Thank you for this review! I am planning to buy an e-ink phone but seems that e-ink phone that's been sold nowadays has old Android versions. Hoping that this yr there will be an e-ink phone that has the latest Android system ^^
Yea… glad im decided to wait for Boox to come out with their competitor device, the Boox Phona C or whatever they end up calling it. A Palma like device but with kaleido 3 color eink and 4/5g cellular connectivity… hopefully in white too haha.

Thanks for your great video. I just spoke to bigme and they told me that by the end of this year or early 2025 there will be a new eink smartphone model with android 14.
Yeah, I suspect so as well, probably at the end of the year.

I recently had an experience with my phone that I'd like to share. While I love my phone, I dropped it from just 50 cm high and it suffered some serious damage. The quality of the finishes seemed really poor, and I even had to resort to gluing a small piece of plastic back on. Despite this, I still believe it's a great phone, but it's quite slow due to the processor. Additionally, the current version of Android 11 doesn't support the native ChatGPT application. I hope these issues will be addressed in the next version because I'm really looking forward to getting it.
I bought the black and white version. Set your mind what do you want from this phone. If you want replacement for galaxy or iphone , it's not for you. I bought intentionally to detoxify my digital addiction . It's was better than any dumb phone, convenient ereader, inconvenient for media and internet. That's the point. I used for two days and already halfway on my reading with occasional productive youtube and a few songs. And sport tracking app, very good in sunlight. I never get rid of my iphone, just left it at home waiting to be used occasionally when in need. Maybe my screen time won't reduce much, but it won't be on something useless. And whatsapp is a must.
The most detailed review of the Hi-break i have seen so far. I assume no NFC for payments on the phone and forget using Banking apps? - that's the deal breaker for me. Thanks
seems like the issues can be solved via a software update. I ordered the B&W version 2 weeks ago .. still waiting for the unit to be shipped .. I hope bigme is committed to improving the user experience.
For me the idea of an e-ink phone is a phone that has great battery life (weeks), but this is worse than regular phones. Which is interesting as it suggests screens aren’t actually the biggest drain on battery life. Too many compromises. Good review.
Well I thought that was already common knowledge - oled and modern LCDs are pretty darn efficient and the only advantage of e-ink is that it's easier on the eyes. There is a reason why your phone's battery drains even when you don't use it and the screen is off. The processor, wi-fi, Bluetooth and GSM radio are the main culprits. Until we get those things to become ridiculously efficient, your dream is not coming true. I'd even argue that for the next couple of decades, it will be impossible.
@@icipher12 A Hisense A5 lasts at least 2 weeks. It is just they try to run videos when this is not asked for which drains e ink too. So the 5 year old device is still the best. @reilly-vc1rm they might, but not as much as people think (especially amoled etc). The point is - if you want a phone that's going to last weeks, e-ink isn't going to help much when you've got all the other necessary components draining the battery. A regular smartphone is still going to die in about 3 days even if you do not touch it at all and the screen is off for the entire time.
@@icipher12 Just disable those "necessary" components (wifi/ bt/ location/ all background google sh#t) and you will be surprised how long your battery goes
Dear Chalid, thanks a lot for this very interesting and informative rieview. I wish to ask for your advice on the following issue: I want to use the Bigme Hibreak with gps navigation, e.g. on my bike. Should I buy the the b/w or the color version? The b/w version has a much higher resolution, but I expect the color version to display different landscapes in a better and more easily recognizable way (e.g. lakes or rivers in blue colour instead of in a grey shade). On the other hand, the resolution of 90 ppi is very poor (as your review showed at 5:08). Which phone should I buy?
I'd say the resolution isn't a huge issue in this case, because you'll most likely need to use Google Maps with the Fast or Extreme E-Ink display mode, which reduces image quality already. Using that the difference between the resolutions isn't that obvious anymore. Colors are definitely a plus in Google Maps, but keep in mind, that the colors are not especially vibrant and even when tinkering with the settings, it's not a huge difference to the B&W version. The short clip at 15:15 should give you an idea what I mean. That's the Hibreak color with Google Maps in direct sunlight.
@@ChalidRaqami Thank you for your reference to 15:15. In this sequence it is not possible to differentiate the road "Thalstraße" from the creek "Thaler Bach" by color, because both are displayed in similar grey shades. I expected an e ink color smartphone to be the perfect gadget for outdoor navigation because of the good readability in direct sunlight, but for this purpose, the vibrance of the coloring is not good enough. Moreover, you mentioned at 13:32 that this device does not have a built in compass. That means I can't use my preferred outdoor app "Komoot" with this phone since this app requires a phone's compass to determine and to display the direction.
It seems they rushed this out without much thinking of the consequences. Android 11 is a poor choice in my opinion, not having a dedicated speaker or headphone jack shows lack of thinking. Not sure if the type "C" port is able to handle an adapter dongle for headphones. I am not thrilled with the battery life and connectivity issues. I live in the US and wonder if I will be even able to connect or use my cell provider at this point. Furthermore, I am really looking to switch away from my Asus ROG phone📱which is old at this point, but its 6k battery can last me for about three days with heavy phone use without recharging it. So at this point Bigme has missed the boat once again for me and I can only assume for many others as well, truly a lost opportunity here.
