@@actsd2682 it really was. In retrospect, I remember watching it live, was excited for it, but I didn't truly grasp how good of a performance it was. It wasn't just good as a TV countdown show performance, it wasn't just a everyone clap because you have to performance, in stands a a beautiful performance by two literal masters of the craft that built the stage and paved the way for the channel that hosted that show.
Thank you for your service! My whole family and my ex-husband's family are all military veterans. Did you know that was what "Galveston" was all about? Jimmy Webb was walking along the beach in Galveston and wrote the son about a soldier from the Spanish American war who was missing his girlfriend and hoping to get back.
Glade to have you home! I was 11 yrs old in 69. Crazy times back then but music took me to a different place in my little world. My Dad went to Vietnam TDY 63, I remember he was gone and came home to Clark AFB. Thank you for your service.
For me, Wichita Lineman is at the top of the list. Honestly I had forgotten about "By the time...Phoenix" which brings tears to my eyes just thinking about it. Hard to watch Glen's illness take hold in those last few years ... he was brave to keep on performing as long as he did. Alzheimers is a tough, tough row to hoe.

Country still tells a story. I’m not a fan of today’s stuff (rock music was perfected back in 1974, yet they keep trying to revisit it) but it still tells a story.
Okay, I play and sing for seniors. Most of what I do, I love myself. But Galveston is one that is often requested. So I added it to my list. I sing a lot of classic country, because it’s loved by many, even younger crowds. But my wife always reminds me to change it up depending on the age of the crowd. I say the best I can do is 90’s country. I have no desire to do anything new. But I read comments from people all the time that helps me pick songs to do. I see millions of views on these classics. I tell my wife, but she doesn’t listen. Guess what, I’m leaving for an hour show in 15 minutes. And Galveston will be sung this afternoon.
i am a guitar freak, huge jerry garcia fan, fan of guitar solos, and i cant tell you How many times I come back and watch this solo. This may be my favorite guitar solo of all time.
I saw Jerry many times and I miss him every day. I love this video and I have been sitting here playing it over and over. Incredible and sad at the same time. Thank you Glen, we really need you right now.
Truly a great guitarist. Saw him in Galveston before he stopped playing. He opened with Galveston. Brought tears to my eyes.next day I saw Ashley and Shannon in a small bar and shared a drink with them
This song and a few other songs of Glen I will carry to my grave ,they motivated me stay alive and fight harder to survive 19 months in Vietnam from September 1968 through April 1970 wow the power of applicable meaningful songs
Thank you for your service Jim. I was born in September 1968 while my dad was in the Air Force. I became a Marine in 1990. I deeply respect and admire those of you who served in Vietnam. Thank you buddy.
Glen & Steve W. have more talent in their pinky fingers than the rest of the modern Nashville wannabes combined. What an incredible combo of talent to hit the stage... blown away.
The chord progressions in this song are literally unmatched. Jimmy Webb was a song writing genius and Glen Campbell could play anything given to him, despite being unable to read music. And seeing him and Steve Wariner here is a moment in time!
Graduated from Auburn in 1969. Only 31 days later- was drafted! IF you think this song did NOT mean anything to us- you are sadly mistaken !! Wonderful to hear- even today, at age 76 !!! Love you Glenn !! sackboy
You could say that about 2 of the greatest musicians ever to grace this planet, Glen and Roy Clark. Glen was well known to every band in the 60's as a great studio musician so many on the insiders in music knew he was in a class on his own.
@@imelvino yep, Glenn played on many different albums for people like Elvis to the Beach Boys. Another guy who could absolutely shred the guitar was Jerry Reed. These guys are my top 3.
I was a 13 yr old and bought this album and played it a lot on our big sound system. I had a dozen much older male cousins who were all drafted and when they came to our home when they were all on leave they asked my parents not to let me play the album because of this song, beautiful though it was. I was pissed right off but 50 years later I DO understand. They were all afraid of what they had to face. 2 Of the dozen died in VN but the rest came home haunted. My Dad who was a very nearly killed veteran of WWII, (front line overrun, Battle of the Bulge) held on to that album when ever my cousins came to stay for several years after they all came home. I thank Heaven he did that, since it would really have caused unintentional hurt to those good men. They did as their country asked even though it was wrong.
Still get a little choked up watching this and seeing how much Glen just loved to perform! I remember all of his big hits and watching his TV show as a kid. Never knew how good he was at the time. Then I asked a guitar player/teacher friend of mine who his favorite guitar player was, and thought he was kidding when he said “Glen Campbell”. Well, I learned something that day.
What an incredible showman Glen was. I remember watching "The Glen Campbell" show as a child. Glen had it all. Talent, confidence and charisma. I loved the look on Steve's face when he looks at Glenn during his solo. He looked like the happiest and most grateful guy in the world.
As Steve Wariner played that baritone guitar signature melody line, the look of joy on his face was palpable ... a one-time event that went by much too quickly, but even still, he was able to grasp the love of the moment and enjoy it to its fullest.
Brilliant live performance. When some young people flatly say "I hate country music" . . . all I can say is that if you hear this and can't appreciate it, I feel sorry for you.
The same guy who says "I hate country" actually HAS at least one he DOES like, then says "that's different", that is how it starts. An exception, then two exception, next thing you know he is at "well, I do like SOME country" music and by the end he is a full blown country fan. I've seen that happen too much--it happened to me.
@@jimquantic The guitar is to be appreciated, across all genres of music ... it is a chameleon instrument in the hands of great players with unique ideas ...
Fun story: I used to say hated country music when I was in high school and college. I saw the performance in this video live on TV when it aired in 2002-Glen's performance here made my jaw drop and I've been a country fan since.
