Maybe sometimes it looks like this, but sometimes he's just rude. A brazilian comedian interviewed him once and when the guy tried to make a scene for the show, he just said he wouldn't do it, saying he wasn't getting paid for that, so he wouldn't work for him. The interview didn't last long and then it didn't even go live. He's not a kind person at all.
Welcome to the wonderful World of us Austrians, we never put on a fake smile and talk behind backs, simply because we are rude right away. Also, don't expect an Austrian man to work if he isn't getting paid for it. And while we're at it, we love to complain about everything at our work, but in the end we still do our job well. :]
+Victor Bernardes He was trying to do letterman where he repeats silly jokes over and over just to get a laugh! He is talented but his behaviors should not be on The Late Show as host

namenlos40 It really is Traumatisation. In Germany its the same. Scary stories to stop kids from doing bad stuff. Even for me as a German I think it's pretty f***ed up. I'm glad no one told me them as a kid.
He never really gets a chance to get going, because Fallon continually interrupts him, changes the subject, and tries to turn everything Waltz says into a ba-dum-tsshh joke.
You know jimmy fallon fake is so boring when he has no idea how to do improptu comedic act, just stick to cards, play with dolls, and just fake laugh at nothing, unlike conan.. gosh.. late night and comedy has never been this low.. because of this kind of "entertainment"..
Don't take Austrians too serious, they have a very special kind of humor, they call it "Schmäh" and if you don't understand it you think it's very rude and arrogant, but it isn't, it's meant in a lovely way, it's kind of being extremely sarcastic without showing being sarcastic .After a while in Austria you'll figure it out. Christoph Waltz is enjoying this 100%.
I think in Europe it's a pretty normal thing, I mean I'm Hungarian, and I understand this kind of humor perfectly. We swear a little more (okay a lot more😂) and look at the past, present and future a little more bitterly and hopelessly, but that kind of humor is here too and I enjoy that Christoph Waltz has that kind of humor.
3:30 I don't think I've ever seen a clearer depiction of "the immense gap that exists between the very bottom and the very top of a scale measuring intelligence" than Christoph beginning: "You have to remember that Sigmund Freud was-" only to get interrupted by an unfunny chat show host with the attention span of an untrained dog going: "HEY Y'ALL.... HEY Y'AAAALLLL" whilst playing with dolls.
"You have to remember Siegmund Freud was Austrian and" therefor attending this tradition, and with all his knowledge of the human mind still didn't disapprove it... unfortunately I had to guess that last part :( tnx jimmy
You definitely aren't the only one my friend. Jimmy brings out dolls and started playing with them while Mr. Waltz did his best to not walk off the set.
the issue is that fallon pays more attention to his audience than to his guests. this particular instance is especially cringey to watch cause mr. waltz is obviously an intellectual and unlike his interviewer actually has something interesting to say. instead of listening to his guests' responses fallon proceeds (much as expected) to lack any degree of conversational intuition, just idiotically parading around a stuffed elf designed to distract 4 year olds while exploiting waltz' culture for cheap laughs.
watching this is so weird to me because I'm from Austria and literally everything he says makes 100% sense to me, I grew up with this. It's so weird to see that something to logical to me sounds so absurd to someone else's ears. Culture is a weird thing.
Nah, auch in Brandenburg werden den Kindern die Geschichten über Knecht Ruprecht erzählt. Zwar eher von der älteren Generation und er hat kein so großes Gewicht, aber man weiß immerhin, dass es ihn gibt. :D
I always get the impression from Americans that they have no desire to learn about other cultures unless it's either to mock or to find novelty in them. This whole interview with Christoph explaining his country's traditions is Jimmy just searching for joke material to use. Christmas has been prevalent in Austria far longer than it has in America- keep that in mind, "y'all".
***** I'm actually Austrian, like Christoph. And did you mean his remark on lenience and permissiveness? Because he actually says 'thats not funny'. Because it's not. He's complimenting you. English isn't my first language and I can understand better than you. You americans are so sensitive despite being so dismissive to other nations.
***** 'Perhaps that was intent?' That WAS his intent. And the Las Vegas thing is a joke. I'm not american but everyone knows that Las vegas is a place to gamble, drink and have sex. He's just making a disgusted face because he's acknowledging that humorously. You REALLY have to stop being so picky. But every day i see americans saying that they think their country is number 1. Everyday I see americans push other cultures aside for their own. I dont hate america but you have to be really stupid to not see this too, like in this interview for example. Nobody actually listens to Christoph because they just want more jokes.
***** are you going to keep taking everything i say and just copying it and reversing it and thinking it's a valid point?... Your original argument was that Christoph insulted America first in this interview. I proved you were wrong. So I'm done here.
First most of us don't care if you don't like us. And I have met many people who loved Americans. Theres a reason why we have the most immigration and I love that. I love different languages and cultures. NYC is the place to be.
@@witchblade1969 Agreed there are great people everywhere, although when someone sais the dont like Americans, i think they often just think about the US state because it is pure evil, but ordinary people arent guilty for that, but thats just how things work, one on the top must crush one on the bottom, coming from a Serbian guy we often get a lot of hate on the Internet because of certain stereotypes, but ive never met anyone irl who felt bothered by the fact I'm from Serbia
