I love this tradition and it’s history so much. I’m American and only learned about Krampus in recent years but I’ve completely incorporated it into my Christmas festivities. Last year I had a Krampus inspired Christmas party, which ended up being the best christmas party I’ve ever had, with some of the best Christmas memories I’ve made. Such a fun (though slightly concerning) tradition.😂
Okay but growing up in a German family and getting candy on St. Nicholas day and then going to French class and getting MORE candy was a highlight of high school. Also Gruß vom Krampus! ❤️
That's only when you get lucky lmao. Most of us here just get beaten to sometimes near death by blackout drunk men dressing up in scary masks. Not very fun tradition for most.
I love when they go together. I want modern Christmas to have them as a dynamic duo. Krampus would be the tough love figure the almost saccharine sweet Claus needs by his side to remind him some children are terrible creatures. Creatures who listen to the devil and need a good beating. I see Mrs. Claus making sweaters and mittens for both of them and then laughing when Krampus inevitably gets them stuck on his horns. Most of the reindeer ignore him but for some reason Blitzen just loves the guy.
So the good kids get presents and the bad kids spend eternity suffering in hell. You know in order to balance it out then Santa should drag the good kids to Heaven.
At least its a one up from the last video they did on Krampus, where they claimed he came from Norse Mythology and was the son of Hel. I honestly have no idea where they got that fact from, but there's nothing true about it haha.
Nope, I can confirm that it's also celebrated in Croatia. I'd also imagine it's celebrated in places that used to have strong Austrian and/or German infuence (ex. Austro-Hungarian Empire).
I'm German and I never even heard about Krampus until a few month ago. The legend is probably more common in southern Germany and/or Austria & Switzerland.
When my mother was a child, the Perchten often came riding on horses and they literally took people with them for a few kilometers, but most often they just hit people with rods. One time tho when a Krampus tried to hit my mother, she grabbed the rod, took it from him and beated him until he ran away😅 Thats how it's used to be in some parts of Austria
I’d love to see one of those Krampus runs they look so much fun and he’s nice to small kids shakes their hands and most wise thing he dose is steal their hats lol but the Krampus costumes and masks awesome
Krampus is known in the region, where I live, however our counterpart to St. Nikolas is called „Knecht Ruprecht“ (loosely translates to Vassal Rupert). He’s basically the same thing. Sometimes depicted as this kinda monster, sometimes as a man dresses in dark (brown or black) dirty clothes, with a long, black beard. He also beats naughty kids with a birch and not quite as naughty kids get a piece of coal as gift.

I grew up with a Krampus like figure and good lord was I scared for who knows how many years. This one particular song about this character would make me cry and hide, it mentions stuff like "he'll slurp your blood." And I remember that the most popular version of the song had creepy sound effects, like an evil laugh and a bear cry/roar. It's very strange to see how my younger siblings aren't growing up with him... I guess it became unethical to scare your children to behave🤔 now elf on the shelf has been getting more popular, to my disappointment...
Hey, German here, never once have I heard of Krampus. Those costumes look really familiar tho, I think sometimes they're part of the "Fasnachts-Parade" here. I just think it's hilarious that people are like "Ah yes, what a German tradition" but I have never heard of it before haha
