- Teresa Jane Davis is a singer who sung backing vocals on Blur's single "The Universal", as a lead singer, she has worked with Sash! on the song "I Believe", she was a member of the ABBA tribute group "Bjorn Again" and sang the entire soundtrack to the video game Sonic R, which was written by GRAMMY nominated composer Richard Jacques.
In this interview, I'll be speaking to TJ about everything you need to know about Sonic R, why she went under an alias for the Dreamcast game "Metropolis Street Racer" and her times appearing on Top of the Pops!

She really does .
While Jaques instrumentals where incredible, her vocals truly made it something else and made it go beyond legendary. its mind blowing that originally the vocals were gonna be a option separately and that the Instrumental was going to be the default. She's an incredible singer and artist, and I'm glad that this interview exsist!!

She puts her heart into each song especially the title song (super sonic racing) for a song you only hear for two seconds just to leave that screen is astonishing 🗽
I think it also plays on Radiant Emerald while playing as super Sonic
The soundtrack for Sonic R never fails to put me in a good mood especially when I'm feeling down. It's just so good and Teresa's voice is amazing! Fantastic interview and it's great to see get more recognition!

I wouldn't be listening to and loving the whole soundtrack to Sonic R if it weren't for the lovely vocals of Teresa Jane Davis.
She's got the real singing voice of an angel and helps make the whole said soundtrack special.

Introduced to TJ via Sonic R and MSR, but I didn't quite realise the list of artists and bands she's worked with! It's one thing being a phenomenal singer, but there's a whole other side to the music world to build up a reputation as a reliable session musician. To be consistently called upon and parachuted in to perform with so many big names and/or varied scenarios is so bloody impressive!

I just discovered the Sonic R OST, yesterday.... My goodness... It's a ray of sunshine.. TJ Daviss' voice.. is amazing! The melodies are great and her singing definitely enhances the experience. I never knew a Sonic game had this kind of music 😂 but i love it!

It's okay, we all thought that, just like we thought that Eminem was Black before we saw him. It was her vocal style and power that gave her a soulful sound that was similar to artists like CeCe Peniston. A lot of dance, house and electronica had Black female singers because of their magnificent vocal power.

The fact she didnt know Sega put her vocals up on Spotify was.... worrying. You could tell she was like 'oh.... then why aren't i getting a cut from that?'
It's probably one of those they pay for the vocals once and own it forever deals, instead of them having to pay her every time they use them. Hopefully....
The deal probably was just 1 time only including the rights of her vocal, not kind of royalty thing.

I love Sonic R OST but not everyone seems to know her work for Metropolis Street Racer. I actually like her work there alot as well. My favorite are state of mind and time
I think the reason why is because it's one of SEGA's most obscure games. I'll be honest, I didn't even know Metropolis Street Racer existed until a few weeks before I interviewed TJ, and that's coming from someone who owns a Dreamcast!!!

OH yeah! Why didn't they include her the symphony? Or did they? I never saw it.
Actually if you can tell her Sega did release an official CD album back in 1998 for Sonic R in Japan. Then months before Adventure 1 did it again as a Best Of Sonic Team " PowerPlay" again in Japan. Then a Vinyl Remix for "Working Out" in the U.S. one of the song got in a japanese CD called Club Sega just they shorter the song a bit.
And after that every Sonic the Hedgehog compilation album got/get at least one Sonic R song so Sega do appreciate the songs for releases.
I payed a tons of money for the '98 R Soundtrack and PowerPlay album but it was worth it because i love the game and the songs. "Back in Time" is my favourite. T.J. Davis has such a lovely and melancoly singing voice!
Sadly as far as i know Metropolis Street Racer didn't had any official soundtrack release.

I can tell she wasn't thrilled to hear sega released the soundtrack 8 years later. Likely well after when she should be paid for any sales. Which she 100% deserves.
Unfortunately, I've had other instances on and off camera where I knew more details about the releases of a video game than the person who worked on it, very similar to the moment you pointed out. I can only hope that in the future, game companies can be more transparent to their developers than they have been in the past.
