Stack Rock Fort | The Forgotten Island
Вставка
- Опубліковано 4 жов 2024
- Stack Rock Fort was built on this small island off the coast of Wales in 1850.
It was used to protect the waterway and dock.
It was disarmed in 1929 and has been put on the market twice since. Nothing more has been done with this historic fort, it remains as it did, canons rusting away, seagulls taking over every corner.
Massive thanks to Karl Dark Arts TV for the brilliant drone footage and to Matt The Secret Vault for being our captain once again and making this trip possible.
Huge thanks to Baz for gifting us a new camera!!!! Jess will be using it on the explores from now on so expect to see more from her pov, when she gets used to using it anyway 😁

Can you imagine laying all this brick? Incredible. Where did this workmanship and skill come from and go to? I can't even picture the incredible amount of actual work to get this completed and have it all come together.
It is incredible. And I am part of the next generation stonemasons, also from Pembroke born and bread which is the heart of Pembrokeshire, Wales. Have a good day
🪨 Rocks mortar... I'll need Sand, masonry cement, a mortar mixer...
@@callumcook685 3 parts sand 1 part Masonry cement. Square? Rubble?Dry pack? Veneer? Load bearing/ Fire wall ??
@@callumcook685did you know the avg age of a Mason is 55 years old...
I agree! This place should have been made into a museum! It's a part of history indeed!
This would make one of the most awesome castle-type homes, or insanely cool resort-style Bed & Breakfast destinations, I've ever seen in my life... WOW. Wow. Wow!!
Beautiful but yet spooky to me. This place was never ending. It Just kept going.
The small alcoves with small ports was where gunpowder pack explosives were stored. The alcoves without small ports were where the iron projectiles were stored. The small ports in some of the alcoves were over pressure vents incase of an accidental explosion and the gasses could escape without damaging other storage areas. The wooden floors were there to reduce sparking from shoes and iron wheels of rolling stock.
Thanks for the memories ❤️ EXCEPT we really don't know unless peeps like you share with us. Bless you 😇
What a beautiful location. This should be bought over, restored and used as a tourist attraction due to the history of it. Keep the videos coming Sam and Jess
We would only make something cheap and gaudy out of it.
Stack Rock Fort was built between 1850 and 1852 and briefly used during WWI before being disarmed in 1929. This property was also suggested by Thomas Cromwell as a Fort site as early as the 1500's to defend against French invasion.
La Royale
. Jean Bart!
This is one of those things which makes me wish I were a bazillionaire. I'd turn this into a part-private residence, with the rest open to visitors, restored as closely as possible to it's original condition.
already sold for 150pounds. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stack_Rock_Fort
@@mrmarcocecchi74 That's a shame... I was thinking the same thing... wish I had a bazillion dollars to buy the place. It's amazing.
It's original condition was a rock. It's been built on and built on until abandonment. No sane project really seems likely to save it from returning to a rock.
@@georgemasson6125 Indeed. What I do find interesting is that we have a fort here that has been built upon from not long after 1612, the year of Bermuda's settlement by the British. It stopped all major development in the late 19th century, and sports very similar gun emplacements, using the same guns, and I think that's why I have a special place for Stack Rock. Like Stack Rock, It also played a part in the two world wars, having been retrofitted with a couple of semi-obsolete naval defense guns (thank god we were never challenged by the German navy lol). Fort St. Catherine has, thankfully, been preserved as a museum though, and has quite an extensive network of tunnels, magazines and barracks running underneath.
The government should fix it for the homeless...too many kids dying from not having a simple roof to feel protected...
As mentioned so nice to see no graffiti or vandalism. Here in the US it is awful what people destroy. Love old forts here as well. Insane the skills of these people to build such things mostly by hand!
Amazing! the brickwork is as old as it is and still solid after 160 - 170 years!!!.... Thanks for the tour...
Chuck from California, USA...
Yes brick work much older. The guys in 17th and 18th century in our written history could not have done it.
I think it was re-worked or added onto. Notice the concrete slabs in some rooms?
Incredible, yet again.
This would be so good to turn into a tourist destination with accomodation
Imagine being rich and turning this into your home ?
So much history
THANKYOU again
How wonderful! No vandalism or graffiti
You probably just jinxed it
Even better no people
I hope some writer write on everything
Ohh, it was a brilliant and we're really excited to see the fort .... expect the same.... blessings...

