That radio is the reason why i have radios today. 1981, my best friends Parents were both Hams, she invited me over one day and she showed me her Parents radio room. she had two 101's parked next to each other along with a vast collection of other radios but the 101's stood out to me above the rest. I'll never forget the impression it left on me, her Mum got her G4 licence and i would sit with her and watch tapping the key. i was around 13/14 years old at the time. Cheers MIke, brings back alot of good memories. 73
@Mike-M0MSN Completely off-topic Mike, but I have a question about scientific calculators and Amateur radio formulae. I've noticed that on one or two of your videos, you use a scientific calculator. Have you ever thought of doing a video on how they are used in regards to the exams? I've searched the web but with no real results, and i think you may be the man to change that as I'm sure I'm not the only one who struggles with the calculator input. 73 Mike, and thank you.
Another FT-101 returns to the air - always a good thing. There is a very active Facebook group devoted to the FT-101 series - Keeping the FT101 Alive. Now over 1200 worldwide members, everything focused on repair, alignment and using these radios. If you have a FT-101, head on over, plenty of knowledgeable blokes and good contributions. Sooner or later, you'll have to fix it- part of the fun & learning!
Boy does this bring back memories. My brother-in-law hand carried on of these back from Japan for my dad. I grew up watching him talk on it. When he moved away I got my general and we had regular talks every Sunday night. I had a Yaesu FT401b (still do) Unfortunatley my dad's Yeasu was lost when his house burned down. I'm getting back to being active and I'm looking at restoring my FT401B. Thanks so much for the video!
I SO WANT TO DO THIS TYPE OF WORK! But I can barely screw in a light bulb! Did a lot of SWL as a boy, now 71 and really want to get back to not just SWL but Ham and even more to understand operation and repair on a more practical level as illustrated by your skill. Please don't stop, inspiring.........thank you. Best, John L. Raymond, Maine U.S.A. PS: I have Yaesu FT 101EX bought it about 5 years ago in a shrewd deal($450). STILL DO NOT KNOW IF IT WORKS, lights up though, fun to look at(yea for me).
Good to see you got it running well Mike. It sounds lovely and looks in good cosmetic condition. I'm sure you will get a lot of pleasure using it. Old rigs are not everyone's thing but for me, they have the charm of history to them. That's my excuse for ending up with 4 off RCA AR88s!
She’s a beaut Clark one of a kind. My buddy still has one in line he uses on 80m am net. I listened the other day sent him a recording of what he sounded like ☺️wonder if he knew how bad the drifting effects the audio 🤔 I would listen all day to that but use my ftdx10 to TX with ☺️
Great job. I have a icom 740, was working well, then after not using it for a while, won't fire up now, shame because it had beautiful audio, and it's out of my league to take the lid off.
I really should have one of these beside my FRG-7.....old school look's cool, but DAMN, that box is SO full of magic make it work stuff...my IC-7300 has "component envy" in extremus....
Thats a really nice Radio Mike. Top Work. Ive just replaced some surface mount stuff in a Studio Mixing Desk today. Im getting to old for that small electrickery malarky :-)
Hi Mike, seems like a 27Mhz mod gone wrong. I have 101s as well, replaced old fets with J310, and dual gate with 3sk163. Very hot rx now. 73 DE William, ZS4L
Its so intresting watching you fault find carnt beat valve equipment looks nice to see radio's from the past, i owned a yaesu ft101zd mkIII with fm on loved it. Keep up the good work Mike . 73 Mike M1KEY M0FCG
Lovely Job well done. R7 and R8 are gone on one I am trying to Revive. Did you go ahead with the re-cap before switch on? or was the Servicing to the rectifier board enough for now? Many thanks for sharing.
awesome work Mike. I have a boat anchor ....Kenwood TS-520s....it needs tubes and a ceramic capacitor...... I am in over my head... so it sits for the moment.
@@mike-M0MSN Actually I think you will find that the modification was to bring the WARC bands to the rig - so 30, 17 and 12 metres. Hence the extra markings that are on the front of the rig. I have a 101E the same in which I fitted the same mod many years ago. The rig has sat on my shelf for many years and needs new finals in it and have at long last decided to do the work on it. So been looking up vids on the subject. There are one or two questionable ones out there!! (G0OIK)
One of the issues that can escalate quickly is the equalising resistors across the high voltage rectifier diodes, they are operated at over rated voltage (not wattage) and when they fail they cause the rectifiers to fail like dominoes. I will message you elsewhere 73
The heater switch controls the filaments for the output tubes. It's normal behaviour that you can't transmit without it on, the reason you'd turn it off is if you're on battery and just listening, or saving wear on the tubes when not transmitting. After turning on the heater it'll take around 30s before the tubes are war,ed up and you can start transmitting. If you havent used a tube set before, check the manual for the procedure of tuning up the finals.
7:58 That's not a nail, that's a fuse. Can't see details on the video but it should be somewhere around 30-60A. I guess that spark emiting resistor was the culprit behind the malfunction.
Lol!!.... apparently the "mod" was for 12 meters. As I see that you conveniently removed the sticker from the scale on the bandswitch by the second segment of the receive demonstration video! And the "short" was obviously caused by the nail rattling about inside the radio, and not the mod.
This video is reminiscent of many trips through my FT-101E. Also, I killed a "B" model once - required rebuilding of the PB-1075 . . . twice. (Hi, hi.)