This is what I don't like about Jimmy Fallon - he doesn't know how to adapt to his guests. He bounces off people like Bradley Cooper and Channing Tatum very well, but has no idea how to speak to people like Christoph who hold themselves a little more seriously. As a result, he just comes off as disrespectful.
I am so fucking excited that he is in the new James Bond. Definitely one of my favourite actors. He is fluent in French, English and German. What a guy.
I wish Jimmy would stay quiet for Christopher Waltz. He's probably the best actor in the world right now and many of us are really interested in hearing him.
+TLydon008 I wouldn't say he's "the best." There's other actors who are just as talented and skilled as he is. Tom Hanks, Daniel Day Lewis, Jack Nicholson; just to name a few.
+TLydon008 i didnt know who he was, i thought he was maybe a krampus expert. im glad you mentioned acting now ill be on the lookout and know its a good movie if hes in it.
Agreed. Seeing him on here really shows his wittiness. He has that in all his movies. I really like this actor. Doesn't get a lot of roles though. But when he does they are pretty awesome.
Finally a man from Austria that I, as a fellow Austrian, am proud to watch having success wherever he goes. He's earned it. Great actor, sophisticated, charming and funny.
Christoph Waltz's mind reader 0:40 *this is so stupid, I can't believe it* 0:42 *Does he expect me to say something. Ok, I should say something*. ".... oh, really?". I am so sorry for him, this was painful to watch
It’s the moment he realises he’s talking to a child. Jimmy Fallon’s style is to force feed the zany cutesy kooky crazy loveable infantile class clown until he gets that laugh and he doesn’t care how hard or how long he has to work that angle to get it. It’s exhausting and oddly aggressive to behold.
The other one being Falco of course. Everybody was on vacation during the 1939-1945 period. Nothing really happened then. I have absolutely no idea who you could be referring to.
I was able to see the Krampus parades in southern Germany many years ago when I was in the US Army, and it is a great tradition that the people are striving to keep alive for their children.
I want to like this because Christoph Waltz was being absolutely charming and fascinating, but I also want to dislike because Fallon was being so bloody annoying.
As an Austrian I have to say he did an awesome job describing the tradition of 'Krampus'. I am one of those unfortunate people living in an area where teenage boys dress up as Krampus - let me tell you, it's actually pretty terrifying when they come running after you with their masks and bells.
@@vanessaprowse2448 The kids are growing up with this tradition and they know, there are only humans. And a little bit scared is also tradition growing up in Austria. It is a test of courage for the children to take part in a run. Parents don't force them.
We know the difference between american people and a talkmaster who's obviously paid for being what he is: simple :) everything's okay here :) best wishes from overseas to you. -signed, a German
@@bernhard4764 the flag of the Hanseatic League, so close. An alagmation of German speaking states and territories of yore. But yes the flag is of German speaking origin. Just an American proud of German heritage. And not wanting to be viewed as some dolt by the world. Take that for what it is lol but no country should be made a mockery of any kind. Idk just my humble opinion.
he said: "you have to remember, Sigmund Freud was Austrian." Being Austrian myself, I can only imagine it means, there is a reason, why Psychoanalysis started in Vienna, Austria, cause we are crazy traumatized people.. The crazy is big here :p that's my interpretation at least
That annoyed me too. And for that stupid "Hey y'all!" joke. But it probably had to do with how Freud described the good and evil duality present in human psyche. There's our basic, instinctual, animalistic desires, and then there's our idealistic vision for how'd we'd like to be and act. These two conflicting ideas are personified in Krampus and Saint Nicolas, or better yet, in the kids that they'd get, respectively.
Well, of course he exaggerated a bit, for the comedic effect. I remember never being afraid of Krampus, because even as a little kid I knew it was just a myth, but I still believed in the "Christkind", who is bringing the presents on Christmas Eve.
You´re brave! I´m Austrian and when I was a child I was scared as hell ^^ later my brothers and my Dad were dressed as Krampus and Nikolaus on the Krampuslauf and when they go from house to house. I´m teaching in Ireland at the moment - my heart even started beating faster when I showed the kids the videos of a Krampuslauf ^^ traumatised for life :D And the Christkind is veeery hard to explain to people who believe in Santa Claus since it´s not a "person". They have a hard time to understand what the Christkind is.
Lila Liefde I too was very scared as a child. One day our mayor and vice mayor came to our house dressed as Nikolaus and Krampus asking the parrents of the town if their children are nice and my Mum said "Well....I don't know" and all I was really scared she could say no and Krampus would take me with him.
"Universes part us - we're not a lenient, permissive culture like the US is" - His fluency and vocab are so much better than my own and I'm from England, where they fucking invented the language!
You know, usually I read the comments on Jimmy's videos about his fake laughs and how he interrupts his guests but I never see his behaviour to be a bid deal. But after watching this video (HALF of the video, considering I could not get through it) I can now see that Jimmy does NOT understand that his immature jokes are sometimes inappropriate. Christoph Waltz is clearly a very talented, intelligent, and highly esteemed man and it would be nice to actually hear what he has to say instead of listening to Jimmy's attempt at childish humour. I feel the need to apologize to Christoph for Jimmy's behaviour. So embarrassing.
+raptor rodger I have always asked the same question. I do not see Fallon as a funny person. He's just a guy who moves excessively when he laughs and has 1 or 2 semi-funny lines. I guess he's the perfect replacement of Leno who was equally "funny".
