    I first learned of the scoober when my first coach said its a novelty throw with almost no use. That was the only piece of bad advice i got from him. The scoober is my favorite break mark throw. Even though I've been using this throw for 7 or 8 years I still found this video incredibly helpful. The flight path segment was extremely useful. Thanks Brodie.

    Way to go Amir! "Scoober Diver!"! Also called a friend, because if they catch it , you don't have to catch a lot of grief from your teammates for throwing a long scoober into the wind against a zone.

    About a decade after this video was made, I saw Brodie make a 60ft-ish scoober putt at the 2021 Vintage Open disc golf tournament. Nice shot, Brodie.

    Good scoober video, ahough for most people trying to throw a scoober for distance there's a different name, a "turnover". Brodie makes this look easy (40 yards!) most players should perfect the short sccob to break the mark, and a play Brodie didn't mention, the give and go, often giving you a huck opportunity. The short scoober to a man undefended on the break sdie followed by a quick start out of the pivot and a return throw from the Scoobee gives you a lead-pass unmarked backhand.

    hey Brodie, I started playing ultimate in gym and i noticed that im a strong defensive player but my throws are slightly weak. i've watched about 13 of your how to vids and i feel like im learning a lot. i cant wait to try these throws in my next game. how long have you been playing ultimate and do you think i should try out for a team in college(im a senior this year) i love playing and you're a great teacher. keep doing your thing bro

  • @DizzyDiddy
    @DizzyDiddy 12 років тому +4

    Definitely try out for your college team. Most likely they're not looking for players that already know how to throw since that is something that can be readily taught and improves with practice. More important is athleticism and attitude. That said, get out and practice throwing with a friend. Use Brodie's vids to learn the proper technique. The more you practice the better you'll be. Practice throwing a lot outside of matches and you'll notice a huge difference in your game!

    It tends to have a faster release time as well the time in the air; it's less predictable since there's less of a wind-up too. And, it's fun.

    @0gravity1994 The ones I use most are the forehand, backhand, hammer and lefty backhand. If the other team plays a lot of zone I will probably throw a few scoobers here and there.

    Kind of, the whole Flidk series is Inside Out, Flick, Roll Curve, Blades, Hammer, and Scoober. There are sub-categories for each, depending on the desired shape of the flight path. Another Throw I like starting with a FLick Grip is a 'Mooney', it's a short lefty backhand for a score.standing Flick, and without lowering the Flick hand, reach up and take the disc out of your Flick grip and toss a short, sweet baby-backhand to a receiver comin from your right across the face. Sweet and easy!

  • @eastjones
    @eastjones 11 років тому

    A Hammer is thrown from the forehand side using the same muscle as a Flick, a Scoober is thrown over the backhand shoulder using backhand muscles , The other Forehand (Flick) throws are (in order): Inside-Out, Flick, Roll Curve, Blade, Hammer and Scoober. Names can vary with time and location, but these are the basic throws from the Flkcik side. Using a Backhand Grip there are fewer: Inside Out, Backhand, Roll Curve and "Turnover" (in ultimate, that is. You can use a Roller in Golf!)

    @jrdx actually this is a common thing in teaching most of the sports, and usually tends to help people a lot more than confusing them, even though i understand your point. Usually it only get confusing when you watch a close up, or slow-motion video. In teaching tennis for example we always tell students to "follow through the ball and lead it into the direction we want it in". Obviously thats nonsense, as your movement after contact doesnt affect the ball at all. But it really helps them.

  • @eastjones
    @eastjones 11 років тому

    re: Helix, the term probably evolved from "Hyzer", when a disc fades at the end of flight to it's 'Natural Side'. a Hyzer Angle is a throw with the outside edge down, the disc will fade Left (from RH backhand0. The AnHyzer Angle for a RHBH has the outside edge up, the disc will fade right. So an Inside Out Flick will 'Hyzer', a Roll Curve AnHyzer.

