Coffee or drink dates help the man vet the woman and prevent him from financial loss. What if he doesn't like her or vice versa? It's better to be out of a coffee than $200 on a dinner date.

For those dating I believe that coffee dates are a great introduction meetup. Low cost, low risk and coffee shops usually have a great ambiance. You cant drink as much without risking intoxication while most importantly, getting to know the person.
