While "Sad Wings" still has that daring sense of experimentalism, it's the first Priest album that sounds like a Priest album. "Sad Wings" also offers songwriting that is leagues above "Rocka Rolla." I would also pick "Paranoid" by Black Sabbath. The first Sabbath album has three stone cold classics then a bunch of blues rock jams. Like with Priest, Sabbath's debut shows serious potential, but it is still a band that isn't quite fully cooked yet. Then "Paranoid" came out, and it was full-on Black Sabbath heaviness as well as an absolute icon of heavy metal. Even the blues jam intro to "Fairies Wear Boots" is heavy as hell.

Blind Melon - Soup. Blind Melon's self titled debut is a great album but Soup is even better imo. I also consider Soup to be the most underrated album of the 90s, so I have a ton of love for that album. On a bit of a side note, Soup is also the only album I know of that has a hidden track at the start of the album, not the end.
I actually prefer the debut. Either way there’s not much difference in quality between those 2 albums. If anything the first one is a little more accessible
Surprised noone mentioned AC/DC. TNT is a massive step up from High Voltage. I guess it gets overlooked as neither were international releases, with the int debut being a hybrid of the 2
Martin with all due respect 1916 is almost always regarded as one of Motörhead’s best albums. If you feel that’s one of their weakest then you’re definitely in the minority
My favorite second albums that are better or I like better than the debut: Kiss Hotter than Hell, Judas Priest Sad Wings Of Destiny, Iron Maiden Killers, Megadeth Peace Sells…, Anthrax Spreading the Disease, Metallica Ride the lighting, Helloween Keeper of the Seven Keys part One, Children Of Bodom Hatebreeder, and Death Leprosy

I feel I’m very Contrarian when it comes to King’s X. I was introduced to their debut album in 1988, by a co-worker at the infamous Lawng Eyelind, Noo Yawk record store Titus Oaks. I adored the debut and the five (Atlantic Records) releases that followed. Im sure my order differs than most fans, but here’s my ranking: 6. Ear Candy 5. King’s X 4. Gretchen Goes To Nebraska 3. Dogman 2. Out of the Silent Planet 1. Faith Hope Love Somewhere along the way l realized that I personally prefer albums 1, 3 & 5 over 2, 4 & 6. But not by that much. All of the first six King’s X records are exquisite, with no duds amongst the batch. I even saw them on tour for each of their Atlantic Records releases, except the debut. DuG might be old enough to be my great grandpappy, but the dude is an awesome force of nature! 😉 Rock On, my fellow power trio pals… ROCK ON! 🤘

Going with albums not mentioned here as i'd mention some mentioned. 1.Gallows,Grey Britain-----first album is just ok in my opinion,i'd give it four out of ten at a push, Grey Britain i'd give ten out of ten with a gold star,---if your a fan of Metal,Thrash, Punk, this album is a belter but needs a good few listens for it to drop,it has that quality. Honourable mentions. Black Metal---Venom Regatta De Blanc--The Police Rio--Duran Duran Join Us---Bluetip Novelty----Jawbox The Downward Spiral--Nine Inch Nails Replicas--Gary Numan Cockney Rejects --Vol 2. October-U2--though debut is a banger.
Judas Priest Sad Wings Of Destiny would be my pick. Amazing album, imo. Rock a Rolla does not even come close. The band was trying find themselves on the first album.
@@wernermoritz882 the original recording. There was a remix done a couple of years ago where they tried to make things more bombastic and spatial, but it sucked the soul out of the record.
Jane's Addiction - Nothing's Shocking (The live debut was excellent and energetic. The second album showed what these guys could do when you gave them some money for studio time with access to modern recording equipment. Perfection!)
My tastes cross several genres of rock. Here are a few of my favorite second albums that are better than the first: Oasis: What's the Story Morning Glory Chicago: Chicago II (to me it's better than the first more consistent the entire album) Def Leppard: High and Dry Duran Duran: Rio Skid Row: Slave to the Grind
I got off the Oasis train very quickly after Morning Glory came out. I was a big fan of the debut, and was rather annoyed listening to MG with it's boring ballads and worsening lyrics. My vote is for Suede who were 20 times better than Oasis before Butler left the band. Their debut album won the Mercury and then the second album Dog Man Star is a masterwork.
