I accidentally just discovered your channel. Love that you combine some history of the subject that you’re building, instead of watching some guy just building a model with bad background music that puts me to sleep.
Fast becoming one of the best modelling channels on UA-cam. I absolutely love the way you talk about your builds and mix in history with the video as well rather than just playing music over the top for the whole thing. Awesome job man and congrats on the 3rd place!
Nice bit of scratch building, cameras look good, inspection ports, and panels an added plus. Beautiful paint work. Modelers best and oldest friend, the sponge. I've got the Airfix 1/24th Typhoon and I'll get the 1/24th Hellcat, but the rest have to many mistakes to fight with. I love the Tamiya P-47 family and I'll fill in with Tamiya, Meng and some Eduard Luftwaffe fighters. Great looking PR bird. Congrats on the awards! BRAVO!
These days I fly real airplanes. When I was a kid I used the same brush, mixed the paint, used the same thinner over and over again, borrowed my dad's cigarette lighter to melt the parts to simulate battle damage. Sometimes I would use a vice and other tools from the garage to create certain effects. The end result here is impressive but it seems that I had more fun. I would spend hours on one model. I even copied Roger Dean and got a bird's skull from a bird our cat dragged in and substituted it for the nose of an SR-71. I had one of the first model kits they made in the 70 s and if I remember correctly it cost me a lot of money. Well, a lot of money for a 10 year-old kid. I painted it red and wish I still had it. I think it got thrown out along with my hockey cards after I left home. I like looking at some of these modern models that you guys put together but it just doesn't have the mystique and wonder that I experienced as a kid. The internet has taken a lot of that away. I dunno, Just my take.
Wow! Impressive modelling skills. Also, very impressive oral presentation skills, not to overlook your equally skillful videography! 100% all around. Thanks!
I LOVE these photo recon spits, the blue colour is in my eye utterly gorgeous and suits the Spit oddly well. Lovely build, I'm still learning the ropes in many respects on cheap 1:72 kits to cut me teeth on. My hope is to get the Airfix Gloster Javelin kit, an aircraft I have a real soft spot for as I always felt history judged it far too harshly. That, and it looks stunning with that thick delta wing :).
Very cool build, really like this - Personal note: The last operational Spit's in the UK were flying from RAF Woodvale on weather recce missions over Liverpool Bay. Before moving out to NZ, I lived just 2kms from Woodvale, I also learned to fly there. Best from NZ.
Excellent video, with technical points and history thrown in.Nice build too!The Griffon Spitfires are by far my favourite versions, from the MkXIV onwards.Have a few models, although ready built though myself.Great job❤👍!
Stumbled onto your channel and now subbed you. This is One of the best build videos I’ve seen, really appreciate all the background info you include and explanations of techniques.
Beautiful, love the PR Spifires. This Airfix kit looks right in the shapes. The only thing I don't like about Airfix kits is the engraved panel lines thicker than other manufacturers. Airfix should have the resources to improve that aspect.
They do have the resources but I don’t think they have the drive to fix it. If people are still buying their kits as is, there’s no incentive either. Tamiya had beautiful 1/48 panel lines on the 1993 Mustang…but Airfix still has troughs.
Regarding bleeding........many moons ago a fellow modeler buddy suggested running a quick swipe of Testor's Metalizer Sealer around the tape edge to create a seal.
An utterly lovely build. I tend to be less interest in the modelling main stream types, but that was a beautifully done PR Spit. Great vid and discussion.
Absolutely fantastic model. Your scratch building is amazing and your painting and weathering is second to none. I picked up some great tips. Thank you for sharing and I have subscribed.
Lol. It's not a competition. His FW 190 build from a few years ago inspired me to get back into model building. His channel is full of great builds and solid ideas.
I am legit wanting to get back to modelling and been watching a ton of yours and others videos... cant wait!! :D love the Spitfire Mk XIX, its my favourite version
I like airfix kits...i know they are not perfect some more so than others...but a lot of model builders consider a kit useless unless it has all the bangs and whistles. Model building was in my youth and still is taking a kit and improving it or scratch building it completely. The fun is making it work. Im afraid most molders want it "handed" to them without much effort.
Dunno why I haven't found you sooner. Amazing builds and skills. I'm working on a Replica PR Spitty of the one that currently resides at the USAF Museum in USAAF colors.
Fly fishing and fly tying shops are a good place to find fine wire as well, I got a bunch on spools for fairly cheap. They also are something other than lead, should you be health conscious. 😎
It's their new lacquer line up. They also now offer light and dark ghost Gray's and better out if the bottle matches to specific colours. Where as before you'd have to mix quite a bit to get the colour match you wanted
Very Cool! I just bumped into this channel and like the way you explain what you're doing to the model while building it,,, I find that extremely helpful! Just one thing,,, the ill fitting fuel tank covers you mention on the mk1 and mkV kits are supposed to be slightly proud of the main aircraft surface... They weren't flush. Just a tip incase you build anymore Spits on the channel! Keep up the good work 👍
I don’t know if you have tried spraying a light clear coat on top of your paint templates to prevent paint creep? It works for me, I hope it helps you. Thank you for the tip on using the Cricket.
Hats off to you, very informative build, thank you. I've just bought a Cricut EA2 with the idea of making my own paint stencils. What are you using for the stencil, Tamiya tape?
Awesome video. Do you find the Alclad flat clear to be better then Vallejo Matt varnish? It doesn't look like the Alclad gets very frosty looking which is nice.
Love the channel !! How would you rate an Airfix kit for an intermediate level modeler? I’m sure they’re not Tamiya level, but they seem to cover some great subjects.
I'd say avoid them. There is a lot of clean up required and you'll find yourself asking why they made the engineering choices they did. If you are really passionate about an airframe, then there is an end goal to work towards. If you are just building a kit to build something, it is hard with some of their kits to stay motivated. This kit isn't too bad but the landing gear leaves a bit of head scratching and elevators need work to square up.
I really don't understand why so many modelers complain about using decals - I've always gotten excellent results and actually look forward to the decal stage. Using quality decals and applying them properly is key which I see a lot of modelers not doing. If done right you shouldn't be able to tell they are decals.
To help get rid of the Wing-root Seam, try gluing the Upper Wings to the Fuselage first and then once the Fuselage halfs are together, glue the lower Wing. See if that will help get rid of that Wing-root Seam.
We have a facebook group dedicated to making masks with cutters if you're interested. facebook.com/groups/TheCuttingEdgeModelersGroup/ Be sure to answer the questions when applying!
Another great build.....awesome techniques and very informative commentary.....thoroughly enjoyable to watch. You mentioned a program (Cricket???) you used to construct the roundels...what is it and where can I find it?? Thanks.
I'm still trying to dial in my ratio for AK Real Colours. With the white I may be too heavy still, but I do enjoy their take on colours. I have to question their accuracy a bit though as I purchased their CF-188 top medium Gray and it's not even close to the bugs in real life
Airbrushing is always going to give you a better finish than brush painting. It atomizes the paint and coats evenly. Something brush painting had to take a lot more effort to not really come close.
I was given an Airfix \72 Spitfire recently, the panel lines were so big i was tempted to fill them with 0.5 evergreen styrene rod and turn them into 'weldseam's'.
I do! We've been together eight years. She's a very crafty/artsy person herself so it's easier to get away with this hobby...once the kids are in bed :)
Wow, that's a great idea, not just weathering, but aging the panels that were replaced!
👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍
I accidentally just discovered your channel. Love that you combine some history of the subject that you’re building, instead of watching some guy just building a model with bad background music that puts me to sleep.
Ron Rico I agree
Me too. Not only are they not informative, they are both boring and irritating!
Because of this video, it made me want to get this model and finally did...it arrived a couple days ago and I'm looking forward to building it.
It’s definitely one of airfix’s better offerings.
Fast becoming one of the best modelling channels on UA-cam. I absolutely love the way you talk about your builds and mix in history with the video as well rather than just playing music over the top for the whole thing. Awesome job man and congrats on the 3rd place!