I love this video so much. It's like he planted his flag and said, "Look what I can still do with this guitar. Stand back." He absolutely tore it up with a solo with style and originality. Wariner, an amazing guitarist in his own right, is just as impressed by how Glen just blew the doors off that place. It's hard to explain what he means to so many, especially native Arkansans like me.
Paul Hogue I grew up on the Oklahoma and Arkansas line, near Ft. Smith, and lucky me, my parents were huge Glen Campbell fans (we might even be distant cousins, many Campbell brides on my dad's side of the family, also from Arkansas). Okies give Arkies a hard time, lol, but Glen is certainly a son of which you can be proud. He's a national treasure, I'm thankful for all the gifts he gave us.
They never even introduced Steve Wariner as a relevant star in this moment, but I know much better. I could have cried at how good this felt. Can't believe how good this was.
Back in the 70 s.My Dad was in a band.He plays just like Chet Atkins. The band played Glen Campbell songs.I call my Dad my Glen Campbell. I wish I could relive those days.Glen was a amazing Star👍
I think Glenn Campbell was probably the most underrated musician we have seen in the 20th century. Country, blues, rock, he could do it all. Truthfully one fo the greatest musicians of the 20th century. thanks big man for showing everyone what was actually possible vocally and with a guitar in your hands. I didn’t appreciate you till I hit my 40s and then your genius was obvious
I saw him in Las Vegas and thought he was the greatest talent ever. 50 years later I still think that. He put a smile on the face of millions and left us way too soon.
Walking the beach in Galveston tonight, in memory of this kind and gentle man and remembering how much I loved this song! The guys on the ferry always blasted it from the speakers and everyone would get out of their cars and sing along. Rest in peace, Glen. Galveston will always love you!
I went to Galveston today. As I drove over the causeway and saw the pelicans and gulls soaring out over the bay, I couldn't keep from breaking into song. I missed a few lyrics and went pitchy a couple of times, but my heart filled with joy just remembering all the various recordings and performances left behind for us by this beautiful, amazingly talented man. I miss him almost as if I knew him. I would like to see the city commemorate the anniversary of his passing (August 8) by playing "Galveston" on the ferries and all over town. I'd drive down for that.
Glenn IS a Christian believer and with his Savior in Heaven ... He is indeed, resting in peace and I will seem him when the Lord comes and collects His children from the four corners of this earth.
As an Aussie down under, one ambition I had as a teen was to walk along Galveston Beach. I was determined to get there - because of the song. Thank God I was later able to do it. This song will live forever. I envy your walk along the beach. I certainly enjoyed mine.
@@bradman1100 - That's a great story! I'm so glad you got to come to Galveston! It's only 75 miles from my house in Port Arthur, so I grew up on those beaches as a teenager. I STILL love it, and the song always reminds me that I need to take a little drive and go eat at Gaido's!
Its not that the soldier is "afraid of dying" its that he doesn't want to die and make someone else that MISSES him cry, "until I dry the tears she's crying". Even facing death, he's thinking of others and wanting to comfort them. Its a tale of not just circumstance but the character of selflessness and the affliction concerning it.
I was nine and my favorite uncle was in Viet nam and I remember my mom, who always had the record player on, told us what this song was about. My uncle made it back and was one of the lucky ones. Bless all vets from all the wars and support them in every way you can.
From Studio Musician, to Beach Boy, to iconic Country Western Singer, this was a man for all seasons. One of the greatest in the history of any genre. Miss you Glen
Glen was one of many artists I grew up listening to in the 70's. I always found myself coming back to his music from time to time after wandering off for a while in lifes many directions. When I was 20 something, I had a chance to see Glen in concert locally, but didn't go. Still kind of kicking myself for that.
Without a doubt one of the best songs and singers there ever has been. In 1969 I was in VietNam, I live each day remembering that place and I often think of that song. What a place and what a time it was.
my cousin was a top pro pedal steel guy who knew and recorded with Glenn in Nashville. I asked him what Glenn was like. He said 'Just like you and me. That country boy TV stuff was for show. Glenn was a solid guy with remarkable talent'
Boy, Ain;t THAT the Truth! Mother watched Dad leave Galveston in military ship bound for German during the reconstruction era so this powerful song reminds me of how grateful & blessed our family is that he came home in one piece and brings tears to my eyes ever time I hear it.
@Bill gillet , ..... Ask Vince Gill what he thinks of Glen and you'll have your answer. Vince is AH- mazing, but he would be the first to take his hat off to Glen Campbell.
Every time i hear this wonderful man and his fabulous music I go back to my 20's. So lucky to have liived in tbe 60s/70s when music was something special
Many older artists can never recapture the energy and intensity of classics they recorded when young.....not so HERE !! I keep coming back to this performance....it is as good as the original performance on the original record and Glen Campbell magically conveys the emotion of this song as only he himself could.........a master at work with an added bonus of Steve Wariner to make this an unforgettable song in the hearts of true Americans. Happy trails and many thanks to the Wichita Lineman.....
THE MOST INSANE COMBINATION OF MUSICAL GIFTS THE HUMAN MIND COULD POSSIBLY ENVISION. OR GOD COULD CREATE!!! No Singer/Musician could do the things Glen Campbell was born to do. That wonderful, high pitched Falsetto voice. Perfectly in place with every note of music. Whether the song was Bullet fast or Maple Syrup slow, it was flawlessly performed. Not only that, many consider him the greatest Guitar Player that ever lived. Or any other instrument he tried. Until I saw his Classic Sioux Falls Concert on You Tube, I didn't realize he played Bagpipes. There he was, singing Amazing Grace and playing the Pipes like a Scottish Highlander!! A musical freak of nature, blessed by a higher force. In those two aspects, the Country Boy from Arkansas was unapproached. A once in a Century talent.