High and Dry for sure…and, I don’t think I’m the only one who just listens to, and doesn’t watch your episodes (I’m usually driving), so holding up a CD and saying “this”, doesn’t do me much good
Even watching on my phone, just holding up the CD doesnt do me much good because it is microscopic. Yes, guys, please actually use your words and let us know what you're talking about. Otherwise, great show, as always
contrary to many opinions, I love the debut albums of: Iron Maiden, Metallica, Def Leppard and even Dream Theater and Judas Priest The only bands that made a big progress on their second album in my opinion are Rainbow, Saxon and Riot
Slayer - Hell Awaits. Show No Mercy is fun but sloppy. With their second album, Slayer improves the songwriting and musicianship. Black Sabbath - Paranoid. Most of the straight blues from the first album is done away with. In exchange, we get a much heavier beast. High on Fire - Surrounded By Thieves. The first album is reminiscent of SLEEP on steroids. On their second offering, HOF change pace with an intoxicating recipe of thrash and doom.
The first album - Up the Bracket by The Libertines, the second album The Libertines self-titled, better than the first, and that is saying something! Check them out!
I LOVED Can;'t Stand Me Now but that first record was the closest to Britpop revival mania in terms of being in every student union, pub and club so it's hard for me to look past!
My opinion for this category is definitely not mainstream. It is the very definition of contrarian. This band's first album is considered a classic in the classic rock genre. Its considered one of the greatest debut albums of all time. And, I agree with this assessment. Its a great album and very deserving of the praise it receives. The follow up is often considered a disappointment. That's the mainstream view but, not mine. Montrose's debut is fantastic but, Paper Money, the follow-up, IMO, bests it. Here Montrose breathes life into a very forgettable Rolling Stones song (Connection.) It features one of Ronnie's heaviest riffs (The Dreamer.) It also features two of his best solos (We're Going Home and I Got the Fire.) It also includes my fav Montrose song (Space Age Sacrifice.) This easily fits into my top 20 all time fav albums.
Please tell me someone mentioned Flotsam and Jetsam. "No Place For Disgrace" is a masterpiece while their debut, "Doomsday for the Deceiver" is unlistenable.
Just a couple I thought of, where I really like the debut, but think the 2nd album is even better IMHO and these didn't get a mention on the show. Bad Company Straight Shooter, even better more dynamic and harder hitting than the debut. Led Zeppelin 2, my 2nd favourite Zeppelin album after Physical Graffiti and better than the debut. Starz Violation. Love the rawness and hard rocking nature of the debut but the 2nd album is more refined, more diverse and features a number of songs with a 1984ish vibe.
Before watching, the first 3 bands that come to mind are: The Cure, AC/DC (talking the first 2 Australian albums), Anthrax. EDIT (after watching); people gotta learn the difference between better and blow away. Don't agree that Diary blows Blizzard, Morning Glory blows the debut or Funhouse blows the debut. They may be better albums (IYO), but they don't blow away the debuts. Paranoid over Sabbath debut is a hard pick: the first side on the debut is as good as Paranoid, the second side is another story. The same goes to Zep 2 over Zep 1, Killers over Maiden debut: they may be better but they don't blow the debuts away. Saxon, Motorhead, Judas, Radiohead, Kyuss were great examples of blowing the debuts away. Some picks on the HM were simply ridiculous. C'mon!
yup, totally agree on the blow away thing, some picks were too out of proportion. to think something is better than the other is up to anyones taste, but to say that something blows away the other requires some baseline.

2. "Piano Man" - Billy Joel
3. "Trespass" - Genesis
4. "The Freewheelin' Bob Dylan" - Bob Dylan
5. "Stand Up" - Jethro Tull
6. "Disraeli Gears" - Cream
6. "Queen II" - Queen
7. "The Wild, The Innocent, and the E Street Shuffle" - Bruce Springsteen
8. "Space Oddity" - David Bowie
9. "Transformer" - Lou Reed
10. "Nevermind" - Nirvana
Nevermind?
Blind Melon - Soup. Blind Melon's self titled debut is a great album but Soup is even better imo. I also consider Soup to be the most underrated album of the 90s, so I have a ton of love for that album. On a bit of a side note, Soup is also the only album I know of that has a hidden track at the start of the album, not the end.
