sounds like they were also targeting women that "no one would miss", like older women with no families. sinister.
Yeah like "guys!! A widow with no kids!! let's burn this one, no one will make any drama she has no family"
Ikr, it’s horrible
@God Emporor of Florida Rick Scott relax man, witchhunting were targeting women especially who wouldn't submit into society serving men. Women who lived outside the city, tried to make an income by themselves or had knowledgy over natural remedies
Yes, they were more likely to be targeted but it wasn't just them...it was all women. If you can, check out a video about the Malleus Maleficarum. It a very influential book on witch hunting from the time and was also incredibly misogynistic. Basically the case was that women, no matter their social status, were spiritually inferior and thus vulnerable to becoming witches and even made the most basic of things, such as women talking to each other, a sign that they might be witches (since, by their reasoning, a woman can't keep a secret so if Satan gives her the capabilities of a witch she'll tell other women and spread witchcraft and devil worship in her community). Essentially making women even having friends, not only suspicious, but actually a threat!
They probably thought a normal woman cannot survive all alone so she must've been a witch

Also medieval men: Why do we keep dying? If only there were people out there who knew about medicine

As much as I love Shane and Ryan I realize that doing the same thing forever isn't something they both seem like they'd wanna do and both of them are onto new things in their life now. It’s sad that a big part of prosecuting a witch involved not understanding science.
More like : not believing a woman can know anything. MOST of the women accused were medicine folk who used herbology, but a learned woman in those times is a dangerous and obviously witch woman

Herbalists challenged the growing medical institution, the which kept control of healthcare in the hands of those with money...
Coastal Animist that’s false. This idea that herbalism would make you accused of being a witch is completely false. Herbalism was used as the main source of medicine for most of the population. Modern medicine is well, a modern invention?

It was so sad as to how easy it was to accuse people of a witch and how easy it is to stacked against you. If nikola tesla was alive then, they would call him a witch
I mean they kinda did but in a different way.
I think they mostly targeted women.
@@vaanipapadakis2226 there were maybe one or two men that were suspected of being witches but the vast majority were women
Isabella Rocha not exactly. In some countries, the majority of the accused were men, and not women (I believe Iceland is one such example).
While yes, the witch trials accused a lot of women, it was also about the poor, the elderly, the disliked, and the disabled. This idea that the majority of the accused were “intelligent and independent women” is feminist rewriting of history and ignores the fact that the accused were usually uneducated and poor.
When I was younger a boy called me a witch and when I told my birth mother she said that that doesn’t mean being evil and that witches are good and have helped people for millennia so really it’s nice to see a video with actual facts about a religion that is usually seen as evil or wicked but in reality there are many different types of witches
i think witches are so cool and are just as normal as any person. ofc, i'm scared of "bad" witches but i've never met one before and the few i've seen on the internet seem lovely !!
There was a sort of male equivalent of witch trials at the time, Werewolf trials like that of Peter Stubbe. Those stories are just wild! 😼🐺
Those weren't the same....the term "witch" is gender neautral, regardless of being male or female you are called "witch".
The werewolf trials were just that: hunting for werewolves. As in they beileved werewolves actually existed and men who were believed to be werewolves were hunted down. HOWEVER this happened ALONGSIDE the witch trails. So it was a double whammy: you could be accused of being a witch, a werewolf, or both if you were a male between the 16th and 17th century
my family used to think I’m a reincarnation of Rebecca Nurse because I grew a HUGE fascination to the Salem Witch Trials from elementary through middle school and still now.. i have always been fascinated about Salem and Rebecca nurse. what do witches do?
@@corneliali7747 it really depends on your path but it usually involves meditation, manifestation, and some form of practice. Witches practice witchcraft, which again is different for each path so there isn't really a straightforward answer, but it can include spells, potions, baking recipes, specific manifestation, and much more. @Shaun Rooney Yes and those poor men were killed by men, Sofia's comment never said anything about the gender of the victim
@Shaun Rooney I didn't say they weren't? But in this witchcraft case, it was men. And a simple look at history shows it's mostly men. AGAIN i did NOT say women have never harmed anyone, 'mostly' does not mean 'all'. Please read carefully.
@Shaun Rooney Also no ones laughing, stop twisting words
damn there really were a LOT of ways to get someone killed without directly murdering them back in the day huh

Okay, so if anyone is interested in knowing more about the Swedish witch Märit (not Märet) Jonsdotter, I have some conflicting information compared to what was presented in the video. My information comes from the book "Häxornas försvarare: Ett historiskt reportage" (Eng: The Witches' Defender: A Historical Reportage" by the famous Swedish author/journalist Jan Guillou, who in turn took much of His information from a Swedish historical doctorate thesis. So, here is some of the conflicting information:
1. Gertrude, the girl who accused Märit, didn't have a physical altercation with the boy. Instead, she helped goats they were herding cross a stream whilst the boy could not (he was younger and smaller), which made him lie to his father about her walking on water and such. It was to protect his male pride.
2. Märit was actually a maid (don't know the English word for it, but it is "piga" in Swedish) at the girl Gertrude's family farm. Gertrude's father wanted to marry the young Märit (only 19 years old att that point) after Gertrud's mother passed away. Gertrude allegedly didn't like it and was sent away, so she was in a different village than Märit when she accused her of being the one to teach her witchcraft. In other words, she likely just accused Märit because she held a personal grudge against her.
3. Märit actually claimed her innocence many times, and was let go because of it. But she was still executed a few years after the initial accusation, despite still claiming her innocence and never admitting to the accusations, making her stand out among many witches, since many were inclined to confess under different types of pressure.
So those were some of the discrepancies I reacted to. I don't know which source is closer to the truth, but I can only assume it's Guillou because, well, he's Swedish... Still, a really interesting video. I understand it's difficult to get everything right with so much information in one video, especially when it's made in the other side of the world in a country that doesn't speak Swedish. (Which basically means every country except Sweden itself and partly Finland...)
In a last note for those interested: Sweden stood out in the European witch hunts since almost all of the key witnesses and the forces of the people driving the witch hysteria were children.
It's too long to read I'll live not knowing