Wow. - your response tugs my heart strings - thank you for sharing. Though I was very young during the Vietnam War I was sadly touched very. personally by a casualty. My favorite first cousin who was more like a big brother to me and all of our cousins was killed by friendly fire by a young 18 year old soldier who had just arrived to his barracks - he was cleaning out his bayonet and it discharged and shot Ronnie killing him instantly he was on the lower bunk Ronnie was on the upper bunk from what I remember about the sad details but it was devastating to say the least to everyone particularly the young soldier who was just a kid and it was just an accident. Ronnie was a leader a paratrooper/Green Beret on his fourth tour of duty- his wife was 8 months pregnant with their first child. My father was Ronnie’s favorite uncle - much like a second father to him. Text chain letters almost weekly or as often as they could my dad actually got him a job at the consumer electronics company where he was a manager but he was treated so horribly that he went back as well as I guess or I’m sure wanting to do more for his country. My father received what was the last letter two days after we received the news by and knock on the door of our home that Ronnie was dead. The letter stated that he had just narrowly escaped several land mines - two of his but he didn’t make it he was devastated but he also was always positive about why he was there. I’ll never forget the knock on the door they came to our house because Ronnie and his young life stayed with us before he left because their house was not completed and we had plenty of room in ours so they had our address and his home address. It’s the first time I remember hearing my mother who is in her early 30s scream and cry Ronnie was her oldest brothers only son. Our entire family adored him. I was 6 years old. I cannot listen to this song without tears.
I am from Galveston and one of my classmates was killed in Vietnam. Because of that this song is especially poignant and sad yet so beautiful and timeless. I was in high school when this song came out. It really kind of put our little town on the map.
Yes it did. On my first business Trip to Houston I made sure to see The Galveston I had heard about for so many years in this classic song that combined superior writing , guitar playing and singing talent. Nice town . Greetings from NJ, where we are naturally big fans of our State Stars like Frank Sinatra and Bruce Springsteen but also of one of The Greats , Glen Campbell may he RIP.

