Stack Rock Fort | The Forgotten Island

  • Stack Rock Fort was built on this small island off the coast of Wales in 1850.
    It was used to protect the waterway and dock.
    It was disarmed in 1929 and has been put on the market twice since. Nothing more has been done with this historic fort, it remains as it did, canons rusting away, seagulls taking over every corner.
    Massive thanks to Karl Dark Arts TV for the brilliant drone footage and to Matt The Secret Vault for being our captain once again and making this trip possible.
    Huge thanks to Baz for gifting us a new camera!!!! Jess will be using it on the explores from now on so expect to see more from her pov, when she gets used to using it anyway 😁

    Can you imagine laying all this brick? Incredible. Where did this workmanship and skill come from and go to? I can't even picture the incredible amount of actual work to get this completed and have it all come together.

    The small alcoves with small ports was where gunpowder pack explosives were stored. The alcoves without small ports were where the iron projectiles were stored. The small ports in some of the alcoves were over pressure vents incase of an accidental explosion and the gasses could escape without damaging other storage areas. The wooden floors were there to reduce sparking from shoes and iron wheels of rolling stock.

    Stack Rock Fort was built between 1850 and 1852 and briefly used during WWI before being disarmed in 1929. This property was also suggested by Thomas Cromwell as a Fort site as early as the 1500's to defend against French invasion.

      It's original condition was a rock. It's been built on and built on until abandonment. No sane project really seems likely to save it from returning to a rock.

      @@georgemasson6125 Indeed. What I do find interesting is that we have a fort here that has been built upon from not long after 1612, the year of Bermuda's settlement by the British. It stopped all major development in the late 19th century, and sports very similar gun emplacements, using the same guns, and I think that's why I have a special place for Stack Rock. Like Stack Rock, It also played a part in the two world wars, having been retrofitted with a couple of semi-obsolete naval defense guns (thank god we were never challenged by the German navy lol). Fort St. Catherine has, thankfully, been preserved as a museum though, and has quite an extensive network of tunnels, magazines and barracks running underneath.

But thanks to you and your friends, another relic of the past comes alive if only for a few minutes while we visually take in the massive commitment and effort, not to mention the sacrifice, a country, and its people are willing to do to protect themselves. Your video will forever be available for generations to see the tremendous cost of protection from an enemy intent on the domination of another country's people. War serves no purpose that can't be resolved with reasonable agreement by all parties.

    Yes it is amazing to see the old masonry work. We have a fort on one of our barrier islands, It is maintained by the national park service. A charter service runs excursions out during tourist season. There are a few of the old cannons still there. It is so neat.

  • @BaronSamedi1959
    @BaronSamedi1959 4 роки тому +23

    The gunpowder storage rooms down at the bottom of the fort would have been lighted by oil lamps in the niches. On the storage room's side, these would have had a fixed glass pane so as to protect the gunpowder from any sparks or fire. On the corridor's side would also be a glass pane, but that would be hinged to allow the lamps to be fueled and lit. Inside the storage room, the men would wear wooded clogs, again to avoid sparks from their usual hobnailed boots. All their tools (hammers, screwdrivers, ...) would be made of brass which doesn't spark when it hits metal.

    I live locally to these. We have 6 forts. South Tower (Martello Tower) which was a muesum although its sinced closed down. West Tower which is someone’s house. Stack Rock Fort (The one your at), Hubberston Fort, which is where you went past to get to this one, I could be wrong on the name, but Chapel Fort (currently an active museum and cafe) and the last one is Scoveston Fort. Scoeveston fort in built in land, Hex Shape, all these were part of the defences for French Invasion. Most were abandoned after WW1 and Some got reused for Ammo storage for D-Day.

    Imagine: You travel further and further into dark. Something feels off but you can’t figure out what it is so you press on. Until suddenly you realize you can’t hear your friends anymore and the sea birds are silent. All you can hear now are your footsteps and your breath coming heavier and quicker. You turn around to head back but you don’t recognize where you just came from. You’re not sure how long you’ve been walking but you’re pretty sure you’ve cover more ground than physically possible.

    The canons were fabulous, they have all been spiked, ie. blown up with an explosive charge, this would have probably been done during some period of decommission. Fabulous explore.

    "It did t take many tool, or skills to build this fort yet it still stands" coming from the guy who films and walks up decrepit stairs and almost falls through. Master Mason's and all their glory is what it took to build this fortress. You should have a buddy with you that has some insight to engineering. Cool place. Thanks for sharing.