+Evi1M4chine "He’s very obviously a psychopath" what the actual fuck dude.. He meets and talks to entirely different personality's every fucking night.. He has to be nice and pleasant even if he gets nervous around some people who might not be as easy going, it is his damn job to do so.. Christoph seems to be someone who is not easily impressed nor easy to get a laugh out of.. I have seen much of Jimmys work and he is not a fucking psychopath... He fucking loves what he is doing, he loves it and we can see that he indeed loves it. You can't throw around such a strong and disturbed psychological disorders as psychopathy just because you think someone tries a bit harder to level with someone else... A full blown psychopath would not profess as a talk show host where you have to show emotions all the fucking time, do you even fucking know what psychopathy is?
I'm from Austria and this is normal for me, we are raised with this. Strange how the cultures differ here, with that puny elf lol. I live in the city and here the Krampusses also have a parade and hit people a little bit, sometimes more than a little bit, but it's nowhere close to what happens in the mountainous regions ^^ Maybe some Americans find it strange but this is tradition to us and I like it! ;)
Carinthian mountanious regions born and raised... Oh what fun it was to tease those who were the Krampus, then run away with up to 10 of them chasing behind. If you got caught you got slapped pretty hard, but if you got away you would just sign up for another "hunt" :-D ...
Grace Charles yes, he is. Have you seen him in photos as a younger man. He was insanely attractive and I'm straight. I think Im still am after this commentary haha
Gambit1984 Well, consider that most of your country is in the alps. That means that, until the 20th Century, you didn't get in or out of those valleys until spring. You didn't do your chores back then, there was a really good chance that you and/or someone in your family would *die* over the winter.Pretty much explains why Krampus and the other Perchten were so harsh in their punishments. Because the reality of what nature would do to you was much, *much* worse.[Das ist also was mein Mann mir erzaehlt hat. ;)]
This is probably one of jimmy's first guests who actually wanted to have a serious interview and not just blindly laugh at whatever. Also, what Christoph was talking about, that reminded me of what Dwight did near the end of The Office with that impish or admirable guy. Haha except I think what Dwight was talking about was Dutch.
+Parsa I doubt they did that after seeing this interview, unless you can find a source. Krampus has had some recent popularity in Western culture as of late, so it could just have been from all this exposure.
the director has said that the movie has been in production for years.hes a big fan of the dark sides of holidays. if you ever get the chance watch, trick r treat,it's a great Halloween movie.
I wouldn't have been surprised if Waltz handed him a box of crayons and colorbook, after he pulled out the stupid doll... Interrupting him in the midst of a serious conversation.
+Beartallica86 Highly recommend. Look for Krampus parades (aka "Perchten") in Upper Austria or in Lower Bavaria, they usually have very, very impressive parades with beautifully crafted costumes. It really is a sight to see.
Krampus really does creep me out. I really like the grim nature of their tales. Its so weird that it scares me but i still find it intriguing and still look more into it.
as a tyrolian i would say christoph waltz ,unlike a lot of austrians, is very polite precisely and a gentleman and you see the difference in humor between fallon and waltz. Waltz has the kind of humor wich gets produced by saying something very serious (also meant serious) but at the same time its fummy because its true but crazy. And fallon has the IQ 70 being drunk kind of humor.
Conan is the red hair guy. I prefer him and other talk show hosts over Fallon. Compared to other hosts, Jimmy Fallon isn't that witty, smooth, or that great of an interviewer, but his "hysterical"personality somehow appeals to mainstream audiences. I never liked him on SNL either. Just too giggly, 1 dimensional, and awkward. (not the good kind of awkward like Conan) He seems like a silly kid, and not a sophisticated show host. I guess the reasons we dislike him are actually the reasons most people like him. They find him adorable. Plus his games with celebs are instant viral youTube fodder. He really owes his production team big time for saving his ass
LOVED this interview... I can't believe more people have not heard of the Krampus. Hope now that Jimmy covered it, word spreads! Merry Christmas! Frohe Weihnachten!
In Germany Knecht Ruprecht helps St. Nikolaus, but he is nowhere near as scary as Krampus. Check out videos here or google it...the masks are awesomely horrifying. As far as I know, the closest thing to Krampus happens in the southwest corner of Germany where there's a tradition of wearing masks and costumes during Fasnet (Mardi Gras). Every little town has their own masks and costumes. As a kid it's beyond exciting to be part of this for a week each year.
he still wacks naughty children with his sack of coals/ashes =) but yes here in north germany we have knecht ruprecht. i think krampus is only present in bavaria (speaking about germany)
Northern bavarian here, we had Krampus when I grew up. But at some point Knecht Ruprecht became "more polpular", not quite sure when or why that happend. Ohh, but recently I was at my local Supermarket and they sold Milka St. Niklaus and Krampus, thought that was pretty great, needless to say I bought one :D
i'm austrian, and this was the first time i could laugh about "krampus" ! but only because of this "HEY Y'ALL!" shit. i'm 19 and still get panic attacks when i see a or even hear a krampus.
Mein Absolutes Lieblingsfest! :D
Haha I love Waltz's descriptions of Austria, they are so true. We are very strict and always complaining, barely happy and if we are, we don't show it. We have wierd traditions which nobody has and are even proud of it. We generelly dont like other people but we seem to be very polite to them because we are double-dealer. Well, we are very cynical and sarcastic too, also mischievous. If other people are straitened, that makes us happy! But as I said, we wouldnt show it. To shorten it, we are just a terrible people, without exception.
