HOW did Jesus become THE KING OF THE JEWS?

  • The point is to show you-expose you to-how the New Testament is informed by the Old. It’s not always a simple quotation of the Old Testament. Sometimes, there’s an entire backdrop. There’s an entire set of worldview elements or practice that get repurposed in the New Testament. For example, the Gospel writers dip into the Israelite kingship accession process intentionally to portray Jesus as passing through the series of stages that legitimize kingly rule. And knowing that helps us get more out of the Gospel presentations of Jesus’ life. Check it out!

Inauguration day for the kings of Judah was on the feast of Trumpets (the last trump when He comes in glory and the dead in Christ are resurrected), which is also the civil new year Tishri 1, Rosh Hashana when Yeshua was born (Sept 11, 3 BCE).

Wow! At the moment I heard Dr. Heiser say "The crucifixion was His coronation" -- I felt a wave of joy, reverence, and awe sweep through my body. To put it in this way shook my innermost being with emotion and gave me a new awareness. How upside down was his kingdom! How he triumphed over the rulers and powers in it!

How amazing is the Providence of God that God would fool the god of this world and humiliate him by allowing him to think that he was defeating the king when in fact the god of this world was inaugurating the king and ushering in the death of sin and his own demise.

@@Praise___YaH - Thank you for your reply. I reverence the Name of the True, Living, Life-giving God. Over decades, I have seen the Name he gave go from Jehovah to Yahweh to Yehovah to Yahuah. I have seen the Son's name go from Jesus to Iesous to Yahshua to Yeshua to Yahushua.
From all these variants, I have clung to what I call "The Divine Root": YAH. It was preserved in the praise that all believers have uttered and you included in your exposition: "Hallelujah!" Or, as you wrote and I have written at times - "HalleluYAH."
I was challenged by one commenter that the name is "Yahuah" and if I didn't accept that, I was as much as lost. I confess that it bothered me for a day. I did not feel so convicted to reject all the other versions of the Divine Name and responded in part, "If you push me too hard, I'll start to suspect an ulterior motive."
Scholars wiser and more erudite than I have passed along their best guess at the Divine Name. One lady did say that the Holy Spirit revealed the Name to her in a dream: Yahuah.
I do not mean to mis-call God, so I hang on to YAH. But as I've been texting here, I have remembered that whoever believes that Jesus Christ is the Son of God, God dwells in him and he in God. It doesn't say that we better get His name right or we're going to hell.
I believe anyone who is serious about this faith will be open to correction as we draw closer to the Truth. I do not believe God will reject anyone who did not know His name was Yahuah as long as they understood that LORD was used where His name should have been.

The way Dr. Heiser explains passages in the Bible and the meaning of the symbolism has helped to amplify and enrich my understanding more than I can say.
I'll be forever grateful to him for the incredible body of work he left for all of us. His passion for the Bible and understanding of ancient history lead him to become the best teacher I've ever encountered, not to mention how he honestly strips away any systems that get in our way of understanding "the text"! His Naked Bible podcast is a treasure trove for anyone wanting to learn.
The revelation of "the devine council" is but one of the major contributions he has made to my understanding (The Unseen Realm).
May his family and friends find comfort and peace knowing that he is currently mingling with the divine council and able to see our Lord face to face. God bless you Dr. Heiser, your family and all who worked with you over the years to produce all the content you've given the kingdom. Bless you Trey for all those NB podcasts too!

This is so awesome! There are so many levels of sort of behind the scenes going here. Another one which I find very interesting is the whole thing about Jesus on the cross, took upon Himself the sin of the world but also the curse of sin which we see that the Roman soldiers crowned him with a crown of thorns for which we read all the way back in Genesis that what happened in the environment was part of the curse which brought forth thorns and thistles. So it’s like the Roman soldiers were mocking Jesus by putting the crown of thorns on Him but also in a religious sense “for which they were well unaware of that they were doing” they were placing the curse of sin upon Him with the crown of thorns.

"God’s gospel concerning his Son is a message about God -the one true God, the God who inspired the prophets -consisting in a message about Jesus.
    [God’s gospel is] a story -
A true story - about a human life, death and resurrection through which the living God becomes king of the world.
A message which had grasped Paul and, through his work, would mushroom out to all the nations. That is Paul’s shorthand summary of what ‘the gospel’ actually is.
It is not, then, a system of how people get saved. The announcement of the gospel results in people being saved - Paul says as much a few verses later.
But ‘the gospel’ itself, strictly speaking, is the narrative proclamation of King Jesus. (NT Wright, What Saint Paul Really Said)"
Wright has been condemned for saying this for years among the evangelical soterian crowd.