i am just about to do one of these, very helpful with the aircraft colour :)

Excellent video, your Spitfire is a work of art. I have this kit in my stash, looking forward to building it.
An outstanding job.a very enjoyable build video.

Another great build.
HA! Great name!
bob dyer thanks. Named in reference to when my dad would dip his finger into his martini and let Curtis (the cat) lick it off his finger.
That's a gorgeous XIX! You've made me want to revisit this kit.
Excellent work, your attention to details is stunning!
Beautiful, love the PR Spifires. This Airfix kit looks right in the shapes. The only thing I don't like about Airfix kits is the engraved panel lines thicker than other manufacturers. Airfix should have the resources to improve that aspect.

Very nice build, a small tip from me: curved excel blades work much better for cutting out PE parts.
Good to know, I'll have to check Amazon for them :)
Great build!
Regarding bleeding........many moons ago a fellow modeler buddy suggested running a quick swipe of Testor's Metalizer Sealer around the tape edge to create a seal.
very nice !!! one of the few models i saw that looks great in a one color camo ! great paintwork.
Superb work. Subscribed!
Congrats on the award. Well deserved.
Thank you! It was exciting being at my first show and it's great to see people enjoying your work.
Now to plan for next season's shows :)
Great video, and timely! I will be starting this one soon myself, so lots of good info.
Kit turned out great!