Not all of us are like this, but those who aren't, usually leave the country. ;) I have never considered myself to be a proper Austrian, simply bc I am not mischieveous, or cynical. I prefer the more "lenient" American tradition, in this sense. Naivete isn't always a bad thing, mind me. We should have more of it- it makes people better.
haha truuuue...but the old people are the worst when it comes to being rude.the most awkward thing is walking into a cafe in vienna and have all the old grandmas staring at you and complaing that teenagers are allowed to enter a cafe...ha ...but sarcasm is the best though
naive: "having or showing unaffected simplicity of nature or absence of artificiality." aka wearing no masks. makes people better. in the long run..and things much easier in the short run.
I've never had much of an urge to learn how to speak German more fluently than just the school basics, and I always regret it when I hear Mr Waltz speak.
It's weird to me to see how people from other counrtries react to our tradition. To me the Krampus is the most normal thing ever. And the thing he mentioned with men dressing up in actuall wool, wearing big wooden masks and getting drunk and running through the village is not only a Krampus thing. We also have those creatures called "Perchten" who look nearly the same as the Krampus and there are like big events called "Perchtenlauf" (Perchten-run) where big groups of people put on wool suits and wear big wooden masks too and have like kind of a parade, I guess, where they go through the village or town at night and many people go there to watch them. It's an old ritual that in the past was used to chase away the winter and cold weather so the farmers could start planting again.
Christoph Waltz is a great actor. Jimmy, you don't really have to tell people that Krampus isn't made up. Some of us use our heads once in a while and know a few things.
Can't get over the fact that this man is actually 58 ... I have to say it this man is definitely the sexiest man in the whole fucking universe. 58 !!!! He looks like a god for fucks sake, fucking God of hotness
MrTony354 you know nothing of the Dutch tradition, so dont give me that 'according to the Dutch crap'. Live here first, celebrate it, learn the history, and THEN you may comment on Sinterklaas.
TheVechtersbaas so defensive! i have friends who are dutch and they showed me photos of themselves dressed as black pete so dont give me your you tube crap and tell me what i can and cannot comment on.
Black Pete has the same origin as the Krampus I suppose(bad cop, good cop), unfortunately some idiot in 19th century decided to give him cloth like African servants were depicted on 17th century paintings. But most Dutch do not associate Black Pete with slavery nor do they point fingers at black people saying that they must be Black Pete. In that sense it is not intended to be racist.
It's hilarious to see all my fellow Austrians commenting and the Americans don't even care anymore. I think it is the first time we are in the majority xD This interview just shows that Austria is awesome. We have Krampus, Nikolaus and the Christkind and still hold onto these traditions while the States have Santa Clause whose clothes got colored red over time because of Coca Cola. That shows how much the economy has a say in the US (e.g. Black Friday, which is sadly and slowly making its way to Austria) plus the multicultural background is of course another factor (ok one might argue that our economy does not have that much power). Und zum Abschluss merke ich noch an, dass es mir leider die Ganslhaut aufgstellt hat, als Christoph Waltz das Wort Krampus ausgesprochen hat, denn das klang mir doch sehr piefkenesisch.
why is the multicultural background a bad thing? but yeah the black friday thing is true like thanksgiving is not even celebrated in our country simply because it is an american holiday but we "celebrate" black friday this is so fucked up
piefkenesisch was ist das für ein Wort?! xD Das kann aber auch daran liegen das er aus einem anderen Teil Österreichs kommt zb haben die Tiroler einen ganz anderen dialekt wie wir Salzburger ^^
Alice alicee I didn't mean that a multicultural background is a bad thing. Just meant that there are a lot of different influences concerning holidays and traditions in the States, but that's just the history of the country. I'm sorry if my comment came across as negative in that particular point, I did not intend it to sound that way. The Austrian Guy piefkenesisch - Deutsches Deutsch :) Einfach ausgesprochen, wie es ein Deutscher machen würde - was natürlich auch mit seinem privaten Hintergrund zu tun hat.
I used to have an art instructor from the Czech Republic and he always told me that he was afraid of Krampus during Christmas as a child. I also remember though that he told me that he thought the Germans took the Krampus aspect of Christmas a little too far.
What Waltz was talking about is so normal to me :-) We just had krampuses here, the really scary ones, running through the village and trying to scare children. It's a whole Central European, Alpine region thing. Remember the original Grimm stories, they were not "and everyone lived happily ever after" :-)
I don’t understand why they have to do it this way. Honestly I am from Mexico and I live in Austria. First time I’ve watched this tradition I was kind of shocked and fascinated and also I understand maybe people may like it or not because as a Mexican we have traditions that here are strange. But this guy interrupting and mocking about the Tradition is so disgusting and disrespectful.
It’s possible the reason Jimmy is so rude to Christoph is because he’s intimidated by his intelligence. Or because he tried to keep things light on the show. Then again, I’ve never found Jimmy particularly funny, more annoying and boring. Like I don’t understand, why would you invite a guest on a show if you won’t let them talk? And laugh at their culture. Sad isn’t it? Happy holidays everyone! X
I'm Austrian and I have to say that Krampus is one of the most awesome traditions all round the world. In the mountains there are krampus-festivals in nearly every village or town, where people dressed up as Krampus go through the streets and hit people. Me and most oft my friends are Krampus as well. It is really popular here in Austria! :D
Christoph Waltz is literally the first person I've ever seen on TV saying "That's not funny" to the audience without trying to cause another laugh

