He is an interesting and very talented artist. I look forward to this part of your journey with this particular rabbit hole.

"Emotional manipulation" is the crux of Bo's brand. He gets crazy and outlandish, but always brings it back home so you have something to think about.
Bo Burnham & Tim Minchin are both marvelously talented musicians who use that and humor to make some really good points. Sometimes it's just silly fun, and other times it gets way deeper than you'd expect.
I'm adding Bill Bailey to that list, maybe he focusses more on the entertainment side of things, but he too is very talented, funny, and does make you think about things from time to time.
Indeed can't wait for Tim Minchin on this channel
Yes Tim Minchin is also an wonderful musician and an thought provoking comic. Highly recommend.
She should do prejudice or cont
I am so glad people know Tim! Musical comedy can be a crutch but Bo and Tim are the epitome of doing it right.
No long intro, no links to social media at the start, no shoutouts, no explanation, just straight to the reaction. I LOVE IT.
“How the World Works” is another amazing segment of this special!
I’m so glad you’re in the Bo now!
Welcome to the world of Bo. For me personally, it's the most entertaining rabbit hole to watch people go down.
I've been a fan of him since ~2007. We're both from Boston, roughly the same age, met him a couple times in public when I moved out to LA. Watching him get his first special on Comedy Central, making his move to Netflix, witnessing this comeback, and seeing him improve his craft, work on his health both physically and mentally, relating to his struggle throughout the pandemic, it's been one hell of a ride.
I have nothing but admiration for this guy.
I grew up listening to Bo, always happy when someone discovers him. "How the World Works" is also a great one from this Netflix special.
Yeah she absolutely should react to How the World Works
Bo has repeatedly stated that George Carlin is his biggest inspiration. I think it's a natural progression to see his stuff after seeing a good bit of Carlin material. Definitely check out his special called "what". Probably his most well-known routine
We think we know you
I prefer Make Happy personally but What isn't terrible either.
I would have thought it's Tom Lehrer.
@@Lightkie Tom Lehrer is amazing, not enough people talk about him at all.
Wasn't he also inspired by Hans Teeuwen, the Dutch absurdist that did some shows in the UK (in English of course)? Not his best work and Teeuwen is a bit strange, intimidating and absurd by Dutch standards too, but the combination of stand up with songs is the Dutch comedy tradition, comedy shows without songs have been the exception for ages.
Bo is a great performer and really mixes songs, comedy, and having a message really well. Hope you react to more of his stuff!
First time Bo? Wow, lucky you!
If you end up going on a journey through his catalogue, I would highly recommend starting at the beginning and moving chronologically so that you can see the evolution.
This is one of his most recent works, very well done, but it's also very different from where he started.
Either way, great video - stoked to see more!
That could be a good idea, do you know which would was the first?
@@NoProtocol He started on UA-cam as a kid, just search Bo Burnham and then transitioned into mainstream fame with several Specials:
Bo Burnham (2009)
Words, Words, Words (2010)
what. (2013)
Inside (The Songs) (2021)
@@NoProtocol
Bo also had another special named “Make Happy” - 2016
Bo also directed a movie called “8th Grade” in 2018.
The last bit of his Make Happy special is called “Kanye Rant” and it’s a masterpiece.
@@abducteeofearth1703 I concure about "kanye rant"
Very much yes. Bo is an incredible talent, and the way he structures material to hit so many different layers at the same time (both to make you laugh and to really, really make you think about things in a much more serious way) is amazing.
Going through Bo Burnham's material is a wild, crazy ride that I'm sure NoProtocol would really enjoy and appreciate.
Watch his early work in chronological order and you’ll understand his journey much better. My fav line in this song is “your time is now, your inside’s out…” so clever with multiple meanings
His entire inside special is just mind-blowingly good, I mean all around he's great but that special in particular cemented him as one of the greats of intelligent comedy for me. I'd really recommend watching it from beginning to end.
I remember thinking how good it was when it came out, weird that I never re watched it. Instead I just started watching other people watch it, and they never do it in order.
