    Note on Audio. Guys I am trying out a new sound system with external mics. In the intro I had the sound system running. I was using right channel only audio. Once the video started, I was running both channels. I have already shared this with Patreon members and will be testing throughout the next few videos. Please comment on the audio quality.

    Hi Buddy. Thank you for making and posting another fine well thought out and nicely presented video. Your audio sounded great... It was so good I never gave it a thought until you asked for comments... had to go back and listen to some of it again because you asked.... I have TWO FT-101E's. One that was purchased new in 1976. It hasn't been powered on since 1998. The second I inherited a few years back. The original owner purchased it new around 1979, used it for a couple of hours and then put it back into it's original box to be kept as a spare... and was never needed. So it hasn't been powered on since 1979 (ouch... over 40 years) ! I have bought a complete set of electrolytic caps for both so far and am working on getting the mylar and mica caps I likely will also need. I try to watch all your FT-101 videos... even if not pertinent to me, I find I often learn something new. Always a good day when you learn something new! Your videos are a fantastic source of tips on my upcoming work on my 101's... I found myself even taking notes at some points! ...almost like being back in school ! THANKS AGAIN, I am grateful for you sharing your knowledge.
    ....
    BTW... wondering... as the tubes haven't been powered on for so long... might I consider perhaps pulling them out and only powering up only the filaments for a while (hour or so) before powering them up inside the radio ? That is... if tubes have not been powered on for an excessive amount of time, is there a process to use to safely bring them back into service?

    • @TheRadioShop
      @TheRadioShop  Рік тому

      Rick, Thanks for sharing. Sounds like you got yourself some nice rigs, I also appreciate the kind words. Yes I have done that with vintage tubes, mostly the glodbe style tubes like you find in 1920-1930 era radio. I jusr mount a socket to a board, plug in the tube and apply filament voltage and let it soak in for a few hours while cycling the power a few times. I even done this to other sweep tubes like 6Lq6 tubes.

    I've had my EE for so long now I don't remember what year it was when I got it. I want to say 1989 or 90. It's been a great radio and I have yet to have to replace anything in it. It's 100% original and has been in use almost daily since I got it. These days it's just a listener though since I have yet to find a suitable antenna for an apartment that doesn't allow them. Being old and poor limits my choices but for now the mess of wire I have running around my living room ceiling gives it somewhat decent reception. I've had many offers for it. I think it might be time to pass it on to someone who can talk with it.
    Even though it's turned on almost every day I imagine it needs new caps and some other work done but it's almost spotless inside and the knobs turn freely. I have done my best to do some maintenance on it over the years but have never needed to replace any parts.

    Been watching your videos on the 101E. So far, My unit is pretty much untouched. The only thing is on the 1314A regulator board. The MFC6034A has been removed and they put an SK3669 in the 1,2, and 3 position. The 4,5, and 6 positions are unpopulated. None of the other components in that section were changed. I think there's a better solution than that.
    QUESTION:
    Any ideas on the best route to go changing that?
    I know that the earlier units used 2 transistors to regulate the 6v for the VFO.

    If the markings for the tube is etched, then isn't that GE? Regardless of what the tube says, etched markings are supposed to always be General Electric.

      I have heard that many times. Not sure if it is both the supply and tube designator of just one. As this one tube surely has Sylvania on it(painted)

      @@TheRadioShop I think it would be the manufacturer who puts the designation on the tube, and then the buyer puts whatever brand they want on it. So if the tube number is etched, I would be inclined to think GE manufactured it for Sylvania.
      Not that it matters too much. both GE and Sylvania tubes are fantastic.

    WHAT IS THE BIG DEAL WITH THE YASEAU 101 series of radios? Clearly fine radios but I bought the Drake T-4B/ TR4X twins, in the 70's, for $250! It was compared to the Colins pigs. It's the best receiver I've ever heard.

      Barry, I do not know of anyone that sales the complete power cord. Once in a while one will turn up on eBay. What I do is buy the connector (variuos places like eBay) and wire in a computer style cord. You will also have the add jumpers but all this is in the manual. Word of caution; most of the connectors are numbered differently than the original Yaesu connector, just wire like the diagram in the manual shows.

      @@TheRadioShop Right! After someone told me that, and I said I was receiving in both channels through a Stereo amp, I did a sound check on my gear. Found a soldered connection that was not soldered. Well it WAS soldered , I thought at one time after I replaced blown up speakers. Once re-soldered , It worked ok when I went back and replayed the intro. I blamed the whole debacle on the cat getting happy with the vacuum de-soldering tool. 73 WA8SDF
