- Dr. Patrick Soon-Shiong, the executive chairman of the Los Angeles Times, offers an overview of our special series, The Science Behind the Coronavirus. In this introduction, Soon-Shiong (MD, MBBCh, MSc, FRCS (C), FACS) proposes that understanding how the virus infects our bodies and strategies toward treatment can help us allay our anxiety about it. Soon-Shiong is a surgeon and scientist who has spent his career studying the human immune system to fight cancer and infectious diseases. He is also the chairman and CEO of NantWorks and the owner of or investor in a number of companies, including ImmunityBio and NantKwest which are currently researching immunotherapies for COVID-19.

SARS-Covid-2 has from the SARS then like other virus, isn’t this Covid 19 (aka SARS-Covid-2 ) suppose to weaken them, not stronger or more infectious!?!? Seems there was a gain-function and specific targets!!??

I am amazed at Dr. Soon-Shiong's ability to make me understand the complex subject step by step. Also, I am shocked how some people can dislike this video when the community is going thorough a hell.
It is not about his capabilities, it is all about the statistics what he had given. He picked up statistics from Chinese government bulletins, which is absolutely fraudulent and fudged.

I've watched it two times and can't get enough of it. I haven't scrolled down to see any 'dislikes' as it would really be disparaging to see any comments by anyone who don't like this. How can you not? Without looking at any of those comments, I will assume that the people who claim they "dislike" this are either very ignorant or lack any intellectual brain function to understand what their community is going through.

It should be broadcast worldwide so that we are truly on the same page relative to the understanding of the disease and potential treatments. I generally listen to Dr. Facucci and Dr. Gupta for honest scientific explanations and certainly NOT to our political leadership, who don't understand science at all. I put you in the same league with Drs. Faucci and Gupta who are honestly and scientifically giving lay people the straight scoop. Kudos to you!

(a) This video requires some knowledge of biology and familiarity with cell biology. So everyone will not understand it in a equal way. Knowledgeable ones will be excited, while the others may find it quite boring. That because the science presented here is a little bit of complex to be understood.
(b) For who those cannot understand the full science presented here have got a vital role to play as well. Follow the advice the professor has given.

They won’t allow you to get tested unless you’re basically showing severe symptoms, so even if there are no symptoms you can still be a carrier and pass it on to some who will become critically ill. EVERYONE must get tested symptoms or not, this is ridiculous

Fabulous presentation which has now been assigned to my high schooler and middle schooler here at home with me. I’m encouraged by the science and grateful to all who have gone before us facing the challenge of fighting and prevent he spread of this virus. Unfortunately I have had to correct some xenophobic comments lately from others. China isn’t perfect but they have experience with this and we need that knowledge!
A big thank you to Dr Patrick Soon-Shiong for this clear explanation of the virus mode of operation, what we can do individually to protect us or slow its propagation, and finally the hope of a cure and/or vaccine. As important though is the message that many countries are working together for the solution and that it would be best to also undestand that China has and is providing its knowledge and working with other medical researchers for a quick solution. Now is not the time for judgement but for cooperation.