Bo has made me cry as much as he has made me laugh, which is a lot. His journey, story, and values are so relatable and poignant. I highly recommend checking out his Kanye Rant and All Eyes on Me for a beautiful little window into his soul.
ive seen so many reactions on this song and what Bo Burnham is really saying goes completely over the head of most of them. I really appreciate that you really listened to the lyrics and thought about it. im definetly gonna check out more of your videos
Bo Burnham is a rabbit hole 100% worth going down-he’s hilarious but he’s also very thought provoking
I was hoping to get your take on this song. I love it because it's so chaotic and then becomes structured and calming. Many great things to take in, putting the world in the hands of the younger generation was one of the main talking points when it came to internet development. Apathy's a tragedy, and boredom is a crime is another great line. As a more comedic introduction I would recommend "I'm Bo Yo" or "word words words". Much love!
“30” and “That Funny Feeling” are great ones from Inside.
Bo is incredibly talented and cognitively gifted. He's also a tragic character. When you see his Kanye bit it'll break your heart. He had a nervous breakdown towards the end of the song and if you didn't know you'd think it was part of the act. He's so talented and rehearsed that he can be a one man band while keeping it together during mental health issues. Bo's better now, but his relationship to his audience is a tight rope act that can't be maintained into a healthy retirement age.
You're not incorrect by any means but well.. may I suggest fully describing the compelling part of the video might be a poor idea if you wish for her to do a reaction to that performance? Just maybe? To be fair, unless you research it or have heard the story before it's by no means guaranteed that you realize it, but still. Failing that the other song from Inside clears it up quite well.
@@Zabiru- I didn't say when it was. No one catches it and then the context of the song is lost. I tried to be as factual as possible without spilling the beans. I might delete my original, but I suspect the reaction ends with "cool song. He's funny." vibes.
@Zabiru That song is far more impactful with context. I guess you could argue that it’s best to watch it once blind, get context, then watch it again, but if I was just planning on watching it once, I’d much rather have the background info this guy dropped.
Someone mentioned "That funny feeling" and I second that. This song is... different, in a sense. People often have problem with getting their head around it, so it would be fun to watch you react to it and see how far your interpretation would differ from my own.
Also, if you'll fall into Bo rabbit hole, you'd probably see how his work evolved. He started making videos on youtube in 2006, being sixteen years old and was really funny, but his beginnings were really edgy. I prefer newer Bo, where he's got "layers", like in here
Bo really is a genius. As you pointed out, he knows how to provoke emotion through sounds or silences or certain words/phrases. A very talented musician and comedian. This entire special he made during quarantine is absolutely amazing. His older work is great too. He was dearly missed during his mental health hiatus.
You mean drug addiction.
@@CraftySasquatch Actually no I didn't but I'll look into it. Thanks
"How The World Works" and "Repeat Stuff" are two of my favorites.
Inside is probably his peak; almost performance art as much as musical comedy. The whole special is well worth watching.
the slowed up bit at the end "Can I interest you in a little bit of everything all of the time" sounds like a total Villain soundtrack
So "Inside" is a special he filmed during the pandemic, it's done entirely inside a room in his house and explores isolation and the internet's influence on life. Easy to recommend.
I didn’t connect that he’s in his room! Thanks for this
I love how fast u go into the video. Its so satisfying
It is always amazing getting to hear someone's immediate thoughts they take away from his work. Also, you were fine leaving it as 'consume the internet' because that is what it honestly is too. Directly in the lyrics, he says it was designed to make you do that. The internet and all it has to offer has become an entity and being all on its own that wants people to eat it all up. And if you are not careful or are able to moderate yourself, an action that is very difficult for anyone, you will be 'consuming' all it offers you.
I REALLY like your intros. On other channels, I usually have to skip through about 2-5 minutes of mindless rambling first.
I remember all those "welcome to the internet I will be your guide" memes from so many years ago one of the biggest ones was the guy wearing just shorts and no shirt wearing a horse head mask and laying on a bed covered in Cadbury eggs also the guy wearing the masterchief helmet with a portal gun and lightsaber or the cat photoshopped onto a unicorns back
Bo's social commentaries are always so on-point. He uses art via comedy and music as a medium to address the destructive and nonsensical nature of our society and our norms, and what kind of messages they convey to the average person. I strongly recommend watching the entire special "Inside," even if you don't give us a reaction, because it is sincerely thought-provoking and existential.
I watch a lot of Bo Burnham reactions, and I really liked yours. You dwelled on some lyrics that very few people comment about in the almost two years this particular song was out. So I still learn something from you. Thanks!