I feel like Waltz's personality is misinterpreted an awful lot, he's far too smart and quick for people to catch up on and spot the dry humor.
the issue is that fallon pays more attention to his audience than to his guests. this particular instance is especially cringey to watch cause mr. waltz is obviously an intellectual and unlike his interviewer actually has something interesting to say. instead of listening to his guests' responses fallon proceeds (much as expected) to lack any degree of conversational intuition, just idiotically parading around a stuffed elf designed to distract 4 year olds while exploiting waltz' culture for cheap laughs.
watching this is so weird to me because I'm from Austria and literally everything he says makes 100% sense to me, I grew up with this. It's so weird to see that something to logical to me sounds so absurd to someone else's ears. Culture is a weird thing.
In Saarland, Germany we call him Knecht Ruprecht
Culture is the real thing :;
Or the arrogance of thinking your culture is the best and everyone else must comply with it - like the Americans does.
Das ist so übelst lustig anzusehen wie keiner checkt was er meint😂😂😂
How is this absurd !? This is totally fine and I am not even European :D
"You have to remember Sigmund Freud was..."HEY YY'ALLLLLL, HEY Y'AAAL"
Damn you Jimmy, i wanted to hear :(
...Sigmunt Freud was Austrian
Stela Dragova Yes, yes and I bet an Austrian could add something more to that comment
No.. It's just a pretty good place to explore crazy people.. That's us.. Nothing else to say
schatzdrum Maybe you know your people are crazy, but I as a 16yr old girl from Bulgaria can only think of world geniuses from there :)
interneda98 there's a thin line between genius and insanity :)
As a German I know and love this tradition. We also have something similar that is called Knecht Ruprecht in Baden Württemberg where I live.
Jup, den kennt anscheinend keiner
Oh Great News Hello i From Brasil
Ich fand Knecht Ruprecht immer gruselig 😂😂
Yes, in Bavaria too. 😊
Nah, auch in Brandenburg werden den Kindern die Geschichten über Knecht Ruprecht erzählt. Zwar eher von der älteren Generation und er hat kein so großes Gewicht, aber man weiß immerhin, dass es ihn gibt. :D
Can You let Mr. Waltz talk please??
The Zoombot28 My thoughts exactly!
no!!!!
Agreed. You really blew an opportunity, Jimmy. You cut him off every time culture arose. Effing elf on a shelf??? Tard
Yesss
He probably does that on purpose coz he knows that American people don't give a rat's *ss about culture, so he doesn't want his ratings to go down
I always get the impression from Americans that they have no desire to learn about other cultures unless it's either to mock or to find novelty in them.
***** Oh you speak german?
***** Hahaha Ich weiß, Sie verwendet Google Übersetzen, aufhören zu lügen
And Americans are still asking why the rest of the world doesn't like them?
I'm Moroccan and I love Americans. Go watch Conan O' Brien for some real fun instead of this douche and don't think all Americans are like Jimmy.