I don't think the Gospel writers realized they were accounting the passion in the context of the traditional path to kingship: it was the inspiration of the Holy Spirit. And the Holy Spirit has given us - today - this insight.
This past year, or less, I've been pondering the relationship between Love, volition, and suffering. I have a younger brother who is better than I am at considering such issues.
God is Love. Love created us and gave us volition - free will. Having free will means that we can reject Love - and we have. And we suffer - cut off from Him, hurting each other, living in a world corrupted by our rebellion - almost hell on Earth. We suffer.
We cannot reconcile, as Neil deGrasse Tyson might put it, "an all-powerful, all-knowing, all-good God" with the suffering He permits. It's not always the "reap what you sow" suffering. Children born to starving mothers haven't sown anything. And natural disasters like earthquakes and windstorms and droughts and pandemics hit folk who have tried to be good and tried to do good all the time. Why suffering?
One popular song asserts, "I know that the sorrow, I know that the hurt / Would all go away if You'd just say the word...."
Yet, God didn't spare Himself unimaginable suffering. No parent should see his child die, yet the Father watched His Son die. Jesus didn't just prove Himself in the Wilderness Challenge. He was proving Himself as a child, a youth, and a young man growing in stature and favor with God and man. And the ones who hailed Him on Palm Sunday were crying, "Crucify Him!" a few days later.
God suffers. Are we not commanded to "Grieve not the Holy Spirit?"
I never looked at the Passion in this way. There is a passage that says the Captain of our salvation was made perfect through suffering. In Isaiah, I believe, the prophesied Messiah is described as "a Man of sorrows and acquainted with grief." I sometimes say, "well-acquainted with grief."
"And now abideth Faith, Hope, Charity - these three: but the greatest of these is Charity." It doesn't say suffering abideth. So, why suffering?
One of my pastors has said, "Love is always a choice." Is the inevitable consequence of granting choice - suffering?

    "The path to kingship"...

Assuming that anything in scripture is not added and there is none taken away. There is allot we don't really know cause we are looking to men, their books and their speak for the answers. If you ask The Father for wisdom and know you will receive it, you will. You will also learn much on the way and that there is much deception out there - some deliberate some not. Do you really want to stake (no pun intended) your life on it? Have you noticed that everyone pretty much says the same thing and claims the Bible is the inspired Word of God? That is quite a stretch. I Have been deceived once, twice and never again. It is up to each of you to seek Him and He will show you the truth. You have so much power in prayer, if you realize it. You can remove demons from others. Most pain and suffering is from them. It does work! You have to belief and have the faith of a mustard seed.
Matt 17:20 And (The Anointed One) said to them, “Because of your unbelief, for truly, I say to you, if you have belief as a mustard seed, you shall say to this mountain, ‘Move from here to there,’ and it shall move. And no matter shall be impossible for you.

Then he said not my will, but thy will be done. Also John 3:16 saids, for GOD so loved the world that HE gave his only begotten son. I'm not downplaying or discounting your question; believe me, I have my own. But when I'm challenged on issues such as, why did these 66 books become the Bible; or why did God let Jacob "win" in the wrestling match; or, what Name did God share with Moses at the Burning Bush; or Who did Joshua meet before the Battle of Jericho; or how can we be predestined to be saved and still have free will?
Many questions will challenge you, confuse you, frustrate you unless you remember that God has called us by His Holy Spirit and we have to rely on the Spirit for revelation and enlightenment.
So, ask the Holy Spirit - and I will do the same. And let us believe that He will answer us - in His time.

John was the son of a priest and a priest himself. Christ had just become 30 years old and was now qualified to become a priest. So I think being baptized by John was His induction into the priesthood.
He knew no sin so His baptism was not about having repented of sins.

How can one be 100% sure that he/she is 'saved'?