    Scoobers, when thrown correctly, are best used to throw over a cup 4:25 for short distances and break the mark if your forced backhand 4:02 . Hammers can be used to throw over a long distance fast or slow and throw a break if your being forced forehand.

    A R-L scoober can either be a 'blade', which keeps it's edge the entire flght, or it can 'hezier', which is a second curve onany throw. For a short R-L, use a flatter release & what I call a 'longer reach' with the disc before release, w/ more hand snap and less arm power. for shorter Scoobs, you dn't need the upper body twist, you can simply reach up quickly, reach out and snap it flat. For slightly more distance, keep it on the inside edge. There are a lot more times a short Scoob is needed..

    @bradythestrak Short Distance hammers are much harder than scoobers and they have lower release points. The reason is that hammers need time to turn over and with short distance, there is no time, so it has to be released flatter. Your wrist has limited flexibility so to get it flatter you have to bend your arm more. This results in a lower release. But a scoober can be thrown with a high release quickly and flat because the angle is easier on your wrist.

    This definitely shows me the value of a scoober to break a mark...one day I'm sure any handler worth anything will have this down solid even in wind...zone irrelevance(?)..guess I'll go work on it at league; I'm sure Joel can help me refine my technique...and your bro is a bit interesting dude...

  • @steelerfan786

    @illegitimate0 nah, thumbers are great to break the mark against a backhand force. the only real problem is having to switch to the grip

  • @642rekcor
    @642rekcor 12 років тому +1

    I have been watching a lot of your videos, but I have one question: is there a specific way to release the forehand throw? when I release, the disc tends to tap the knuckle of my thumb then wobble in the air a little. It doesn't really affect accuracy, but every now and then the disc dives to the side.

  • @eastjones
    @eastjones 11 років тому

    I don't usually teach using the scoober to go to the middle of the feild against a zone. they are more difficult in the wind, and the potential for a second throw is limited. I think a hammer to a wing or a straight Flick Flick (dump/swing) which goes around the cup is easier.

    @A43FI 13 років тому

    @kurodox No there isn't. I think 4 is the optimal with 3 handlers outside the zone (this is how we roll). Any more and there isn't much space to move. Either a) the defender calls for pick or b) two guys charge at the same time thus preventing any passes.

    Great video Brodie....Question for you. Is there any reason an upside-down hammer cannot accomplish everything a scoober can? Apart from the wind up over the head, the hammer seems to be the same throw. And I think I can throw a hammer off quickly with some force off without taking a step, unlike the scoober. I'm not criticizing the scoober...just asking, since I have never learnt this throw.
    Love all the tips man.

  • @xlaportex
    @xlaportex 12 років тому

    @jrdx You really should release it vertically for the most distance, because that lets it cut through the air well and then turns over and not double helix. I imagine because Brodie doesn't toss up the scoober very often during the game he doesn't practice throwing it for distance, and it's very hard to apply a lot of force because it's a very awkward motion. He just defaulted to a motion for his body more like the backhand.

    Regarding the scoober over the top i a zone, most players should not look for this pass Ift is difficult in the wind, and unless you have distance like Brodie, the 'scoobee' in the middle won't have a second pass set up, much less a ladder or other run even if you do complete the pass.. Practice your scoober, especially short passes that you are able to shape well. and it wil be a weapon in your main arsenal. But remember, no matte who sweet it flies, if it's incomplete it's a bad pass.

    You say release it vertical for distance, and you may be thinking that, but if you freeze the video right when you release it (3:38), it's most certainly not vertical. I see this a lot: people say one thing and even visualize it that way, but they do another thing. The forward is another great example where people say one thing but, when you look carefully at a video frozen right at the moment of release, it's not how they said. This can be very confusing for people learning it the first time.

    IMO the left to right scoober is almost useles. Better to throw a backhand there. What is great though is a right to left scoober, because that is the easiest imaginable break pass if you are forced backhand and the defender is standing on the left of the atacker, so the atacker has a easy time catching.