What a guy.
Isn't he the new Bond villain?
Max Mustermann He's playing a villain but I don't think it's the main one. Either way, he's definitely in it :)
oh sorry, I read "is the new Bond"
And Italian
Juan Guajardo Suárez He is not fluent in Italian, he said so in a different interview
I want to listen to Cristoph Waltz talk about absolutely everything.
+That's What You Get For Waking Up In Vegas he's tied with the best right now. he's ridiculously good.

Indeed
***** What about Dr. King Schulz? Or his real personality?
Agreed. Seeing him on here really shows his wittiness. He has that in all his movies. I really like this actor. Doesn't get a lot of roles though. But when he does they are pretty awesome.
Agreed.
That's why he won an Academy Award for it!
3:32 Christoph: "You have to remember that Sigmund Freud was..."
Jimmy: "Hey y'all."
Embarrassing
Finally a man from Austria that I, as a fellow Austrian, am proud to watch having success wherever he goes. He's earned it. Great actor, sophisticated, charming and funny.
and he can talk in english :D
He really is.

i saw it on his face too. poor guy.
makes me wonder why Jimmy invited him, if he didn't want to listen to his answers at all.
+redToffifee me too :D
It’s the moment he realises he’s talking to a child.
Jimmy Fallon’s style is to force feed the zany cutesy kooky crazy loveable infantile class clown until he gets that laugh and he doesn’t care how hard or how long he has to work that angle to get it. It’s exhausting and oddly aggressive to behold.
let poor Christoph talk

Christophe Waltz Tries To Explain Krampus to Jimmy Fallon
Austria going strong. We gave you Arnold, Christoph, Mozart and.... well, another one.
The other one being Falco of course. Everybody was on vacation during the 1939-1945 period. Nothing really happened then. I have absolutely no idea who you could be referring to.
Adolf and Josef? :D
Christoph Waltz is the reparation for guys like Conchita Wurst and uncle Dolf.
The one with the beard? --> Conchita (Queen of Austria) :)
Maybe Sigmund Freud or Billy Wilder
Hay Y'all....Christopher: "Oh, really." That sums it up for me.

