I had attempted traditional shuttle tatting several times, and was about to just give up entirely when one of your videos popped up in my tutorial search. I didn't even know needle tatting existed, and your videos go so in-depth on the process that I "got" it right away. Thank you!
I absolutely love this pattern for handkerchiefs and use it often but I have found that after the chains I do have to tie because I find that while working the ring my chains loosen up and lose the firmness I want. Thank you for the pattern and tutorial.
Loved the design of the fabric, unique and on trend for now in color choice. The edging is a beautiful addition. I learned so much from you and your videos! I always recommend your channel to anyone who shows interest in this art. You are an encouraging, inviting, and easy-to-understand teacher. This isn't a terribly hard art to learn, a bit tricky to figure out in the beginning but it sooooo satisfying! I loved hearing your daughter in the background 😍 its so easy to believe that you can't do anything once you have a little one, or deal with the guilt of not being mom at every second... They're so fast! The collaboration was great! I'd love to see what you could do with covering a Christmas ornament ball, maybe an egg gourd for Easter with some beautiful swirling tatted lace? Historical costume replication? Parasols are big among some of the younger ladies here who do costuming, for conventions etc. How do you stiffen your work? I like making up earring sets, but starch tends to irritate and glues can be so dulling to the thread. Any other alternatives ? I hope you continue the channel, but if you need to take a break, so be it. Sabbatical time is necessary to every endeavor.
Thanks for your comment. Great ideas and good questions! I do use starch for stiffening my tatting. I have tried a lot of other techniques, even tried clear nail polish after reading that could work for jewelry, but nothing seemed to work the way I hoped. I use a clothing spray starch for most things, it washes out, but is a nice flexible stiffness and doesn't irritate me. I did an old video on it, I'll see if I can attach a link. When I want a really firm stiffener and don't care if it is scratchy, I do a sugar based home stiffener. Video link: ua-cam.com/video/qXcrh9tbvEc/v-deo.html
I HAVE A QUESTION ON PICOT SIZING. Say a pattern calls for 1/2'" picots, is that, finished height of picots, or the amount of thread, between stitches? Ex: is it 1/2" of thread, closing down to a 1/4" finished picot height? or 1" of thread, which closes down to 1/2"?
Great question, Phyllis! This could depend on who wrote the pattern and what time period the pattern was written in. A lot of the time patterns will just say "large"(L or Lg) or "small"(sm) picots(p) with no exact measure. But if you are getting a pattern give an exact measure, I would first off definitely use pattern image as a guide (I always rely a lot on photos or drawing of finished project when making tatting from a pattern). If you can't tell from image which size they would be referring to, and it doesn't say if it means "finished" size or "picot thread spacing" on needle, then I personally would assume they are meaning finished picot length from base of picot to tip of picot. Hope that helps! :)
Yes, definitely! Just simply skip the step where I say to "attach" and simply finish each ring and/or chain with out connecting them to the fabric. This is actually the traditional method. Typically vintage tatting is made separately and then sewn onto fabric afterwards.