Glen Campbell was born August 1936, so he was 65 or 66 when he performed Galveston with Wariner. That's some remarkable vocal range and control for someone of his age. Beautiful song, tugs at my heart. My brother was in Nam when the song was released.
My Daddy and I used to listen to Glen Cambell records and watch his variety show. Galveston has always been my favorite song of his. Sadly, my Daddy also had Alzheimers and passed away in 2004. As a Texan serving my 2nd Vietnam tour in 1969, it made me homesick.
Your words paint a powerful emotional image. God bless you and all the brave men alongside you...you truly are the best among us...thank you.
Thank you for your service. This song is so beautiful...
thanks for your service Sir.
Nothing is as American as country music. And who to sing it but the immortal and legendary Glen Campbell. RIP Glen, you are Americana!
Galveston, By the Time I Get to Phoenix, and Wichita Lineman are three of the greatest songs ever penned. Jimmy Webb is a lyrical genius.
Dan Nájera I agree completely, and Glen Campbell was the perfect singer for this and all those songs. I can’t remember anyone better
@@douglaswise5670 I had the pleasure of playing golf with Glen years and years ago and as Vincent Furnier, known as stage name Alice cooper once said, Glen in in the top 5 guitarist, and he would know
afc45 churchwell you played golf with Glen? How was that like? He seemed like a funny, personable fellow. I’ve become a huge fan of him and Jimmy Webb
Dan Nájera he loved telling jokes. He really could play golf had a great short game and also friendly and had a fondness for people. Great personality
If only modern country music was like this.
So Sad and So True
I don’t think there is anyone alive today with half that much talent.
My son liked GC music before I did...was 1974
At the end of the video, Steve Warner gives Glen a friendly smack. He knew how special that performance was.
i am a guitar freak, huge jerry garcia fan, fan of guitar solos, and i cant tell you How many times I come back and watch this solo. This may be my favorite guitar solo of all time.
I’m exactly the same way, I know every single note in that solo and I still can’t listen to it enough. It’s perfect
Glen's regarded by many as the cleanest picker of all time.
imagine if his guitar was in tune
I saw Jerry many times and I miss him every day. I love this video and I have been sitting here playing it over and over. Incredible and sad at the same time. Thank you Glen, we really need you right now.
Anyone think Glen was seriously underrated as a guitarist? I mean, holy shit he is good.

