Denji & Power sharing a single braincell is such a great duo! Mappa made some really artsy choices in the direction of this series that really make it a standout (I was totally hooked by episode 5!)
i haven't seen the series but the manga follows a very similar arc to what you're talking about: the early chapters feel almost like a generic shonen jump story (plucky underdog boy protagonist starts a journey to unlock his true potential blah blah blah) before becoming something way weirder and more intense. it never fully escapes the cliches (or sense of humor) but there are some wild images and ideas in there.
