My mother knitted (or sewed) all of my outfits when I was growing up during WW2. She taught me always to slip the first stitch of a row and to knit the last, irrespective of the pattern. This gave edges that could easily be joined together, giving a nice flat seam.
I love how you hold your yarn! I'm a self taught continental knitter and I sort of throw my purl stitches. I'm going to try your way. (P.S. A fellow NYer, Dutchess County)
This will be the perfect bind off for a cowl I'm making that can be pulled up over your head like a hood. I was afraid the regular technique for this bind off would flare too much, as has happened to me in the past. Thanks for sharing! I'm def a subscriber now.
Great tip! I don't use this because of the bagginess in my sock ribbing....I love the variation you came up with....always genius ideas from you. Thanks!
I really like your voice and your explanations, so I subscribed! I think I will try your modification of Jeny's bind off. Stretchy, but not too stretchy so it looks neat and will create a good edge for the bind off on the bottom of my sweater. Thanks.
I just finished a sweater where I needed to use Jeny’s super stretch bind off on the sleeve cuffs. (The yarn I used is Letti Lopi which doesn’t have any stretch.) The problem was that the sleeve cuffs have cables, so I didn’t want the bulk of that bind off method on those knit cable stitches. Here you are to the rescue! Great video! Subscribed and sending you so much gratitude 🙏🏼💖
This is awesome, thank you! I've been searching for the perfect bind off for a top down sweater, and tubular 2×2 in the round is just warping my brain. I'm also concerned about having enough give for my hips. This seems like a great compromise!
This is exciting. Thank you. I have extend the rib on last year's baby hat, to get more wear out of it, but I've done the cast off twice and it's still quite tight. I am going to have another go using this stretchy cast off.
@@LauraNelkin I did it today. It was difficult at first, until I got the hang of it, then it was easy. The cast off is nice and stretchy, and best of all, it fits the baby, so we can get another winter out of the hat. Thanks so much for sharing this technique.
I did a bind off of my first Laxo sock using a regular bind off. I was sure I could do a loose bind off. Well, it did fit, but barely. I decided to undo the front half of the sock’s bind off and redo it, since I had thankfully left a pretty good tale. I then did the modified version of this bind off on that front half of the sock. And…it was perfect! I learned a lesson there.
Thanks for this! a less super stretchy bind off will be my next favorite sock bind off - I've not been totally pleased with the flaring results of the super stretchy version.
Thank you Laura. It never occurred to me to modify it. I'm binding off some fingerless mitts and the JSSBO just flared too much I'm going to undo it now and use your mod.
With Hoodola (which guided me here!), what does the other side look like? Are the knit stitches tidy on the other side also? I'm thinking of when the cowl part is flipped inside of the hood and the BO will be visible when worn like a balaclava.
Okay I’m gonna be the first to say that I’m a tubular bind off convert. Totally thought it was a faff. Now I hate everything else for sleeves or cuffs. I do recognize it’s not right for everything but now I make the time for it! I love how stretch this bind off is!!
Thanks for the great mod Laura, I do find jssbo just a bit too flared so I’m excited to try this. What is the reason for slipping the two stitches individually instead of together?
Very helpful! I like the tidiness of your modification. Thank you!

Ah, that is a technique that is great in certain situations, but not all, as it tightens up the edge quite a bit.

Perfect!
I only yarn over every other stitch, and that seems to work well for me.
Oh excellent mod... what i like about this method is the tidyness at the top of the knit columns : )!
Love the modification! Thanks for sharing your expertise.
Love the modified bind off. It gives a much neater edge to the bottom of my top-down sweater and cuffs. Thank you.
Laura Nelkin is an amazing knitter and an incredible teacher. I've been privileged to attend some of her classes!
Thank you! I've always thought this was *too* stretchy so this modification is excellent.
Genius! I have no other words for your modification. ♥️🙏👏👏👏
oh my gosh this is going to help with socks for me so much. So glad I found your hoodola video, which led me here lol
Just finished a neck warmer using #5 bulky yarn for charity & used yur 2nd method (less stretchy) & worked perfect.Thank u! Thank u! ☺️ 👍
Great tip! I don't use this because of the bagginess in my sock ribbing....I love the variation you came up with....always genius ideas from you. Thanks!
I find the "somewhat stretchy" method is working best for me on this project so I am very pleased!!
Great to hear!

Welcome aboard!
Yes! I learned this years ago and just skipped the YO but forgot exactly what I did. Going to mimic yours today. Thanks, Laura!
You're so welcome! Go MB!

I'm SO glad it was helpful!!!
Really good! Love your nerdiness, it makes knitting better for us as well!
Yay, thank you!

Such a good demo. I’ve always skipped the first part because it flares out, and I was doing my purls wrong. Next time I’ll do it this way.
Oh, glad to help!
Wonderful tutorial!! Thank you!
You are so welcome!
Thank you so much for this video, it was a huge help for me ❤
Great modification! Just love watching and learning from you, Laura! Thank you!
So glad you like it!!! I love learning with you all too!
Thanks, Laura! This is exactly what I needed for my sweater!
Your hands are beautiful! And your knitting too😁. Thank you. I love your modification and plan to use it on a sweater now💗

Thank you, I love the idea of only stretching the purl! 😊
Thanks for this! a less super stretchy bind off will be my next favorite sock bind off - I've not been totally pleased with the flaring results of the super stretchy version.

I love this great modification on the bind off
Thank you! Love the easy to see details and your ideas for modifications! Beautiful!!
Good modification, thank you!
You are welcome!
This looks great! Do you bind off with the same size needle you used in the ribbing?
Yes, I do!
C'est mon rabattage préféré seulement sur les mailles envers merci pour l'astuce ! 🙏
Awesome.Thank you teacher.😊
I love this, thank you! - And also - will you please tell us what your fabulous shawl is?
Oh! That is Platy Shawl! www.nelkindesigns.com/platy
Really nice bind off - thanks for that!
That is your modified one!
My pleasure!
Thank you Laura. It never occurred to me to modify it. I'm binding off some fingerless mitts and the JSSBO just flared too much I'm going to undo it now and use your mod.
Glad it was helpful! Good timing!!!

I think so! But swatch and see if you like it!
Perfection!
Aw, thanks!!!
This is great!
1000 thumbs up for the mod!❤❤❤❤
Aw, thanks!
Love this, thank you Laura!
You're so welcome!

Great idea!! Thanks.
Glad you liked it!
That's a good solution to the flaring of the original JSSBO.
Thanks!
will this work for knit one and purl on for the bind-off on socks
Definitely!!!! It is my go-to!
Thanks, Laura! I just used this for a sleeve bind off. Will plan to use it for my Laxo socks too.
Perfect!
What if you've got a knit 3, purl 1 ribbing, and you (me) are a really tight knitter ( especially at the bind off)?
I am updating a pair of ankle socks that my sister in law made. HER knitting is perfect!
What did you end up doing? 😊
Thanks for the great mod Laura, I do find jssbo just a bit too flared so I’m excited to try this. What is the reason for slipping the two stitches individually instead of together?
I find it to lay more smoothly! Try it both ways and tell me what you think!
I found the same thing , too stretchy, I also quickly changed to just doing them on the purls , which sit back nicely because of the YOs
awesome!
It looks way neater when you first bring the third stitch over the middle one, then over the first one.
You method makes it a bit clotty
I'll have to try it that way!
Great modification as at times JSSBO is a bit looser than I wish it to be. Gotta give this a try next toe up sock pattern!
So glad you love it!
my jacket's ribbing loves you
