I daily a 1992 W124 250D myself. Been in my family since 2004. Learned how to drive in it and grew up with it, passed down from my grandpa, to my dad, and in 2020 I eventually took over it. It literally never dies. The biggest issue I have with it is the rust - Norwegian roads are salted like no tomorrow. I'm doing my best to take care of it though, and one day pass it down to my own children.
This, is a thing of beauty. One of the iconic cars that MB ever made. This needs to be re-made and redone and would be an amazing restoration project - to being this beauty alive in its pristine glory. These cars were made for a lifetime, literally and would last for 50 years minimum. Its engine sounds so pure and majestic, music to the ears. To drive this classic, would be a honour in itself.. W124's were the best sedan cars ever built.
I've had six W124's years ago. Amazing cars that never ever let me down. The one in best shape was a -90 200D with 350 000km on it. It was beautiful. The most "experienced" one was an -87 250D with almost 900 000km. The chassis rusted away on that one.
I bought 1988 200D, done 197000km. It's like new. I'll keep it rest of my life. I bought it from Berlin and drive it to Finland. Only one 2 owners car. First 1 year owner. It's legendary car w124.
In addition to durability, the approach to building a vehicle like a machine that lasts forever and the wear parts are easy to replace, the W124 is simply beautiful.
There is an acquaintance who brought a 300D to Brazil, but he brought it in the 90's driving from the USA to Chile and then passing through Argentina and arriving in Brazil (Rio de Janeiro). He still has the car to this day.
Tbh I don't think it would be a good base for a restoration. It all depends on how the chassis look like. For a restoration project it probably would be better to buy more structurally sound W124. But still it's a great car!
2:55 - 2:58 The inferior part of a car body, specially the two sides, are generally the more exposed areas to rust, and a restoration work usually start there... This car already would be in surprisingly good state if it was a daily use car, with normal cares. But a car what passed 16 years abandoned and exposed to the elements like this one? It´s practically miraculous. And talk much about the quality of the MB products. That make this a solid candidate to someone wanting make a restoration work with severely limited budget.
after 16 years, it starts and runs better than 30 years ago. We had a neighbour with a similar car, 30 years ago. When left his home early in the morning, I never needed an alarm clock.
This is basically the sound of my childhood. My father had an '85 190 D which he sold almost 30 years ago. I loved that car so much that I bought an '85 190 D myself. ;)
really awsome restoration work!124 is a super car for me.In my country(Cuba) they were working as a taxi after imported second hand from Europe,Very good car.I would own one of them.
Even gas ones are hard to find. Here in Quebec, I found only two gas, none in running condition, and one (frying oil converted) diesel, which had A pillars rust perforated (it's a safety issue for me). I finally had to buy a 1988 E30, but I'm quite happy with it.
Neben der Haltbarkeit, dem Ansatz ein Fahrzeug wie eine Maschine zu bauen die ewig hält und die Verschleißteile einfach zu tauschen sind, der W124 ist schlichtweg Formschön.
Hi I see you have several W124 models in your yard. I own a 1987 260E manual which I am currently restoring. These are great cars to ride very solid. Like your videos on the w124 model. Keep it up. Big up from Mauritius.
Keeping the best car in many ways ever built by mercedes, the W124 series. I would buy a new W124 over any modern car built today. Boy if only they would rerelease this car!!!!
In addition to durability, the approach to building a vehicle like a machine that lasts forever and the wear parts are easy to replace, the W124 is simply beautiful.
The important thing is you got that W-124 Diesel going, except for the bumper falling off from one corner, and the rear door opening, the car sounds good , Did somebody ask for a Uber?....
Got 5 of them, 2 diesel w124, 2 petrol w124 and a petrol w201. Its actually quite easy to maintain them. My daily 250D has been running for the last 60.000km without any repair needed. Only did an oil change every 10k.
Engines are used in gold mining operations. In Mali/Guinea they get the cars that almost all are considered trash in europe, but can make it to west coast of Africa. W124s are then run as taxis on "roads" till their death (rust takes over, doors fall out, etc), so the engines, which just give up to die, are taken out and placed on floating platforms. There the water pump is attached and they use those to pump soil from the Niger river, soil goes through cascades and small particles of gold are collected.
I also climbed a mountain with it 18 years ago "Muntele Găina 1467m", when I drop down from the mountain one of the brake pads, broke but besides that all was good these cars are legitim the best in the Mercedes series
Oh my...the BEST PART...after re-doing the clutch cyllinder...moving the car back and forth and at 8:06 - the BUMPER DROPS DOWN!! Classic! But, unlike an 'American car', the bumper CAN be fixed...What a wonderful (but SLOW) car this is...I remember throttle right to the floor in 4th gear on the highway - at around 3000 RPM...being so excited to reach 100 kph!!! I'm sorry I got rid of my old '87...it was a classic Mercedes...yet pretty up-to-date in styling..

You were thorough showing what you were doing and why. Loved how you did that.

The old engines are much better than current version. Try to start a commonrail engine with latest technology to start after 16 years.. good luck!