I love how focused you are on the video you are watching. Makes me mesmerized!
Hearing you say the word maniacal reminded me of this. In 1968 John Lennon did an interview where he said he believed that society is being run by maniacs for maniacal reasons and that he might actually be put away for having that view, pointing it out to others… 55 years ago..
You have just entered a rabbit hole that you will never forget. Congrats.
I remember you asking, very early on, to recommend someone like Carlin. I think he might be the closest to Carlin that exists currently. He's different than him for sure, and also doesn't have anywhere near the number of amazing specials, but Burnham's specials get progressively better every time, culminating in the special that this video is from. It's definitely worth watching.
Great reaction very insightful and I have to say how much I love that forever 27 poster behind you
You nailed it one of your comments. That too many options makes it too difficult to choose. Spot on. Too much variety is stressful IMO 👌
When he says "boredom is a crime" I imagine he is meaning that people are literally obsessed with the notion of having constant stimulus to the brain, we can't just sit and you know.. sit. No one allows themselves to be bored any more.
Everything about this bit was incredible; from the lyrics sung, the topic of choice and even to how meta the method in which we viewed his video.
bo burnham's "that funny feeling" is one of my favorites and i think itll be right up your alley!! would love to see your reaction to it :)
if you like musical comedians you might like Tim Minchin, id highly recommend his song Prejudice... but song for wossy is also great.
I’m not normally a guy who comments on anything online but I’m excited for you to get a look at Bo. I started watching him at his special What and now have seen all his work.
I would suggest going back and watching something from Make Happy before you proceed with more stuff from Inside just to get a feel for him. After Make Happy and him having panic attacks on stage he stopped performing for a number of years to get better. Then Inside happened.
Other people have already said it but some of his early stuff is problematic. He gets better as time goes. Excited to see more.
If I were to recommend two as a bit of a complete story. Kanye rant/all eyes on me in that order. It shows him both directly before and after a 5 year hiatus from performance while he dealt with his anxiety and depression.
They’re both sad, funny and powerful, but his personal growth in that time is incredible just as a level of confidence you can feel.
"Inside" was an experience. I watched it right when it came out in the middle of the pandemic. Recommended.
In the 90s we had local networks entangling entire houses. And some of them had the Internet. Time for cartoons, re-voices of the Matrix with cool music.
Now. The Internet is the only thing in my country that hasn’t been turned off. The government has already seized the radio (the last truthful radio station was closed a year ago), television is in their pocket. They are trying to shut down the Internet, but they don’t know how to do it without killing the banking system. Gone are the days when you needed a VPN to watch anime and blocked movies. It is for viewing military maps and viewing alternative opinions.
Every night you sit by the window
Moving the stars
Every night you can't sleep
It's all so serious
I remember, I know
The wind is in your hands
An artificial paradise
You're delirious in your dreams
Press the button and you will get the result
And your dream will come true!
Press the button, but why aren't you happy?
There's nothing left for you to strive for
(group Technology, similar in sound to Depish Mod, song 1991, there is a rhyme, in Russian)
His entire inside special is just mindbogglingly good
I wasn't into Bo that much (just not my style), but I finally watched his Inside special during lockdown and it really impressed me. It's clever from beginning to end. I'm a Bo convert.
I just recently found your channel but love it. You have such a way of just talking when you express yourself that is fun as an English-second-language-person. Just so eloquent. Weirdest compliment ever but awesome reaction.
Edit: Please react to more Bo. "The Chicken" is a beautiful one that I think you'd like.
Welcome to the Internet
Her smile is brighter than my future
"...and it did all the things we designed it to do" gives me chills every time. There are many fine and useful things we can gain from the internet, but as someone born in the analog age I don't think it's really bringing us a better world at all.
OK... I've been binge-watching reactions to Ren - Hi Ren, and would occasionally check if you did one. Because, I love your attention to detail, and your analytic approach to reacting to videos. So... I'm kind of hoping one of your next reactions would be that. A real emotional, mental and intellectual rollercoaster.
Love your stuff, btw!
His most recent stuff is among his best, but the one song I find most fascinating is Can’t Handle This. It’s from a performance of his in New York, just before he took a five year break from performing.
That put the world in your hands part… dang
His Inside Comedic documentary is amazing.