    • @mbfrommb3699
      @mbfrommb3699 3 роки тому

My understanding of the Gospel is this. It means "Good News"
      The problem:
We are imperfect people who bring death to ourselves, each other, and the planet.
We think mainly of ourselves, we hate and tear down others and we wreck the planet in our pursuit of pleasure.
We are sinful and as I understand it SIN it is what we say, think, and do that brings death to our reality.
If we look at the Bible not simply as a rule book but a guide book maybe it'll make more sense.
Why is lying a SIN? Because it brings death to the friendship
Why is Adultery a SIN? Because it brings death to a marriage
Why is anything a SIN? I understand it as something that brings death to myself, or someone else and distances me from God.
Proverbs 18:21 says Death and life are in the power of the tongue, And those who love it will eat its fruit.
God knows we are all imperfect, selfish, broken people, every one of us because our human nature are these things and from that nature, we choose to act on our impulses.
There is also a kingdom of darkness that is trying to get us to destroy ourselves. We are very capable but they also like to encourage us along.
1 Peter 5:8 Be sober, be vigilant; because your adversary the devil walks about like a roaring lion, seeking whom he may devour.
Ephesians 6:10-12 10 "Finally, my brethren, be strong in the Lord and in the power of His might. 11 Put on the whole armor of God, that you may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil. 12 For we do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this age, against spiritual hosts of wickedness in the heavenly places."
God made us, and He knows we have this nature of death in us, He loves us.
He loves every person that has ever existed but because we bring death to others, and His world, we deserve death.
We all know we have lied, and hurt people
1 John 3:15 says "Whoever hates his brother is a murderer, and you know that no murderer has eternal life abiding in him."
The Bible isn't about a Judgemental God, it's to show us a mirror of ourselves. We all know we aren't good people because we hurt each other and hate others. We hate others for who they vote for, or who they love, or because they have things we don't, and many more reasons. We SIN against each other and when we acknowledge that we are sinners before a Holy God. We begin to understand the "Good News" of Jesus.
The next verse 1 John 3:16 says "By this we know love, because He laid down His life for us. And we also ought to lay down our lives for the brethren."
Romans 5:6-8 6 "You see, at just the right time, when we were still powerless, Christ died for the ungodly. 7 Very rarely will anyone die for a righteous person, though for a good person someone might possibly dare to die. 8 But God demonstrates his own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us."
      Jesus said in John 3:16-17
16 For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life. 17 For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but to save the world through him.
      So we are Sinners.
We can't ever be perfect or holy because we bring death
We deserve death for the way we tear each other down. BUT GOD!!
God loves us, God knows all that we have done and all that we will ever do and He says He loves us so much that He came in human form and lived a perfect life, not guilty of anything and willingly died a cruel and horrible death in our place.
Rose again from the dead conquering death and will one day return as KING OF KINGS and LORD of LORDS.
We cannot earn God's favor Jesus has already paid the price in full, the death penalty has already been served.
The easiest way I can explain the gospel is that if you and I are best friends and I lie to you and you find out how do you feel?
Do you feel hurt? Betrayed? I'm sure you would. Now if I said "yeah, but everyone lies, it's no big deal" what would happen to our friendship? My guess it would be over.
However, if I said "I'm sorry, I was wrong. Can you please forgive me?" Then there is hope that you might forgive me.
God already knows what we've done and the Bible says Jesus paid the price in full. We will be forgiven.
We simply accept His gift to us and say Thank you, knowing we can't ever repay Him for it.
Romans 3:23-24 for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God, 24 and all are justified freely by his grace through the redemption that came by Christ Jesus.
Romans 6:23 For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.
How are we saved? Romans 10:9-13 9 "...that if you confess with your mouth the Lord Jesus and believe in your heart that God has raised Him from the dead, you will be saved. 10 For with the heart one believes unto righteousness, and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation. 11 For the Scripture says, “Whoever believes on Him will not be put to shame.” 12 For there is no distinction between Jew and Greek, for the same Lord over all is rich to all who call upon Him. 13 For “whoever calls on the name of the Lord shall be saved.”
John 1 says . 12 But as many as received Him, to them He gave the right to become children of God, to those who believe in His name:
      How can we be sure?
1 John 5:11-13 11 And this is the testimony: that God has given us eternal life, and this life is in His Son. 12 He who has the Son has life; he who does not have the Son of God does not have life. 13 These things I have written to you who believe in the name of the Son of God, that you may know that you have eternal life, and that you may continue to believe in the name of the Son of God.
I hope this helps. Take care.

