Thank you everyone for telling me how to fix this! I have Face ID working on the XS and realize it is very important to RTFM :D I had to connect the phone (like it said on the PC app) and do a cloud backup with the original module connected to the programmer (WITHOUT THE TAG), I was able to click the "Acti" button which said some things about High Voltage & it took a few seconds. Afterwards, I connected the tag onto the module & to the programmer and then wrote the .bin file that I had saved. After "Activating" that faulty module showed up with normal D,B,A,S. I've re-assembled the phone & all is working.
You have to kill the old chip via the activate button in the software. Plug it in, read it, kill the chip via the activate button, unplug the module, plug in the tag on flex and burn the data. Then connect the tag on flex to the module and test it!!
@@petergplus6667 Kill the old chip by giving it to much amps. The specific programmer used has an external power supply for that specific step. It needs to be plugged in when you push activate. The programmer will overpower the chip to kill it. The tag on flex will then bypass from the old chip to the new one on the tag on flex
Yep, this is exactly what’s missing here. You need to reactivate the dot projector without having the tag-on flex connected. After that step plug in the tag-on and boot the device, you’ll find Face ID working again.
When you're not given any instructions, half the screen and display is in another language, you're doing it for the first time and you haven't got the troubleshooting experience of a "known good", I think a bit of trial and error is a given. Thanks for taking us on this journey, Jason. Look forward to the next one.
I think after you program the tag on flex, you've gotta attach it to the original flex, then connect the entire setup to that tester/programmer. I could be wrong as I've never tried it but I've watched a ton of videos about fixing face ID with that tag on flex stuff. I think you would at least be able to test everything together. Hope it works out, Jason. Thanks for all of the great videos. I learn something with every one of them.
Yes, this right here.. I had to go back to the original flex (without the tag) and with the phone connected was able to click "Activate". After that, with the tag-on connected in series with the original module, it then read everything as "Normal". Face ID now works! woohoo This customer was pretty angry that his face ID didn't work.. 😕
@@ststele Tell the clown to treat their electronic devices with a bit more respect and they will last a long time. Treat them right and they can last a long time.
Hi Jason, I'm pretty sure you need to use the tag on flex with a new front camera module. The tag on flex tricks the device into using whatever camera is there for Faceid. But if the dot projector is dead it won't work.
No this is incorrect. Needed to click on activate to kill the mosfet on the original front camera/dot projector module. After doing that then you attach the programmed tag on flex and test it. If functioning properly install into the phone.
@@JamesSoulsby Yes, to kill the mosfet I had to connect the original module *without* the tag. Thank you! The Xs is working. I'm going to try the 11 Pro later today to see if the Cloud backup / burn process can get the data needed from the phone.
Yes he didnt do Icloud backup and Icloud Burn. I think its the icloud burn step that fuses the solder connection on dot projector... Should that step fix the S D B A Abnormal so that they are not abnormal anymore?
i believe you have to short the mosfet first on the damaged faceid flex in order to read the data.. that's the purpose of that 20V adaptor.. the I2C error is actually because of that mosfet not being able to turn ON
Hey Jason, When I said stay away from it, I was referring to the old school method where you take apart the dot projector and replace the Romeo IC then re program it. I said stay away as you need some tools: the jcid programmer, some holder fixture to keep the dot projector in place while working on it, replacement chips, special glue and what’s more important of them all, the alignment tools to align the dot with the front when you put it back(you need one tool for every model). It’s not hard and it’s a fun job that you with your skills would appreciate. However nowadays it is not economically viable as you will work about half an hour to 1 hour on it and there’s that much you can charge for the job. I don’t do the tag on flex Method but I think you have missed a step where you need to blow the transistor that is inside the dot. That is why the tool you use has that funky big power supply connected via cable
Yep, that's what the deal was. The phone needed connected to the computer & then after "cloud backup" it enabled me to click the Activate button. After that the module read as "Normal" across the board with the tag-on connected. Thank you!
@@ststele the other phone you had that was not reading the Romeo ic at all, might be corrosion under the flex that is connecting the dots projector. You can try to remove and clean like you did for the flood illuminator and maybe it will just work after without the need of a new tag on flex
If everyone stayed away from fixing face ID then no one with bocken face ID would have someone to fix it. We all have to learn just don't don't give up Steve I have faith in you buddy.
I usually have used QuanLi tag on and haven’t had any issues so far. I’ve gone as far as swapping out the whole front camera and dot projector with a tag-on flex, restoring Face ID with no issues so far. Fingers crossed 🤞.
You missed doing the third step, verify by connecting the qianli on tag to the flex of the dot projector and connect it to the programmer and verify it. The message that appears on the screen is that of up and down. Those flex tags are easily damaged, the internal circuits break or lose insulation.
Nice try Jason!👏👏👏👏👏 It was your first attempt. Keep on it! Still love your Troubleshooting skills.. Also your honesty you don't see much of this Nowadays... Not even in my IT World!!

Maybe grab good data from an other chip and paste it on the Tag On? Or won't it recognize due to wrong data? Is there a way to edit the data? If yes, maybe try to take a look at a good FrontFaceSensor data and try to mimic it. Anyways, its interesting to see how that method kinda works. Keep it up!! Greetzz
I think it should be used the other way around. The Tag On should contain the data from the original chip, because of Apple's serialization, but then you can use any flex that works to fix this iPhone. So the Tag On just circumvents Apple's serialization. Just a guess, but I would be really interested in the results of that test.
I am not at all familiar with this issue, but it seems to be that you want to read like a serial number out of the old flex assembly and then get a new one and put the tag in there to give the phone the original serial number. You would not really want to do this method on the original assembly, because it would either work or not if it was damaged. Some one else mentioned you may have to shut down the chip that normally responds on the assembly so the tag thing will respond instead.
No way with the thumbs down.. you are working through this WITH us.. you'll come up with a solution, you're an engineer. It's what we do. Sometimes it just takes a little time.. and mean internet posts.. : )

Thank you! I got the Xs working.. I completely missed having to "activate" the original module. The option wasn't available until connecting the phone & doing "Cloud Backup". Odd that they insist on collecting the data before letting you use it. Seems it should be available offline. Anyways.... glad it works!
With JC programmer you have to "activate" the original cable after you read it and before you attach the tag-on to it for testing, otherwise it is just like in your case, not going to work... so I guess with this programmer of yours you will need to do something similar, so maybe you are just missing a step. I have fixed a lot of phones using the tag-on cables and they are all working fine after the repair. Good luck :)
Hey, love your videos! BTW It show's abnormal when only the tag-on flex is connected because it does not detect the dot projector module. and the face id isnt working because you need to activate the dot projector without the tag on. It basically shorts the ic on the module so it can use the ic on the tag on flex! Hope this helps lol For the 11 pro max, i2c is abnormal so try soldering the face id module to another OEM apple dot projector flex pulled from another iPhone 11 Pro Max!
