    I was always told the rocket rods were closed because it damaged the track and the area was starting to crack.
    As for Splash, yes it's great, but somethings need to change, it's the right move, with new tech and new story I believe the ride will be great and another story to tell about the history of Disneyland.

      I just..........all I remember is..........the moment they changed Maelstrom to Frozen at Epcot (Florida, USA), my heart just sank..........
      I really fear that this time around........it's NOT going to be any different; HOWEVER, if they keep the pumpkins and watermelons, I.........I think it MIGHT have a pretty good chance at keeping a FEW pieces of the past in a form of homage if you will.........but like I said. I don't know.

  • @RetraCarteR
    @RetraCarteR Рік тому +9

    The story I've always heard about why the Skyway closed down is that the 1994 Northridge earthquake damaged the central support inside of the Matterhorn, and that there wasn't any way to repair it without taking the entire Matterhorn apart.

    • @TheWorldAccordingtoJim
      @TheWorldAccordingtoJim Рік тому

      It is absolutely interesting if you have concrete evidence. You are aware of how far the Northridge Earthquake was from Disneyland? Based on the depth and location of the Quake, is that actually possible? Northridge is more than 54 miles from the heart of Disneyland and more than an hour and 25 minutes in normal traffic. There are particulars and actual evidence why the ride closed.. But the conspiracy theories are always interesting.

    • @RetraCarteR
      @RetraCarteR Рік тому +1

      @@TheWorldAccordingtoJim Oh, I don't have any evidence at all. Like I said, that's just what I've heard. I don't even remember where I first read it; it was probably some fan site or forum post that was itself just spreading an unconfirmed rumor.
      That said, it's not COMPLETELY implausible. Despite what you may think, the quake WAS definitely strong enough to be felt in Anaheim; there are reputable news reports from back then saying that it caused one of the scoreboards at the Angels' Baseball Stadium to collapse onto a bunch of spectator seats (though thankfully, said seats weren't occupied at the time). Apparently, the quake could even be felt as far out as Phoenix and Las Vegas. Yeah, it was THAT powerful. Seriously.
      It's impossible to say for sure whether or not it did any damage at Disneyland, and apparently Disney explicitly claimed at the time that it DIDN'T, but a part of me can't help but wonder... After all, Wikipedia DOES list metal fatigue as the primary reason for the Skyway's closure, it WOULD have been difficult if not impossible to fix the support beam inside of the Matterhorn if anything happened to it, and one of the most destructive earthquakes in modern SoCal history DID occur nearby just a few months before it closed. Maybe the by-then 37-year-old supports were already nearing the end of their service life, and the quake was just the straw that broke the proverbial camel's back?
      I'm probably getting too caught up in this, but at the very least, it does bear SOME thinking about.

    I think they should have taken the Princess and the Frog over to the Pirates island. I am so bummed they are getting rid of Splash Mountain, which is one of my favorite rides. Most didn't even know what Song of the South was and if they did or found out about it, it opened up conversation about that given time period. Healthy conversation is amazing. On another note, I still think it would have been super amazing to put Princess and the Frog over on the island and had like a scavenger hunt of the fireflies for kids and maybe an exclusive dining experience that would have been special ticket based with character experience. It would have been amazing to have had a full band and you have the boat going around the island.

    Brickey, thank you for exploring all different view points on the closure of Splash Mountain and not focusing on one sole view point. I love it when creators don’t try to persuade their audience one way or another, and actually try to understand all sides. At the end of the day, we can’t always have a zipa-dee-doo-dah perfect world, and as long as we’re understanding of each other regardless on what end of the spectrum we’re at… I think we’re heading in the right direction. What unites us all is our continued love of Disneyland! Great video as always!👏🏻

    I love this video, Brickey! Disney has changed SO MUCH over the years and for so many different reasons. If it stayed the same it wouldn’t be a place people continue to flock to.
    What I love most about Splash Mountain isn’t going anywhere: the ride that makes you both laugh and scream will still be there. The ride that makes it so you connect with strangers or share stories with your friends isn’t going anywhere. Also what I love about the current theming is its whimsy and a Tiana retheme is full of that PLUS it has the additional opportunity for enchantment and magic that we see in Snow White’s new retheme.
    I dream of mist and fireflies and lighting packages all accompanied by the amazing princess and the frog soundtrack. I truly can’t wait to sing along to the music and have those songs stuck in my head instead of Zipadee.

