I like Mikes take on being a mechanic, it never hurt to mention other things and if he wants to give a little labor away, it's his shop his business.

That job, I would do plugs, plug boots, air filter, tb cleaning, coolant, oil change, Pcv valve if it has one. And charging a little for labor is more than justified since you are warrantying the job. What if 1 new spark plug is bad. You are tearing it back apart for a no labor charge part you installed
I personally try not to swap out working oem parts for aftermarket parts.

Customers bring you their cars because they either dont have the time, the tools, or the knowledge to fix their own cars. Explaining to them the benefits of "while you're in there" items and giving them the choice is the way to do it. I think you're doing your customers a valuable service. Unfortunately not all shops are ethical, which is why the industry has such a bad reputation.

another good one Mike, I just did rockers and a cam on one with 170k and yes it still had original plugs still in there!!, I got plugs oil and air filter was going to replace that stuff even if the old ones looked ok, but it looked like it was needed badly, I had the ok to do the oil cooler but it was ok I thought replacing it now was going too far

As an undocumented mechanic, agree with the while I'm in there and it's close to aging out of they purchase it I'll put it on/in, recently did a pads, rotors(inside hsd a nice wide groove going),upon removal of calipers noticed now that the piston was coming out crooked and it took a little force to push in(bleeder was loosened for this)so customer notified and replaced caliper, emergency/parking brakes also gave trouble removing rotor(nothing big just a brake clean and lube) returning the vehicle recommended that unless she's parking on a hill and it's not a manual to try and not use the parking brake, they were happy and gave me a fifty dollar tip for doing extra that other shops wouldn't care,,, now work and service all three of their vehicles.

That's the way to go. You've got to be on top of your game to build customer trust and get those repeat clients!

I always recommended spark plugs on engines where manifold has to come off for anything if they are close to due..
Nothing wrong with absorbing a little labor as the owner. I wouldn’t ask an employee to do so. Consider it advertising

I think one of the hardest parts to change While You're in There are the evap hoses. Especially if they are discontinued and you have an older vehicle. Then you have to be creative and Jerry -Rig your own

That "making bank" strategy you speak of is a favorite of Nissan dealers. If your VQ35DE is losing oil, just bite the bullet and have a speed shop install a JDM engine imported from a Japanese junk yard. When does it legitimately become while you're in there replace the whole engine?

There's a limit to things you can't get too carried away! I recommend things that are either having an issue or maintenance items that are due or soon to be due. In the end it's up to the vehicle owner if they want to do the work I don't pressure I just recommend it and advise.

I've done many and have had a few break in there, but there are remedies for them nowadays. I don't see that many out there anymore!
