What happens during detonation of a nuke is so incredible. Spent a few days studying it in nuclear physics class. Initially the ball of plasma becomes so dense and hot that it actually turns opaque to the light inside it. Only the outer surface is emitting light. The soup of subatomic particles isnjust too thick. This also happens during a supernova and happened at the instant of the big bang. Then as it expands it cools enough for the particles to recombine, it thins out and suddenly that blast of photons escapes and cooks everything. There is some really cool declassified footage of tests out to the side of the blast that show the mach stem racing along the ground. During testing it was found that airbursts did so much mkre damage because of this phenomenon. You get a lateral blast immediately followed by a partially vertical one, and then seconds later, a huge reverse. The physics of it all is incredible.
I remember watching a documentary about Hiroshima in high school, seeing the shadows of people left behind, and children who had survived standing in the black rain that followed, really had a profound effect on me as a kid. The threat of nuclear warfare has terrified me ever since

Black rain happens from plenty of things not just nukes and black rain didn't happen in Japan. It's just radiation.

Only really in ground impact where the dust is thrown upwards. For conventional airburst nukes the radiation would be survivable within 2-3 weeks for short periods and within a year it'd be apparent but not overwhelming