3:30-3:34 we could have heard something truly interesting regarding Sigmund Freud, but instead...ohh well....
Thought exactly the same! What a nasty interruption!
Well, all he wanted to say is that Freud was Austrian I guess...
Fallon always keeps interrupting his guests, that's just the way he is.
Sukrim he said that but than he wanted to say something more, I guess thanks to jimmy we'll never know.
Hahaha! I wanted to hear that bit too. I was hoping he would bring it back up.

+Bria Brown I thought it was only stupid. Rude would imply that they knew what they were doing and made a choice.
Nuuu itz nawt rude xD itz funnyyy xD
Greeting from austria c:
It would have been better if Conan interviewed Waltz. Jimmy doesn't deserve him.
MelvilleReads on the flip side, Conan just made a skit with the Krampus
I was in Hallstatt recently and saw it. Had never heard about it before. I was very scared as an adults. No idea how kids deal with it
Schrecklich!
@@vanessaprowse2448 The kids are growing up with this tradition and they know, there are only humans. And a little bit scared is also tradition growing up in Austria. It is a test of courage for the children to take part in a run. Parents don't force them.

Thank you very much, Jimmy. Thanks to you, I'll never know what Waltz wanted to say about Freud.
he said: "you have to remember, Sigmund Freud was Austrian." Being Austrian myself, I can only imagine it means, there is a reason, why Psychoanalysis started in Vienna, Austria, cause we are crazy traumatized people..

Im Austrian, and thats TRUE!!! I never thought it is so...... crazy hahaha It was like "normal" when I was a kid..
same here
Well, of course he exaggerated a bit, for the comedic effect. I remember never being afraid of Krampus, because even as a little kid I knew it was just a myth, but I still believed in the "Christkind", who is bringing the presents on Christmas Eve.
same here:)
he should have told them about the Christkindl too
You´re brave!

So embarrassing.
why does Jimmy always try so hard to be funny? he wasted the time he had with Waltz
+raptor rodger by far the best response to this video I can see so far.
+raptor rodger I have always asked the same question. I do not see Fallon as a funny person. He's just a guy who moves excessively when he laughs and has 1 or 2 semi-funny lines. I guess he's the perfect replacement of Leno who was equally "funny".
+Evi1M4chine thank you. good to see this.
+Evi1M4chine "He’s very obviously a psychopath" what the actual fuck dude.. He meets and talks to entirely different personality's every fucking night..
I wanted to hear what Waltz was going to say about Freud and how it all intertwined with Krampus or Austrian traditions and customs !!
I'm from Austria and this is normal for me, we are raised with this. Strange how the cultures differ here, with that puny elf lol.
I live in the city and here the Krampusses also have a parade and hit people a little bit, sometimes more than a little bit, but it's nowhere close to what happens in the mountainous regions ^^
Maybe some Americans find it strange but this is tradition to us and I like it! ;)
Also I can tell you, with the Krampus in mind I was being the best kid possible around December ^^
Carinthian mountanious regions born and raised... Oh what fun it was to tease those who were the Krampus, then run away with up to 10 of them chasing behind. If you got caught you got slapped pretty hard, but if you got away you would just sign up for another "hunt" :-D ...

You didn't do your chores back then, there was a really good chance that you and/or someone in your family would *die* over the winter.Pretty much explains why Krampus and the other Perchten were so harsh in their punishments. This is probably one of jimmy's first guests who actually wanted to have a serious interview and not just blindly laugh at whatever. Apparently someone watched this interview and then decided to make a fucking film about it!
+Parsa I doubt they did that after seeing this interview, unless you can find a source. Krampus has had some recent popularity in Western culture as of late, so it could just have been from all this exposure.

Krampus really does creep me out. I really like the grim nature of their tales. Its so weird that it scares me but i still find it intriguing and still look more into it.
Jimmy my man dont cut him off bro. It's entertaining to hear Waltz talk.
I fucking love Christoph Waltz. What a cool guy.
as a tyrolian i would say christoph waltz ,unlike a lot of austrians, is very polite precisely and a gentleman and you see the difference in humor between fallon and waltz. Waltz has the kind of humor wich gets produced by saying something very serious (also meant serious) but at the same time its fummy because its true but crazy. And fallon has the IQ 70 being drunk kind of humor.
I would have just shut up and listened to Waltz, sounds pretty interesting. Also members of the audience seemed a bit rude to Christoph.
Do people actually enjoy the host's humour?
i definitely do! i think he's great
+Mershell I like the red-hair guy but this one... he's a bit too hysterical (imo)
freshta
100% perfect explanation. I have to keep it to myself how much I dislike him among my mainstream friends. They love him, and I don't get it.
Cristoph Waltz must be the sexiest over 60 years old man i've ever seen.
We also have Knecht Ruprecht in Austria, I remember Krampus the be more of St. Nikolaus antagonist, that's also why they come on different days.
Christian Tsches Don't forget the Perchten :D
he still wacks naughty children with his sack of coals/ashes =)
but yes here in north germany we have knecht ruprecht. i think krampus is only present in bavaria (speaking about germany)
Jakob Horvath haha would've bought a whole krampus army to rule all of christmas=)
but i'm not a christma guy so that's no surprise
Bless your patience Christoph

