Hi Margarete, I just finished watching your video and it was very encouraging to me as a beginner to collage art. Your 10 points were things that I questioned myself about, and your answers were clear and concise. Thank you for taking the time to encourage others. My journey in to paper crafting is exciting and I look forward to encouragement from you and many of the other ladies as well. Thanx!!👏🏽👏🏽

In my opinion, collage art is a form of creativity. Creativity is from the spiritual aspect of ourselves. It is of great value and should not be dismissed.

This was SO good for me as a beginner!!! I'm almost 82, and have enjoyed crafting for years, but have just recently been watching people who do mixed media, journaling, etc, and am quite interested in collage (without the journals). Thank you for sharing this project with us ❤️

A lot of times when I am not so pleased with a collage, I find that when I flip through looking at past collages that I end up liking the ones I didn't like when I did them. This surprised me!

Yes! I agree…early on when learning to paint I was extremely judgmental of my work and threw so many away. When I began painting in a sketchbook and couldnt tear them out, when I went back looking thru the sketchbook I realized I wasnt as bad as I thought. And it inspired me to keep going and wait a few days or more before deciding how good or bad a piece turned out.

This was so insightful. I use the joy of creating like therapy. I love when the real world falls away and it is just me at play with paper. My craft space is my happy place. When the Dr noticed my blood pressure was high she said go to your happy place and I will retake it. I went to my craft space in my mind and my blood pressure was normal. That is the power of creating.

Thank you for this video, I needed this so much. My family doesn't understand my paper hobby. They laugh about it, which doesn't help my self-confidence. But because I have a lot of time (due to circumstances), I enjoy collecting paper for my collages and journals and making nice pages here. So thank you for your words which are a source of inspiration for me. love from the Netherlands 💜

Thank you for telling me that I don’t need a focal point! I have been collaging for a while now, and I’ve found my own style which I really enjoy. But I rarely have a focal point. All the other UA-camrs that I watch say that a collage must have a focal point. All this time I’ve been thinking that I’m doing something wrong. I’ve tried making focal points, but I’ve found it so limiting. I like the rule of threes, but somewhere I saw that a collage should also follow the rule of thirds!! The rule of threes works, but I find the rule of thirds way too limiting. You are so inspiring and so encouraging. I absolutely adore your style… it is very similar to mine but, of course, yours are far better than mine as I am relatively new to this. Thank you for your wonderful videos. Lots of love 🇬🇧❤

that's exactly how I feel about collaging. I think it's a great form of art. but at the end of the day it is like getting dressed. it's easy but some are just great dressers than others :) it's also a great a way to get your brain to warmup or get out of a rut or keeping yourself busy

Thanks for doing these videos Margarete. All your information is so appreciated by me. I started a couple years ago with wanting to make junk journals. While I enjoy making them still, I have discovered along the way that collage is my passion. I love it. I discovered you thru a junk journaler doing your challenge. That was a lucky day for me. Hello Margarete,
This year is my 30th year as an educator - no, not art - a special education teacher! But I can tell you are a great teacher; one who gives permission to others to be who and what they are. You inspire me. You encourage me. You educate me. Those are the hallmarks of a great teacher. I've watched your videos here and there. They don't seem to come up in my feed often, however, I turned 60 this year and my elderly parents, who I have taken care of for the last 12 years since my children grew up and moved out, have moved into a care facility at age 89. I'm now an empty-nester (even though I still teach full-time). I know I want to travel and though all my graduate work is in the field of education, my undergraduate work was in theatrical lighting, something very very creative, I was feeling a void. But after hearing you here again today I will use the medium of collage to explore and express many feelings long-suppressed by taking care of others. So, please forgive the verbosity. All this to say, "Thank you." I am grateful for your presence here.

Oh my goodness, what kind words! Yes! I really hope you experiment with collage and that it continues to feed your curiosity and enthusiasm. It can be frustrating from time to time, when you feel like things are not coming together. But practice does wonders.
Good luck to you, my friend. You are beginning on a new adventure 😉💜👍🏻.

I loved your information , I wish I had known that when I first started making collages 14 years ago . 7 years ago I lost one of my 5 children , he died by suicide ( it needs to be told ). After this I abandoned our studio and only recently i I began to do some art . Mixed media & collage are what I love .
Thanks for your great video . I signed up to newsletter but at this time I cannot sign to the classes , at 72 maybe is too late to change what is in my plate, financially or in other aspects. C’est La Vie , as my French teacher used to say . I greatly appreciate your teaching .

Collage is a collections of items that are not arranged. If you distract yourself from 'arranging' it helps. If it is too uniform you need to make it so it isn't uniform. If you are gluing papers so they are straight up and down or stamping a word so it is level, try turning the papers and turn the stamp at an angle and see if this helps. Do things in odd numbers also helps.

    • @MargareteMiller

This video is so inspirational. Thank you. I am a clinical hypnotherapist and the word that you were searching for to describe "getting lost in the moment, zen like, blocking out all else" is actually called a "flow state". :) A flow state occurs when you combine your consciousness with an action and thus losing oneself. Entering and being in a flow state is a balance between your conscious and subconscious where time actually seems to stand still. That is why it feels that time has not moved or has moved so quickly and this is where the term time flies comes from. Flow states are considered a deep level of trance also called hypnosis where you can block out almost anything. Thanks again.

Great video, Margarete! Such important points. I would say your 10 things apply to art in general as a well as collage art. The very best thing about your weekly prompts is that it does inspire practice…and stretches us out of things we would normally gravitate to in our work. Thank you for your sharing and inspiration! I’ve enjoyed my MM Challenge so much these last couple of years. I really appreciate you! ❤️

This is awesome i think we all put too much stress on ourselves and compare ourselves to other artists, we don’t all have the same style, mediums or even like the same things and we all started off as beginners, it’s about having fun and not putting things in our heads that we’re not good enough, i just posted my first video of my journal and it took me so long because i kept comparing myself, but i finally realised that although not everyone will find my journal good it’s my journal and i’m learning and growing every day, and i hope others will take your advice hun to just relax and have fun , Thanks hun xx

I totally agree with you, Lottie. It's so easy to compare yourself to others. All of us do things at different intervals, however, so we don't do things exactly the same. I think I take a lot longer that many to work on collage, but I'm ok with the longer working time 😉👍.

I worked the past 3 days on a collage on canvas with napkins. I started out with a completely different idea and it kept changing and changing, I did zoom out like many times when I work in my backyard. But I was very surprised how this collage came out even it was somehow a pain in the knee. I wished I had taken some pictures of the process since I don't make videos. Thanks for your encouragement they are dearly appreciated.

All your "things" are bang on Margarete! I have been doing collage for awhile now and have definitely noticed how much my style has changed (grown!) over the years. I recently started a destash of all my papers and am surprised how many I have "let go" because they no longer spoke to me with direction I am now going. As always you've done a lovely job with your examples and explanation.... 😊

    • @MargareteMiller