This song and a few other songs of Glen I will carry to my grave ,they motivated me stay alive and fight harder to survive 19 months in Vietnam from September 1968 through April 1970 wow the power of applicable meaningful songs

Jim,
Thanks so much for your service. Your comment made me think of my dad, who also fought in Vietnam. For that, I am very grateful.
As a former U.S. Army 11B ..All I can say is thank you Glen Campbell.
Graduated from Auburn in 1969. Only 31 days later- was drafted! IF you think this song did NOT mean anything to us- you are sadly mistaken !! Wonderful to hear- even today, at age 76 !!! Love you Glenn !! sackboy

Superb performance from Glen with Steve Wariner as his wing man..... it just doesn't get better than this..... Sublime..!
I think Steve got a Master Class from Glen, what a superb performance!
I have been listening to Glen's talent since 63 and I miss such great performers like him. Today's so called talent is a joke.
"Too much talent in one body..." Spot-on assessment that.
Maybe that's how things are supposed to be!
Merle H., always used the minimum number of words to say the exact right thing!
And coming from Merle Haggard himself!
Just amazing Glen kept that golden voice until the dementia stole that too.
My Dad introduced me to his music, he passed away 11 years ago, but still there in my soul, what a performer, thanks Dad ❤️
Glen was the best. Be glad he introduced you to his music, singing, acting, and about the best guitar picker I ever heard
You're dad loved you more than u can imagine. Xo. We love u junie
So much talent in just six and a half minutes! There will never be another Glen Campbell!!!
That double leg kick to finish the solo was so boss. Love Glen Campbell.
jarjon76 Hell damn yeah!
Amen!
You can say that again! Loved it!❤👍
I know that was just uber cool 👍💯
As Steve Wariner played that baritone guitar signature melody line, the look of joy on his face was palpable ... a one-time event that went by much too quickly, but even still, he was able to grasp the love of the moment and enjoy it to its fullest.
This song and "Witchita Lineman" are so haunting they will stay with you forever.
Id add By the time I get to Phoenix as the Jim Webb triple hit.
Oh yes! That one too. So expressive.

@@lancelot6011 Yes, that one too. So many great songs.
How can anyone dislike this? This performance is simply OUTSTANDING!!!
EXACTLY!
New pop country radio on the radio is trash tho
Glen Campbell is "other worldly" on the guitar. He is who the worlds greatest guitarist dreams of being.
I've seen so many videos where Glen is with other guitar players, and they all have that same reaction. They just smile and shake their heads.
Paul Hogue well said. He raised the roof. A one off, untouchable. Fair one to Steve he stood back and admired like we do. Class.
paaa.... you nailed it. Glenn was one of a kind.
wow, two of the greatest guitarists, period. Everyone knows about Glen, but Wariner is one of the most underrated all around artists ever.

Jimmy Webb should get credit too. He did write it.
Should be No. 1 as the greatest country song ever, and certainly one of the greatest songs period

When I feel a little down I listen to this live version. Like Merle said, so MUCH talent. What a performer!!

I love this fully-Orchestrated version.
...absolutely Beautiful!
Dang he could play the guitar what a genius I miss ya Glenn you were one of the greats you wrote my favorite country songs n could play like no one els. You are missed by so many and brought a lot of joy n sadness with your songs. Rest in peace Glenn and I'm sure your playing music with the angels
Watching this today, everyone is so young. I still repeat this song every time this song comes on. Even better Steve Warner is back in him up. Dream come true, Glenn still appears to have his memory here, so great to see!
Speaking as a native Houstonian (3rd generation) who spent summers in Galveston, all I can say is that Glen Campbell is THE MAN!!