I am so glad u r going down the Bo rabbit hole. He is so good
I highly recommend watching the whole special. It hits different than watching bits of it in isolation.
Bo has a cool idea in most of his songs where he usually starts by mocking someone or something playing into your assumptions, then sucker punches you in the second half with something that makes you second guess your worldview.
very few songs that aren't at least a little thought provoking
Literally this song is the embodiment of the internet haha great reaction 😁
Incredible reaction, Bo Burnham is definitely one of my all time favorite artists/comedians/entertainers period. He's such a gifted performer. His Kanye Rant is really good! So is his song "All Eyes On Me" from his Inside special. He won a Grammy in the case of the latter.
Yay! I really enjoyed that song. I expect it will be stuck in my head again for a while.
I love when he said "just nod or shake your head, we'll do the rest" you kinda did both😆
First time watching you, loving ya breakdown of the song
As someone born in the mid 80s growing up in the progression, encountering such a masterfully crafted summation of life online, his whole special was a very emotional experience. Watching the new generations have so much on demand is both inspiring and terrifying. The semi boredom of mass manufactured content is absolutely a double edged sword.
I still remember his old songs over 10 years ago.... he has always been a really talented person, and ha seem to get more and more talented as the time goes by
You have some pretty profound takes on this song. Definitely glad I checked out this reaction.
The irony we are watching a reaction video about a song thats about too much internet use amungst the people is super funny.
The "inside" this was promoting is a special, I'm sure they just categorized the songs from it into an album. Definitely recommend checking it out. He wrote it during quarantine, and it was his debut back into the comedy scene after a very long mental health break away from comedy and fame.
His whole special is worth watching, and has a wide range of feelings expressed. "That Funny Feeling" is my favorite but also the darkest song to me.
I think you might enjoy watching the entire "Inside" Bo Burnham special on Netflix since it has all of his songs (for the special, not ALL his stuff), but also a very real and very interesting part of the special that takes place in between each song. He did the entire thing alone (cameras, lighting, etc). It's an incredible piece of art and gets you thinking.
This may spoil some content for you since a lot of his most recent, notable songs are in it, but it's a good watch. Perhaps, watch each song from the special independently (on UA-cam) and then go back and watch the whole special on your own because it is impactful.
The boat ride in Charlie and the Chocolate Factory... He has that Gene Wilder/ demon-carnie quality that drives home his lyrics here.
Never heard of him before, so thank you for this. A great song, well sung and as for the content .. yeeeees, that's the internet for you, nowadays. The boon and bane of the internet is that everyone has access to it and the ability to 'upload' (be that text, speech, videos, etc., etc.) and there is absolutley NO filters (apart from your own) for quality, taste, or sanity.
I love how you started this one.
Inside is a Netflix special that he filmed over the course of the pandemic in a single room. I know this kind of cuts against the reaction format, but I highly recommend watching the whole thing. It really is crafted well as a complete work.
I don't know if I would regard Bo as a musician or comedian per say. He's more like a one man show really. There's a theatrical element to his work beyond just writing funny songs or telling jokes. He nearly always has a deeper message he's trying to convey and it feels like music and comedy are just two of the levers he uses.
I'm not used to reactors being intelligent LOL good shit
Reminds me of the Rocky horror picture show.
While perhaps not great for a reaction channel I definitely recommend watching his special "Inside" in its entirety (this is a part of it). While the individual songs are all amazing by themselves the experience of watching the entire thing is definitely greater than the sum of the parts
I've been a fan of Bo for years and his latest special Inside was to me a reflection of my own mental state wich was kinda scary... anyway i'am in therapy now...
He does a lot of commentary about the world, social issues, and mental health. If you come across a song of his from this special called "All Eyes On Me" I'd suggest watching one first called "Can't Handle This" first. They are about 5 years apart and when you watch them chronologically, the link between the two (don't want to spoil anything) really gives you some inside into him as a person. It would actually be cool to see a video with both of those songs back to back just to compare the two and see how you look at "Can't handle this" after watching both.
The special that "Welcome To The Internet" is from is pretty unique because he wrote, filmed, and recorded the entire thing in quarantine by himself. It has a lot of great tracks on it. He can be a little cynical but, even if I don't share his outlook on a subject, he always makes me think and laugh.