Skip to the end then hit rewatch. You're welcome
SERIOUSLY and my friggen WiFi has been buggy it’s taken me a whole hour to get through this
@THE TWO FINGERED BRUTE gimme money and I'll get premium lol.
@@kingragnar8023 thank you
I love that they add the corrections for the misconeptions of witchcraft. It makes me feel understood
This video has this witch's seal of approval! Wonderful info on new age witches as well as our sisters of yore. Blessed be to all the witches in this comments section : )
I need to see the boys go to Utah, for the skin walker ranch.
witch hunts are an unusual yet huge thing around the world. reading about the conditions under which these were made, such as the small ice age that happened during the Salem witch trials is fascinating.
The theory of the witch trials beginning due to boredom / having someone to blame is cruel but IMHO the theory that makes more sense.
As a witch I'm actually quite impressed at the accuracy in this video! 😊
I love at the end the video talks about modern witches. I am Wiccan and a witch and it's nice to see my culture being validated.
It's refreshing to watch a video about the witch trials that acknowledges the existence of witchcraft and it's purpose.
It often makes me wonder how many were accused of being witches that were just merely ahead of their time with their knowledge or abilities.
So many more witch stories in scotland than that, we have had everything spooky
as a witch thank you for informing people of our history
Imagine getting healed so well by someone that you get them killed...
THE SPOOKY SHOW IS BETTER. "History was not kind to women"
Men were also executed as witches.
True that
@@JCM217 Time and time again, when someone says a minority had it bad people go "But Also Men" "But Also White People" "But Also Christians" like... we know, no one said otherwise, we're talking about Us rn... shut up
@@elkarocky862 No, you intentionally leave out those details to fit your leftist narrative.
You missed the Pendle Witches - the biggest witch trial in England
As a modern witch, I greatly appreciate the information given at the end if this video. I still encounter people who thing I worship the devil😂😅
IKR! We witches don’t worship the devil! Some Wiccans chose to be bad but not all! Blessed Be honey!
@@jenniferdoan6394 That's true! Blessed be!😊
as an actual witch i was very happy to find this to be factual rather than opinion based, i especially liked the part of the video that disproved stereotypes about us
thank you for not bashing my community lol
Hearing him trying to pronounce the french and swedish names is very funny. However, I do appreciate the effort!
as a pagan i am either gonna to love this video or hate it. we’ll see
Update: overall pretty good, however i wish they went more into depth about the history of witchcraft instead of just going over witch hunts and alleged witches. The ending addresses someone of these but it’s rather short and doesn’t fully explain the idea of witchcraft. also if i remember correctly Satanists also don’t worship the devil. if you’re interested in witchcraft i recommend looking up the history of paganism because you can find many of its roots in witchcrafts. you don’t have to be pagan to be a witch either, but it will give you some insight.
Mood
Omg same thoughts as I clicked the video
@@batsnghostz how tf is that a mood tho?
Yup
same here, we'll see how the video is
My great grandmother (several generations back) was tried and found guilty during the Salem witch trials.
As a witch I do not worship the Devil
I am not a Wiccan
I do not use wands or cauldrons
I do have multiple spell books and use tarot cards
I don’t have a coven
I am not evil
I do not hex or curse people
I do make protection spells
So far no one in my recent family is a witch (though I may have some ancestors that were)
Oddly enough I am a woman that struggles to conforming to society but that’s not because I’m a witch
I do exist proof that witches exist.
I am one of many. I don’t wish harm on others and I’m not here to force my beliefs on people. But if anyone wants to know about my practice I am happy to share ^.^ just please be respectful.
Also I don’t have green skin
I don’t melt when water hits me
I do have a cat but not all witches have cats
I don’t have a crooked nose or a hunched back.
I don’t look like a crazy old blind crone
I don’t fly on brooms though I wish I could.
I don’t eat children for eternal life spells like the women in Hocus Pocus
I am not afraid of religious symbols such as crosses
I don’t burst into flames when walking on blessed grounds
Holy water does not burn me
I don’t talk to demons. I dislike demons. Demons attack me and I wish them to be gone.
The devil is not my friend. I don’t associate with him.
And uh for the fun part as a witch I study and respect many religions because I believe in respecting others and I like to learn.
Also no I don’t dance nude under the full moon light although truthfully I can’t say that doesn’t sound amazing 😂
my tiny witch heart is crying i love this
I'd be prosecuted in these times not because I have a brilliant mind but because I have a birthmark on my stomach.
witch is actually a gender neutral term, I have never heard anyone call themselves' a warlock outside of movies.
Guy: This girl beat me up, so she must be a witch!
Bruh lol
I appreciate the notes towards the end of today's witches. Is much appreciated from a Wiccan
Can y'all start citing your sources in the description or something? I really would love read about this stuff in more detail, I've never heard of most of these people
Thank you for adding the misconceptions at the end
When no one else is allowed to do their job or have success because people are obsessed with Ryan and Shane. 👀
It's true, our one rule above all is "harm none and ye do what ye wish" I think its a much better philosophy to live by, other religions over complicate, or exclude others for no reason.
The salem witch trials ended when they tried accusing the Governor's wife of being a witch.