Fresh island guys
Just amazing!!! Thank you for sharing this beauty. This is something I would not have ever seen without people like you who do this. Sending so much appreciation and respect to you all. Love from Florida.
Awesome place! I could see it being restored made into a awesome vacation and tourist resort with hotel rooms to rent, stores, cafés, Diners. a Pubs with music and other festivities. Of course the rooms and store and places would have to be made water proof like a ship, from storms
The history of it would make it even more.
this place has historical value, should be repaired so that it becomes a museum and tourist spot.
Seriously. What an architectural marvel and a treasure
@@Hjerte_Verke They're selling it for $178k
Millions to get that place into shape.
This place looks like a little town! I love it
I can't believe all the vegetation there! Crazy
Wahnsinn ...
Es wäre ein Lebenstraum von mir dies einmal in echt zu sehen .
Das ist ja wunderschön ....
Und die Möven ....

Wow, that place was epic! It really needs to be restored.

Hi im from Malaysia.. Whoaa.. 👀What an incredible sight. I was literally Glued to the screen!! Tq guys.. 👍
The background music is so amazing, inferring some oceanic sagas.
Love that you keep it down ☕
Beautiful light everywhere. Best left to the gulls and the tides.
Thank you. I have never heard of this place. But thanks to you and your friends, another relic of the past comes alive if only for a few minutes while we visually take in the massive commitment and effort, not to mention the sacrifice, a country, and its people are willing to do to protect themselves. Your video will forever be available for generations to see the tremendous cost of protection from an enemy intent on the domination of another country's people. War serves no purpose that can't be resolved with reasonable agreement by all parties.
Should definitely be preserved, it’s amazing
Very Interesting
Relic, a Fort that holds History and Architecture unknown in today's structures
That was a fabulous video Sam & Jess. What an amazing place, better than watching any history channel. I love how you narrate the history over the drone footage it comes over really professional..they say it's lucky to have a seagull poop on you 😀🥰
Yes it is amazing to see the old masonry work. We have a fort on one of our barrier islands, It is maintained by the national park service. A charter service runs excursions out during tourist season. There are a few of the old cannons still there. It is so neat.
The gunpowder storage rooms down at the bottom of the fort would have been lighted by oil lamps in the niches. On the storage room's side, these would have had a fixed glass pane so as to protect the gunpowder from any sparks or fire. On the corridor's side would also be a glass pane, but that would be hinged to allow the lamps to be fueled and lit. Inside the storage room, the men would wear wooded clogs, again to avoid sparks from their usual hobnailed boots. All their tools (hammers, screwdrivers, ...) would be made of brass which doesn't spark when it hits metal.
That's cool information!!!
Bingo, yep, I was about to post similar information on the lantern spots in the walls.
I'm a little confused about the last line "brass which doesn't spark when it hits metal." Brass is metal.
Wow, such knowledge minds! This is better than being in school, lol 😁
@@kd5you1 of course, brass is metal but not all metal is the same. One of the properties of brass is that it pulls no sparks when it hits other metals. Quite handy and safe in a gun powder room or - in the present days - on board of an oil or gas tanker.
Another great explore folks! Reminds me of the series Fort Boyard. Looking forward to more great content. 🙂
Thank you Rob!! 🙏
Thank you for taking me along on this awesome explore. Seagulls are awesome watch dogs and dive bombers.
It's very interesting but it's also very nice architecturally ... very well designed aesthetically, inside and out. Thanks for making this film.
WOW, WOW, WOW, WOW CRAZY ! Its a lump of brick and concrete !
Beautiful! If I had endless $$, I'd totally restore it to the masterpiece it once was. ❤ 🏰!!!
So grateful to call this place home!! Pembrokeshire has many beautiful treasures!! Amazing guys thanks for the chance to see what’s beyond the walls of stack rock 💕

Thank you very much my friend!
Wow crazy brickwork. Respect. Gotta respect the skills. May all that made this place rest in peace.
That brought back a few memories, looks as though its deteriorated lot since the late 80s, I took fuel out for the owner a few times he used to keep lobsters in a jacuzzi to keep them fresh, quite a few partys out there.
Where is the owner now? did it have electricity back then?
@@vaughnmahabir9638 I believe it has has a couple of owners since my time there, they had generator for electrics .
@@andymaxted thank you.
I’ve lived on the doorstep of this fine structure for all of my life. I’ve never managed to get such an awesome look see at it though! Well done guys, brill exploration 🙌🏼
There are however so many more of these in the area, you should check them out too 😁
This reminds me of the forts in my area. Lots of dark tunnels underground. Although ours are on hillsides. Look up Fort Warden in Washington State.
I did, neat-o.
How did I miss this one! Thought I’d watched all the older ones. This is my countryside here. Tho never been on Stack fortress! We Haven’t put the boats on the water now for two years - pandemic casualties! Next year now! This is one of the best I have seen guys. Amazing. Thanks 😊🤖🤗
Really enjoy your channel and all your exploring videos! You’ve inspired me to start my own, I’m pretty new to it and still finding my way. Keep up the great work!!