VitruvianVision naivete makes people better? no, thank you! i'll stay with cynicism and mischievousness then ;)
naive: "having or showing unaffected simplicity of nature or absence of artificiality." aka wearing no masks. makes people better. in the long run..and things much easier in the short run.
VitruvianVision haha me neither, I am too relaxed for being an Austrian but I think that I have a quite good sense of sarcasm :D

Christoph was a true gift to this show!

This man is delightful. I adore him.
And in Belgium/The Netherlands that Krampus figure is Black Pete (Pete's role is a bit different, he isn't as frightening)
Yeah - thats than the funny thing for us Austrian.
yeah, black pete was Santa's slave according to the Dutch and people dress up in black face as him!! yikes!
I think it is the first time we are in the majority xD
This interview just shows that Austria is awesome.
Und zum Abschluss merke ich noch an, dass es mir leider die Ganslhaut aufgstellt hat, als Christoph Waltz das Wort Krampus ausgesprochen hat, denn das klang mir doch sehr piefkenesisch.
why is the multicultural background a bad thing? but yeah the black friday thing is true like thanksgiving is not even celebrated in our country simply because it is an american holiday but we "celebrate" black friday this is so fucked up
piefkenesisch was ist das für ein Wort?! xD
Das kann aber auch daran liegen das er aus einem anderen Teil Österreichs kommt zb haben die Tiroler einen ganz anderen dialekt wie wir Salzburger ^^
Alice alicee I didn't mean that a multicultural background is a bad thing. Just meant that there are a lot of different influences concerning holidays and traditions in the States, but that's just the history of the country. I'm sorry if my comment came across as negative in that particular point, I did not intend it to sound that way.

I used to have an art instructor from the Czech Republic and he always told me that he was afraid of Krampus during Christmas as a child. I also remember though that he told me that he thought the Germans took the Krampus aspect of Christmas a little too far.
00:23 "that's not funny" ouch he does not mess around !
What did he say before that? I couldn't understand
What Waltz was talking about is so normal to me :-) We just had krampuses here, the really scary ones, running through the village and trying to scare children. It's a whole Central European, Alpine region thing. Remember the original Grimm stories, they were not "and everyone lived happily ever after" :-)
as an austrian this is so fun to watch
Im from Germany and I laughed my ass off when he was cleaning the table after Christoph said Krampus :D
As an Austrian I love these videos
same 😂👌🏼
My great grandfather grew up with Krampus since he was Bavarian
how rude to laugh at someone's culture
Exactlyyy😓😓😓😓😓
I don’t understand why they have to do it this way. Honestly I am from Mexico and I live in Austria. First time I’ve watched this tradition I was kind of shocked and fascinated and also I understand maybe people may like it or not because as a Mexican we have traditions that here are strange. But this guy interrupting and mocking about the Tradition is so disgusting and disrespectful.
@@DiegoHernandez-cd3og do you have an Austrian girlfriend??
yes @@JoseBeBoxingFr
@@nadashash2701 no don't worry! It's fun! They are just joking! Austrian people have a great sense of humor! 👻👻👻
Did anyone think this was Ellen from the thumbnail?
I happen to also thought of that when I saw the thumbnail for Peter Cetera - Glory Of Love. ;)
I was just thinking the same thing. haha. It looked exactly like Ellen.
omg YES! was not expecting anyone else to tho lol
Ahahaha, now I see it! :D Well I recognized him and that's why I clicked it, but I do see it now. :D
Totally!!!!
Well said
I'm Austrian and I have to say that Krampus is one of the most awesome traditions all round the world. In the mountains there are krampus-festivals in nearly every village or town, where people dressed up as Krampus go through the streets and hit people. Me and most oft my friends are Krampus as well. It is really popular here in Austria! :D
That just sound like people getting drunk and assaulting people. We have the same thing but it's slightly different.
This is so bad. Let the brilliant man speak.