Like Burr and Carlin, Burnham is a can't miss. Please do more!!! I love seeing people introduce themselves to my favorites. I'd recommend maybe back tracking his older sets or maybe just audio.
I love that you caught the "just nod or shake your head and we'll do the rest". First reactor I've seen catch that. That sentence points out the inevitability of getting sucked in if you engage at all, IMO.
FYI, if you want to grow this channel with super engaged communities, watch more Bo, and watch Twenty One Pilots videos. The fandoms are large and verbose.
i love thought provoking comedians. It makes for the most interesting and in the end "entertaining" content to consume.
"Can't Handle This" (Kanye Rant)
"All Eyes On Me"
"White Woman's Instagram"
His super introspective special on Netflix is an emotional rollercoaster, deeply subdued and almost emotionally painful … true art
I personally suggest seeing Bo Burnham's evolution by starting at the beginning and watching his first hits like 3.14 Apple Pi, I'm Bo Yo, and (my personal favorite) New Math. He really evolved as an artist and I think you'd benefit experiencing his early days before diving into his later stuff.
Not a typical No Protocol video. He kind of reminded me of Robin Williams from Aladdin crossed with George Carlin and something else I can't quite think of.
This had a "Cabaret, " and a Peggy Lee "Is that all there is," vibe to it. He had an entertaining and interesting take on it.
Great reaction, subbed! Bo and Ren are the geniuses of our time.
More Bo Burnham! This was part of his special that he directed, produced and shot entirely alone in his bedroom during Covid lockdown and it's brilliant!!!
Bo is a one of a kind artist. Honestly watch all of his specials In order of release and see him mature. Like you said, it's a ride. Enjoy it. 😉
He’s the only artist that can make funny music that I actually enjoy listening to
Please do more Bo reactions, it's a great journey
Loved your reaction, you are very well spoken. You articulated your thoughts so clearly and criticized intelligently. Consider me subscribed, young woman! Maybe after one of his newest ones, you should do one of the earliest ones like "I'm Bo Yo". From a few years later "I especially like "Rant.", not to be confused with "The Kanye Rant", which is also great.
I’ve been listening to Bo since he was a teenager in his bedroom making videos. He was witty and sharp then and continues to be so. He’s gotten a bit darker recently, but that’s understandable.
“Oh wow the emotional manipulation in this song” yea not many people know this but it was co-written by my mom
This had me laughing
Probably a long take, but his special "What" is something to look forward. It's full on his UA-cam channel.
His more representative specials (I would say) are "Words, words, words", then "What", "Make happy" if I'm not wrong with the name, and lastly "Inside". He has other albums before that. It's still worth to watch his older songs.
He has had a long run, he even has a song named "Welcome to UA-cam" describing the UA-cam from, I don't know, 15 years ago?
I'm pretty sure this special (Inside) was made all by himself.
"Repeat stuff"
"Can't handle this"
"Left brain right brain"
The whole Inside album is a real deep dive and you can get a ton out of it every time you watch it. I do recommend doing it in order since the whole concept of it is a deconstruction of hes experience as a human being during a very difficult time in hes life.
Can't Handle This. We Think We Know You. Art is Dead.
There are so many incredible songs/segments/stories he's crafted that are so hilarious, and deep, and personal, and thought-provoking and so on and those just scratch the surface. Unbelievable artist.
"That Funny Feeling" is brilliant.
Welcome to the rabbit hole
Astute analysis as ever
Probably hit the finale to "make happy"
Then more from "inside"
If you're into the existential kick.
Yay! I LOVE watching people discover Bo for the first time.
You’ve gotta jump down the Bo Burnham rabbit hole…It’s a hell of a ride.
His art is really, really unique. Like if George Carlin and Weird Al had a kid who happened to also be super tall. Often times it’s simultaneously hilarious, and deeply unsettling. He’s a master at injecting existentialism, absurdism (both the art form and the philosophy) and really uncomfortable truths into goofy ear worms.
His catalog is an absolute goldmine…here’s some recommendations in no particular order:
How the World Works
From Gods Perspective
Pandering
Art is Dead
White Womans Instagram
Rant.
Straight White Male
Comedy
Left Brain, Right Brain
All Eyes on Me
Can’t Handle This (Kayne Rant)
We Think We Know You
And about 20 more lol. Liked and Subscribed for more Bo! Keep ‘em comin!!
Cheers
