  • Greetings everyone, join me for this full build video of Airfix's 1:48 scale Spitfire FR Mk. XIV! In this video I have fun with weathering and chipping and reminisce about the appearance of the Spitfire.
    Please excuse the random pauses in the voice over, was having a little technical issues, I tried to cover it with some music so it wasn't just empty space.
    Please let me know what you think in the comments below and if you enjoyed the video please consider subscribing and pressing the bell icon to be notified of upcoming videos.

    "XIV" is pronounced "fourteen".

    great looking spitfire there and agreed, the shape and size of this variant makes it menacing indeed compared to the earlier versions. 👍

    I enjoyed this build very much, thanks for posting it. I did have a question though. Wouldn't a piece of plasticard on both inside fuselage halves have forced the cowl to open and helped that fit?

    • @HammerheadModelMaking
      @HammerheadModelMaking  2 роки тому +1

      Thanks Ralph, I did try this, along with putting in a section of sprue to try and spread it, however, the cowl piece was surprisingly thick and resistant to bending and it ended up breaking any plastic I used to try and get it to seat correctly. In the end I felt that the filler would be the least painful way of dealing with the issue and not put physical stress on the model that could later fail and break. But, great idea and thank you for suggesting it!

    Comprehending a Zen Buddhist Koan might be easier than having any comprehensive knowledge of Spitfire marks and their at least three different wing loadouts.

    I think the fuel tank cover you applied putty to, on the real spitfire it sits slightly proud either side so wouldn't sit flush, if you look on the airfix 1/24 kit its molded on and you can see that it sits that way and not fitted flush with the rest of the panels, still, a fantastic build!!..

    • @HammerheadModelMaking
      @HammerheadModelMaking  5 місяців тому

      Good to know the panel should sit proud, the problem still remains, though, the panel is too narrow and would need significant build up to get it to sit proud. It would be nice if there were an aftermarket part out there to fix it.

    Hello Brett, love your videos, do you use extraction when using your airbrush, thanks Paul

    • @HammerheadModelMaking
      @HammerheadModelMaking  10 місяців тому

      Hi, thanks for watching. Yes, I have an extractor that sits above my work area and vents out to a window just behind my work area. I use mostly acrylic paints, but it still helps to keep my studio/office clean. I still wear a respirator when painting any lacquers though, even with the extractor.

    Hi Brett. Wow - looks amazing! Love the weathering effect from the masking fluid. Your videos and explanations are super helpful - and inspirational! I am looking at getting back into model building after 30 years of family, work and other commitments. Haven't built a model in 30 years! But am looking forward to starting again. May have lots of questions (be prepared) :-) If my first few kits turn out even half as good as yours I'll be thrilled! Thanks for sharing and inspiring! Looking forward to more.... New subscriber here and just getting back into the hobby. I have this kit and will build it sometime after I have practiced my skills on some lesser kits first. But I have one question - I’m interested to know how many hours this took you to complete?

    • @HammerheadModelMaking
      @HammerheadModelMaking  2 роки тому

      Glad to hear you are getting back into the hobby, it's always a good day when our hobby grows! I generally don't track how long it takes me to complete each project, unless I'm doing a commissioned piece, however, single engine fighters like this one generally take me about 20 hours to complete start to finish. That's usually spread out over about a 2 - 3 week period.
      Thanks for the sub and for watching!

    Another great build and video. I have to agree with your brother however... the earlier Spitfires had the looks. The curves of a lady, and to have had those wings 'clipped', just takes away the enduring elegance of this engineering thoroughbred and national hero. I sincerely hope you never grow tired of building and posting videos of your exceptional creations. Very enjoyable watch as always. Mark, Lincolnshire, UK.

    Why oh why did they make that fuel tank cover in front of the cockpit a separate part?? would be a five star kit if had just made it part of the fuselage moulding..

    • @HammerheadModelMaking

      The only reason I can think of is that there is some inscribed detail right on the top of that panel that would be difficult to restore if there was a large seam right down the middle.

    I found it quite easy to slightly bend the hood outwards. The "soft" airfix plastic really shines here. It is not too brittle for this approach and is much easier to get a really good fit side to side.

    • @HammerheadModelMaking

      I had tried putting a spacer in there to bend it outwards without luck, perhaps I was doing it wrong.