Good pick!
@@wernermoritz882 Thanks!
Sounded like a million albums listed but only one person briefly crammed in Queen II? That's the first sophomore album that pops into my mind!
I actually prefer the debut. Either way there’s not much difference in quality between those 2 albums. If anything the first one is a little more accessible
@@JCStorm76 fair enough. Hey I love the debut, too!
Freddie’s black side of Queen II is a masterpiece. But the first album is my favorite due to slightly better songs overall.
The 2 which immediately come to mind are Camel Mirage and Jefferson Airplane Surrealistic Pillow.
38:04 Objection, your honour! A deeply problematic choice, buried in the HMs... fun video, as always
Just an opinion, but I’ve always found Van Halen 2 to be much more enjoyable.
@@ryansvinyldestination9271 I actually was surprised you like VH at all considering your other picks. Never liked VH, I don‘t get them.
I can't believe someone said VH2 was better than VH1. That's a first for me.
VH2 is far superior except for the album.
Skid Row Slave To The Grind
Metallica - Ride The Lightning
Judas Priest - Sad Wings Of Destiny
Motley Crüe - Shout At The Devil
Dream Theater - Images And Words
Billy Idol - Rebel Yell
Def Leppard - High N Dry
Dio - The Last In Line (Yeah I said it)
Rainbow - Rising
Dokken - Tooth and Nail
Jellyfish - Spilt Milk
Iron Maiden - Killers
Porcupine Tree - Up The Downstair
Kiss - Hotter Than Hell
Opeth - Morningrise
Rush - Fly By Night
The Cult - Love
Radiohead - The Bends
Muse - Origin of Symmetry
Saigon Kick - The Lizard
Fates Warning - The Spectre Within
Alice In Chains - Dirt
Black Crowes - Southern Harmony and Musical Companion
Kyuss - Blues For The Red Sun
Cinderella - Long Cold Winter
Tori Amos - Little Earthquakes
i agree with most you said here but damn holy diver was one hell of an album.....
cant believe you said it.... lol
but man that rush rush album is pretty damn good too.
@@dvvaughn564 Holy Diver just has such a flat production. Always thought it was super overrated. Always preferred Last In Line. Just like Diary is far superior to Blizzard, even though Blizzard is the bigger album, but sounds like shit.
Yea definitely Kyuss, Opeth and Alice In Chains all had huge leaps in quality over there debuts.
Say Martin. This is off topic, but I thought I heard you mention a few months back that you were working on a book or article on The Damned Phantasmagoria album. Any updates/clarification?
My first thought was Saxon - Wheels of Steel. So many excellent choices listed by the panel. Great episode!
mine too!
Mine too
First one that comes to mind: "Out Of The Silent Planet" was a great debut but "Gretchen Goes To Nebraska" was next level.
Yep .. that's the example I gave on this episode ;)
@@UncleMeat93 I saw that right after I posted my Comment. Great minds think alike!
Im sure my order differs than most fans, but here’s my ranking:
6. Ear Candy
5. King’s X
4. Gretchen Goes To Nebraska
3. Dogman
2. Out of the Silent Planet
1. Faith Hope Love
Somewhere along the way l realized that I personally prefer albums 1, 3 & 5 over 2, 4 & 6. But not by that much. All of the first six King’s X records are exquisite, with no duds amongst the batch. I even saw them on tour for each of their Atlantic Records releases, except the debut.
DuG might be old enough to be my great grandpappy, but the dude is an awesome force of nature! 😉
Rock On, my fellow power trio pals… ROCK ON! 🤘
Garbage - Version 2.0
Placebo - Without you I‘m nothing
Blind Melon - Soup
Foo Fighters - The Colour and the Shape
Paul McCartney - Ram
Supersuckers - La Mano Cornuda
The Hellacopters - Payin‘ the Dues
The Presidents of the United States of America - II
It may be an unpopular opinion but i always go to Van Halen 2 over Van Halen 1, I love 1 but love 2 more
Going with albums not mentioned here as i'd mention some mentioned.
