- Let’s face it. There’s always construction happening in New York City and always a new building popping up. In recent years, we’ve had so many additions to the skyscraper line-up that the city skyline will be forever changed. Though many of these new buildings are miles tall and very impressive, they leave much to be desired in the creative department.
However, there are many less prominent, but ingenious modern masterpieces out there whose originality will stop you dead in your tracks. Today, I plan to take you along on a trip throughout the city, so that we can explore some of the quirkiest and most creative modern architecture you will feast you eyes on. In the mix are some new construction, as well as some more established ones that have been around for decades.
Tourists, architecture buffs, design freaks, and even locals, hold on tight cause it’s gonna be a fun and crazy ride today!
So here are the 19 most unusual buildings in New York City.

It’s amazing how I feel like a tourist in my own hometown. To think, it hasn’t been that long since I left (7 yrs) yet there is sooooo much that’s new. It’s way too expensive but still love and miss so much of my hometown. Thank you for sharing.

I Love The Older Buildings 😁😍
The culmination of architecture, NYC. How I sorely miss my place of birth and rearing! As a fan of architecture (my late Civil Engineer dad who worked for an architectural firm, made sure that we appreciated architecture), NYC is the epitome of architecture in the country in my biased view. From all that we've seen in this video in addition to the countless examples from the pre/post war buildings, brownstones, churches...the list is endless and plentiful in NYC. My favourite things about my hometown: the women (OMG), architecture, food/culture and subway. The ex and I refused to raise a family there and escaped 32 years ago, but videos like this make me homesick. Thanks and BRAVO!

This was fantastic! That's funny that you included The Apple Store at the end. When people come to visit me in San Francisco, the Apple Store here is always one of my "must see" tourist destinations, because it's very cool! But the glass box is pretty cool as well! Great job!
I'm happy to see more new skyscrapers are being built on Manhattan, because that's an indication that the skyline is getting some updates which means Manhattan is moving forward.
Manhattan is not moving forward all these new buildings they're building and stuff are for the rich and they don't even live in any of these buildings half the buildings on billionaire row and even Hudson yards are all empty no one stays there really all these areas are is billionaires and billionaires playgrounds they're not even really using and these new velvets and stuff are really messing up the economy in New York I don't know where you been but it's pretty out there and well-known there's even a documentary on this how these buildings are really messing up the economy in New York and stuff especially messing up the housing situations with these new big buildings and stuff their building everybody's starting to raise their prices and apartments and stuff because housing is nothing more than a monopoly business to people now.

The best art at the Guggenheim is the building itself, and is best viewed from the inside, top to bottom, on roller skates. BTW, your videos are the best researched and most enjoyable anywhere. I♥️NY
Yep ..the Guggenheim is a triumph..but should have been a Neiman Marcus store rather than a gallery.. all that's needed for a gallery is a big white box.

It's been some years since I've been there, but my favorite back in 2000 was the Lipstick Building at 53rd Street and 3rd Avenue. Amazing stuff on this video!

Something ironic - I've been to 19 out of those 20 buildings. The only one I haven't seen is the Columbia University one. The irony? I'm a Columbia student..
I am mesmerized by the IAC building (the twisty, 2-level pyramid structure with the frosted glass). There is so much there that is absolutely unique.

Thanks for the tour. I was just in NYC last week and walked up to the Vessel and the Shed. Next time looks like I need to explore the west side. NYC my favorite US city to visit.

I guess I'm just a sour old control freak, but several of those places almost made me dizzy to look at them. Some of them were really nice, though. I just prefer the older architecture.

Miriam Bucholtz my heart still broken over the twin towers. They were so fuckin epic. My favorite part of the skyline my whole youth and into my thirties. Used to pay my quarter to use the binocular things on top to look at my shitty apartment in Brooklyn lol

I find that all the newer buildings are just steel and glass and aren't anything that has any character built into it. Give me the Ansonia, The Dakota, The San Remo and any OLDER building where masons worked their magic! The steel and glass still reminds me of ice cube trays from way back in the day...

Thanks for this great video! I used to work in the IAC building. Its shape was cool from the outside but it ended up with a lot of poorly-laid-out random triangle-shaped useless rooms. I recognized almost all of these buildings but some great new ones, too. Thanks!