    Brickey you always outdo yourself in each video and you did it again in this video by showing what I call true Disneyland with all the vintage video which I believe was what Disneyland was all about a relaxing and easy way to navigate your way through the park not like today where going to Disneyland is quite frustrating for so many people and I must say seeing the vintage footage of Disneyland actually gave me goosebumps and really got me all chocked up inside because in my heart ❤️ I wish Disneyland was still the way it was in the early days but at the same time I know that change is inevitable and I’m willing to except it but I always hope that any change made is for the better just like Splash Mountain I know why they are retheming it but I ask myself the attention was there for years with no complaints as far as I know and now all of a sudden the issue you talked about is the reason to change the ride well I hope the next ride will be as good if not better then Splash Mountain thanks so much you really captured what true Disneyland is all about now with that peace ☮️ love ❤️ and happiness to you Brickey and I’ll see you on the next awesome Hey Brickey video peace ☮️ out ✌️

    Splash has been my favorite ride since I was a kid. With that, the new ip theme is better. I never knew anything about the brer characters. Tiana is gorgeous and the songs are 1000 times better than zip. The tiana universe is far more deep rooted and the characters are way more fun (facilitar, odie, the gator , and of course tiana herself) this is a good thing aside from political motivation, while also being politically motivated. I am here for it. I hate that I rode the ride last over four years ago and will miss its previous theme. But will be so happy to look forward to riding the new theme . This is a win on all fronts.

    Hey Brikey! Great video. Ok, my opinions. Disney dropped the ball on replacing the People Mover for Rocket Rods. With Splash Mountain. It’s cool they want to acknowledge The Princess and The Frog. I think they are trying to erase history and the importance of what happened so it won’t happen again. Song of the South was a wonderful movie. The ride shows the characters from the movie. From what I’ve been told, Brair rabbit or brair Fox. The Brair part is southern for brother. I guess a southern slang. I think everyone is excited but I think it won’t be the hit Disney wants. Like I said, my opinion.

    Uhhhhh I have such mixed feelings about Splash Mountain. I'm in the nostalgia camp. It just sucks because on the surface you wouldn't even know the deeper story behind it. I think for the late 80's they did a really good job keeping it surface level. It's just a bunch of crazy animals, kind of like Looney Tunes, where the under dog gets the last laugh. That's literally it. And I do think they kind of made some rash decisions on the whole thing. But at the same time, I look at the times I've ridden it. Not a ton because I don't like being wet and cold. I'm a desert rat, so CA is cold to me. I understand the change, but the question I ask, is it necessary? My answer to that is I don't think so. 🤷‍♀ But I don't know! I'm a freaking white woman in America, so I could never speak for that side or even remotely know how it feels to them. But I am listening, and if that's how they feel, then who the hell am I to say "you're being ridiculous". On the other hand, I do love Tiana and her movie, and I am way stoked to see what they do with it. All new stuff, and it'll probably be really bad ass. That movie is beautiful, and it will translate great onto a ride. It's happening whether we like it or not, so it is, what it is. I'm sure it'll be fine, and we'll all move on with our lives.

    This was a really great narrative on the subject of change at the park. I also think it was pretty compelling to end with the Splash Mountain question, since the rest of your video was mostly about Disney having to close rides due to running costs or safety issues, showing that this is one of the first times Disney has really had to make a change based on a question of morality and inclusivity. Personally I think it's great that they are changing it up. Just because it's still popular in its current state doesn't make it ok. I feel like if you gamble and wait it out, the outcome could be way worse. Disney plays the long game and I feel like they can see past the initial change when people won't care anymore that the ride as been updated.

Snow White who started it all for example. i will Always have a love for Disney no matter and i get change has to be made i only hope more magic returns and they keep the people in mind as they do it, not the pocket book... I'm sad this video wasn't longer. You could easily make a small documentary going further into all the closed or remade attractions. I loved all the footage you found of these old rides.
    As for Splash Mountain... Disney is definitely doing the right thing by burying Song of the South. But they MUST make the new ride WAY BETTER. They can't cut corners like the Test Track remodel at epcot. They need to do right by both fans of Splash Mountain, but more importantly, fans of Princess and the Frog. I think Disney management knows this.

    • @kevinlee7678
      @kevinlee7678 Рік тому +1

      No, the WRONG thing!

    • @MCOlangotang
      @MCOlangotang Рік тому

      Disney is doing the wrong thing by burying Song of the South. The movie is absolute trash and problematic, but Splash takes from the cartoon segments, based on African and Indigenous folklore. Disney not owning up to their mistakes has basically held the Br'er characters hostage: the average person believes they come from a racist movie, when that is not the case. It makes it much harder for these groups to 'reclaim' their characters, and the damage is all Disney's fault.
      As for Splash? With upkeep, the ride is timeless, close to as perfection that a theme park experience can get. it's legendary and will always be. But going as far as removing "Zip-a-dee-doo-dah" that is rumored (all bullshit, no evidence) to come from a racist song? Well, that just makes me believe that the people running the show are hacks that agree with anything Twitter says.
      Disney management does not care: they didn't take it seriously when they gave it a shitty budget. I doubt more money is going to make the experience better. They care about the merchandise opportunities, everything else is a veil. Splash is a VERY high bar to clear, I give it a 10% chance TBA is on par with Splash, and virtually 0 to exceed it.