I just discovered your channel and I've to say you do amazing builds. I myself is building a Spitfire currently. Good job.
Love this build video mate, great commentary and a great end result.
Wow amazing build !!

Plasmo has some serious competition with this guy

Is that the six pack from Cabela's?
Lovely work.
I would be very interested if you could show how you cut your own masks using the Cricut machine and what materials you use.
It's in the works for right after my next video.
Fantastic
Outstanding job!
Quick question, you mentioned when painting the roundel Tamiya's new dark red? Is this a new addition to the xf range can't seem to find into on it.
It's their new lacquer line up. They also now offer light and dark ghost Gray's and better out if the bottle matches to specific colours. Where as before you'd have to mix quite a bit to get the colour match you wanted
@@TheModelGuy thanks man wasn't sure if was xf or not 👍🏻

Just awesome

I use their A4 sheets
Awesome video. Do you find the Alclad flat clear to be better then Vallejo Matt varnish? It doesn't look like the Alclad gets very frosty looking which is nice.
I used to have Alclad frost on me at 15 PSI, but I started shooting at higher PSIs and that seemed to work. They recommend 15-20 I believe.
Love the channel !! How would you rate an Airfix kit for an intermediate level modeler? I’m sure they’re not Tamiya level, but they seem to cover some great subjects.

Unless you are using Tamiya decals that are super thick and require a lot of work to get seated nicely.
Join the top wing halves to the fuselage and add the lower wing later, no filler.
I tried that on the Mk Vb and it left a nasty over lap at the outer wing tips. Panel lines didn't line up properly and turned into a mess
To help get rid of the Wing-root Seam, try gluing the Upper Wings to the Fuselage first and then once the Fuselage halfs are together, glue the lower Wing. See if that will help get rid of that Wing-root Seam.
I tried that with their Mk Vb but it caused a bigger issue because their was an overlap at the wing tips that needed to be sanded down quite a bit.

Thanks for a nice video. For those of us who don’t know, what’s a Cricket machine?
It's a machine designed for cutting vinyl and other thin materials. Google Cricut
The Model Guy thanks, I’ve found them on Amazon, something to save up for!
The trick is to get your wife to use it too, takes the sting out of the cost
wondeful!
What kind of cement/glue are you using? It seems different than what I used 25 years ago.
Usually Tamiya Extra Thin
Excellent. Only note is to either talk a little slower, or add pauses between comments. Again, keep it going. Very good content. Yea!
Us maritimers have trouble speaking slower, but thanks for commenting :)
Excellent marriage of instruction and history. Discovered your channel at random but am now a subscriber. What do you use for the gloss clear coat?
I use Tamiya X-22 with 60% Mr Color Leveling Thinner
Another great build.....awesome techniques and very informative commentary.....thoroughly enjoyable to watch. You mentioned a program (Cricket???) you used to construct the roundels...what is it and where can I find it?? Thanks.

@@TheModelGuy OK thanks
Love it! Quick question what camera do you use? Could do a video on your set ups, how you make videos. Thanks
Nothing special, I actually use my Huawei P10 phone camera.
I really liked your commentary. Done in post?
I do, yes. It makes it easier to reflect on the build
We can't find this Airfix PRXIX model anymore anywhere.
Maybe they are going to re-release it?
I can't think that there is any way you could have done a better job on the painting.
Regarding wire have you thought of picture hanging wire?
I've been using Uschi fine wire for 1/48 and it's almost too thin.
I am looking to get this kit, and I will use your techniques to make mine better, so that's a big thank you from the UK! 👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍😊
I was given an Airfix \72 Spitfire recently, the panel lines were so big i was tempted to fill them with 0.5 evergreen styrene rod and turn them into 'weldseam's'.
And do I need to sand it
Interesting! At 5:30 you mention .005mm styrene thats .0001968503937 inch (2 tenths of a thou) gimme a break!
Whats a "cricket machine"
I'm a click bait sucker for Spitfires... its downright Pavlovian🤗
Just got back from an air display where this aircraft closed the show.
I keep getting you mixed up with take off models because similar profile picture and similar subs
I do voice overs on mine :)
I recently found it very annoying and frustrating that Airfix have discontinued this beautiful mark of Spitfire! WHY?
Maybe it's going to be retooled since they've recently released a Griffin Spit
For wire try twist ties from a loaf of bread
Show the damn box, please!
I find Airfix Is good quality for the price
👍🇷🇺🍾🤘
Your wife's machine obviously does not know the importance of getting a kit right!
