I know this was posted a year ago, but as to shortage of containers, we have had great success finding vases and containers at the thrift store. Just run them through hot soapy water with a little bleach and they are good to go. Picked up 98 vases at one thrift store and even though they were cheep to begin with they gave us a discount for taking so many. So 98 vases for 50 cents each. And they call us when they get unique containers, we get to see them first.
That's a brilliant idea, D! Thrift stores are an excellent place to find vases and containers, and if you develop a relationship with the staff at the store as you have already done, they will save the special ones for you. Our teachers often find special treasures like antique tea sets or unique kenzans, which can become part of a special custom floral design. Look for local flower farmers! Flower farming has become more popular in the last couple of years. Not only are the flowers typically pesticide free, but they are fresh and have a longer vase life compared to what you will get from your wholesaler!

Do your customers not mind that you use glue on something as natural as flowers? Personally, when I want flowers, I want them because they are fresh, aromatic and natural and not containing glue or paint. Am I alone on this?
That's an interesting perspective, #Summer MSP 0.0! Some people want bouquets of flowers that feel freshly picked from the garden and simply placed in vases. Other people want more modern or contemporary styles that may require more mechanics. Glue is a part of the floral design world, particularly with flowers to wear, but there are designers who focus on alternate mechanics and foam free arrangements. It is really a matter of personal preference and you can let your floral designer know what you prefer in terms of how your flowers are styled. I tune in to your live shows on Thursday mornings when I’m at home. It has been a nice anchor to my weeks during the 3 month lockdown we’ve just had. Depending on daylight savings, your show starts between 8-10am here on the east coast. I’ll make sure to say “hello” in real time next time I catch you live.

I know this was posted a year ago, but as to shortage of containers, we have had great success finding vases and containers at the thrift store. Just run them through hot soapy water with a little bleach and they are good to go. Picked up 98 vases at one thrift store and even though they were cheep to begin with they gave us a discount for taking so many. So 98 vases for 50 cents each. And they call us when they get unique containers, we get to see them first.
That's a brilliant idea, D! Thrift stores are an excellent place to find vases and containers, and if you develop a relationship with the staff at the store as you have already done, they will save the special ones for you. Our teachers often find special treasures like antique tea sets or unique kenzans, which can become part of a special custom floral design. Thanks prof! Seeing pictures of FRESH straw flowers blows my MIND but I’ve never seen pros work with them. Is there something wrong or impractical with them as a cut flower?
That's an interesting question, Jessica! No, there isn't anything wrong with them. It's just that some flowers go in and out of style depending on floral trends. As Leanne says, "What's old is new again" and that's true in this case. Look for local flower farmers! Flower farming has become more popular in the last couple of years. Not only are the flowers typically pesticide free, but they are fresh and have a longer vase life compared to what you will get from your wholesaler!

Do your customers not mind that you use glue on something as natural as flowers? Personally, when I want flowers, I want them because they are fresh, aromatic and natural and not containing glue or paint. Am I alone on this?
That's an interesting perspective, #Summer MSP 0.0! Some people want bouquets of flowers that feel freshly picked from the garden and simply placed in vases. Other people want more modern or contemporary styles that may require more mechanics. Glue is a part of the floral design world, particularly with flowers to wear, but there are designers who focus on alternate mechanics and foam free arrangements. It is really a matter of personal preference and you can let your floral designer know what you prefer in terms of how your flowers are styled.