Year 1848: "How many arches should be built in this installation?"

Man climbing with camera sees dead seagull on stair railing. Man screams in terror. Man sees seagulls crying and circling. Man screams to unconcerned girl. Jess, get down! get out! [I paraphrase].
i love history and it sucks to see it being slowy erased in real time and on line save all you can to show the people that come next they will need it
This was a lovely treat! Thank you so much ❤️ love from Arizona
Shows the extreems the people had to go through to protect themselves from their own kind.. The legacy of mankind
Good and evil, mate. The way of the world.
We're a territorial bunch aren't we? Reminds me of animals protecting their territories. I suppose we're just that.
It’s so beautiful there❣️ Wow… terrific place!! Love the birds.
My heart beat increased while raising staircase and passing on passages very brave lady and you
The sounds of the seagulls are BEAUTIFUL
Wow! If I ruled the country, I would buy this place and turn it into a huge sea dungeon. A bit like Château d'If.
Another great video and Explore, watching you both evolve in your video, story telling skills is so satisfying to watch. Keep it up guys you’re smashing it 👍

Awesome tour, massive bricklayers job ,amazing project out at sea 👌👌👌
Haven't seen an enjoyable video explore like this one in a long time what a shame it's not been preserved better thank you for sharing this experience will definitely have to try and visit this one myself
You're crazy...I get lost in an underground car park!!!
Nice mooch. It is in surprisingly good condition. I guess one of the absolute factors in why no-one can take on its restoration must be the cost of repairs. To carry out a job like that, at sea would be possibly insurmountable.
From Nevada USA - Thank you, most interesting and enjoyable.
This exploration earned you guys a new subscriber. Full disclosure: I came for the Fort but stayed for the Jess! Indeed, she's a strikingly lovely lass. Who could blame me? Definitely looking forward to more adventures with guys. Cheers from sunny Southern California!
This was absolutely fantastic! Thank you
... If there's ever a zombie apocalypse... This would be the place to be.
Nahhh.. They'll build a zombie bridge to reach you.

Yeah Lots of places for zombies to hide & lay in wait. 💀😲💀
Agreed!
Good place to hide from Covid too!
Masya Allah
Sangat Indah Pemandangannya
This Fort really Luxury at that time.
yeahhh... amazingg
I live locally to these. We have 6 forts. South Tower (Martello Tower) which was a muesum although its sinced closed down. West Tower which is someone’s house. Stack Rock Fort (The one your at), Hubberston Fort, which is where you went past to get to this one, I could be wrong on the name, but Chapel Fort (currently an active museum and cafe) and the last one is Scoveston Fort. Scoeveston fort in built in land, Hex Shape, all these were part of the defences for French Invasion. Most were abandoned after WW1 and Some got reused for Ammo storage for D-Day.
Wow what an EPIC place
I would get lost in there ,I was thinking it would be hard walking and filming ,and watching for holes too,y'all always do a great job ,this was neat to see,so many things out there to see
Fantastic intro. Fantastic team and amazing footage! I wish i lived near you guys. You are so genuine ❤
Thank you very much Donna!! Glad you liked it and glad to have you here. Who knows, maybe one day we will be near you 😲😁🙏❤
Imagine: You travel further and further into dark. Something feels off but you can’t figure out what it is so you press on. Until suddenly you realize you can’t hear your friends anymore and the sea birds are silent. All you can hear now are your footsteps and your breath coming heavier and quicker. You turn around to head back but you don’t recognize where you just came from. You’re not sure how long you’ve been walking but you’re pretty sure you’ve cover more ground than physically possible.
Wow super Amazing explore this place thank you all for giving the spectacle of a beautiful view without you I can't see all the beauty of that historical building

The canons were fabulous, they have all been spiked, ie. blown up with an explosive charge, this would have probably been done during some period of decommission. Fabulous explore.