It would be interesting for New York City, and Manhattan in particular, to list and preserve as many of its old and original buildings as possible, cause there is no any other city or town in the world with so many fine examples of modern and traditional architectural styles, ie.; Early Skycraper, Art Decco, Postmodern, Italianate, Gothic & Greek revival, Federal, and also the elegant Brownstone rowhouses and townhouses and tennenments of its residential districts. The most modern, state of the art, highly original and functional new buildings added to its streets recently are also spectacular in its own right, but its biggest assest lies in its classical skycrapers, giving the city a particular character. NYC's urban and architectural heritage is second to none, truly unique.
They actually do exactly that, as in they landmark buildings and entire neighborhoods to preserve local character and architectural history. Large swaths of the Upper West, Upper East, parts of Midtown, Soho, West Village, Financial District, and Brooklyn (Fort Green, Clinton Hill, Brooklyn Heights, etc) are all part of historic districts/landmarked zones.

A nice start, but you have literally hundreds of unique buildings in NYC. I was expecting to see that you had several other videos for the next 200 most interesting buildings. One, in my opinion, would be the Frank Gehry-designed building at 8 Spruce Street. For sure it should have been in the Top 19. Otherwise, I think you did a great job. I hope you do more sooner than five years from now. Stay safe and stay healthy ...everyone!

You left out the recently opened public library in Gantry Plaza LIC that opened earlier last year and Frank Ghery’s 8 Spruce st. skyscraper in downtown. Not to mention the new buildings on the south end of Roosevelt Island.
The architecture school at City College. The downtown Ghery building. The Brooklyn Bridge Park condos.. Btw I've been to every building on this list but but the Columbia med school which I learned about through you. Thanks!!

Thanx. Your choices are iconic. Might point out that most of these buildings are by starchitect. And many are Pritzker Prize winners. The price of the Vessel seems expensive but is not out of keeping with costs of most good work these days. Imagine what Saarinens Arch would cost today. Astronomical. But worth it. Things like this don't come along very often.

The old building at 41 Cooper Square was, in my estimation, was iconic. While the new building is beautiful I am sorry to see that it REPLACED the original building. Additionally, thank you for adding to TWA terminal...one of my memories was seeing off my friends grandmother on her way beck to Italy for the first time since she left as a young girl.
The Oculus looks like Milwaukee Art Museum's Calatrava addition.

Great video but you missed the Austrian Cultural Center on East 52nd Street just past Fifth Avenue. It looks like a component built elsewhere and then slotted into place. It's my favorite weird building in NYC.

St. Peter's Lutheran Church is on the northwest corner of the Citigroup Center site, at 619 Lexington Avenue and 54th Street. would have been a great building to include. It is the church that the Citi Bank Building was built above. They refused to sell so the bank bought their airspace and completely enveloped the structure with the building. Such a great visual.
you really ought to include WHO the designers/architects were/are + where else they have buildings = more informative!

New York City's mandatory setbacks for sunlight to the street cause several of the design choices on the upper floors as most architects don't care about how their designs impact the local area. Canyons in deep shadow all day is perfectly acceptable to most architects.
8:11 I WAS from the neighborhood, before getting priced out...lol I know the NYC Dept of Sanitation was just redone, a few yrs back. (one of their many garages.) Which lies right next door. It's not a smell I'd be thinking of, as they are not dropping trash/ recycling in a garage but the constant sounds of trucks would not be appealing for me. Lol
Funny how the neighborhood and entire city, from my years there, is COMPLETELY UNRECONIZABLE! Living across the Hudson nowadays, I have no need or want to go back to the borough I loved and spent most my life in.
I prefer the older architect, the stone, the bricks, the gargoyles watching their buildings, etc. I guess that is yet another cost of getting old- being left behind. (never ever did I think I'd be A- Okay with that thought. Lol...but I soo am!)

I have totally underestimated what New York has to offer architecturally. You'd need a couple of weeks to hit the sites and take pics or just buy postcards. They're professional images.

I watched them build the Hearst Building, I lived down the block.
I didn't 'get' it at first. The base was kept from the former building, art deco as hell, and only after a couple of years did I understand the architecture's theme of the fires of ascension, rising from the past.
Those bevels cut into it catch the orange light from the setting sun. It's quite striking from New Jersey.
Edit: Well, I just learned a little more. The original building - also owned by Heart - was landmarked in 1985. That means the base couldn't be altered, so they worked with what they had.

We hope to see some more and maybe them one of them will be rhw St Nicholas G.O. church destroyed in the World Trade Center attacks,hope it might be one of the new architectural structures with a Byzantine Flair if it ever gets completed good thanks again for a great video and narration

The Oculus was amazing.
We took the subway from central park to WTC station but i guess we got confused and came out near Taylor Swifts old house in Tribeca so we had to walk all the way there which was a nightmare, especially because i always thought WTC was near central park.
Anyhow, we saw that skeleton from afar and were kinda curious for what it was and then we found the memorial and that incredible structure and it was just overwhelming. The tribute to the twin towers shines brighter than the freedom tower ever will, as it should.