Hey Matt, Its the sounds and smell of the tubes of these older radios that bring the memories for me..

I miss my old FT-101E ... she was a darn good radio... rock solid. even ran a few digital modes on her.
Yer Nice
Great to see you sniff out the cause. A great audio output too. Can't wait to see it on TX.

Great to see you saved that radio
I have one given to me also but haven't fired it up yet.. Thanks for the video...
Tis a thing of beauty.
Agreed
Lovely radio Mike! Very similar appearance to the FR-101, need to get my hands on the counterpart, the FL-101.

Top class Mike!
Thank you Mate.
Would a variac have helped, when you first turned it on?

Just the rectifier board at the time of recording, The FT101 is now with G5STU as he wanted to do the recap... :)
Now that is a Great sounding radio. What was that messed up relay mod all about anyway ?
awesome work Mike. I have a boat anchor ....Kenwood TS-520s....it needs tubes and a ceramic capacitor...... I am in over my head... so it sits for the moment.

11 meters

@@PeterKings hi Peter, yep, I still have to finish the work on this 101…. One day. Cheers
where is the sequel? the transmit repair/align video? and what was the mod? to switch in an extra crystal?
Still awaiting to be made, and yes to switch in an extra crystal or 3
Nice radio mike, did you have help with it,and as it had a full service in side,if so was the alignment way off .
No help with it yet, but I will need some soon as I get deeper into the do's and do not's of the radio.

Hi Mike you should build a dummy load if you haven't already and throw it on youtube!
Nice job troubleshooting.
It would have been nice to know what the mod was supposed to do.
It added 75 Metres and 11 Metres to the rig.
@@mike-M0MSN : Nice !
I always put a towel down before I remove the case
A nail blimey ! I thought you only put a nail in place of the main fuse after the electricity company had cut you off🙂
lol
I need someone to fix my FT101. Can you do it, Are you in the US?
UK, :(
On my FT-101EE, unless I have the Heater switch ON, it won't transmit....what could it be? Thank you everyone for your thoughts and advice.

i mention ham radio's in some random video and now they suggest this 😂
Well welcome anyway.. :)

Music sucks on your video
I love the way you said you were given it...that's what I tell the wife as well, shame it is unlikely to work for me with a 7300 😁 de m0tfy
I've been given an FT-757GXii (my first HF rig) plus tuner and an FT-817.
dont recap just for the sake of it,at least test the esr,i find most recap kits have shit quality fake caps, better keeping originals if the esr is ok.