    I wish Disney would focus on "reimagining" the elephant in the room, Tomorrowland.
    The money invested in Galaxy Edge would have been better spent on Tomorrowland and an expansion to Critter Country / New Orleans Square with a Princess and the Frog would be a better solution to the context.
    Galaxy Edge would have been better suited in the Wonder Bowl Lot (aka Simba Lot) with more space to expand ... or a whole separate gate ... but I don't hold the check book.

I didn't realize that since opening day Tomorrowland has had so many different modes of transportation rides like, boats, gondolas, railroad train, cars, space ships, rockets, people mover, monorails, submarines, etc. l know they will never change the name to Transportal Land but if they did change the name they would never have worry about it being outdated technology because it would showcase transportation options of the past, present and future.

    The retheme for Splash Mountain is just that, a retheme. The reason is irrelevant. Frankly I had doubts about Tower of Terror's retheme into Mission: Breakout. ToT was great, M:B is also great. It's fundamentally the same ride, the same system, the same concept but with a different skin. I'm looking forward to the new Splash Mountain theme because it's not the same thing as shuttering a ride.

    Hey Brickey! great documentary on the subject matter. A couple of these like Splash Mountain and the Peoplemover could go on and on... Saddest part on Splash Mountain is that with careful modification to the entrance and wait lines, they missed a great opportunity to teach some real history and promote inclusion. The ride itself was on the animated stories that had more to do with West African slave's moral tales in the likes of Aesop's Fables, than to the inaccurate Antebellum South live action part of the movie.

    Hey, Brickey - another AWEsome video! Here are my takes on closures/replacements - in no particular order:
    1. Splash Mountain vs Tiana's Bayou Adventure - very good choice, Disney! When this ride opened, I already had 30 years of visits under my belt, so the ride isn't as iconic for me as it is for other guests. I'm delighted to know that Tiana will have her own ride and we will still have log flume thrill.
    2. Dumbo MOVED?? Why don't I remember this? 🤦‍♀
    3. Mission To Mars (formerly Rocket To The Moon) - I know, I know... it was dated. I think this is one that could be brought back with improved technology and a new theme. Am I the only one?🤣
    4. People Mover - I'm STILL upset that Disney canceled this ride. I could go on and on, but this was a "must do" for me every time I visited.
    5. Captain EO - what was Disney thinking?? And is this space, the Tomorrowland Theater, is still empty? What a waste😕
    6. Skyway - another one of my favorites, very relaxing and unbeatable views. Glad I got to experience it 🥰
    7. Adventure Through Inner Space (yes, I'm dating myself) - another "must-do" for me on every visit. Plus: air-conditioning! Star Tours was an excellent replacement and very innovative at the time. But the little kid in me still wants to be shrunk down to the size of a molecule🔬
    Love, love, love your videos - I've been binge watching since I discovered your channel. I appreciate your focus on the design of the parks and their attractions. Hope to run into you on my next visit🤩

    There is still at least one Keel Boat operational. It is used to tow the Mark Twain/Columbia.

    Tiana's Bayou Adventure may just become the way like the people mover - dead space.

    I got to ride the Rocket Rods 1 time. 1 of my sons got to ride of the front so he loved it. But I am one that loved the people mover. We could go on it and rest for a while and cool off. The Rocket Rods was sort of fun but nothing like the People Movers. There were rumors also that the structure that held up the People Movers were cracking from the speed of the Rocket Rods.

    I feel Disneyland should keep Splash Mountain, with Disney World having Tiana's Bayou. That way, both sides get what they want because neither ride is cancelled or replaced, you increase black representation by spotlighting two black centric movies (one of which won an Oscar and the other reintroduced audiences to traditional animation) and both parks have added value through exclusive version (like Phantom Manor in Paris or Mystic Manor in Hong Kong). That being said, thank you for being fair and unbiased in your coverage of Splash Mountain.

    A minor problem with the Tiana... It's in Louisiana. There are NO mountains in Louisiana. The splash mountain (per polling) was the most favorite attraction... had about 45 animatronics in it as I remember. The new one? a TINY percentage of Splash Mountain. Saying that Avery Island has turned into a Commune is ridiculous.

    Love your videos. I did miss the People Mover. we are excited to see new IP on Splash. Disney does new IP and that is a very different category than the others - Adventure tree - Incredicoaster - Goofy sky school. I think it’s good to keep changing IP to stay relevant for new families.

    Ironically, the Skyliner is more futuristic than the monorails as a public transport vehicle due to the latter being not only expensive but also impractical to be used, especially during emergency breakdowns.