Black Metal---Venom
Regatta De Blanc--The Police
Rio--Duran Duran
Join Us---Bluetip
Novelty----Jawbox
The Downward Spiral--Nine Inch Nails
Replicas--Gary Numan
Cockney Rejects --Vol 2.
October-U2--though debut is a banger.
Radiohead - The Bends
Judas Priest Sad Wings Of Destiny would be my pick. Amazing album, imo. Rock a Rolla does not even come close. The band was trying find themselves on the first album.
In total agreement with Public Enemy.
Thanks!
Queen II
Muse. Origin Of Symmetry was an instant classic and the OG mix still stands up to this day.
What is the OG mix?
@@wernermoritz882 the original recording. There was a remix done a couple of years ago where they tried to make things more bombastic and spatial, but it sucked the soul out of the record.
I agree with Tyler The Last In Line is my favorite Dio album !
Be Bop Deluxe : Futurama, The Church : The Blurred Crusade, Mountain : Nantucket Sleighride, Mike Oldfield : Hergest Ridge, Trapeze : Medusa
Jane's Addiction - Nothing's Shocking (The live debut was excellent and energetic. The second album showed what these guys could do when you gave them some money for studio time with access to modern recording equipment. Perfection!)
Led Zeppelin II
Soundgarden: Louder Than Love
Without watching: I’ll go Billy SQUIER 1️⃣9️⃣8️⃣1️⃣, to me anyway, a 🌵 desert island disc 👍💯
Don’t say NO ⬆️⬆️⬆️⬆️

@@chrisflood9205 Lmao 👍💯
Hi Gary-my first pick was going to be Camel, but they mentioned that, so I was going to go with Billy-you beat me to it:)))))))))))
@@gaznathemoon1128 / thinking sot minds. Cool 👍💯
My tastes cross several genres of rock. Here are a few of my favorite second albums that are better than the first:
Oasis: What's the Story Morning Glory
Chicago: Chicago II (to me it's better than the first more consistent the entire album)
Def Leppard: High and Dry
Duran Duran: Rio
Skid Row: Slave to the Grind
Def Leppard High N Dry
Metallica Ride The Lightning
Aerosmith Get Your Wings
Queen 2!!!
Primus: Frizzle Fry
I got off the Oasis train very quickly after Morning Glory came out. I was a big fan of the debut, and was rather annoyed listening to MG with it's boring ballads and worsening lyrics.
My vote is for Suede who were 20 times better than Oasis before Butler left the band. Their debut album won the Mercury and then the second album Dog Man Star is a masterwork.
Spontaneous thoughts reading the title: Nirvana, Genesis, Foo Fighters, Metallica, Slayer.
Pearl Jam is a good one, Ryan! Also Black Crowes!
Trespass by Genesis
Get Your Wings Aerosmith = their best
Eno Taking Tiger Mountain, my favorite by him.
contrary to many opinions, I love the debut albums of:
Iron Maiden, Metallica, Def Leppard and even Dream Theater and Judas Priest
The only bands that made a big progress on their second album in my opinion are Rainbow, Saxon and Riot
Yes, better but doesn’t blow the debut away.
Dark Angel : Darkness Descends and Kreator : Pleasure to Kill
Aerosmith Get Your Wings!!!
Porcupine Tree - Up The Downstair
Def Leppard - Hign 'n' Dry
Ozzy - Diary of a Madman
Queens of the Stone Age - Rated R
Tesla - Mechanical Resonance
I prefer the Quotsa debut.
Thumbs up for High N Dry
I'm with you on Rated R. It's such an amazing album.
The Cult, Jane's addiction.
Queen 2
Collective soul, extreme, love/hate and smashing pumpkins are my choices.
all of these bands except for extreme had excellent first albums.
@@BunterHiden66 yes hints, blackout and gish are superb. I may be in the minority in preferring wasted over blackout.
Please do "worse second albums" next. I just want to hear someone trash Use Your Illusions. haha (not counting Lies EP as an album)
Black Crowes Southern harmony pummels Money maker
This list isnt complete without Harem Scarem - Mood Swings
Calexico - Hot Rail
Depeche Mode: A Broken Frame
Slave to the Grind, Ritual De Lo Habitual, Long Cold Winter
KYUSS!
Radiohead trounced Pablo Honey with the Bends.
