indians to ask: if India has a direct conflict with China, will US come to fight by India’s side? We will have the same expectation but US may not come to India’s aid. If US track record is anything to go by, they are likely to leave their friends high and dry!
A good one from Jyoti. Ashley pure class as always!
People expect relationship between India and USA as either black or white. In reality it is different shades of grey.
“Yes. The world has changed.” 😊However i am quite uneasy about India being coerced into sending troops to fight America and Europe’s war. No country should be forced to do that
Way to go Ashley
India will not provide combat troops to support the US in a Taiwan conflict and neither will the US provide combat troops to support India in a conflict in Arunachel Pradesh. The relationship will be mostly transactional based on self interest.
India is no more than a roll of toilet paper for USA. USA will use India to destroy both China's and India's economy. USA competition nahi mangta.
Awesome Dr. Tellis. Your 3 lines in the end were more telling than the entire interview.
1. There are marginal territorial boundaries movement (clearly insinuating the more than 2000 sqkms fresh occupation by the Chinese right inside Indian side of LAC). In fact you even framed it as a price to be offered for further non conflict.
2. US will not wash the (dirty) controversial linen in public, affirming to all the dirty linen of human rights violations/Kashmir/Press freedom/The Freedom reports/Protests/Media muzzle/Dissent/Wrestlers farmers etc that was said immediately before by the interviewer.
3. The world has changed. Classic statement that US interests will give Red Carpet welcome to the same person whom US denied visa entry for reasons of Gujarat 2002. Essentially affirming the principle that US can and will do exactly either of the things again, as and how it sees the “world changing again”
The Guest broke anchors heart who wanted him to take potshots on Indian pm for not accepting to be US Seargent!!
Good discussion.more concentrated on defence. Not much importance on trade between India and US, VISA .
India does not want to be a vassal like NATO like British empire days… that is Ashley’s pain..
Surprising that host says in Galwan clash only 4 Chinese soldiers died. Must read "Snakes in the Ganga"
We do reset. We go to the source / sos cause it's messy. Send someone to Malaysia 15th June 2023
Common enemies may make collaborators, not friends. Only shared values make friends. Transactional relationships are just that …… a strategic trade.
I have read the article and it's click bait in the sense that the headline is more negative than the article itself 😅
Modi should ask Biden “are you on my side?”. I am not sure why that hasn’t been brought up in this discussion. The day US divorces it’s relationship with Pakistan is the day when the US President can ask the Indian PM whether he is on US’s side. Until then, India will provide tacit support to the US based on specific issues.
Good dialogue

The fact that this show is called "Uninterrupted" is a Paradox!

That everyone knows we are not going to involve in others matter. What is new there.
We forget: India was sanctioned by the USA in the past.
The simple question is - would US's *decision makers* engage with India at the same scale if there was no US-China competition? Would the traditional biases against India (viz. Hindu civilizational innate capabilities) allow the cooperation?
Dear Sir Ashley, i commend you in your articulation of your responses by which a layman would understand the interviewer is not a complete idiot and has a bias and agenda
Salute.
Btw, the only reason i am not a paid subscriber of the print is this specimen of homo sapien interviewer.
Jyoti exposes herself in her last few questions!
Tellis is brilliant! Jyoti’s opinion is not needed !
Jyoti, if wrestlers are protesting - how the hell is the space for dissent shrinking?
Since AT mentions the past, did US ever support india in the pak wars? So it is both sides reluctance not just india
In short One can't change its Neighbour. And Indian very well aware how far and NO further USA came to aid when going gets tough.
Why does this interviewer keep on asking daft questions? 🙄
because he is a US reporter🙄 and he does not like India supporting "multipolarity"its own interest and russia
Re the Ukraine war, most of the Global south has a nuanced view. The west has come to terms with it
Why did Jyoti say "so-called" incursion? Had she said incursion as claimed by India but denied by Chinese, it would have sounded neutral. But by saying so-called, she actually toed the Chinese line. Why would she do that?
Even in citing Chinese death toll in the 2020 Galwan clash, she just 4 Chinese deaths which is highly disputed across the world. A more neutral statement would have been at-least 4 Chinese casualties. I'm not sure how to assess these statements by Jyoti.
Jyoti uninterrupted doesn't mean frequently interrupting your guest!
Russia is a old friend of India. USA is new friend thats the problem.
India must focus on localization of defence products atleast. HAL & DRDO is not completing given targets on time so how can we compete against China?
Great Chinese minds dont run to foreign country for a better, richer life, unlike great minds (Like Ashley sahaab). If the Indian manufacturing and Defense complex needs to flourish, they need to do more than subject experienced and talented engineers and scientists to more than those boring entrance exams......in fact they need to do something they never thought about - ATTRACT TALENT.... from the world over with the money, benefits whatever. ONly then can Inida catchup with China.

Great interview. Only if UN had come in the way of NATO expansion after USSR collapse, world would have been different. And there are many other such ifs and buts.
America only sees Russian behavior as bad. Does it see in similar way Pakistan? I don't think so. Questions should have asked from both sides, it felt like some one from American think tank is asking why India is behaving like that.
The red carpet laid out for Modi bothers many
If the tacit deal with US is for combat support during any conflict China, India may still join. India is more concerned about its relationship with Russia.
Why would India fight with US in the even of a Taiwan conflict; especially when Taiwan has traditionally also never recognized the McMohan line and considers Arunachal as a part of South Tibet.

I am not sure why is she even a fixture in the Print with demeaning tonality of questions towards her own country. Beats me.
Throws in a some terms like multi polar. I mean the lack of depth in geo politics and ask question with some substance is not Jyoti’s forte.
It’s like Ashley is giving Geo Politics 101 lecture to her. He is about to teach here complex ideas but she is not ready to grasp the basics. Example - she harps on the ally question. What discernment has failed her mind for so long. It’s almost embarrassing to see her with no realization of her lack of depth.