@@incorectulpolitic When we express something it comes out from the heart. The verse simply means if you believe this in your heart to be true then you say "I believe in Jesus"
There's nothing magical to it. Do you believe Jesus is LORD? If you answer "Yes" then you've confessed it.
For me, I have always believed in God. God's existence has always made sense to me. It was Jesus a guy who lived 2000 years ago that I had a challenge with. I came to believe in Jesus because of how He predicted the future. I began to learn about Bible Prophecy about 25 years ago and saw how the world was changing and how the world the Bible described was becoming our world. I have spent almost my entire adult life since age 24-43 today in the world of finance and geopolitics. I believe in Jesus more today than ever before. It hasn't always been easy but He has always let me know He's there with me. At 16 when I was really struggling I battled being bullied which brought on depression. after years of being bullied, I reached the point of suicide, but I didn't want to die so I cried out to God to save me. To show me what was real. Nothing miraculous happened, no great voice was heard. Except I'm still alive today. I know Jesus saved my soul and my life, I wouldn't be here today if it wasn't for Him.
If you search out God and honestly seek Him you will find Him. He gave me the faith I needed to believe and the evidence to support that faith. I never even knew where to begin to look. No one taught Bible Prophecy 25 years ago except for a few people, yet God through a television program watched by my Grandparents showed me evidence to believe.
God knows your heart, He knows where you're at and He loves you. Don't worry about what you think are the does and don'ts of religion just be honest with God about where you're at and don't be afraid to ask for help.
I have wrestled with God many times over trials in my life, over hurts, over beliefs, and not feeling I measured up.
No one but God can tell you whether you're saved or not. If you believe in Jesus as paying the price for you and that He is your only hope when you stand before God then you're saved.
Many people say you need to do this or that and live this way and that. Much of that is our own human traditions.
Jesus said, "you believe in God, then believe in me also."
We all struggle with faith at times, no one believes all the time. Yet, God is there and He loves us even when we fall, because we will fall down a lot. I hope this helps you, but I wouldn't worry, the fact that you have asked these questions means you'll be fine.

I sent an apology letter to the one I bullied... Would it matter to you if your bullies sent you an apology letter? How would that make you feel?
At 21 years of age Jesus revealed to me the world wide deceptions of the new age movement, the ''alien'' movement/religion and more... would you feel comfortable to chat on skype or through email privately, do you

God’s “very good” model for relating to His creation was presented Genesis - His S/son representing Him and executing His will on earth (see Adam as son of God in Luke 3:38). Adam failed, one “son” down. Next son, Israel (Exodus 4:22, “Israel is My firstborn son”). Israel also failed to live up to the model declared “very good” (Isaiah 5:7cf). In Luke 3 Jesus is baptized and God declares ~”You are My beloved Son, in You I am well pleased”. Finally, a Son to live up to the “very good” model presented in Genesis. Note the occasions in John’s gospel when Jesus declared His close relationship with His Father (e.g., Therefore Jesus answered and was saying to them, “Truly, truly, I say to you, the Son can do nothing of Himself, unless it is something He sees the Father doing; for whatever the Father does, these things the Son also does in the same way.”
John 5:19 NASB). Consider that Luke placed Jesus’ genealogy after Jesus’ baptism. Also, Jesus faced the ~satan after being pronounced as the one who ostensibly fulfills the role of S/son in the “very good” model, another Adam.

HE may have to meet DEATH, in order to prove also, that there is NO DEATH?

Meet Death? He created the Death Angel.
The Angel of Death was given dominion over the loves of those who are outcast and condemned.
He defeated Death by Faith and Obedience (the Old Torah systemic law).
He returned those who accept the Redemption of the Atonement through the Sacrificed Saviour on the Cross. The Father defeated Death through the Son.
It's a complicated theological doctrine, but the Gospel is not complicated. Men make it complicated by explaining it erroneously.

Jesus' path to kingship: 1. At 1:12 his selection and empowerment (anointing of the Holy Spirt} at his baptism. 2. At 2:36 the demonstration of his kingship (in ministry). 3. At 8:36 the willing crucifixion is the Coronation as his greatest achievement over evil (proven by his resurrection from the dead).

To be King you must be a son of the previous King. In this case the previous King was David and Christ is the son of David. The book of Matthew begins with a record of the linage from David down to Christ - proving Christ is a legitimate heir to the throne. So in a sense, the first book of the New Testament introduces Christ as King.
